Comparison Of Scrupulosity Self-Report In Mexico Versus The United States, Johanna E. Hidalgo Jan 2019

Comparison Of Scrupulosity Self-Report In Mexico Versus The United States, Johanna E. Hidalgo

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The prevalence rate for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is between 0.8% to 2%. Many of these individuals experience scrupulosity or religious obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although scrupulosity is a salient theme for those who suffer from OCD, there is limited amount of research on scrupulosity across cultures. Research is particularly limited in relation to individuals from Latin American countries, including Mexico. In response to this limitation, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is a significant difference in symptoms of scrupulosity in non-referred samples of college students from the U.S. and Mexico. Results indicated that scrupulosity is a valid and …

#Metoo And The Politics Of Collective Healing: Emotional Connection As Contestation, Allison Page, Jacquelyn Arcy Jan 2019

#Metoo And The Politics Of Collective Healing: Emotional Connection As Contestation, Allison Page, Jacquelyn Arcy

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Participants in the #MeToo movement on Twitter expressed emotions like rage, pain, and solidarity in their personal accounts of sexual violence. This article explores the digital circulation of these affects and considers how the outpouring of tweets about sexual harassment and abuse contribute to a feminist politics centered on collective healing. The particular emotions expressed in the #MeToo Twitter archive subvert the logics of quantification and visibility that undergird popular feminism and the attention economy, and produce an affective excess that works toward movement founder Tarana Burke’s original project of “mass healing.” At a moment wherein popular feminism emphasizes individual …

“This Is What Learning Looks Like!” Backward Design And The Framework In First Year Writing, Jenny Mills, Claire Wiley, Judy Williams Jan 2019

“This Is What Learning Looks Like!” Backward Design And The Framework In First Year Writing, Jenny Mills, Claire Wiley, Judy Williams

Library Faculty Scholarship

The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education calls on librarians to teach complex concepts rather than discrete skills, but many librarians have struggled with implementing such teaching. This article reports on a revised lesson for information literacy instruction in First Year Writing classes, created using Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe’s backward design framework. Wiggins and McTighe’s model focuses on teaching “enduring understandings” and designing lessons and assessments that provide evidence of student learning. The authors employed a scaffolded approach to teaching the concept “searching as strategic exploration,” providing successive levels of temporary support to move the students toward greater …

A Cope Study (2019): Exploring Publication Ethics Issues In The Arts, Humanities, And Social Sciences, Committee On Publication Ethics Jan 2019

A Cope Study (2019): Exploring Publication Ethics Issues In The Arts, Humanities, And Social Sciences, Committee On Publication Ethics

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) is a non-statutory body which aims to provide practical publication ethics guidance for journal editors working in all research disciplines. COPE was first conceived by an editor of a specialist medical journal at the BMJ Publishing Group but has since grown to become a fully multidisciplinary organisation. As a result of perceptions within COPE that some members not in Science Technology and Medicine (STM) disciplines might not consider COPE to be as relevant, in early 2019 COPE, with the support of Routledge (part of the Taylor & Francis Group), commissioned primary research to better understand …

Microbial Synthesis And Characterization Of Silver Nanoparticles Using Alternaria Alternata, Sarafadeen O. Kareem, Oluwagbenga T. Familola, Adejare R. Oloyede, Enock O. Dare

Applied Environmental Research

In this study, extracellular biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out using Alternaria alternata. AgNPs were synthesized using vegetative and cell-free filtrate methods. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution was reduced with fungal mycelial mass and cell-free filtrate at a ratio of 1:4 (v/v). Further, the effects of biosynthesis parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature, light and dark incubation, and static and agitated conditions) were determined. The structural integrity of the synthesized AgNPs was investigated through UV-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Parameter optimization revealed that cell-free filtrate AgNP synthesis at 40 °C with constant agitation and …

