Slurs And Register: A Case Study In Meaning Pluralism, Justina Diaz-Legaspe, Chang Liu, Robert Stainton Jan 2019

Slurs And Register: A Case Study In Meaning Pluralism, Justina Diaz-Legaspe, Chang Liu, Robert Stainton

Philosophy Publications

Most theories of slurs fall into one of two families: those which understand slurring terms to involve special descriptive/informational content (however conveyed), and those which understand them to encode special emotive/expressive content. Our view is that both offer essential insights, but that part of what sets slurs apart is use-theoretic content. In particular, we urge that slurring words belong at the intersection of a number of categories in a sociolinguistic register taxonomy, one that usually includes [+slang] and [+vulgar] and always includes [-polite] and [+derogatory]. Thus, e.g., what distinguishes ‘Chinese’ from ‘chink’ is neither a peculiar sort of descriptive nor …

Pogil Beyond Stem, Sue Joyner Guillaud, Margie Ruppel Jan 2019

Pogil Beyond Stem, Sue Joyner Guillaud, Margie Ruppel

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter focuses on POGIL's extension and application in non-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, building on the foundations of POGIL previously discussed in this book. The theory, process, guided inquiry, and evidence of student success are applicable to non-STEM disciplines; however, each discipline may require a few adjustments in content and delivery. Many non-STEM disciplines rely heavily on process skills, which are paramount to the POGIL process. Details on applications to the fields of second language (L2) learning and information literacy serve as case studies, with evidence of learning enhancement and similar foundational learning theories.

The Effects Of Students’ Perceptions Of Teachers’ Anti-Bullying Behavior On Bullying Vicimization: Is Sense Of School Belonging A Mediator?, Diana M. Doumas, Aida Midgett Jan 2019

The Effects Of Students’ Perceptions Of Teachers’ Anti-Bullying Behavior On Bullying Vicimization: Is Sense Of School Belonging A Mediator?, Diana M. Doumas, Aida Midgett

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study evaluated the influence of students’ perceptions of teachers’ anti-bullying behavior and sense of school belonging on bullying victimization among elementary school students (N = 110). We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test a mediational model in which we hypothesized sense of school belonging would mediate the relationship between students’ perceptions of teacher behavior and bullying victimization. Results supported the mediational model, indicating students’ perceptions of teachers’ anti-bullying behavior was positively related to sense of school belonging, which in turn was related to lower levels of bullying victimization. Findings highlight the importance of teachers in fostering a …

Factors And Considerations For Change At James Madison University, Robert P. Zaepfel Jr.

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The objective of this qualitative case study was to develop a thematic change model and taxonomy of change factors specifically designed for higher education practitioners at James Madison University (JMU). This research will provide resources to guide future institutional change at JMU while focusing on the practical nature of applying resources and techniques to facilitate organizational change. This study will bridge the gap between academic research and practitioner application by creating a cyclical theoretical framework grounding the exploration of complex higher education change dynamics at JMU. Individual interviews focused on recent change events were conducted with participants identified through the …

How Does Perceived Destination Social Responsibility Impact Revisit Intentions: The Mediating Roles Of Destination Preference And Relationship Quality, Lujun Su, Yinghua Huang Jan 2019

How Does Perceived Destination Social Responsibility Impact Revisit Intentions: The Mediating Roles Of Destination Preference And Relationship Quality, Lujun Su, Yinghua Huang

Faculty Publications

This study applied the relationship quality theory to examine how destination social responsibility (DSR) impacts revisit intentions through the mediation of destination preference and relationship quality (i.e., tourist satisfaction and identification). An integrated model was proposed and tested by using survey data from an urban tourism attraction in China. The findings indicate that DSR positively impacts destination preference and tourist satisfaction, but it does not have a significant influence on tourist-destination identification. Destination preference directly affects tourist satisfaction and tourist-destination identification, which in turn positively influences revisit intentions. This study offered theoretical and practical contributions to the research of destination …

What Is Known About The Impacts Of Supervised Injection Sites On Community Safety And Wellbeing? A Systematic Review, Laura Huey

