This thesis examines how Black residents in the Mississippi Delta claim and deploy agency and resiliency in a rural community context entrenched in a legacy of oppression. Black, low-income communities are implicitly labeled non-resilient when macro-level community capitals and resiliency literature are applied. However, I find that resiliency is culturally distinctive and oftentimes detected in ritual, daily processes in Black communities. This thesis rejects dominant narratives that Black communities in Mississippi are only poor, backwards, and lacking. It questions the assumption that dominant institutions have created inescapable boundaries for Black people in this region and challenges the notion that the …

Abstract

Background: Aphasia is a multi-modal impairment resulting from left-hemisphere stroke. Aphasia is often accompanied by post-stroke depression. Acquiring aphasia and depression is seen to hinder quality of life and rehabilitative outcomes. Traditional stroke therapy often does not monitor or treat psychological difficulties such as depression. Such psychological difficulties hinder progress in recovery and may need to be addressed in therapy to ensure the best possible outcomes.

As graduate students embark on research projects, they often are not fully aware of what paths they should take or the obstacles they may encounter. Effectively managing research data is a skillset that needs to be honed along the way. Trail guides, including librarians, can establish instructional signposts for relevant data management concepts. To be effective, guides need to be familiar with the knowledge and skill gaps of the explorers. Energy systems are complex, and this complexity requires diverse regulatory forms and strategies of management. Michigan’s energy system is situated within a multi-scalar governance structure reaching from national to local levels. As a result, the process of energy system decision-making can leave out smaller, remote communities and those without the economic, political, and knowledge capital necessary to engage in complex bureaucratic processes. This dissertation addresses the gendered implications of science and technology in the era of reforms. It argues that in this era, which began in 1978 and continues today, science and technology are highly romanticized as nearly omnipotent. The role of silence is explored with regard to how two lynchings in North Mississippi have, or have not, been memorialized. L.Q. Ivy was lynched in Union County in 1925. Despite several newspaper articles over the decades since the lynching has occurred his death is not acknowledged in the local history narrative, nor is it memorialized with a marker. Elwood Higginbottom was lynched in neighboring Lafayette County in 1935 and, despite a silence that has persisted for decades, has recently been memorialized. All mammals begin life in social groups, but for some species, social relationships persist and develop throughout the course of an individual’s life. Research in multiple rodent species provides evidence of relatively conserved circuitry underlying social behaviors and processes such as social recognition and memory, social reward, and social approach/avoidance. Species exhibiting different complex social behaviors and social systems (such as social monogamy or familiarity preferences) can be characterized in part by when and how they display specific social behaviors. Communication trainers can make a greater case for their work by positioning all of their training, at its highest level, within a civic frame. A civic frame raises the stakes for training components such as listening or diversity and puts the benefits of corporate social responsibility and similar efforts into practice in training contexts. This chapter details why and how trainers can use this frame to create transparency and elevate the value of their services.

We explore the relationship between ballot measures on issues salient to Millennials and their turnout in presidential and midterm elections. Both scholars and observers in the media have worried about decreasing levels of citizen participation, particularly among young voters. We demonstrate that one way to engage Millennials into traditional forms of political participation is through ballot measures that focus on issues salient to their generation (marijuana liberalization and higher education reform). We show that not only do these measures increase Millennial voting, but they erase difference in turnout levels between Millennials and older generations. This effect is primarily concentrated in …

