Terra Nullius: The Effects Of Australia’S Colonial History On Sense Of Place, Anna Beyette Oct 2019

Terra Nullius: The Effects Of Australia’S Colonial History On Sense Of Place, Anna Beyette

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Australia’s history of colonization of Aboriginal communities continues to affect not only the indigenous population of Australia, but also non-Aboriginal Australians. This study focuses on how Australia’s complex history of colonization and its lasting effects influence the ability of Non-Aboriginal Australians to connect to place. One potential effect of colonization is “settler-guilt” or the complex feelings of guilt, remorse, and shame felt by “settlers” at their privilege derived from the racist, violent, and genocidal treatment of indigenous people and communities due to the colonization of indigenous lands and the legacy of colonization. This study asks whether settler-guilt exists in Australia, …

Special Issue Introduction: Labor In Academic Libraries, Emily Drabinski, Aliqae Geraci, Roxanne Shirazi

Publications and Research

Labor in academic libraries has reemerged as an area of critical interest in both academic library and archives communities. Librarians and archivists have long worked to counter the diminishment of their labor within an academy that centers the concerns of disciplinary faculty who may, in turn, see knowledge workers as a footnote to the scholarly enterprise. Recent years have seen a renewed attention to the social and economic conditions of our work, as researchers turned to topics such as affective labor in libraries and archives, attitudes toward labor unions, and information work under capitalism (Sloniowski 2016; Mills and McCullough 2018; …

The Housing Crisis And The Rise Of The Real Estate State, Samuel Stein Oct 2019

The Housing Crisis And The Rise Of The Real Estate State, Samuel Stein

Publications and Research

This article — an excerpt from my book, Capital City, with elaborations on a number of key points — argues that the housing crises endemic to contemporary capitalism must be understood as a result of the concentration of global capital into real estate and the the re-orientation of state planning capacities around the demands of the real estate industry. The first half of the article explains the dimensions of the crisis in the US and the rise of "the real estate state." The second half explores policy alternatives to contemporary urban neoliberalism and the kinds of movements necessary to …

Comparing The International Commercial Courts Of China With The Singapore International Commercial Court, Zhengxin Huo, Yip Man Oct 2019

Comparing The International Commercial Courts Of China With The Singapore International Commercial Court, Zhengxin Huo, Yip Man

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The article critically reviews the litigation framework of the Chinese International Commercial Court("CICC') using a comparative approach, taking as a benchmark the Singapore International Commercial Court ("SICC')--another Asian international commercial court situated within the Belt and Road Initiative ("BRI') geography. It argues that the CICC, despite being lauded as a visionary step toward an innovative, efficient and trustworthy dispute resolution system, does not live up to those grand claims on closer scrutiny. The discussion shows that the CICC is in many respects insular and conservative when compared with the SICC. The distinctions between the two litigation frameworks may be explained …

Creating Meaningful Engagement In Academic Libraries Using Principles Of Intergroup Dialogue, Ione T. Damasco Oct 2019

Creating Meaningful Engagement In Academic Libraries Using Principles Of Intergroup Dialogue, Ione T. Damasco

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

As a form of social justice education, intergroup dialogue (IGD) was originally developed in the 1980s at the University of Michigan as a critical-dialogical method and has since been implemented at many universities around the United States in curricular and co-curricular programs. IGD can function as a way of bringing students from different social identity groups together in sustained, facilitated learning experiences in order to advance social justice, equity, and peace. IGD combines the cognitive work of critically examining the intersections of social identity and power relations with the affective work of individual reflection and group interaction in specifically designated …

Managed Retreat And The Life Estate: A Practical Path Forward For Coastal Communities, Sam Gross Oct 2019

Managed Retreat And The Life Estate: A Practical Path Forward For Coastal Communities, Sam Gross

Virginia Coastal Policy Center

This paper focuses on a frequently discussed but rarely implemented solution to sea level rise: “managed retreat” away from at-risk and overdeveloped coastal areas. The paper begins by examining the threat posed by sea level rise through the lens of two contrasting municipalities: Miami, Florida and Nags Head, North Carolina. It then outlines the concept of managed retreat as well as the controversies surrounding this approach. Specifically, it examines the widespread voter hostility to condemnation efforts, the deterrent effect of inevitable legal challenges, and the financial burden of such efforts on cash-strapped municipalities.

After analyzing these hurdles, the paper assesses …

From Fürstenwalde To Kyoto: The Internationalization Of An Academic Library, Rachel Hooper, Christopher Shaffer Oct 2019

From Fürstenwalde To Kyoto: The Internationalization Of An Academic Library, Rachel Hooper, Christopher Shaffer

The Southeastern Librarian

In the fall of 2005, Troy University began what would be a robust internationalization effort, in which the University Libraries have ultimately played a significant role. Many of the faculty and the staff at the main campus library were born in Troy, AL and attended college there. Several of the librarians left the town of their birth only briefly to attend the state university for their MLIS, and then quickly returned to the comfort of the town and college they had always known. When Troy University began its process toward internationalization, some viewed it as much more than a paradigm …

Well-Behaved Librarians Rarely Make History: Juliette Hampton Morgan And Alabama Librarianship In The 1950s, Jessica Hayes Oct 2019

Well-Behaved Librarians Rarely Make History: Juliette Hampton Morgan And Alabama Librarianship In The 1950s, Jessica Hayes

The Southeastern Librarian

Juliette Hampton Morgan was the first white Alabama librarian to publicly support racial equality and desegregation initiatives, yet she remains largely unknown amongst library professionals, including those in her home state of Alabama. Outside of Montgomery, Alabama, where the central library in which she worked was renamed in her memory, little is known of her. This is evidenced by the scant information about her in the Alabama Library Association’s archives at the University of Alabama, the lack of recognition by the Alabama Library Association, and the slight understanding of Alabama librarians regarding her role in Alabama library history. (Knowledge gained …

Haa 372 World Cities: Cairo, Mother Of The World, Mark Delancey Oct 2019

Haa 372 World Cities: Cairo, Mother Of The World, Mark Delancey

Course Website Archive

This course will examine the urban development and architectural heritage of Greater Cairo, Egypt since the reconstruction of the fortress of Babylon in the Roman period, through the establishment of Cairo itself in 969, and until the present. Cairo has always been a crossroads of cultures, set between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It has been home to significant Jewish, Christian and Muslim populations who have been impacted by the various ruling dynasties who have held sway there, including the Byzantines, early Islamic rulers, Tulunids, Shi'i Fatimids, and later Sunni Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. In the 20th century, rapid …
