Faculty Bibliography
We kicked. We screamed. We coped. We survived. We will tell you how. In early 2019, The Columbus State University Schwob Memorial (Main) library faced a MASSIVE weeding project like nothing they had coped with before. In this presentation, two librarians, Amy Parsons from Technical services and Emily Crews from Reference services, will share their workflows, public relations challenges, a few best practices, and changes that will be implemented. Oftentimes, libraries have to be torn apart to build them back better. This will be a lighthearted conversation on how we handled this challenge. We will also share a fall update …

Promoting Student Growth In Supervision And Remediation Using Motivational Interviewing, Melanie M. Iarussi, Keith Myers
Promoting Student Growth In Supervision And Remediation Using Motivational Interviewing, Melanie M. Iarussi, Keith Myers
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
It is common for students to experience resistance or ambivalence when a supervisor or faculty advisor requests they change their behaviors or perspectives to be a more effective counselor. Motivational interviewing (MI) is used to cultivate motivation for positive change within the context of a helping relationship, and is applied to counselor supervision. Implementing this approach can help improve the effectiveness of supervision and remediation, including students achieving desired outcomes, even if students are initially ambivalent or appear disengaged. In this roundtable, we will describe MI applied to clinical supervision and student remediation. Attendees will be encouraged to apply the …
Massive Resistance And The Origins Of The Virginia Technical College System, Richard A. Hodges Ed.D.
Massive Resistance And The Origins Of The Virginia Technical College System, Richard A. Hodges Ed.D.
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
The 1954 rulings in the United States Supreme Court cases of Brown v Board of Education was a landmark event in civil rights history. As momentous as the rulings were, they were not embraced by many Southern politicians. This was especially true in Virginia where Harry F. Byrd, Sr., U. S. Senator from Virginia, embarked on a campaign to massively resist court ordered school desegregation. Over the course of the next several years, Virginia's leaders would pass laws specifically designed to undermine the Brown rulings. These laws, known as massive resistance would, among other things, grant the governor the power …

“Tell Us What You Think:” Results Of An Exploratory Study Of Student Feedback On An Academic Library, Anne Grant, Jessica Serrao, Maggie Mason Smith
Presentations
Last September, the Dean of Libraries created the Campus Feedback Task Force to “develop a process by which Clemson Libraries [could] solicit online and in-person feedback from students, faculty and staff on campus.” In response, Task Force members prepared a marketing strategy and three methods of soliciting feedback: online via our 10 Days to Have Your Say blog and social media, and in-person through tabling across campus. This presentation discusses the details of how the Task Force met its charge, summarizes the 804 responses received, reflects on what worked and what we would do differently next time, and outlines the …

Exploring An Existing Weight Management App For Use With Adolescents And Young Adults With Spina Bifida: Usability Study, Elizabeth C. Stiles-Shields, Brittney Garcia, Kimberly Villota, Elicia Wartman, Adrien M. Winning, Grayson Holmbeck
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background: Adolescents and young adults with spina bifida (AYA-SBs) have unique user needs, given their variable and complex symptom profile. Owing to multiple barriers to prevention and intervention treatments for secondary conditions (eg, obesity), AYA-SBs may benefit from the use of behavioral intervention technologies (BITs). However, as BITs are often designed and tested with typically developing individuals, it is unclear if existing BITs may be usable for AYA-SBs.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the usability of a high-quality, publicly available, weight management–focused mobile BIT (smartphone app) for AYA-SBs.
Methods: Overall, 28 AYA-SBs attending a Young Men’s Christian Association–based summer …

Oil And Gas As A Driver Of The Regional Economy: Updates, Iryna Lendel
Oil And Gas As A Driver Of The Regional Economy: Updates, Iryna Lendel
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The economic trends in Northeast Ohio (NEO) over the last 20 years are typical of the Midwest region, with a positive increase in output outpaced by the state of Ohio, and the United States. The double recessions of 2001 and 2007-2009 show a deeper output decline in NEO than in comparable Midwest regions and the United States. Traditionally, industries with high regional specialization that have a competitive advantage and drive regional economies are called economic base industries. Groups of Regional Industry Drivers (GRIDs) are part of the economic base of a region. The Oil & Gas GRID accounts for less …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The landslide is one of the natural disasters that poses a serious threat in the Kersaratu Village, Sidamulih District, Pangandaran Regency, therefore a serious disaster relief is needed. However, the village has not received disaster mitigation training from related parties, so that most of the community does not understand how to deal with the landslide. For this reason, the village head and his staff and Youth Organization tried to search for information on disaster management using a smartphone, then the results of the search were disseminated to the community. This study aims to obtain an overview of the motivation, objectives, …

Does Time Spent Using Social Media Impact Mental Health?: An Eight Year Longitudinal Study, Sarah M. Coyne, Adam A. Rogers, Jessica D. Zurcher, Laura Stockdale, Mccall Booth
Faculty Publications
Many studies have found a link between time spent using social media and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. However, the existing research is plagued by cross-sectional research and lacks analytic techniques examining individual change over time. The current research involves an 8-year longitudinal study examining the association between time spent using social media and depression and anxiety at the intra-individual level. Participants included 500 adolescents who completed once-yearly questionnaires between the ages of 13 and 20. Results revealed that increased time spent on social media was not associated with increased mental health issues across development when examined …

Desertification is a global phenomenon caused by various processes, including climate change, vegetation processes, and human activities. The need to combat desertification is increasing in many countries. A reasonable assessment of the vulnerability or sensitivity of land cover to desertification at national scales is crucial to formulate appropriate strategies or policies for combating it. The main purpose of this work was to quantitatively assess the sensitivity of land cover to desertification in Mongolia using the MEDALUS approach. The MEDALUS method is a widely known technique for assessing desertification in the Mediterranean area. In this study, the method was adjusted to …

Pain Management In Dementia Patients In Nursing Homes, Tiffany Kneuss, Kelsey Weisenburger, Hannah Stewart, Kelly Reilly Kroustos
Pain Management In Dementia Patients In Nursing Homes, Tiffany Kneuss, Kelsey Weisenburger, Hannah Stewart, Kelly Reilly Kroustos
Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Pain in the elderly, especially those with dementia, is often undertreated and misdiagnosed by health care professionals in the long-term care setting. Communication barriers in patients with cognitive impairment force pain assessment to rely heavily on subjective interpretation of behavioral factors due to the inability of patients to self-report pain symptoms. It is important for clinicians to develop a standard method of identifying and assessing signs of pain in patients with dementia in order to appropriately treat those experiencing discomfort. Patients with dementia who present with a sudden onset of behavioral changes should receive a comprehensive evaluation that includes a …
