Sharing And Managing Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher, Dessi Kirilova, Christiane Page Oct 2019

Sharing And Managing Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher, Dessi Kirilova, Christiane Page

Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs

The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR, www.qdr.org) is an archive dedicated to qualitative data and data underlying multi-method inquiry. QDR is the only repository of its kind in the US—dedicated specifically to curating and archiving qualitative data and attuned to the requirements and concerns of qualitative researchers, their materials and sources. Planning for QDR begun in 2007, as discussions about data sharing gained increasing salience in the social sciences. Much of the infrastructure and advice on sharing data, however, focused on quantitative data. QDR was thus founded to fill this gap and provide dedicated guidance and suitable infrastructure for the needs …

Whose Middle Ages?: Teachable Moments For An Ill-Used Past [Table Of Contents], Andrew Albin, Mary C. Erler, Thomas O'Donnell, Nicholas L. Paul, Nina Rowe

History

Whose Middle Ages? is an interdisciplinary collection of short, accessible essays intended for the nonspecialist reader and ideal for teaching at an undergraduate level. Each of twenty-two essays takes up an area where digging for meaning in the medieval past has brought something distorted back into the present: in our popular entertainment; in our news, our politics, and our propaganda; and in subtler ways that inform how we think about our histories, our countries, and ourselves. Each author looks to a history that has refused to remain past and uses the tools of the academy to read and re-read familiar …

J. M. Barrie: His Search For A Mother Figure, Elise Joyner Oct 2019

J. M. Barrie: His Search For A Mother Figure, Elise Joyner

Kean Quest

J.M. Barrie’s works collectively have a theme of children being overwhelmed by the struggles of the real world. His characters flee to fairytale lands to preserve their innocence for as long as possible. The most common example of this is in Peter Pan. Peter flies to “Neverland” where he can never grow up. Similarly, the title character of Mary Rose disappears on a fishing island and reappears without aging a day, thus also keeping her youth and innocence. By examining Barrie’s characters, one finds parallels between them and Barrie’s mother, Margaret Ogilvy. Her childhood was short since she rose to …

United States Senate Documents

Russia’s Internet Research Agency (IRA) launched an extended attack on the United States by using computational propaganda to misinform and polarize US voters. This report provides the first major analysis of this attack based on data provided by social media firms to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI).

This analysis answers several key questions about the activities of the known IRA accounts. In this analysis, we investigate how the IRA exploited the tools and platforms of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube to impact US users. We identify which aspects of the IRA’s campaign strategy got the most traction on …

Different Words, Same Song: Advice For Substantively Interpreting Duration Models, Benjamin T. Jones, Shawna K. Metzger

Faculty and Student Publications

Copyright © American Political Science Association 2019. The use of duration models in political science continues to grow, more than a decade after Box-Steffensmeier and Jones (2004). However, several common misconceptions about the models still persist. To improve scholars' use and interpretation of duration models, we point out that they are a type of regression model and therefore follow the same rules as other more commonly used regression models. In this article, we present four maxims as guidelines. We survey the various duration model interpretation strategies and group them into four categories, which is an important organizational exercise that does …

Sacred Heart University Scholar

This article examines existing data to consider the factors that go into the valuation of a sports franchise. Rather than assuming a narrow monetary calculation, I argue for a broader perspective that includes the often incalculable influence of coaches, fans, and players.
