Simulation Enhances Soft Skills Among Inter-Professionals Participating In An International Service-Learning Experience To A Resource-Limited Country, Suzanne Trotter, Sharon Dunnivan-Mitchell Jan 2019

Simulation Enhances Soft Skills Among Inter-Professionals Participating In An International Service-Learning Experience To A Resource-Limited Country, Suzanne Trotter, Sharon Dunnivan-Mitchell

Physical Therapy Collection

Soft skills are the hallmark of a master healthcare provider. One of the most effective ways to teach soft skills is through service-learning. Evidence suggests that adding simulation as part of a service-learning team’s pre-departure training (PDT) will better prepare them to resolve ethical and cultural dilemmas plus facilitate soft skills. We hypothesized that simulation could improve soft skills of healthcare providers delivering rehabilitation services on a one-week service-learning experience in Guatemala

A convenience sample of 21 physical and occupational therapy students and clinicians who participated in four 1-hour PDTs were included in this qualitative study using grounded-theory methods. Training …

Counterfactuals With Latent Information, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris Jan 2019

Counterfactuals With Latent Information, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We describe a methodology for making counterfactual predictions when the information held by strategic agents is a latent parameter. The analyst observes behavior which is rationalized by a Bayesian model, in which agents maximize expected utility, given partial and differential information about payoff-relevant states of the world, represented as an information structure. A counterfactual prediction is desired about behavior in another strategic setting, under the hypothesis that the distribution of the state and agents’ information about the state are held fixed. When the data and the desired counterfactual prediction pertain to environments with finitely many states, players, and actions, there …

Design For Living Complexities, Peter J. Taylor Jan 2019

Design For Living Complexities, Peter J. Taylor

Working Papers in Critical, Creative and Reflective Practice

Lectures from a 12-session course that addresses the intersection of design with critical thinking. Design in this course means intentionality in construction, which involves a range of materials, a sequence of steps, and principles that inform the choice of materials and the steps. Design also always involves putting people, as well as materials, into place. This happens by working with the known properties of people, as well as the known properties of material, and trying out new arrangements to work around their constraints (at least temporarily). Critical thinking, as I define it, involves understanding ideas and practices better when we …

Media Ethnography: Demands Alternative, Bishal Kumar Bhandari Mr Jan 2019

Media Ethnography: Demands Alternative, Bishal Kumar Bhandari Mr

The Qualitative Report

The heart and soul of ethnography lies in anthropological study within specific caste, ethnicity, and gender. In mass media research, the anthropological ethnography dominates through some of the aspects that focuses on geographical locations and ethnicity which is not relevant in the age of media and technology. The mass media has gained its own gravity, uniqueness, and distinctiveness at present as it fulfills the need and interest of individuals/society. As such fieldwork, participants, and positioning a debate within the realm of “anthropological ethnography” is not sufficient to understand the subjectivities of mass media. In such a context, this article analyzes …

Cancer Blog Narratives: The Experience Of Under-Fifty Women With Breast Cancer During Different Times After Diagnosis, Maria Luisa Martino, Anna Gargiulo, Daniela Lemmo, Giorgia Margherita

The Qualitative Report

The recent literature shows an increase of breast cancer in women under 50, however still few are the studies which analyse the impact of the disease in this specific target age. This study aims at exploring the most prevalent topics in Italian cancer blogs of women who have received a breast cancer diagnosis before the age of 50, in order to understand their experience of illness and the characteristics of women’s narrations at different times after diagnosis (1 year, 2 years, 3 years). We collected the textual corpus of 4 Italian breast cancer blogs and performed a thematic analysis. Five …

Behavior Change Techniques For Reducing Interviewer Contributions To Total Survey Error, Brad Edwards Jan 2019

Behavior Change Techniques For Reducing Interviewer Contributions To Total Survey Error, Brad Edwards

Interviewer Workshop, 2019: Interviewers and Their Effects from a Total Survey Error Perspective

In the total survey error paradigm, nonsampling errors can be difficult to quantify, especially errors that occur in the data collection phase of face-to-face surveys. Field interviewers play “… dual roles as recruiters and data collectors…” (West et al, 2018), and are therefore potential contributors to both nonresponse error and measurement error. Recent advances in technology, paradata, and performance dashboards offer an opportunity to observe interviewer effects almost at the source in real time, and to intervene quickly to curtail them. Edwards, Maitland, and Connor (2017) report on an experimental program using rapid feedback of CARI coding results (within 72 …

Contributions Of Mainstream Sexual Media Exposure To Sexual Attitudes, Perceived Peer Norms, And Sexual Behavior: A Meta-Analysis, Sarah M. Coyne, L. Monique Ward, Savannah L. Kroff, Emilie J. Davis, Hailey G. Holmgren, Alexander C. Jensen, Sarah E. Erickson, Lee W. Essig

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Decades of research have examined the impact of exposure to nonexplicit portrayals of sexual content in media. There is only one meta-analysis on this topic, which suggests that exposure to “sexy media” has little to no effect on sexual behavior. There are a number of limitations to the existing meta-analysis, and the purpose of this updated meta-analysis was to examine associations between exposure to sexual media and users' attitudes and sexual behavior.