Positive Education: Promoting Well-Being At School, D. Gomez-Baya, Jane Gillham

Psychology Faculty Works

What is positive education, and are there different conceptual boundaries? Why does it arise now? What is its origin? What is positive education about? What does it contribute that has not already been done and how does it differ from other existing orientations and practices? Where are the interventions implemented and why in these scenarios? What characteristics do they meet? When are these interventions carried out, i.e. what are the stages of the life cycle for which they are most oriented, and why in them? Who are the people in charge of positive education, how are they organized, or what …

A Role For Regional Science In Analyzing Water Issues, Christa D. Court, Elham Erfanian Jan 2019

A Role For Regional Science In Analyzing Water Issues, Christa D. Court, Elham Erfanian

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The World Economic Forum has consistently ranked water crises as one of the top five most impactful issues facing humanity, alongside but not completely separate from issues such as climate change and natural disasters (World Economic Forum, 2019). A growing population and changing climate will only further stress the constrained water system. Acute and ongoing societal disruptions, caused by significant declines in the available quality and quantity of fresh water around the globe, underscore the importance of water to human life and a functional society. The papers in this special issue highlight the role that regional scientists can and should …

Political Knowledge And Political Engagement In The United States, Brittany Shaul Jan 2019

Political Knowledge And Political Engagement In The United States, Brittany Shaul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the impact of political knowledge on forms of political engagement in the United States. Prior literature has established a relationship between political knowledge and political engagement, where those with higher political knowledge were more likely to engage politically through acts such as voting. This study distinguished between the various forms of political engagement and political knowledge, and seeks to provide relevant data on who is more likely to have political knowledge, and what impact having political knowledge has. This served to reexamine trends found in past literature, in order to see if these trends have persisted or …

The Influence Of Household Chaos And The Home Language Environment On Preschool-Age Children’S School Readiness, Laura Mary Northerner Jan 2019

The Influence Of Household Chaos And The Home Language Environment On Preschool-Age Children’S School Readiness, Laura Mary Northerner

Wayne State University Dissertations

School readiness, including both cognitive and social-emotional development, is an important indicator of a child’s preparedness for school entry, and a meaningful predictor of future academic success (Duncan et al., 2007). The home environment plays a critical role in the development of children’s school readiness, especially for children facing social inequalities. Within the home environment, household chaos and home language have been found to impact school readiness. The current study expanded on previous research on household chaos by collecting multiple measures of household chaos, including a naturalistic observation across several days. The current study also naturalistically investigated the home language …

Contingent Appointments In Academic Libraries: Management Challenges And Opportunities, Marta Bladek Jan 2019

Contingent Appointments In Academic Libraries: Management Challenges And Opportunities, Marta Bladek

Publications and Research

Academia’s overwhelming reliance on non-tenure track, or contingent, faculty is a well known fact. While the status and working conditions of contingent classroom faculty have been well studied and documented, the corresponding trend in academic libraries has not been explored as deeply. As this paper reviews the limited LIS literature on the subject, it aims to provide administrators and managers with a deeper understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of contingent appointments. It also offers strategies for fostering a workplace culture that recognizes contingent librarians’ contributions and promotes their professional growth.

Women In Sport: The Influence Of Societal Expectations On Female Fighters, Madison Crimi-Demichele Jan 2019

Women In Sport: The Influence Of Societal Expectations On Female Fighters, Madison Crimi-Demichele

Whittier Scholars Program

Women have made great strives to receive the same opportunities as men and rise above subordinate positions - in sport, the workplace, and society as a whole. Women's participation in sport has been examined frequently in most areas of individual and team sports, yet little research has been conducted on professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters. Existing evidence and social theories indicate that as a greater number of female fighters participate in the sport of MMA without giving into stereotypical gender roles there will be a decrease in the effects of societal expectations such as: male gaze, subordinate roles of women, …

Vwa: Hearing The Courageous Voices Of Extraordinary Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence In Haiti, An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Michaelle Darley Pierre

