The goal of this study is to develop and evaluate proper validation methodology for the OLI L2 SR product. Validation was performed using near-simultaneous ground truth SR measurements during Landsat 8 overpasses at 13 sites located in the U.S., Brazil, Chile and France. The ground …

How Are Interannual Variations Of Land Surface Phenology In The Highland Pastures Of Kyrgyzstan Modulated By Terrain, Snow Cover Seasonality, And Climate Oscillations? An Investigation Using Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data, Monika Anna Tomaszewska Jan 2019

How Are Interannual Variations Of Land Surface Phenology In The Highland Pastures Of Kyrgyzstan Modulated By Terrain, Snow Cover Seasonality, And Climate Oscillations? An Investigation Using Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data, Monika Anna Tomaszewska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the semiarid, continental climates of montane Central Asia, with its constant moisture deficit and low relative humidity, agropastoralism constitutes the foundation of the rural economy. In Kyrgyzstan, an impoverished, landlocked republic in Central Asia, herders of the highlands practice vertical transhumance—the annual movement of livestock to higher elevation pastures to take advantage of seasonally available forage resources. Dependency on pasture resource availability during the short mountain growing season makes herds and herders susceptible to changing weather and climate patterns. This dissertation focuses on using remote sensing observations over the highland pastures in Kyrgyzstan to address five interrelated topics: (i) …

The Impacts Of Land Use And Land Cover Change On Water Quality In The Big Sioux River: 2007-2016, Dinesh Shrestha Jan 2019

The Impacts Of Land Use And Land Cover Change On Water Quality In The Big Sioux River: 2007-2016, Dinesh Shrestha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Between 2006 and 2012, conversion of 485,000 acres of grassland to cropland in eastern South Dakota was reported. In 2012, the Big Sioux River (BSR) running through most of eastern South Dakota was listed among the dirtiest rivers in the nation. This rating convinced state authorities to study trends of land cover changes in the BSR watershed and its association with BSR water quality with respect to increases in nitrate levels. This research i) quantifies spatial and temporal changes in the land cover types within the BSR watershed, and ii) identifies any correlation between these changes and changes in BSR …

The Relationship Between Campus Wellness Center Usage And Symptoms Of Depression In College Freshmen, Allison Leonard Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Campus Wellness Center Usage And Symptoms Of Depression In College Freshmen, Allison Leonard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is limited research done on the relationship between the program utilization at a campus wellness facility and the symptoms of depression in college freshmen. College students have been found to have a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than the general population, possibly due to the stressors college life can add. Studies have been done on the effects of physical activity as an intervention for depression as well as on the benefits of campus wellness facilities; however, there have been few studies that look at both campus recreation and depression. The author’s purpose for this study was to see if …

The Impact Of Alcohol Consumption On Academic Success And Athletic Identity In Collegiate Student-Athletes, Zoe E. Arnold Jan 2019

The Impact Of Alcohol Consumption On Academic Success And Athletic Identity In Collegiate Student-Athletes, Zoe E. Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Upon entering college in the United States, students are exposed to alcohol and, relatedly, the potentially dangerous experiences and effects that come with consuming alcohol. This is especially true for collegiate student-athletes, who have been found to have the highest consumption rate among student groups on campus. The purpose of the study was to understand the relationship between how student-athletes at a focus university, a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, experience alcohol consumption, how their consumption affects their academic grade point average (GPA), and how athletic identity plays a role in their experiences. While the research …

African American Student-Athletes: Factors Influencing Choice Of Graduate School, Tanner Feterl Jan 2019

African American Student-Athletes: Factors Influencing Choice Of Graduate School, Tanner Feterl

Each participant took part in an …

Our Stigmatized American Heroes: Examining How Veterans With Ptsd Communicatively Manage Stigma, Rikki A. Roscoe Jan 2019

Our Stigmatized American Heroes: Examining How Veterans With Ptsd Communicatively Manage Stigma, Rikki A. Roscoe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health conditions are arguably the most prominent disabling medical condition that military service members endure. Veterans with combat-related PTSD often refrain from seeking mental health treatment due to the stigma attached. Concealing PTSD or attempting to cope without professional help can lead to extreme and lifethreatening consequences including depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Attaining a better understanding of stigma management strategies is important because it has the ability to help veterans better manage stigma in the future. Thus, the current study uses stigma management communication theory (Meisenbach, 2010) to uncover the ways in which veterans with PTSD communicatively manage …

Make The Inaugural Great Again: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Donald J. Trump’S Inaugural Address, Danielle F. Dickerson Jan 2019

Make The Inaugural Great Again: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Donald J. Trump’S Inaugural Address, Danielle F. Dickerson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I utilized three distinct theories (ideographs, dramatism, and the bully pulpit) to rhetorically analyze and assess President Trump’s 2017 inaugural address. Ultimately, I analyzed whether Trump deviated from Campbell and Jamieson’s (1985) presidential inaugural expectations. While the presidential inaugural address was the only text analyzed, implications were drawn from Trump’s rhetoric leading up to and within the inaugural. This thesis also analyzed Trump’s rhetoric through social media, specifically Twitter, and looked at the context surrounding the inaugural. I suggest, through my research, that Trump does deviate from the traditional framework of the inaugural address, and ultimately modernized …