Methods: A thorough literature search was conducted to find relevant articles. Each study was coded for associations between exposure to sexual media and one of six outcomes …

Predatory & Deceptive Publishing Pitfalls And Practical Tips: Helping Faculty & Students To Identify & Avoid Questionable Publishing Practices, Sarah A. Norris Jan 2019

Predatory & Deceptive Publishing Pitfalls And Practical Tips: Helping Faculty & Students To Identify & Avoid Questionable Publishing Practices, Sarah A. Norris

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common venue for faculty and students, to publish scholarly research. However, this publishing model often prompts many issues and concerns -- one of which is predatory (or, deceptive) publishing practices. These publishers rely on a variety of strategies and deceptive tactics to give the illusion that they are credible and high quality. With this in mind, it is often difficult for faculty and students to distinguish between a credible open access journal and a predatory one. This presentation will provide practical tips on how to facilitate information about …

Lower The Barrier & Be Empowered: Creating And Including Linked Data Vocabularies For Digital Collections, Sai Deng

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Linked data has been explored and adopted by the library and archive community in recent years, but it has remained a relatively high bar to implement for most librarians and catalogers in their daily work. To lower the barrier, the librarians at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries have adopted open source tools and platforms such as OpenRefine and Wikidata to their workflows to include linked data for their collections in the digital repositories as well as the library catalog. This presentation will review digital repositories' capabilities in accommodating linked data and show several cases of adding linked data …

Modernized Collaborations: Technologies Affecting Librarian Research Connections, Ngoc-Yen Tran, Emily K. Chan

Faculty and Staff Publications

There is no doubt that now, more than ever, technologies have made it easier for library researchers to connect and collaborate with one another. The increase in adoption and use of cloud-based products that support group work in higher education (such as the G Suite for Education) have also encouraged the collaborative nature of library and information science (LIS) research and publications.

In our presentation, we will present the results of our study in identifying the methods by which librarians find collaborators for research projects. Employing a mixed methods study, we collected survey data from librarians on the tools and …

The Costs Of Obtaining Environmental Outcomes Through Coastal Habitat Restoration, Shea Gould, Matthew G. Interis Jan 2019

The Costs Of Obtaining Environmental Outcomes Through Coastal Habitat Restoration, Shea Gould, Matthew G. Interis

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Studies examining the costs of coastal habitat restoration have focused on the cost per acre of restoration or on cost efficiency of various restoration methods. On the other hand, studies examining the benefits of restoration have focused on various ecosystem services that more directly affect welfare including amenity value, storm protection, nutrient retention and biodiversity. We examine a set of 133 Gulf of Mexico coastal habitat restoration projects to estimate the cost of obtaining average annual habitat units (AAHUs), a measure which captures the quantity and, importantly, quality of habitat restored, which is one of the more direct ecosystem service …

The Role Of Libraries In A Digital Age, Ethan Annis Jan 2019

The Role Of Libraries In A Digital Age, Ethan Annis

Archbishop Alemany Library | Faculty Presentations

Presented to Dominican University of California faculty and staff, on November 27, 2018, by Ethan Annis. It explores the role of academic libraries and academic librarians at a time when print book borrowing and reference questions have both declined by about 75%. During the same period, libraries' gate counts, usage of digital resources, the prevalence of predatory academic journals and the number of engagements with fake news have all increased. The presenter proposes that libraries decrease space devoted to stacks and librarians teach students to distinguish between reliable, empirically based information and fiction. It also explores options for using the …

Film, Dreams, And Mmorpgs: Cultural Leakage And Digital Gaming Literacy In Inception, Taylor Katz, J.D. Wallace Jan 2019

Film, Dreams, And Mmorpgs: Cultural Leakage And Digital Gaming Literacy In Inception, Taylor Katz, J.D. Wallace

Communication and Sociology

The confluence of art, technology, and texts is unavoidable and yet remains under-addressed in scholarship. Technological artifacts, while prevalent in digital gaming, are seldom examined in terms of their contribution to other artistic artifacts. Specifically, MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) as texts are rarely considered in terms of their relevance to digital and artistic literacy. Residing within are rich cultural discourses that address the entertainment of escapism and their affiliated connection to addiction, loss of identity, and violence resulting from prolonged immersion. Not surprisingly these tensions are reflected in other texts such as film. In the current examination, a …