ในปัจจุบันสังคมโลกเริ่มตื่นตัวในเรื่องของสิทธิความเท่าเทียมตามแนวทางด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนของสหประชาชาติกันมากขึ้นในหลายประเด็น สิทธิความเท่าเทียมกันในเรื่องของการแต่งงานเป็นหนึ่งประเด็นที่หลายประเทศที่เป็นประเทศเสรีนิยมให้ความสนใจ ซึ่งตั้งแต่ต้นศตวรรษที่ 21 เป็นต้นมาการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกันกลายเป็นปรากฎการณ์ทางสังคมใหม่ที่เป็นแนวโน้มระหว่างประเทศโดยเฉพาะในประเทศฝั่งตะวันตก ซึ่งการที่จะสามารถแต่งงานกันได้นั้นจะต้องได้มีกฎหมายที่เอื้อให้บุคคคลกลุ่มนี้สามารถแต่งงานได้ ประเทศแคนาดาเป็นประเทศที่เปิดเสรีและยอมรับความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมนั้นเป็นประเทศแรก ๆ ในเวทีระหว่างประเทศที่มีการอนุญาตให้บุคคลที่มีเพศเดียวกันสามารถแต่งงานกันได้ ซึ่งมีการแก้ไขพระราชบัญญัติการแต่งงานที่ให้คำจำกัดความของคำว่าการแต่งงานจากที่ระบุว่า “ผู้ชาย” และ “ผู้หญิง” กลายเป็น “บุคคลสองคน” แทน อย่างไรก็ดีกระบวนการในการแก้ไขข้อกฎหมายล้วนแล้วต้องผ่านการพิจารณาซึ่งต้องมีผู้ที่เห็นชอบและไม่เห็นชอบและทั้งในรัฐสภาและในภาคประชาสังคม ความท้าทายเหล่านี้นำไปสู่ข้อถกเถียงทางการเมืองในประเด็นดังกล่าว สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาถึงประเด็นการถกเถียงกันในเรื่องความเท่าเทียมกันของการแต่งงานโดยศึกษาในเรื่องของการตีความสิทธิมนุษยชนที่เป็นภาษาด้านศีลธรรมระหว่างประเทศผ่านมุมมองเรื่องสิทธิของกลุ่มที่สนับสนุนและต่อต้านกฎหมายการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกันของแคนาดา และเพื่อศึกษาถึงหลักหรือแนวคิดของการถกเถียงระหว่างผู้ที่เห็นด้วยและไม่เห็นด้วยกับการแต่งงานระหว่างผู้ที่มีเพศเดียวกัน โดยในการศึกษาได้นำกรอบแนวคิดทางสิทธิมนุษยชนที่สิทธิมนุษยชนถูกตีความได้ในหลายแง่มุมมองของแต่ละบุคคลหรือกลุ่มคน มาเป็นกรอบในการวิเคราะห์ถึงข้อถกเถียงของกลุ่มผู้สนับสนุนและกลุ่มผู้ที่ต่อต้านการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกัน สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงประวัติศาสตร์ที่มุ่งประเด็นเรื่องความเท่าเทียมกันทางเพศในเรื่องการแต่งงาน โดยเฉพาะการแต่งงานระหว่างคนเพศเดียวกันคือกลุ่ม LGBT โดยศึกษาจากมุมมองของตัวแทนของทั้งฝ่ายที่สนับสนุนและฝ่ายที่ต่อต้านการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกัน และนำมาวิเคราะห์และอธิบายเชิงพรรณนา การศึกษาค้นคว้าสารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ได้ศึกษาจากเอกสารในรูปแบบทุติยภูมิ ได้แก่ เอกสารที่เกี่ยวกับกฎหมายการแต่งงานของแคนาดา หนังสือ บทความทางวิชาการ เว็บไซต์ที่เกี่ยวกับแคนาดาที่มีรัฐบาลแคนาดาสนับสนุน เว็บไซต์ที่เกี่ยวกับสิทธิมนุษยชนและความเท่าเทียมทางเพศที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเด็นที่ศึกษา จากการศึกษาพบว่า ประการแรก การถกเถียงในเรื่องการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกันอยู่ในประเด็นเรื่องสิทธิและฐานความคิดของตัวแสดงทั้งในรัฐสภาและประชาสังคมนั้นกลุ่มผู้สนับสนุนและผู้ที่ต่อต้านการแต่งงานของคนเพศเดียวกันเป็นเรื่องของการมองและตีความสิทธิที่แต่กต่างกัน ผู้ที่สนับสนุนในรัฐสภาคือพรรคเสรีนิยม ส่วนภาคประชาสังคมได้แก่ ผู้ที่เรียกร้องสิทธิการแต่งงานคือคู่รักร่วมเพศ และโบสถ์ในชุมชนเมืองโตรอนโตโดยใช้ภาษาสิทธิมนุษยชนว่าเป็นเรื่องของสิทธิความเท่าเทียมกันระหว่างบุคคล ส่วนผู้ที่ต่อต้านในรัฐสภาคือพรรคเสรีนิยมและในภาคประชาสังคมคือสมาคมเพื่อการแต่งงานและครอบครัวเมืองออนแทรีโอ โดยใช้ภาษาทางสิทธิมนุษยชนว่าเป็นเรื่องของสิทธิครอบครัวที่ควรสงวนการแต่งงานให้เฉพาะผู้หญิงและผู้ชายเท่านั้นเพราะครอบครัวเป็นสถาบันพื้นฐานของสังคม รวมถึงสิทธิเด็กที่ควรจะได้รับการเลี้ยงดูจากบิดามารดาที่เป็นเพศชายและหญิงด้วย ประการที่สอง รัฐบาลพยายามผลักดันให้ผู้ที่มีเพศเดียวกันแต่งงานกันได้ เพราะรัฐบาลต้องการที่จะเข้ามามีบทบาทเพื่อจัดระเบียบพฤติกรรมของกลุ่ม LGBT ให้อยู่ภายใต้บรรทัดฐานการรักร่วมเพศ หรือ Homonormativity ซึ่งเป็นความพยายามที่จะให้กลุ่ม LGBT เป็นคนปกติที่จะสามารถแต่งงานกันโดยการรับการรับรองของกฎหมายที่ผู้ที่เป็นกลุ่ม LGBT ที่ต้องการที่จะแต่งงานจึงจำเป็นต้องทำตามเงื่อนไขและข้อกำหนดของรัฐบาล ประการสุดท้าย ตัวแสดงในรัฐสภาและภาคประชาสังคมถึงแม้ว่าจะมีแนวคิดส่วนใหญ่เป็นไปในแนวทางเดียวกัน แต่ในระดับปัจเจกบุคคลล้วนแล้วแต่มีมุมมองทางสิทธิมนุษยชนและใช้ภาษาทางสิทธิมนายชนตามมุมมองของตนเองได้ อีกทั้งยังแสดงให้เห็นว่าสิทธิมนุษยชนไม่ได้เป็นเพียงเครื่องมือของกลุ่มเสรีนิยมเพียงฝ่ายเดียวแต่กลายมาเป็นเครื่องมือเพื่อแสวงหาอำนาจทางการเมืองโดยฝ่ายอนุรักษ์นิยมในยุคปัจจุบันเช่นกัน

