Bicentennial Commemoration Has To Be More Than Just An Anniversary, Tan K. B. Eugene Feb 2019

Bicentennial Commemoration Has To Be More Than Just An Anniversary, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan examined the significance of the bicentennial commemoration to mark the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles on January 29, 1819. He cautioned that such commemorations cannot be just about sentimentality, novelty or the feel-good factor of how far Singapore has come along but should instead encourage us to think and remember as well as to learn the invaluable lessons of our past.

Apples Or Oranges? Identification Of Fundamental Load Shape Profiles For Benchmarking Buildings Using A Large And Diverse Dataset, June Young Park, Xiya Yang, Clayton Miller, Pandarasamy Arjunan, Zoltan Nagy Feb 2019

Apples Or Oranges? Identification Of Fundamental Load Shape Profiles For Benchmarking Buildings Using A Large And Diverse Dataset, June Young Park, Xiya Yang, Clayton Miller, Pandarasamy Arjunan, Zoltan Nagy

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Buildings are responsible for 30–40% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption worldwide. Thus, reducing the overall energy use and associated emissions in buildings is crucial for meeting sustainability goals for the future. In recent years, smart energy meters have been deployed to enable monitoring of energy use data with hourly or sub-hourly temporal resolution. The concurrent rise of information technologies and data analytics enabled the development of novel applications such as customer segmentation, load profiling, demand response, energy forecasting and anomaly detection. In this paper, we address load profiling and benchmarking, i.e., determining peer groups for buildings. …

Sanctions For Nuclear Inhibition: Comparing Sanctions Conditions Between Iran And North Korea, Inwook Kim, Jung-Chul Lee Feb 2019

Sanctions For Nuclear Inhibition: Comparing Sanctions Conditions Between Iran And North Korea, Inwook Kim, Jung-Chul Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Whendo sanctions succeed in nuclear inhibition? Is there a generalizable frameworkto estimate sanction effectiveness against nuclear aspirants? Instead ofrelying on partial equilibrium analysis, we conceptualize sanctions as threesequential phases—imposition of economic pain, conversation to politicalpressure, and creation (or failure thereof) of zone of possible agreement(ZOPA). The effectiveness of each phase is subject to phase-specific contextualvariables, an aggregation of which helps measure individual sanction’s effectiveness, conduct cross-case comparison, and estimate one’s replicability in other cases. To illustrate its analytical utility, we analyze the divergent sanctionoutcomes between Iran in 2012-2015 and North Korea 2013-2017. Iran waseconomically more vulnerable, politically less resilient, and its bargainingposition …

Memory bias is a risk factor for depression. In two independent studies, the efficacy of one CBM-Memory session on negative memory bias and depressive symptoms was tested in vulnerable samples. We compared positive to neutral (control) CBM-Memory trainings in highly-ruminating individuals (N = 101) and individuals with elevated depressive symptoms (N = 100). In both studies, participants studied positive, neutral, and negative Swahili words paired with their translations. In five study–test blocks, they were then prompted to retrieve either only the positive or neutral translations. Immediately following the training and one week later, we tested cued recall of all translations …

Cross-Sectional Comparison Of Health-Span Phenotypes In Young Versus Geriatric Marmosets, C. N. Ross, J. Adams, O. Gonzalez, E. Dick, L. Giavedoni, V. L. Hodara, Kimberley A. Phillips, Anna D. Rigodanzo, B. Kasinath, S. D. Tardif

Psychology Faculty Research

The development of the marmoset as a translational model for healthspan and lifespan studies relies on the characterization of health parameters in young and geriatric marmosets. This cross‐sectional study examined health phenotypes in marmosets for five domains of interest for human health and aging: mobility, cognition, metabolism, homeostasis, and immune function. Geriatric marmosets were found to have significant executive function impairment when compared to young animals. While geriatric animals did not show gross abnormalities in mobility and measures of locomotion, their types of movement were altered from young animals. Geriatric marmosets had alterations in cardiac function, with significantly increased mean …

Do Women Managers Keep Firms Out Of Trouble? Evidence From Corporate Litigation And Policies, Binay K. Adhikari, Anup Agrawal, James Malm

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We find that firms where women have more power in the top management team, measured by female executives’ plurality and pay slice, face fewer operations-related lawsuits. This effect is robust to several treatments of endogeneity and does not appear to be driven by female executives' greater willingness to settle the cases. Evidence from a simultaneous equations approach suggests that firms where women executives have more power avoid lawsuits partly by avoiding some risky but value-increasing firm policies, such as more aggressive R&D, intensive advertising, and policies inimical to other parties.

