The Economics Of Social Data: An Introduction, Dirk Bergemann, Alessandro Bonatti
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Large internet platforms collect data from individual users in almost every interaction on the internet. Whenever an individual browses a news website, searches for a medical term or for a travel recommendation, or simply checks the weather forecast on an app, that individual generates data. A central feature of the data collected from the individuals is its social aspect. Namely, the data captured from an individual user is not only informative about this specific individual, but also about users in some metric similar to the individual. Thus, the individual data is really social data. The social nature of the data …

Centralized school assignment algorithms must distinguish between applicants with the same preferences and priorities. This is done with randomly assigned lottery numbers, nonlottery tie-breakers like test scores, or both. The New York City public high school match illustrates the latter, using test scores, grades, and interviews to rank applicants to screened schools, combined with lottery tie-breaking at unscreened schools. We show how to identify causal effects of school attendance in such settings. Our approach generalizes regression discontinuity designs to allow for multiple treatments and multiple running variables, some of which are randomly assigned. Lotteries generate assignment risk at screened as …

Gender, Emotional Displays And Negotiation Outcomes, Horacio Arruda Falcao Filho
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This paper examined whether positive and negative emotional displays influenced negotiation outcomes (value creation and claiming) differentially for female and male negotiators. Also considered was how negotiation dyad gender composition might affect value creation and claiming. I examined recordings from a negotiation exercise (N = 194). Results revealed that when females expressed negative emotions significantly reduced value claiming on the part of those female negotiators. However, the effects of expressing positive emotions on negotiation outcomes did not vary by negotiator gender. The findings suggest that female negotiators do not need to be positive but only need not be negative to …
The Extensive And Intensive Margins Of Time Investments On The Skill Development Of Children And Adolescents, Yi Rachel Tan
The Extensive And Intensive Margins Of Time Investments On The Skill Development Of Children And Adolescents, Yi Rachel Tan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The literature on time investments and skill development has focused on estimating the intensive margins of time investments; This study explores whether including extensive margins might provide additional insights. The extensive and intensive margins of maternal time investments and child time investments (or child self-investments) in three categories of activities (educational, structured and unstructured) on the cognitive and non-cognitive skill development of children (6 to 10 years) and adolescents (11 to 15 years) are quantified by fitting skill production functions with ordinary least squares and family fixed effects specifications. Cognitive skills are assessed by three achievement test scores which indicate …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The perceptions of the librarians reveal the entire functioning of the library. The quality of the library is being measured with collection building, services and other routines of the library. Printed documents are considered as important documents in the Arts and Science College libraries to support the teaching and learning in the college even though the electronic resources are enormously available in the Internet. The printed documents deteriorated due to various reasons. One of the roles of the college librarian is to preserve those and keep them available in usable condition for the present and future generations to know the …

L2 Learners And The Intelligiblity Of The Bostonian And Californian Accents, Russell Paul Kapryn
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis investigates issues of intelligibility through the lens and focus of prosody when the Bostonian and Los Angeles-based accents are heard in casually occurring conversation by native and non-native speakers. Over the spring and summer of 2017, six native speakers and 11 non-native speakers of English were interviewed from having listened to two 2.5 minute audio sample clips of speakers who have these accents. Respondents were asked questions such as what was difficult or easy or whether they could summarize the recordings for me. Findings indicate that while the native speakers often had difficulty with vocabulary due to context, …
Parent Perceptions Of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (Ends) And Restrictions Of Use, Michael Martin
Parent Perceptions Of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (Ends) And Restrictions Of Use, Michael Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Prevalence rates of cigarette smoking are decreasing among U.S. adults, fewer people start smoking each year, and rates of cessation are increasing. However, the rates of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) use are on the rise. ENDS are battery operated devices that involve heating a liquid to create an aerosol or vapor that is then inhaled by the user. They are often referred to as Electronic Cigarettes, e-Cigs, Vaporizers, Vapes, and other terms. These devices are commonly believed to be a relatively harmless and risk-free means of reducing smoking behavior and an aid to smoking cessation. Although still in its …

Revisiting The Miller-Kanazawa Debate: Should Asia Be Afforded More Attention From Evolutionary Psychologists?, Sean Teck Hao Lee
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
A decade ago, Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa and Dr. Geoffrey Miller, two renowned evolutionary psychologists, participated in a debate on whether evolutionary psychologists should focus on Asia in their quest to establish a stronghold in the general field of psychology. Despite painstaking efforts to foster greater receptiveness among Western psychologists toward an evolutionary perspective of psychological phenomena, most still seem to be critically reserved toward it; favoring instead proximate sociocultural explanations of psychological phenomena as stipulated by the standard social science model. Facing such an inertia, Miller suggested that it may perhaps be wise to re-direct the field's efforts on the …

Popular Versus Elite Democracies And Human Rights: Inclusion Makes A Difference, Devin K. Joshi, J. S. Maloy, Timothy M. Peterson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Scholarly research generally finds that democratic governments are more likely to respect human rights than other types of regimes. Different human rights practices among long-standing and affluent democracies therefore present a puzzle. Drawing from democratic theory and comparative institutional studies, we argue more inclusive or "popular" democracies should enforce human rights better than more exclusive or "elite" democracies, even in the face of security threats from armed conflict. Instead of relying on the Freedom House or Polity indexes to distinguish levels of democracy, we adopt a more focused approach to measuring structures of inclusion, the Institutional Democracy Index (IDI), which …