บทบาทของจีนต่อการแก้ไขปัญหาชนกลุ่มน้อยในเมียนมาภายใต้รัฐบาลสันนิบาตแห่งชาติเพื่อประชาธิปไตย, ธนกานต์ ปัญจลักษณ์

นับตั้งแต่พรรคสันนิบาตแห่งชาติเพื่อประชาธิปไตยเป็นผู้นำรัฐบาลเมียนมา ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเมียนมากับจีนได้พัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งบทบาทในกระบวนการเจรจาสันติภาพ ดังนั้นสารนิพนธ์ฉบันนี้จึงต้องการศึกษาบทบาทของจีนในกระบวนการเจรจาสันติภาพระหว่างรัฐบาลเมียนมาและชนกลุ่มน้อย เพื่อวิเคราะห์จุดมุ่งหมายและผลประโยชน์ของจีนในการเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมในกระบวนการสันติภาพของเมียนมา รวมทั้งเพื่อเข้าใจปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อยุทธศาสตร์การดำเนินความสัมพันธ์ของเมียนมาต่อจีนภายใต้รัฐบาลสันนิบาตแห่งชาติเพื่อประชาธิปไตย และผลพวงต่อกระบวนการสันติภาพ โดยใช้กรอบแนวคิดการพึ่งพาอาศัยซึ่งกันและกันในการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นดังกล่าว สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เสนอว่าความไม่มั่นคงบริเวณชายแดนจีน–เมียนมา อันเกิดจากความขัดแย้งระหว่างชนกลุ่มน้อยที่ยังไม่ลงนามในข้อตกลงหยุดยิงทั่วประเทศกับกองทัพเมียนมา และผลประโยชน์ด้านเศรษฐกิจข้ามพรมแดนและความมั่นคงของจีนบริเวณชายแดนจีน-เมียนมา เป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้จีนเข้ามามีบทบาทสนับสนุนกระบวนการสันติภาพทั้งทางการเมืองและการเงิน ขณะที่เมียนมามีข้อจำกัดเกี่ยวกับอิทธิพลเหนือชนกลุ่มน้อยฯ จีนกลับมีอิทธิพลต่อชนกลุ่มน้อยบริเวณชายแดนจีน-เมียนมาทั้งในด้านเศรษฐกิจและยุทธปัจจัย รัฐบาลเมียนมาจึงจำเป็นต้องพึ่งพาจีนในการกดดันชนกลุ่มน้อยให้ตกลงหยุดยิงและเข้าร่วมการเจรจาเพื่อสันติภาพอย่างเป็นทางการ ทั้งสองประเทศจึงคาดหวังว่าการร่วมมือกันในกรณีนี้จะนำไปสู่ผลประโยชน์ของทั้งสองฝ่าย

