Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Historically, archives have told the stories of the dominant society. Increasingly, archives are exploring and filling some of the silences left by the exclusion of many voices. Oral history is a way of actively collecting stories which may not exist in written form. Both the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s LGBTQ+ Voices: The Queer Omaha Archives Oral History Project and the University of Nebraska at Kearney Archives and Special Collections’ Coming to the Plains: Latin@ Stories in Central Nebraska project engage members of diverse communities in telling their own stories. This session will talk about the origins of each project, …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Remote sensing has provided expanded temporal and spatial range to the study of harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in western Lake Erie, allowing for a greater understanding of bloom dynamics than is possible through in situ sampling. However, satellites are limited in their ability to specifically target cyanobacteria and can only observe the water within the first optical depth. This limits the ability of remote sensing to make conclusions about full water column cyanoHAB biomass if cyanobacteria are vertically stratified. FluoroProbe data were collected at nine stations across western Lake Erie in 2015 and 2016 and analyzed to characterize spatio-temporal variability …
Issues And Prospects Of Knowledge Sharing In Academic Libraries, Ifeoma Ajie
Issues And Prospects Of Knowledge Sharing In Academic Libraries, Ifeoma Ajie
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In recent years it has been acknowledged that the practice of knowledge management can play an important role to ensure an organisation’s competitive edge within an industry. This paper gives an overview of knowledge sharing in academic libraries. Based on the review of critical literatures by the authors, they infer that knowledge sharing in academic libraries can be influenced by motivators and de-motivators. Activities of knowledge sharing in academic libraries may be on organization level or individual level. Knowledge sharing at both levels is critical to the success or failure of knowledge management inside and outside the academic libraries. The …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Cyber security is rapidly becoming an important aspect of ICT around the globe. In Nigeria there have been increase in the rate of cybercrime and various organizations have become targets of cyber criminals. Cybercrime can pose a high risk to the economy and security of a nation. The most common types of cybercrime committed in Nigerian academic libraries include hacking, cyber-theft, viruses and worms, spamming, financial fraud, identity theft, cyber and website cloning. This paper examines the effectiveness of electronic security systems also known as cyber security in academic libraries in Nigeria. The paper was introduced by understanding what security …

Cognitive abilities underpin the capacity of individuals to build models of their environment and make decisions about how to govern resources. Here, we test the functional intelligences proposition that functionally diverse cognitive abilities within a group are critical to govern common pool resources. We assess the effect of two cognitive abilities, social and general intelligence, on group performance on a resource harvesting and management game involving either a negative or a positive disturbance to the resource base. Our results indicate that under improving conditions (positive disturbance) groups with higher general intelligence perform better. However, when conditions deteriorate (negative disturbance) groups …
Leaking Women: A Genealogy Of Gendered And Racialized Flow, Michelle Fine
Leaking Women: A Genealogy Of Gendered And Racialized Flow, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
Through a feminist and critical race analytic, this paper theorizes the disruptions evoked by leaky women—actually doubly leaky women—those whose nipples, peri-menopausal uterus’ and mouths have “leaked” in ways that rupture/stain/expose the white-patriarchal-capitalist enclosure of work, home and the streets and then dared to leak again by suing for justice in court. In a closing coda, I address the race/class policing dynamics between she who leaks and the “respectable” [usually white] women recruited to plaster up the hole and cauterize the leaker.

Soviet Nationality Policy: Impact On Ethnic Conflict In Abkhazia And South Ossetia, Nevzat Torun
Soviet Nationality Policy: Impact On Ethnic Conflict In Abkhazia And South Ossetia, Nevzat Torun
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to answer two interlinked questions with respect to ethnic conflict in Georgia: Why and how two ethnic groups (Abkhazians and Ossetians) in Georgia sought secession in 1990s rather than accepting unity under a common Georgian roof, and what explains the occurrence of ethnic conflicts between the Abkhazians and Georgians and between the South Ossetians and Georgians?
The central argument of this thesis is that Soviet nationality policy was a foremost driving force in shaping consciousness of being ethnic groups in Georgia and set the stage for the inter-ethnic conflicts of the post-Soviet era. A number of factors …

Automation-Induced Complacency Potential: Development And Validation Of A New Scale, Stephanie Merritt, Alicia Ako-Brew, William Bryant, Amy Staley, Michael Mckenna, Austin Leone, Lei Shirase
Psychology Faculty Works
Complacency, or sub-optimal monitoring of automation performance, has been cited as a contributing factor in numerous major transportation and medical incidents. Researchers are working to identify individual differences that correlate with complacency as one strategy for preventing complacency-related accidents. Automation-induced complacency potential is an individual difference reflecting a general tendency to be complacent across a wide variety of situations which is similar to, but distinct from trust. Accurately assessing complacency potential may improve our ability to predict and prevent complacency in safety-critical occupations. Much past research has employed an existing measure of complacency potential. However, in the 25 years since …

How did a small institution with limited seed funding get faculty buy-in with the OER and textbook affordability movement to the point of $1 million in student savings, two faculty-authored open textbooks (one written collaboratively with graduate students), and several open textbook reviews and adoptions, all within five semesters? OER momentum and awareness of textbook affordability issues is a growing concern in higher education. Learn how we structured an open textbook initiative to incentivize faculty and turn what began as an innovation grant into permanent sustainable funding for the Library Textbook Affordability Program.

The risk posed to an institution by an increasing loan default rate should not be underestimated. The average student loan debt for graduating students is approximately $23,000 nationally. This interactive session will look at how different institutions have approached the topic of financial literacy, and how they have tackled the problem of student loan debt. The session will also provide attendees with a free tool to bring back to their institution to aid in the financial literacy process.