Land Cover Changes Within And Around Protected Areas In Côte D’Ivoire From 1986 To 2017: A Case Study Of The Mabi-Yaya-Songan-Tamin Reserved Forests, Olena Boiko Jan 2019

Land Cover Changes Within And Around Protected Areas In Côte D’Ivoire From 1986 To 2017: A Case Study Of The Mabi-Yaya-Songan-Tamin Reserved Forests, Olena Boiko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tropical forests mitigate climate change, provide habitat for the most biologically diverse terrestrial communities, and yield ecosystem services that support human wellbeing. These forests are some of the most threatened ecosystems because of the increasing human impact on the environment. Côte d’Ivoire has one of the highest deforestation rates in sub-Saharan Africa, and the expansion of agriculture to produce cash crops, such as cocoa and rubber, is presented as the primary reason for forest loss. These changes are apparent even within the boundaries of the protected areas, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of the protection strategies. This project illustrates …

Comparative Assessment Of The Flow State Scale And The Work-Related Flow Inventory: A Relative Weights Analysis, Samantha Gildemeister Jan 2019

Comparative Assessment Of The Flow State Scale And The Work-Related Flow Inventory: A Relative Weights Analysis, Samantha Gildemeister

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flow experiences, or optimal experiences of intense concentration and enjoyment, were originally measured using qualitative measures. More recently, quantitative measures such as the Flow State Scale (FSS) and the Work-Related Flow Inventory (WOLF) allowed for structural assessment of the construct, but the vague definition of flow led to variability in the foundation of the measurement. As such, this study aimed to investigate the extent of overlap between the FSS and the WOLF at the factor level in a sample of working adults. Specifically, we investigated the relation between the nine FSS factors and the three WOLF factors using confirmatory factor …

Instrumenty Prawne Wspólnej Polityki Rolnej Wpływające Na Konkurencyjność Polskiego Rolnictwa, Agata Niewiadomska

Monografie/Monographs

Zagadnienia konkurencyjności rolnictwa należą do szczególnie złożonych z uwagi na konieczność stałego równoważenia z jednej strony potrzeb ochrony i wsparcia rolnictwa, kształtowania parytetu dochodów uzyskiwanych przez producentów rolnych oraz wynagrodzenia za społecznie oczekiwanie świadczenie usług i dóbr publicznych (zwłaszcza prośrodowiskowych i prospołecznych), a z drugiej − zachowania fundamentalnych zasad i wolności gospodarczych, zwłaszcza wolnej konkurencji. Problemy stąd wynikające Autorka dostrzegła i podjęła całkiem udaną próbę ich przedstawienia, opracowania i oceny, co wymagało wiedzy znacznie wykraczającej poza stricte prawniczą.

Z recenzji dr hab. Beaty Jeżyńskiej, prof. UMCS

Rozprawa stanowi pozycję bardzo wartościową, jest rezultatem rzetelnej i dojrzałej analizy prawa europejskiego, rodzimego …

Stworzyć Lidera. Od Wizerunku Beniaminka Do Rozgrywającego W Biznesie, Julita Majczyk Jan 2019

Stworzyć Lidera. Od Wizerunku Beniaminka Do Rozgrywającego W Biznesie, Julita Majczyk

Monografie/Monographs

Providers' Perspectives On Women’S Integrated Healthcare: An Exploratory Study, Jenesse Kaitz Jan 2019

Providers' Perspectives On Women’S Integrated Healthcare: An Exploratory Study, Jenesse Kaitz

Psychology Department Dissertations

Women of color, low socioeconomic status (SES) women, and other minority groups face healthcare disparities in the U.S. healthcare system, including lower quality care (Cook et al., 2009), dissatisfaction, and barriers to accessing care (Anderson et al., 2001; Avery et al., 2011). In recent years, within the healthcare field, there is an increased interest in integrated healthcare, specifically, the integration of mental health services in primary care. The current study uses a mixed method exploratory approach to investigate providers’ perspectives on women’s healthcare disparities from a relational and systems perspective. We included both psychologists and primary care physicians from three …

Multilevel Resilience Characteristics Of Youth Who Are At Risk For Trauma, Kerrie Anne Pieloch Jan 2019

Multilevel Resilience Characteristics Of Youth Who Are At Risk For Trauma, Kerrie Anne Pieloch