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการรับรู้เกี่ยวกับลักษณะวัฒนธรรมองค์การกับทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับความสุขและแนวทางการสร้างความสุขในการทำงาน : กรณีศึกษา พนักงานประจำสำนักงานโรงงานบริษัทผลิตบรรจุภัณฑ์แห่งหนึ่ง, จุฑามาส ตั้งจิตบำรุง

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะการให้ความหมายและการตีความของคำว่า “ความสุขในการทำงาน” และศึกษาแนวทางในการสร้างความสุข รวมถึงศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการรับรู้เกี่ยวกับลักษณะวัฒนธรรมองค์การกับทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับความสุขและแนวทางในการสร้างความสุขในการทำงานของพนักงานประจำสำนักงานบริษัทบรรจุภัณฑ์แห่งหนึ่ง โดยการศึกษาในครั้งนี้เป็นการศึกษาแบบผสมผสานทั้งเชิงปริมาณและคุณภาพ ซึ่งเชิงปริมาณได้ศึกษาจากประชากรกลุ่มตัวอย่าง จำนวน 117 คน โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากแบบสอบถาม นำมาวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยสถิติ ค่าความถี่ ค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบน และค่าสัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์ (Correlation Coefficient) ในส่วนการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ ผู้วิจัยได้ดำเนินการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview) แบบไม่มีโครงสร้าง โดยใช้วิธีการเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง (Purposive sampling) จากแผนกที่แตกต่างกันทั้งสิ้น 7 แผนก เพื่อนำมาใช้ประกอบการศึกษาวิจัยในครั้งนี้ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศหญิง มีอายุระหว่าง 31-40 ปี มีระดับการศึกษาปริญญาตรีหรือเทียบเท่า โดยมีรายได้อยู่ที่ 20,001-30,000 บาทต่อเดือน และมีอายุงานระหว่าง 0-5 ปีและส่วนใหญ่เห็นว่าสายงานค่อนข้างตรงกับการศึกษาของตน โดยฝ่ายที่ร่วมมือในการตอบแบบสอบถามมากที่สุดได้แก่ฝ่ายตรวจสอบคุณภาพ 2) พนักงานมีการรับรู้เกี่ยวกับลักษณะของวัฒนธรรมองค์การโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับมากที่สุด 3) พนักงานมีทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับความสุขในการทำงานโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับมากที่สุด 4) พนักงานมีพฤติกรรมตามแนวทางในการสร้างความสุขในการทำงานของ สสส.โดยรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก 5) การรับรู้เกี่ยวกับลักษณะของวัฒนธรรมองค์การมีความสัมพันธ์ทางบวกกับทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับความสุขในการทำงาน 6) การรับรู้เกี่ยวกับลักษณะของวัฒนธรรมองค์การมีความสัมพันธ์ทางบวกกับแนวทางการสร้างความสุขในการทำงาน

Studies examining how religion shapes individuals’ attitudes about science have focused heavily on a narrow range of topics, such as evolution. This study expands this literature by looking at how religion influences individuals’ attitudes towards the claim that neuroscience, or “brain wiring,” can explain differences in religiosity. Our analysis of nationally representative survey data shows, perhaps unsurprisingly, that religiosity is negatively associated with thinking that brain wiring can explain religion. Net of religiosity, though, individuals reporting religious experiences are actually more likely to agree that brain wiring can explain religiosity, as are individuals belonging to diverse religious traditions when compared …

Our knowledge of Medicare Advantage provider networks is particularly limited. This article is one of the first major assessments of the issue. It seeks to answer 3 important questions. First, are Medicare Advantage plan networks made up of higher quality providers? Second, how significant are the network restrictions imposed by Medicare Advantage plans with regard to access to higher quality providers? This study explores sexuality education teachers' identities and examines the ways in which teachers' experiences mediate their agency and resistance in classrooms. Using grounded theory methodology, the study explores the identities and experiences of school-based sexuality education teachers throughout the United States. Findings suggest that the teachers rely on a unique sense of identity in order to justify challenging the regulatory and policy limitations to their curricula. The study illustrates how agency is mediated by individual social location and experience.

We begin with a brief review of published studies that focus on “Campus RJ” and then examine six case studies from universities across the United States that illustrate how RJ benefits harmed parties and enhances student learning.

