Endogenous Market Formation And Monetary Trade: An Experiment, Gabriele Camera, Dror Goldberg, Avi Weiss
Endogenous Market Formation And Monetary Trade: An Experiment, Gabriele Camera, Dror Goldberg, Avi Weiss
ESI Working Papers
The theory of money assumes decentralized bilateral exchange and excludes centralized multilateral exchange. However, endogenizing the exchange process is critical for understanding the conditions that support the use of money. We develop a “travelling game” to study the emergence of decentralized and centralized exchange, theoretically and experimentally. Players located on separate islands can either trade locally, or pay a cost to trade elsewhere, so decentralized and centralized markets can both emerge in equilibrium. The former minimize trade costs through monetary exchange; the latter maximizes overall surplus through non-monetary exchange. Monetary trade emerges when coordination is problematic, while centralized trade emerges …

1907 - Handbook Of American Indians North Of Mexico, Part I; Frederick Webb Hodge
Miscellaneous Publications
Lack of knowledge of the aborigines and of their languages led to many errors on the part of the early explorers and settlers. Soon after the organization of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879, the work of recording a tribal synonymy was formally assigned to Henry W. Henshaw. The 2,500 tribal names and synonyms appearing in this list were taken chiefly from James Mooney's manuscript; the linguistic classification was the result of the work that the Bureau had been conducting under Henshaw's supervision. The handbook contains a descriptive list of the stocks, confederacies, tribes, tribal divisions, and settlements north …

1916 - The Founding Of Spanish California, Charles Edward Chapman
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The first seven chapters of this book discuss the advance of the Spanish conquest overland toward the Colorado and Gila rivers, from 1521 to 1773, with some reference also to the occupation of the two Californias before the mainland conquest had reached those rivers. This portion of the book was presented as a doctoral thesis in May, 1915, at the University of California, in substantially the same form as it appeared here, under the title Preliminaries of the Spanish advance from Sonora to California, 1687-1773. Then follows the principal part of the work, to which were added two concluding …

1913 - Life And Apostolic Labors Of The Venerable Father JuníPero Serra; Francisco Palou, Translation By C. Scott Williams
Franciscan Publications
Though Palou's "Life and Apostolic Labors of the Venerable Father Fray Junipero Serra" is the first work dealing with the history of Alta California; and though it was originally published in the City of Mexico in 1787, it had never been translated for English readers. A few chapters from the original were translated into English and issued by the Reverend Father Adam, Vicar General of the Diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles, in the year 1890. In 1913, Professor C. Scott Williams under the supervision of George Wharton James translated Paulo’s work with Father Englehardt reviewing the manuscript for accuracy.

Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song
Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song
Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital
Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Prior to this study, to my knowledge, no hermeneutic phenomenological research of face …

Structural Change, Productivity, And The Shift To Services: The Case Of Indonesia, Nabil Rizky Ryandiansyah
Structural Change, Productivity, And The Shift To Services: The Case Of Indonesia, Nabil Rizky Ryandiansyah
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Since Chenery & Syrquin (1975), the pattern of transition from agriculture-heavy economies to industry and then later to services has been central to growth literatures. But recent empirical works have casted doubts on whether developing countries are able to follow the same path. This paper analyzes whether structural change in Indonesia has been productivity-enhancing. This paper finds that structural change from 1998-2014 has not been able to generate impact on economy-wide productivity. This paper also explores possible determinants of the direction of structural change. This paper does not find commodity dependence nor human capital to have clear association with low …

The pre (GFC) period used in this study is between January 2003 and July 2007, whereas the post GFC is between August 2007 and December 2016. The results of this study are …
Financial Development And Income Inequality In Indonesia: A Sub-National Level Analysis, Harry Aginta
Financial Development And Income Inequality In Indonesia: A Sub-National Level Analysis, Harry Aginta
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
This study constructs financial inclusion indicator and analyzes the link of financial inclusion and income inequality for 33 provinces in Indonesia. By using Fixed Effect Panel Model, we find financial inclusion appears to have insignificant effect to on inequality at national level. While at sub-national level, adding other variables such as GRDP, years of schooling, and trade openness, we find financial inclusion appears to have negative and significant impact on income inequality in manufacture and mining-based provinces, not in agriculture-based. The results suggest that financial inclusion helps to lower income inequality when economic condition encourage people to utilize financial access …

Parents Of Children With Significant Disabilities Describe Their Children’S Eating Habits: A Phenomenological Study, Brianna M. Grumstrup, Maryann Demchak
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative phenomenological study, through interviews, aimed to understand the experiences of parents of children with significant multiple disabilities about their children’s eating habits. Review of literature indicated disparities in health between people with significant disabilities (SD) that include intellectual disabilities (ID), intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD), or multiple impairments (MI) and people who are typically developing. People with significant disabilities are at a higher risk for obesity, future weight gain, underweight and/or malnutrition, adherence to a less-healthy diet, and problem behaviors during meal time. Semi-structured initial and follow-up interviews used general questions to gather data, which were subsequently coded and examined …

1910 - The United States Consulate In California
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
This is the story of the first and only United States consulate in California. Thomas Oliver Larkin served in four different official capacities under the United States government -- as United States consul in California from 1844 to 1848; as confidential agent of the government from 1846 to 1848; as navy agent from 1847 to 1849; and as a naval store keeper from 1847 to 1848. Rumors of war with Mexico over Texas and later with England over the Oregon boundary reach California.
When Larkin became consul for the United States, the US consular service was on an uncertain basis …

The primary cause of this accident is listed as a ‘Field control inadequacy’ because the person in charge at the site had decided to move fuzed explosive hazards and did not enforce safety distances that would have reduced the casualty toll in the event of an accident.
The secondary cause is listed as ‘Inadequate training’, because, while all of the victims had extensive experience, it seems that their training had not prepared them to conduct this task safely.
It is surprising that five ex-pat specialists who had been supervising the teams of national deminers who found the mines should have …