Collaborations Between Speech-Language Pathology And Early Childhood Special Education Graduate Programs, Abbie Olszewski, Lindsay Diamond, Ann Bingham

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

There is limited documentation on interprofessional education (IPE) between graduate speech-language pathology and early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE) programs. Because collaborative relationships can lead to IPE, this study examined the current state of collaborative relationships between speech-language pathology and EI/ECSE graduate programs and faculty. A mixed-method design was conducted. Closed- and open-ended survey questions were sent to representatives of 266 graduate speech-language pathology programs. There was a 29% (77/266) overall response rate. Out of 77 graduate speech-language pathology programs, 27% (21/77) indicated an emphasis in EI, 17% (13/77) in ECSE, and 14% (11/77) in EI/ECSE combined. Respondents reported collaborative …

Symmetry And Measuring: Ways To Teach The Foundations Of Mathematics Inspired By Yupiaq Elders, Jerry Lipka, Barbara Adams, Monica Wong, David Koester, Karen Francois

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Evident in human prehistory and across immense cultural variation in human activities, symmetry has been perceived and utilized as an integrative and guiding principle. In our long-term collaborative work with Indigenous Knowledge holders, particularly Yupiaq Eskimos of Alaska and Carolinian Islanders in Micronesia, we were struck by the centrality of symmetry and measuring as a comparison-of-quantities, and the practical and conceptual role of qukaq [center] and ayagneq [a place to begin]. They applied fundamental mathematical principles associated with symmetry and measuring in their everyday activities and in making artifacts. Inspired by their example, this paper explores the question: Could symmetry …

Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D. Jan 2019

Revised Scientific Review: Minimum Age For Swim Lessons, Stephen J. Langendorfer Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The question addressed in the original scientific review (2009) was rephrased as Does sufficient scientific evidence exist to support setting a minimum age for swimming lessons? for this triennial review. Addressing the research question is significant because strong differences of opinion about the appropriate age(s) for initiating learn-to-swim lessons have existed among the pediatric medical profession, aquatic professionals and agencies, and proprietary programs and swim schools for over four decades. The question has implications for the appropriate purposes, pedagogies, and outcomes associated with swimming experiences for infants and young children that will be addressed in a subsequent review. The revised …

The Moral Quandary Of Testing On Animals, Rachel Robinson-Greene Jan 2019

The Moral Quandary Of Testing On Animals, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The topic of testing on animals as a form of scientific research has been contentious for quite some time. In most cases, the discussion tends to focus on whether it is morally permissible to test various products and procedures on animals in order to determine whether they would be safe and beneficial for human use. Animal experimentation is not always conducted simply for the benefit of human beings—sometimes the parties that stand to benefit from the research are other non-human animals, often including other members of the same species as the animals being tested.

International Review of Humanities Studies

This article is an excerpt from an undergraduate thesis of the same title which focuses on A Series of Unfortunate Events, a children‟s book series by Lemony Snicket. This thesis explores how a culture of fear shapes childhood, which is represented in the series. By using qualitative textual analysis the research discusses how the series represent the way childhood is shaped by a culture of fear through the depiction of various characters and social institutions in the novels. This research also explores the author‟s attempts in challenging the notion that children are vulnerable by analyzing the Baudelaires‟ identity and vulnerability. …

De-Radicalization Of Fundamentalism Through The Thought Of Mohammed Arkoun, Muhammad Rezan, Naupal Asnawi Jan 2019

De-Radicalization Of Fundamentalism Through The Thought Of Mohammed Arkoun, Muhammad Rezan, Naupal Asnawi

International Review of Humanities Studies

Fundamentalism in religion has become an important issue in people's lives, especially in areas with high heterogeneity. The emergence of various cases of attacks against innocent people in the name of religion, has become an irony of its own, especially for religious believers. The irony arises when religion teaches peace in diversity, but there are many irregularities in its implementation. Various factors in the emergence of fundamentalism in religion do not necessarily become a reason for the lack of efforts to deradicalize this understanding. Mohammed Arkoun, through his various studies, has raised the significance of a re-understanding of religious texts …