Sexual assault policy on college campuses in the United States is a complex system guided by federal policy, state policy, and local mandates. When students violate sexual misconduct policies, campuses primarily rely on suspensions and expulsions, paralleling the criminal justice system’s reliance on incarceration as a solution based on stigmatization and separation. Since the 1990s, restorative justice has made inroads as an alternative response to student misconduct, but application to sexual misconduct is rare. The Battle Off The Battlefield: Exploring Medical Cannabis Use Among U.S. Veterans Looking For Relief, Viridiana Edwards

This study analyzed the reasons U.S. veterans use cannabis, focusing on what ways cannabis is socially acceptable, what ways it is viewed as deviant, and to what extent veterans are using cannabis for pain and/or mental relief. To answer these questions, an open and closed ended questionnaire was created and was available online. My results showed that U.S. veterans were using medical cannabis due to the negative side effects from the pharmaceutical medication that they were prescribed, physicians not listening to them during their appointments, and for social integration.

Latinas represent a large proportion of the United States early care and education workforce, and thus have the potential to wield significant influence over the growth and development of millions of American children. However, the voices of Latina early childhood professionals often are missing in both research and mass media. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between early eye tracking and later non-suicidal self-injury, and whether this relationship was negatively impacted by distress and impulsivity, and conversely alleviated by emotional regulation and problem solving abilities. Briggs-Gowan et al. (2001) found that young children with recurrent and comorbid externalizing and internalizing problems have the most impairment; they exhibit greater difficulty with emotional stability, and require greater utilization of mental health services. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ (1) ศึกษาวิเคราะห์วัจนลีลาในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐาน (2) สังเคราะห์รูปแบบภาษาวรรณศิลป์ในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐาน (3) ศึกษาการรับรู้และการเข้าใจความหมายในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐานของครูผู้สอนนาฏศิลป์ไทยในระดับการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา (Content analysis) จากเพลงรำวงมาตรฐาน 10 เพลง คือ 1. เพลงงามแสงเดือน 2. เพลงชาวไทย 3. เพลงรำซิมารำ 4. เพลงคืนเดือนหงาย 5. เพลงดวงจันทร์วันเพ็ญ 6. เพลงดอกไม้ของชาติ 7. เพลงหญิงไทยใจงาม 8. เพลงดวงจันทร์ขวัญฟ้า 9. เพลงยอดชายใจหาญ และ10. เพลงบูชานักรบ และใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In Depth interview) ครูผู้สอนนาฏศิลป์ไทยในระดับการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานร่วมกับการวิเคราะห์เอกสาร (Documentary analysis) ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับรำวงมาตรฐาน วัจนลีลา วรรณศิลป์ และหลักภาษาศาสตร์ ผลการวิจัย 1. เพลงรำวงมาตรฐานทั้ง 10 เพลง เป็นระดับภาษาแบบกึ่งทางการ โดยลักษณะเด่นทางภาษา พบว่า มีการใช้การโยกย้ายส่วนของประโยคเพื่อเน้นความหมายในทุกเพลง รองลงมาคือ มีการใช้สรรพนามบุรุษที่1,2 และคำลงท้าย และการละคำ โดยมีการใช้คำถามน้อยที่สุด 2. ภาษาวรรณศิลป์ในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐานในด้านทำเนียบภาษา พบว่าปรากฏทำเนียบภาษาคือศัพท์นาฏศิลป์ และศัพท์สังคีต จำนวน 5 เพลง ได้แก่ เพลงงามแสงเดือน เพลงชาวไทย เพลงรำซิมารำ เพลงคืนเดือนหงาย และเพลงดอกไม้ของชาติ และพบว่า ศัพท์นาฏศิลป์พบในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐานมากกว่าศัพท์สังคีต ได้แก่ งามแสงเดือน รำมาซิมารำ และดอกไม้ของชาติ โดยศัพท์นาฏศิลป์ที่พบมาก ได้แก่ คำว่า “ฟ้อน รำ ฟ้อนรำ ระบำ ร่ายรำ และนาฏศิลป์”สำหรับศัพท์สังคีต คือเพลงชาวไทย และเพลงคืนเดือนหงาย ได้แก่ คำว่า “ เล่น โบก พริ้ว ประและพรม” 3. การรับรู้และการเข้าใจในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐานของครูผู้สอนนาฏศิลป์ไทยในระดับการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน พบว่าครูผู้สอนมีการรับรู้และเข้าใจในเพลงรำวงมาตรฐานเป็นไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน
