Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric Jan 2019

Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

This paper is the result of an inquiry into ecological consciousness through a participatory paradigm. The dialectical relationship between institutionalized education and consciousness is central to this inquiry’s focus. This exploration into ecological consciousness has lead to the following question: How can institutionalized education be designed, delivered, and experienced in a way that nurtures ecological intelligence, ecological consciousness, and more importantly, ecological activism? The ‘sense of self ‘is a central theme within the paper, and led to the conception of intraearthal and interearthal relationships as a way of communicating our need to identify as being in Earth. The author utilizes …

Navigating The First Year: Transition And Adjustment Experiences Of International Students Of Color At A Predominantly White Institution, Christina W. Yao, Jennifer N. Rutt, Kaleb Briscoe, Alexandra Kirshenbaum, Matthew W. Knight, Kathleen J. Buell

UNL Office of Research and Innovation, Social/Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium

International student mobility has been a highly discussed topic in higher education in the United States (U.S.). Yet current geopolitical issues necessitate a reexamination of how international students, especially those who would be considered students of Color, are transitioning to U.S. higher education institutions. Findings from three interviews that spanned participants’ first year on campus include the importance of social interactions, challenges with academic adjustments, and navigating the effects of politics. Suggestions for student affairs practice are addressed, including pre-sojourn connections and peer engagement.

Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins Jan 2019

Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

According to the World Health Organization, 235 million people around the world currently suffer from asthma, which includes approximately 25 million in the United States. There is substantial epidemiological evidence indicating linkages between outdoor air pollution and asthma symptoms, more specifically between concentrations of particulate matter and asthma. Using county level data for 2001-2014, a spatial panel framework is imposed based upon prevailing wind patterns to investigate the direct and indirect impacts of PM2.5 concentration levels on asthma hospitalization in Pennsylvania. This model controls for population density, precipitation, smoking rate, and population demographic variables. Results show that PM2.5 concentrations as …

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson Jan 2019

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

In the sociology classroom, students expressed thoughts of denial of the importance of a number of social issues, including climate change. During this time, I was involved in two initiatives which were collaborative efforts to weave Ignatian Pedagogy with sustainability education. First, at Canisius College, we developed a Sustainability Initiative to embrace a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability in academics, community and campus culture. Second, I was invited to become involved with the AJCU Ecology Educators group working on the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability. Through the application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability tool kit, I took the opportunity to …

The Interior Dictates The Exterior: In Individuals And Organizations, Kevin Parker Jan 2019

The Interior Dictates The Exterior: In Individuals And Organizations, Kevin Parker

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The inconvenient truth about servant-leadership is that it begins with us and then compels one to build meaningful relationships with organizational members. Leading well doesn’t just determine what a leader does, but how they do so (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2013). When practicing servant-leadership, one is required to access the interior of a person and meet and serve them there. No loitering around the exterior of their lives, their emotions, their fears, or their challenges; rather, it is an inside job, which takes effort, intentionality and consistency.

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

[From the introductory material]

This is Old Dominion University’s 20th annual State of the Region Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, John R. Broderick, the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.

While the enthusiasm we have for our work remains high, it has been dampened by the recent passing of George Dragas, the individual most responsible for perceiving …

Part 3: Mind The Gap: Women's Leadership In Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

We examine whether there is a leadership gap between women and men in Hampton Roads. While a gap in earnings can be explained partly by occupational choice, part-time versus full-time employment and the risks of certain occupations, there remains the challenge of women being able to ascend to the higher levels of their chosen profession. We explore the extent of the leadership gap in our region and discuss what can be done to narrow it.

Part 5: Can Defense Save Us?, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Sequestration is blamed for many of our region's problems. In this chapter, we assess what would have happened to the Hampton Roads economy if sequestration had never occurred. We compare the impact of sequestration with the drawdown from the Cold War. We ask whether it is time to prepare for the next downturn in defense spending.

Part 6: The Economic Impact Of A Hurricane On Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

In 1821, a Category 3 hurricane made landfall in Hampton Roads, flooding Norfolk before moving on to New York City. What would be the impact of a similar hurricane today on the region's economy? We find that a major hurricane would cause almost $20 billion in property damage, create more than 2 million tons of debris and reduce economic output by over $20 billion in the first year following landfall.

"Fuck Tha Police": The Poetry And Politics Of N.W.A., Sandra Young

English Faculty Publications

No one withdrew after syllabus day. In the semester I piloted a first-year seminar course, the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs,” on the first day of class, I introduced the topic of the class and myself. However, before I gave students the syllabi, I confessed that I knew little about music. I told them I Googled and YouTubed, and read our text to gain knowledge about protest songs. I told them the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs” was a writing class, and rhetoric means persuasion. “In this class, you’ll write academic essays about protest songs. And we’ll listen to some music.”

