Assessing The Impact Of Factors On Parental Grief Among Older Chinese Parents, Yongqiang Zheng, Leslie Wuest
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
A sample of 206 older Chinese bereaved parents was recruited and the effects of attachment style, coping strategy, social support, and spirituality on parental grief were investigated utilizing structural equation modeling. The results revealed problem-focused and dysfunctional coping strategy, insecure attachment style, less social support from family and friends would likely lead to higher levels of parental grief. The study explored how the unique context of Chinese culture and policies may shape the severity and duration of parental grief. It provides a baseline to understand the complexity of parental grief in China and to design and improve future interventions
The Eyes Never Lie: Detecting Simulated Traumatic Brain Injury With Eye-Tracking, Robert John Kanser
The Eyes Never Lie: Detecting Simulated Traumatic Brain Injury With Eye-Tracking, Robert John Kanser
Wayne State University Dissertations
Performance validity test (PVT) inaccuracies can be explained by both test and extra-test (e.g., research design components) factors. Eye-tracking is a promising technology to enhance assessment of performance validity. Prior research has established that ocular behaviors are reliable biomarkers of (un)conscious cognitive processes. Experimental research on deception has shown that ocular behaviors reliably distinguish feigned concealment of information from honest responding. The primary objective of this study was to examine the incremental utility of incorporating eye-tracking into a clinical PVT to distinguish adults with verified TBI from adults coached to feign cognitive impairment. A secondary objective was to determine the …

Digital connectivity and social media use have become increasingly commonplace as internet-mediated communication and mobile phone technology dominate our daily communication repertoire. Informed by a multidisciplinary theoretical framework of the cybernetic Big Five theory (CB5T; DeYoung, 2015), Communication Theory of Identity (Hecht, 1993), an affordances framework (DeVito, Birnholtz, & Hancock, 2017), and respectability politics (Higginbotham, 1993), this two-phase sequential explanatory mixed methods (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011) dissertation explores some of the implications of social media use for North America’s (the United States and Canada) Muslims, and how Muslim social media users engage with and communicate through internet-mediated technologies to …

The Quest For Wholeness, Shann Ray Ferch
The Quest For Wholeness, Shann Ray Ferch
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The articles in this volume of the IJSL, like the articles we’ve been honored to publish throughout the journal’s history, are bold, transgressive, and aimed at decentralizing dominant-culture narratives. As people, Shann Ray Ferch, IJSL editor-in-chief, believes that we are specific and universal, beautiful, tragic, met with fracture, met with fusion, triumphant, graceful, traumatized, deeply harmed, lovely, and graceful. The collective presence of the articles published in this volume are guided by similar beliefs, addressing the call given by Seattle writer and National Book Award winner Charles Johnson (Middle Passage) who asks, “How do we portray the racial, cultural, gender, …
The Qualitative Essence Of Servant-Leadership1, Jiying Song, Shann Ray Ferch
The Qualitative Essence Of Servant-Leadership1, Jiying Song, Shann Ray Ferch
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Robert K. Greenleaf (2002) effectively embodied lesser known servant-leadership aspects such as prophesy, foresight, and the will to better society, often through personal and collective sacrifice. In his telling essay on Robert Frost’s poem “Directive,” Greenleaf showed not only his strengths in linear thinking, but his uncommon and profound gifts with regard to nonlinear, mystery-based, and more circular aspects of wisdom. This type of wisdom is more readily associated with poets and painters than business practitioners or social scientists.

I acted and behold, service was joy.” The 2018 Malayalam language film Njan Prakashan (lit. “I am Prakashan”), with English subtitles, brings to life Tagore’s words in a story bursting with the universal themes of humor, joy, empathy, tragedy and, ultimately, rebirth.
Radiocarbon Evidence For Initial Early Formative Period Occupation In Coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, Guy David Hepp
Radiocarbon Evidence For Initial Early Formative Period Occupation In Coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, Guy David Hepp
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Seven AMS radiocarbon dates (1950–1525 cal BC) from controlled contexts demonstrate Early Formative period occupation in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico. These dated elements from the site of La Consentida include hearths, occupational surfaces, carbon adhering to pottery from a midden, and human bone collagen processed with XAD purification. They were excavated from primary contexts and do not represent redeposited materials. An eighth sample, dated to the Middle Formative period, is considered postoccupational. The diversity of dated deposits and features, their distribution, and their overlapping calibrated ranges indicate settlement by an initial Early Formative period village.
Deaf Children, Humor And Education Policy, Donna Jo Napoli, R. L. Sutton-Spence
Deaf Children, Humor And Education Policy, Donna Jo Napoli, R. L. Sutton-Spence
Linguistics Faculty Works
Deaf children need true inclusion to learn, entailing consistent, pervasive use of visual-learning techniques. This is achieved via bilingual education policies that enforce deaf children’s rights to use sign language, permitting teachers to engage in deaf pedagogy using sign language. Educational policies advocating inclusion via an interpreter in the mainstreamed classroom create the “illusion of inclusion” (Glickman 2003). We argue that, in either case, humor can aid inclusion. Understanding humor is a developmental ability, related to cognitive, social, linguistic, and metalinguistic competence. Additionally, learning how humor is understood and expressed contributes to language mastery. However, we find little discussion of …

Keeping College Pricey: The Bootlegger And Baptist Story Of Higher Education Accreditation, Mary Watson Smith, Joshua C. Hall
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Since the passage of the Veterans Readjustment Act of 1952, private accrediting agencies have held the purse strings to all federal student aid. Today, six regional accrediting agencies and ten national accrediting agencies act as the gatekeepers of these federal monies. No college or university can access federal funds without receiving the imprimatur of one of these recognized accrediting agencies. Proponents of the current system of accreditation argue that the framework presently in place ultimately benefits both students and the public at large by fulfilling quality assurance and information signaling functions. Applying Yandle’s “Baptists and Bootleggers” model, we examine whether …