Planning For Two Wheels: A Case Study Of How Portland, Oregon Created A Culture Of Cycling Through Design, Adam N. Norcott
Planning For Two Wheels: A Case Study Of How Portland, Oregon Created A Culture Of Cycling Through Design, Adam N. Norcott
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
As cities grow and the transportation needs of their population change, urban design has become increasingly crucial to a city’s ability to flourish. This shift in the transportation needs of citizens is showing a movement towards bicycling as a form of everyday transportation. One of the cities on the forefront of designing for this transition is Portland, Oregon. The purpose of this study was to examine Portland, Oregon from the perspective of bicycle-friendly urban design. The researcher designed a case study guide to assess the city’s strategies, and the results demonstrated that Portland was able to increase cycling among their …

Feeling Green: The Benefits Of Green Space On Urbanites' Mental Health, Kathryn A. Hoagland
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
This investigation intends to determine the best methods for incorporating public green space into dense urban areas, for the betterment of residents' mental health. Data from studies showing differences in the prevalence of anxiety and depression in urban and rural areas are discussed alongside data from studies looking at the effect that certain types of green space might have on mental health. While there is no exact consensus on the extent to which nature has positive effects on mental health there is enough of a correlation to argue for the implementation of public green spaces in urban design, in order …

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum: Prospects For An Ethical Theory Of Accountability, Melvin Dubnick
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum: Prospects For An Ethical Theory Of Accountability, Melvin Dubnick
Faculty Publications
This paper is intended to restate the case for the development of an "ethical theory of accountability" as an alternative to current theoretical frames being applied by students of accountable governance. I would emphasize the word "alternative" at this juncture, noting that an ethical theory should not be regarded as replacement for current models; rather it is offered as a reframing of accountability that can provide a significantly different perspective -- one rooted in (and built upon) ontologically distinct presuppositions about the nature of account-giving/receiving.
Central to the effort is establishing accountability as the capacity to engage in account-giving/receiving behavior …

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The Center for Economic Development (the Center) produced this economic impact report for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) to illustrate how their operations, infrastructure, and services contribute to Cuyahoga County’s economy. Cleveland is fortunate among the Midwestern metropolitan areas to have a rich transit history and infrastructure which is actively updated and shapes regional life. Among similar metro transit authorities in the region (Detroit, Cincinnati, and others), GCRTA was second only to Pittsburgh’s Port Authority of Allegheny County in terms of ridership and vehicle-revenue miles in 2017.
With 2,300 full-time employees in 2017, GCRTA is the 13th largest …

Neural insult during development results in recovery outcomes that vary dependent upon the system under investigation. Nerve regeneration does not occur if the rat gustatory chorda tympani nerve is sectioned (CTX) during neonatal (≤P10) development. It is unclear how chorda tympani soma and terminal fields are affected after neonatal CTX. The current study determined the impact of neonatal CTX on chorda tympani neurons and brainstem gustatory terminal fields. To assess terminal field volume in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), rats received CTX at P5 or P10 followed by chorda tympani label, or glossopharyngeal (GL) and greater superficial petrosal …
Pro-Development Dispute Resolution Mechanisms And Norms For Investment And Commercial Disputes In Asean, Man Yip
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The establishment of the AEC in December 2015 marked an important milestone in the acceleration of regional economic integration. In the next ten years, according to the AEC Blueprint 2025, an area of focus for ASEAN is the development and promotion of MSMEs. Transnational transactions within and with ASEAN will therefore continue to rise, which will undoubtedly lead to a concomitant increase in the volume as well as the complexity of disputes. This chapter explores the strategic development of innovative approaches to facilitate the resolution of investor-state and commercial disputes in ASEAN. It argues that the creation of new dispute …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Over the last years, many organizations have been working on infrastructure to facilitate sharing and reuse of research data. This means that researchers now have ways of making their data available, but not necessarily incentives to do so. Several Research Data Alliance (RDA) working groups have been working on ways to start measuring activities around research data to provide input for new Data Level Metrics (DLMs). These DLMs are a critical step towards providing researchers with credit for their work. In this paper, we describe the outcomes of the work of the Scholarly Link Exchange (Scholix) working group and the …

Accounting Education In Greece During The Gfc (2009-2016), Dimitrios V. Siskos
Publications
The structure of accounting education in Greece, and in the world, is facing nowadays many significant challenges since the global financial crisis has left behind many critical educational burdens. At the same time, there is an increase in accounting omissions and malpractices of ethics both in the public and in the private sector of Greece. These undoubtedly contributed to massive unemployment, high poverty rate, crime and other social ills experienced in the country. This motivated the study on restructuring accounting education by devising a new educational framework that can be applied to Greek universities and colleges with the purpose of …

Virginia Coastal Policy Center
More than half of the population of the continental United States resides in coastal communities, which are increasingly home to commercial shellfish aquaculture operations. Consequently, a variety of user conflicts can arise as states seek to encourage the development or expansion of shellfish aquaculture. Each of these conflicts creates the potential for opposition and legal challenges to the industry.
An understanding of the legal and regulatory context governing shellfish aquaculture can assist in managing conflicts related to the industry. Laws and regulations in some cases create or can be perceived as impediments to the growth or success of the aquaculture …

Background: There is much research examining adolescents' executive function (EF) but there is little information about tools that measure EF, in particular preference of use, their reliability and validity. This information is important as to help both researchers and practitioners select the most relevant and reliable measure of EF to use with adolescents in their context.
Aims: We conducted a scoping review to: (a) identify the measures of EF that have been used in studies conducted among adolescents in the past 15 years; (b) identify the most frequently used measures of EF; and (c) establish the psychometric robustness of existing …