An Inference-Driven Branch And Bound Optimization Strategy For Planning Ambulance Services, Kevin Mcdaniel Jan 2019

An Inference-Driven Branch And Bound Optimization Strategy For Planning Ambulance Services, Kevin Mcdaniel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Strategic placement of ambulances is important to the efficient functioning of emergency services. As part of an ongoing collaboration with Wayne County 911, we developed a strategy to optimize the placement of ambulances throughout Wayne County based on de-identified call and response data from 2016 and 2017. The primary goals of the optimization were minimizing annual operating cost and mean response time, as well as providing a constructive solution that could naturally evolve from the existing plan. This thesis details the derivation and implementation of one of the optimization strategies used in this project. It is based on parametric statistical …

Glass And Lapidary Beads At Jamestown, Virginia: An Updated Assessment, Emma Derry Jan 2019

Glass And Lapidary Beads At Jamestown, Virginia: An Updated Assessment, Emma Derry

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

An updated assessment of the trade beads in the Jamestown collection has long been overdue since Heather Lapham’s 1998 study. The size and variation of the collection has expanded to include nearly 4,000 glass beads representing over 100 Kidd and Kidd varieties, as well as nearly 100 lapidary beads made of amber, coral, jet, amethyst, carnelian, chalcedony, agate, and quartz. The Jamestown assemblage strongly resembles those found at 16th-century Spanish colonial sites, due to the presence of navy blue Nueva Cadiz beads manufactured in Venice and faceted quartz-crystal beads likely produced in Spain. Other beads in the collection, however, may …

Roman To Islamic Beads And Pendants From Matmar And Mostagedda, Middle Egypt, Joanna Then-Obłuska, Alexandra D. Pleşa

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Between 1927 and 1931, British archaeologists Guy Brunton and his wife Winifred recorded over 150 graves assumed to date from Late Dynastic to early Islamic times in the cemeteries of Matmar and Mostagedda, Middle Egypt. Sixty-four bead objects found in funerary context are now located in six museum collections. Recent studies of material found in these tombs and the radiocarbon dating of textile samples allowed for a revision of Brunton’s initial chronology and an overview of the typology of the bead corpus based on the revised chronological framework. The analysis of the Matmar and Mostagedda corpus also opens the avenue …

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl Jan 2019

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Although many beaded aprons from the coastal area of the Guianas are among the oldest preserved collected objects of the South American lowlands, there is still no general consensus as to who the manufacturers of these aprons were. The glass beads used differ from those typically employed at the end of the 19th century and can be dated between 1750 and 1850. In the literature and museums, these aprons are not frequently described in detail, and the author is not aware of any early object for which a collector has provided more detailed information. This article is intended to give …

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin Jan 2019

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We estimate the trade-off between agricultural production and forest preservation for the municipalities in Brazil’s agricultural frontier, the so-called “arc of deforestation,” using census and deforestation data for 2006. We use a nonparametric directional output distance function that allows us to identify the gradients of the production possibility frontier, which are the trade-offs of interest. We found that, on average, $979 is forgone in annual livestock, timber, and grain revenues to conserve 1 hectare of forest. This translates, ceteris paribus, to an average present value of costs to permanently sequester CO2 of $16.36/t, higher than most previous estimates.

The Opportunity Cost Of Preserving The Brazilian Amazon Forest, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Richard Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Jan 2019

The Opportunity Cost Of Preserving The Brazilian Amazon Forest, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Richard Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We estimate the trade-off between forest preservation and agricultural production for the Legal Amazon region, using census and deforestation

data for municipalities in 2006.We use a directional distance function to represent the production possibility frontier, and then calculate the shadow

price of reducing deforestation in terms of agricultural income foregone. Results indicate that, on average, to preserve 1 ha of forest, $797 in annual

agricultural GDP must be foregone. Using a discount rate of 10% and average forest carbon density of 132 tons per hectare, these results imply an

average shadow price of $16 per ton of CO2 permanently sequestered.

What Is The Use Value Of Irrigation Water From The High Plains Aquifer?, Federico García Suárez, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Jan 2019

What Is The Use Value Of Irrigation Water From The High Plains Aquifer?, Federico García Suárez, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This study provides an estimate of the gross value of irrigation water from the U.S. High Plains

Aquifer. We estimate a yield function for aggregated crop biomass production, based on countylevel

observations for 1960–2007. This study found that irrigation increases total biomass yield in this

region by an average of 51%. We estimate the average gross annual value of irrigation as of 2007 to

be $196 per acre, for a total of about $3 billion across the aquifer. We also estimate that on average

across the aquifer, exposure to 24 hours of temperatures above 33C (one degree day) reduces biomass …

Wildlife Viewing: The Impact Of Money-Back Guarantees, Takahiro Kubo, Taro Mieno, Koichi Kuriyama Jan 2019

Wildlife Viewing: The Impact Of Money-Back Guarantees, Takahiro Kubo, Taro Mieno, Koichi Kuriyama

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Wildlife sightings are not always guaranteed. To address this risk, tour operators often offer a money-back guarantee as a refund mechanism. However, studies have overlooked the influences of such refund mechanisms on tourists' tour participation decisions and tourism revenue. We conducted choice experiments to examine the impact of such mechanisms using a case of Amami rabbit tourism in Japan. We found that the guarantee significantly influences the tourists’ decision-making and tour revenue. In particular, we found that the expected tourist participation rate and tour guide revenue vary drastically depending on the probability of the rabbit encounter. The maximum expected revenue …