Sociology Publications

To learn more about what the social scientific research literature can tell us about the impacts of supervised injection sites (SIS, also known as ‘safer injection sites’ and ‘drug consumption rooms’) on local community safety and wellbeing, the author conducted a systematic review of the recent published research on SISs and their relationships to issues of crime, disorder and non-user public health (2000-2018). After initial searches were conducted, thirteen studies were selected and reviewed, the results of which were then synthesized to answer the research questions posed. Overall findings indicate there are no appreciable increases in crime and disorder following …

Preparing Police Leaders Of The Future: An Educational Needs Assessment, Laura Huey, Hina Kalyal, Hillary Peladeau Jan 2019

Preparing Police Leaders Of The Future: An Educational Needs Assessment, Laura Huey, Hina Kalyal, Hillary Peladeau

Sociology Publications

Given that there is very little research available – in Canada or elsewhere – on police leadership education and training, and police are being challenged to work in increasingly complex decision and task environments, an empirical analysis in this area is both timely and of significance utility for shaping both public policy and police practice. This study answers the following research questions:

RQ1. What forms of police leader education and training currently exist for Canadian police leaders?

RQ2. Are these courses and/or programs suitable for the needs of police leaders given the demands they face?

To answer these questions, we …

Transport Connectivity: Sticky Floors And Glass Ceilings: Women’S Employment In The Transport Sector, Bipasha Baruah Jan 2019

Transport Connectivity: Sticky Floors And Glass Ceilings: Women’S Employment In The Transport Sector, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Women choose to work in the transport sector for the same reasons that men do: for decent incomes, good benefits, company reputation, availability of work and opportunities to build careers. Yet, women accounted for less than 15% of the global transportation workforce in 2017. Women’s under-representation in this sector is largely attributable to transportation being a non-traditional occupation (NTO) for women. An NTO is any occupation in which women or men comprise less than 25% of the workforce. Thus, nursing and primary education, for example, are NTOs for men in most OECD countries whereas mining, construction and transportation are NTOs …

Women, Irrigation And Social Norms In Egypt: ‘The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same?’, Bipasha Baruah Jan 2019

Women, Irrigation And Social Norms In Egypt: ‘The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same?’, Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

This paper explores how women and men participate in irrigation activities in Egypt, drawing from a survey administered to 200 men and 202 women and qualitative information from 150 interviews. Women participated in irrigation activities in 78% of the 402 households surveyed, suggesting that women are far more actively engaged in irrigation efforts in Egypt, and possibly in the wider MENA region, than is generally assumed. The diffusion of certain irrigation technologies such as drip, sprinkler and tatweer in recent years has made irrigation more socially acceptable for women to perform although some women had also been irrigating land long …

Disinformation And Misinformation Triangle: A Conceptual Model For ‘Fake News’ Epidemic, Causal Factors And Interventions, Victoria Rubin Jan 2019

Disinformation And Misinformation Triangle: A Conceptual Model For ‘Fake News’ Epidemic, Causal Factors And Interventions, Victoria Rubin

Data and Test Instruments

Purpose (mandatory) This position paper treats disinformation and misinformation (intentionally deceptive and unintentionally inaccurate misleading information, respectively) as a socio-cultural technology-enabled epidemic in digital news, propagated via social media.Design/methodology/approach (mandatory) The proposed Disinformation and Misinformation Triangle is a conceptual model that identifies the three minimal causal factors occurring simultaneously to facilitate the spread of the epidemic at the societal level.Findings (mandatory) Following the epidemiological Disease Triangle model, the three interacting causal factors are translated into the digital news context: (1) the virulent pathogens are falsifications, clickbait, satirical ‘fakes’ and other deceptive or misleading news content; (2) the susceptible hosts are …

Teachers` Dual Commitment To The Organization And Occupation: A Person-Centered Investigation, John P. Meyer, Alexandre J. S. Morin, Laura J. Stanley, Elyse R. Maltin Jan 2019

Teachers` Dual Commitment To The Organization And Occupation: A Person-Centered Investigation, John P. Meyer, Alexandre J. S. Morin, Laura J. Stanley, Elyse R. Maltin

Psychology Publications

This study extends previous commitment research by applying person-centered analytic techniques to identify and compare profiles of affective, normative, and continuance commitment to the organization and occupation. Latent profile analyses applied to data from 336 Canadian teachers revealed five profiles with unique combinations of the three commitment mindsets across the two targets. Differences observed across profiles in teachers’ turnover intention and physical and psychological well-being are used to illustrate the benefits of taking a more holistic approach to the investigation of commitment compared to analyses involving individual targets and/or mindsets. Implications for commitment theory, future research, and practice are discussed.