Psychology Department Dissertations

Research on resilience, or “the capacity of a dynamic system to withstand or recover from significant challenges that threaten its stability, viability, or development” (Masten, 2011, p. 494) is a burgeoning field, particularly in the area of childhood resilience. Recent literature has moved away from the idea of resilience as a trait someone has or does not have and toward the integration of resilience at multiple levels beyond the individual child, such as their family and their community (Masten, 2014b; Masten, 2015; Southwick, Bonanno, Masten, Panter-Brick, & Yehuda, 2014). To address this call, this dissertation presents two original studies of …

Evaluating Psychosocial Mechanisms Underlying Stem Persistence In Undergraduates: Scalability And Longitudinal Analysis Of Three Cohorts From A Six-Day Pre–College Engagement Stem Academy Program, Sophie Kuchynka, Danielle Findley-Van Nostrand, Richard S. Pollenz Jan 2019

Evaluating Psychosocial Mechanisms Underlying Stem Persistence In Undergraduates: Scalability And Longitudinal Analysis Of Three Cohorts From A Six-Day Pre–College Engagement Stem Academy Program, Sophie Kuchynka, Danielle Findley-Van Nostrand, Richard S. Pollenz

Psychology Faculty Publications

In a previous report, we validated that a cohort of first-year undergraduates who participated in a weeklong pre–college engagement STEM Academy (SA) program were retained in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at a higher rate than a matched comparison group (MCG). In addition, SA students yielded increases in science identity and sense of belonging to STEM and to the university. Here, we report the ability to scale the size of the SA program to accommodate more students and replicate the previous findings with two additional cohorts. Longitudinal analysis of the 2015 and 2016 program cohorts demonstrate that both groups …

Three Essays In Industrial Organization, Yiyi Hu Jan 2019

Three Essays In Industrial Organization, Yiyi Hu

Economics Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation includes two papers about issues in two-sided markets and one paper discussing hierarchical Stackelberg model.

Chapter 1 analyzes endogenous horizontal product differentiation in a two-sided market with two platforms based on a two-stage Hotelling model. When the two sides are both single-homing, the platforms will choose maximal product differentiation in the equilibrium. However, when one side is multi-homing, and the multi-homing side views the platforms indifferent, the platforms choose minimal product differentiation in the equilibrium.

Chapter 2 investigates horizontal mergers in a two-sided market between three horizontally differentiated platforms. This chapter provides a theoretical analysis of impacts on …

Institutions, Trade, And Economic Prosperity: An Examination Of The U.S. And Mexican States, Dean Stansel, Meg Patrick Tuszynski

Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research

We provide the first subnational-level examination of the relationship between the presence of policies and institutions that are consistent with economic freedom and trade volume. To do so, we create a new comprehensive dataset detailing export activity between each U.S. state (that is, for the volume of trade between Texas and Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico, etc.) and between each U.S. state and each Mexican state (Texas and Chihuahua, Texas and Coahuila, etc.). Our empirical strategy allows us to explore what effect institutions have on both interstate trade and cross-border trade, and also what impact the national border has on …

Demonstration Policies At Private Universities: A Case Study And Analysis, Bastiaan Vanacker Jan 2019

Demonstration Policies At Private Universities: A Case Study And Analysis, Bastiaan Vanacker

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Unlike public universities, private universities are not bound by the First Amendment when regulating students’ on-campus speech. This has provided administrators at private universities with great leeway in putting restrictions on student demonstrations. This article starts out with a case analysis of Loyola University Chicago, where the demonstration policy was loosened after pressure from the university community. This example frames the research questions of this study, analyzing the prevalence and nature of demonstration policies at private universities. Compared to public universities, private universities are less likely to have a demonstration policy, and the language and procedures contained in these policies …

What’S In A Name? Department Name Revision And Its Relationship To Scholarly Productivity And Prestige Score In The Communication Discipline, Carolyn Lagoe, Archana Krishnan, David J. Atkin, Timothy D. Stephen

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The field of communication is one that must change and evolve with current trends to survive. Part of this transition involves updating institutional curricula and departmental identities to reflect current norms and practices in the field. To explore this phenomenon, the present study offers a snapshot of how communication units behave in transitioning to new names or altering their current ones. Study data are based on a dataset from the CIOS database containing a subset of communication programs that underwent departmental name revisions from 2009-2015. Trends indicate that departments are moving toward “communication studies” designations and away from those of …

“Let Me Walk With You”: Communicative Coaching And Communication Administration At The Crossroads, Craig T. Maier Jan 2019

“Let Me Walk With You”: Communicative Coaching And Communication Administration At The Crossroads, Craig T. Maier

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

Communication administration today is at a crossroads, contending with an unprecedented set of pressures and challenges. This essay explores how the emerging field of coaching might speak to this time. Drawing from the practices and standards of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the coaching literature, and communication ethics scholarship, this essay frames a uniquely communicative approach to coaching practice. After describing communicative coaching in terms of the goods that it protects and promotes (Arnett, Fritz, & Bell, 2009), it discusses how communicative coaching can sustain the goods of productivity, place, persons, and professionalism (Fritz, 2013) within the context of the …
