Gender Differences In Program Factors Important To Applicants When Evaluating Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Programs, Ellen Kroin, Dana Garbarski, Aoi Shimomura, Joseph Romano, Adam P. Schiff Md, Karen Wu
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
Despite specialty-driven efforts to improve diversity in the field, few women apply to orthopaedic residency, and women are unevenly distributed among programs. There is little evidence-based information on factors that may attract female applicants.
Objective
This study aims to identify factors important to applicants when evaluating orthopaedic residency programs and to identify gender-specific differences.
Methods
All applicants to a single orthopaedic surgery residency program in the 2017 Match were asked to fill out an anonymous survey. Respondents rated the importance of 35 factors when evaluating orthopaedic residency programs. The percentage of highly rated factors was calculated. Statistical analysis was …

Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works
The analyses reveal few differences in outcomes across racial/ ethnic groups in Cook County. When looking at case approval, dispositions, and charge reductions for all felony offenses combined, differences in the probability of specific outcomes by race/ethnicity are relatively small after accounting for other case factors such as offense severity or number of charges. For many decision points, differences in the probability of specific outcomes range from just 0 percentage points to 4 percentage points across racial/ethnic groups. When looking at specific offense types – person, weapons, property, drugs – differences in the probability of case approval, dispositions, and charge …

Chinese Household Saving And Dependent Children: Theory And Evidence, Steven Lugauer, Jinlan Ni, Zhichao Yin
Chinese Household Saving And Dependent Children: Theory And Evidence, Steven Lugauer, Jinlan Ni, Zhichao Yin
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper examines the impact of family size on household saving. We first study a theoretical life-cycle model that includes finite lifetimes and saving for retirement and in which parents care about the consumption by their dependent children. The model implies a negative relationship between the number of dependent children in the family and the household saving rate. Then, we test the model's implications using new survey data on household finances in China. We use the differential enforcement of the one-child policy across counties to address the possible endogeneity between household saving and fertility decisions in a two-stage least squares …

St. Paris, Ohio, Heartland Center For Leadership Development
Heartland Center for Leadership Development Materials
On the surface, St. Paris, Ohio, (population about 2,000) looks like hundreds of other small Midwestern farm towns—quiet and pleasant—a nice town to drive through on a Sunday afternoon. Like many communities, the town has enjoyed a “gentle growth” of about 4 % over the past ten years.
But underneath that traditional exterior, a persistent entrepreneurial spirit breeds new business with an aggressiveness that can be felt from the coffee shop to the farms that surround the town. Like many small towns in west-central Ohio, St. Paris enjoys a very diverse economic base that would be the envy of other …

Onaga, Kansas, Heartland Center For Leadership Development
Heartland Center for Leadership Development Materials
Leadership, entrepreneurship, wealth retention and youth development are all pieces of the recent successes of Onaga, Kansas, a very rural community of 704 people. Driving down Kansas Highway 16 and seeing the sign “Onaga, next five exits” would make you think it’s a large town. Indeed, it isn’t. But it’s the brainstorm of community developers who propose that adding such a series of signs would encourage more travelers to stop in.
“Onaga has a lot of assets that other communities would die for!” That is the sentiment of the part-time community development specialist for Onaga. This kind of sentiment is …

Looking out the window of a crowded office in Polson, Montana, one can picture a tipi village where the employee parking lot is now—a combination tourist attraction and outdoor sales show room for the traditional Plains-style tipis made by a local company that markets them throughout the nation. The company owner, and the person with the idea for selling the tipis, is a Native American who is a “serial” entrepreneur—someone who has started several businesses over time, then sells them off and starts another.
The Flathead Indian Reservation, which occupies more than one million acres from Montana’s scenic Flathead Lake …
Assessing Students’ Critical Thinking About Digital Information Via Statistical Analysis, Kim L. Ranger
Assessing Students’ Critical Thinking About Digital Information Via Statistical Analysis, Kim L. Ranger
Presentations
Think of statistical analysis as a way to advance student learning and improve teaching activities. This may be done with a single course if the analysis is conducted over multiple sections and/or semesters, and is also achievable by librarians teaching single sessions. We will delve into informed learning design to achieve critical thinking, digital literacy, and information literacy through the process of fact checking a website by searching (lateral reading), skimming (click restraint), and double-checking (verification). Do scaffolded activities really build on each other, i.e., are they statistically dependent or independent? Consult statisticians or statistics students to find out.
Children Of A Lesser God: Reconceptualizing Race In Immigration Law, Sarah L. Hamilton-Jiang
Children Of A Lesser God: Reconceptualizing Race In Immigration Law, Sarah L. Hamilton-Jiang
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
The increased public exposure to the experiences of Latinx unaccompanied children seeking entry at the United States southern border has revealed the lived reality of the nation’s pernicious immigration laws. The harrowing experiences of unaccompanied children are amplified by their interaction with a legal system plagued by a legacy of systemic racism and sustained racial caste. While immigration law currently affords minimal legal protections for these children, in application, the law continues to fall egregiously short of providing for the safety of unaccompanied children. Though critics have long attested to the legal system’s neglect of unaccompanied children, subsequent legal analysis …

Rural Futures Institute: Publications
Some recent national polls have shown a decline in confidence in higher education. The cited reasons for this decline are concerns about affordability, access and the political culture on campuses. Given these national trends, how do rural Nebraskans view the impacts of their education? Do they view higher education as important for individuals and the economy? Have these views changed over the past four years? What types of higher education institutions have their households attended? This paper provides a detailed analysis of these questions. This report details 1,776 responses to the 2019 Nebraska Rural Poll, the 24th annual effort to …

When I teach students about research, I tell them that they must go to the primary source. They cannot simply rely on someone else’s interpretation of it. If they do not understand the primary source, then they need to look for context. It is irresponsible for scholars and researchers to only rely on one source and to lift quotes and citations from that single source. Moreover, I tell students they must always, always, always, provide citations to support their assertions. Boles’s lack of citations and sources in his section discussing archival privilege is extremely troubling. He avoids nuance in order …
A Content Analysis Case Study Of Media And Public Trust In Japan: After The Quake, Rose G. Campbell
A Content Analysis Case Study Of Media And Public Trust In Japan: After The Quake, Rose G. Campbell
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 (Mw) earthquake off the Pacific coast of Honshu, Japan, caused a devastating tsunami, killing thousands of people. The 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake also created a partial meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, operated by TEPCO. TEPCO’s and Japan’s government response during this tragedy is the focus of this study. How institutions handle crises impacts public trust in institutions, which is a central theme. Using Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) as a framework, a content analysis of a U.S. national newspaper and a Japan-based English language newspaper was conducted covering a …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
In Fall term of 2014, three instructors of Portland State University’s School of Community Health, in collaboration with the school’s subject librarian, deployed digital badges to certify information literacy and critical thinking outcomes in their classes. The badge curriculum, which was developed by mapping library learning outcomes to course learning outcomes, was designed to teach and assess students’ understanding of and skills acquisition in website evaluation, information formats, database searching, citing and plagiarism, and contributing knowledge to the information landscape. Badges were issued using Credly, and before and after the term, students were asked to provide feedback about their learning …

The Experiences Of School Counselors As Anti-Bullying Specialists: A Phenomenological Study, Michael D. Hannon, Angela Sheely-Moore, Thomas A. Conklin, Andrew J. Reitter, Kathy A. Gainor
Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works
To learn about school counselors’ experiences in being assigned as their school’s antibullying specialist (ABS), per state legislation, we interviewed six school counselors and analyzed their responses using interpretative phenomenological design. The participants’ responses reflected three overarching themes describing their ABS experience: negotiating different bullying definitions, the “dumping ground” position, and inherent with role conflicts. We present implications for school counseling practice and recommendations for school counseling research.

Fast Track: Allowing Bikes To Participate In A Smart-Transportation System, Stephen Fickas, Marc Schlossberg
TREC Final Reports
This project focuses on a mode of transportation that is currently left out of V2X (vehicle-to-everything) conversations: bicycling. The project demonstrates how university researchers, city traffic engineers, and signal-controller manufacturers can come together to give bicyclists the same technology appearing on modern vehicles: Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA). GLOSA allows motorists to set their speed along corridors to maximize their chances of catching a “green wave” (i.e., not being forced to stop as they travel through the corridor). This project demonstrates how GLOSA can be used by bicyclists in the same way it is used by motorists on a …

Biking And Walking Quality Counts: Using “Bikeped Portal” Counts To Developdata Quality Checks, Nathan Mcneil, Kristin Tufte
TREC Final Reports
Cycling and walking are sustainable modes of transportation which improve community livability, but these modes have not been studied with the quantitative rigor applied to motor vehicle travel. This work aims to change that by improving bicycle and pedestrian traffic monitoring data quality, including how erroneous data can most accurately and efficiently be identified through automated processes. The research approach analyzes continuous bicycle and pedestrian count data stored in BikePed Portal, a data archive of bicycle and pedestrian count data. A primary goal of the project is to explore tests that could help to identify aberrant and/or erroneous data. A …