Estrogens And Androgens In The Prefrontal Cortex: Relevance For Cognition And Decision-Making, Elizabeth Hampson Jan 2019

Estrogens And Androgens In The Prefrontal Cortex: Relevance For Cognition And Decision-Making, Elizabeth Hampson

Psychology Publications

Organizational and activational effects of reproductive steroids regulate many aspects of brain function in nonhuman species, including certain cognitive functions. These actions are often exerted in a region- or pathway-specific manner in the CNS to promote reproductive objectives. Similar effects are thought to occur in human brains. Growing evidence suggests that 2 major families of hormones, estrogens and androgens, may influence cognitive and motivational processes. This chapter will briefly review findings from humans and nonhuman primates suggesting that the prefrontal cortex is an important target for estrogens and androgens. Hormonal regulation in the frontal cortex is discussed in terms of …

A Systems Dynamics Simulation Study Of Network Public Opinion Evolution Mechanism, Ge Gao, Tianyong Wang, Xianrong Zheng, Yong Chen, Xiaobo Xu

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

The factors that affect formation and dissemination of public opinion have been studied for a long time. However, the findings are disparate and fragmented, given the characteristics of netizens and new media in the Big Data era. To this end, this article introduces eight mechanisms working on formation and dissemination of public opinion on network. Based on system dynamics, this article further proposes a comprehensive causal relationship model to explore the factors affecting the consequence of public opinion on network. Particularly, the role of government is taken into consideration in this model. A simulation with Vensim PLE is conducted. The …

Communicating Across Age Lines: A Perspective On The State Of The Scholarship Of Intergenerational Communication In Health Sciences Libraries, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Rachel Keiko Stark Jan 2019

Communicating Across Age Lines: A Perspective On The State Of The Scholarship Of Intergenerational Communication In Health Sciences Libraries, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Rachel Keiko Stark

Publications

The purpose of this study was to review the existing literature on intergenerational workplace communication to identify trends or research pertaining to medical or health sciences library employees. Although the authors found no published literature that explicitly addresses intergenerational communication in health sciences libraries, it is worthwhile to explore the literature in related fields to identify applicable points of comparison to the experiences of health sciences librarians. This includes intergenerational communication research in management and leadership studies and medical literature, and the exploration of other intergenerational issues in the library literature.

The Economic Value Of A Place-Based Resource For Regional Development, Aisling Conwaylenihan, Helen Mcguirk Jan 2019

The Economic Value Of A Place-Based Resource For Regional Development, Aisling Conwaylenihan, Helen Mcguirk

Irish Business Journal

Regional economic development has long been acknowledged as an important objective of government policy. Natural resources are also recognised as drivers of economic development. However, the importance of place-based resources such as peripheral coastlines and Harbour areas are less understood. This research provides insights into an industry based on its region’s natural resource and the value it generates for sustainable economic development. Using the world’s second largest natural Harbour region, the current research measures the economic activities associated with the Marine Leisure Industry in Cork Harbour, and estimates the economic impact on the local economy. The research establishes a multiplier …

Recruiting And Retaining People With Disabilities For Qualitative Health Research: Challenges And Solutions, Jennifer R. Banas, Susan Magasi, Kim The, David E. Victorson Jan 2019

Recruiting And Retaining People With Disabilities For Qualitative Health Research: Challenges And Solutions, Jennifer R. Banas, Susan Magasi, Kim The, David E. Victorson

Health Sciences and Physical Education Faculty Publications

There are 56.7 million people with disabilities (PWD) living in the United States; yet, PWD are significantly underrepresented in health research. Even when researchers purposively seek to include PWD in studies, challenges emerge related to recruitment and retention, leading to inadequate representation and surface understandings of this population. This in turn contributes to the perpetuation of implicit and explicit health disparities that are already experienced by this population. Grounded within a qualitative, community-based participatory health research framework, we highlight challenges associated with recruiting and retaining PWD in health research, including a critical analysis of the research enterprise structure, how this …