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a huge epidemic in Haiti. It is estimated that 273,200 women suffer from instances of IPV yearly in Haiti. This is in line with the finding that 9.4% of the population of 14-49 year old Haitian women are affected by IPV (Gage, Honoré, & Deleon, 2016; Hindin, Kishor, & Ansara, 2008). It is critical to incorporate the voices of courageous women who have lived through partner violence into our understanding of this phenomenon. This qualitative study aimed to hear the VWA (Voice in Creole) of women in Haiti based on their lived experiences of IPV …

Clinical Director Perspectives On Decision Making Of Family Involvement With Clients At Inpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Centers, Lauren Amber Serdencuk

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Literature supports that family members of individuals who abuse substances are significantly influential, whether it be positive or negative (Liddle et al., 2001). Evidence-based family therapy decreases substance use by adolescents (Slesnick et al., 2006). The purpose of this study was to gain the perspectives of clinical directors regarding decision making of family involvement at inpatient substance abuse treatment centers. Clinical directors were the focus of this study due to their experience, credentials, and their ability to oversee all clients and programs in a substance abuse treatment center. Purposeful sampling was utilized to obtain participants. Saturation was reached at three …

Marriage And Family Therapists’ Clinical Impressions Of Romantic Relationship Dissolution Heartbreak: A Modified Delphi Study, Isibel C. Moreno Jan 2019

Marriage And Family Therapists’ Clinical Impressions Of Romantic Relationship Dissolution Heartbreak: A Modified Delphi Study, Isibel C. Moreno

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2018) defines heartbreak as “crushing grief, anguish or distress.” Heartbreak can lead to biological, psychological and social responses and consequences. Heartbreak from the dissolution of a romantic relationship is a form of disenfranchised grief, which is defined as the griever’s belief that society does not recognize their source of grief as legitimate (Doka, 1989). The literature shows that talking about grief helps those who experience it (Fisher & Archer, 2008). Hence, the present study sought to provide a consensus of the best practices that marriage and family therapists have utilized to help broken-hearted clients. I employed a …

Through these courses, student therapists are able to learn theory and application of an innovative experiential model for clients, but also utilize the activities to get to know themselves better as emerging therapists.

The purpose of this study was to explore if and how the …

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Women Veterans Transitioning Back Into Civilian Life, Paula Boros Jan 2019

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Women Veterans Transitioning Back Into Civilian Life, Paula Boros

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Officially, women have been serving in the United States military since 1948 when President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Women currently make up approximately 8% of active duty military. Based on progress due to equality and equity, women are now occupying positions previously designated for men. Although women have made great strides in the military, there is limited research on women in the military or how their military service affects them. There is even less literature on women who have transitioned out of the military. For this reason, I conducted an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) with a …

Solution-Focused Family Weekends In An Addictions Treatment Facility: An Action Treatment-And-Research Study, Sandra Dimarco Jan 2019

Solution-Focused Family Weekends In An Addictions Treatment Facility: An Action Treatment-And-Research Study, Sandra Dimarco

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

For the past 69 years, since the start of the addiction treatment system in the United States, treatment providers have been utilizing the same interventions in rehab centers, the majority of which are based on outdated ideas about substance misusers. Though the premise of such interventions has been questioned by researchers, treatment providers continue to utilize them. Family therapy, in particular, shows promising results for substance misusers and their families; it has been cited as the most powerful form of intervention in addiction treatment. Nevertheless, family therapy is underrepresented in the addiction literature and rehab centers. Furthermore, postmodern models of …

Radio Research As Critical Archival Studies: Cross-Sector Collaboration And The Sound Record, Amanda R. Keeler, Josh Shepperd

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Radio studies occupies an unusual position within film and media studies. As Journal of Radio & Audio Media Editor, Anne MacLennan (2016) has noted, the area is often recognized as a euphemism for media history. It’s a small sub-discipline that has already been legitimated, yet at the same time has difficulty maintaining visibility within broader media studies discourses. Fewer graduate programs are supporting radio or media history research, with notable exceptions, leading to fewer media historians rising to replace a previous generation that has recently retired. But the work continues and has undergone several recent changes. Radio studies often receives …
