Is One Secure Attachment Enough? Infant Cortisol Reactivity And The Security Of Infant-Mother And Infant-Father Attachments At The End Of The First Year, Patty X. Kuo, Ekjyot K. Saini, Elizabeth Tengelitsch, Brenda L. Volling Mar 2019

Volling

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Attachment security is theorized to shape stress reactivity, but extant work has failed to find consistent links between attachment security to mothers and infant cortisol reactivity. We examined family configurations of infant-mother and infant-father attachment security in relation to infant cortisol reactivity. One-year old infants (N = 180) participated in the Strange Situation with mothers and fathers in two counterbalanced lab visits, one month apart (12 and 13 months). Infants with secure attachments only to their fathers and not their mothers had higher cortisol levels than infants with a secure attachment to mother and also exhibited a blunted cortisol response …

Going For Broke: A Talk To Music Teachers, Juliet Hess, Brent C. Talbot Mar 2019

Going For Broke: A Talk To Music Teachers, Juliet Hess, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

In 1963—a racially-charged time in the United States—James Baldwin delivered “A Talk to Teachers,” urging educators to engage youth in difficult conversations about current events. We concur with Giroux (2011, 2019) that political forces influence our educational spaces and that classrooms should not be viewed as apolitical, but instead seen as sites for engagement, where educators and artists alike can “go for broke.” Drawing upon A Tribe Called Quest’s 2017 Grammy performance of “We the People…” as an example of the role of the arts in troubled times, we consider ways to work alongside youth in schools to respond, consider, …

Fostering Hope: The Christian Healthcare Chaplain In A Caring Relationship, Felix O. Otuorimuo Mar 2019

Fostering Hope: The Christian Healthcare Chaplain In A Caring Relationship, Felix O. Otuorimuo

Masters Theses

In 2017, the data from suicide prevention resource center (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) showed an increasing rate of 10.6 million persons between the ages 18-65 that have had suicidal thoughts, a precipitating factor from hopelessness that triggers the goal of killing themselves. Given this challenge, the study seeks to understand how the Christian healthcare chaplain in a caring relationship, fosters biblical hope as spiritual care intervention to persons with suicidal thoughts to promote recovery, repair and restoration. The research was designed to use purposeful sampling to collect responses by anonymous online survey from 35 Christian healthcare chaplains …

Self-Efficacy In Information Security: A Mixed Methods Study Of Deaf End-Users, Kyle Murbach Mar 2019

Self-Efficacy In Information Security: A Mixed Methods Study Of Deaf End-Users, Kyle Murbach

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This explanatory sequential mixed methods study focuses on gaining an overall understanding of the potential variances in self-efficacy in information security and security practice behavior in the deaf population. Very little is understood about the deaf experience when engaging in security practices and their confidence levels in doing so. Due to the fastpaced nature of cyber security and its many facets, the human factor plays a crucial role in the success of cyber security. It is important to understand the potential implications of variances that may affect a deaf end-user’s security practice behavior to be able to provide more effective …

Emotional Silos: A Review Of Doctoral Candidates’ Isolating Experiences And The Role For Academic Librarians In Campus-Wide Support Networks, Carrie L. Forbes, Jennifer Bowers Mar 2019

Emotional Silos: A Review Of Doctoral Candidates’ Isolating Experiences And The Role For Academic Librarians In Campus-Wide Support Networks, Carrie L. Forbes, Jennifer Bowers

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Introduction. Much of the research about how academic librarians can better support doctoral students has focused on information behaviour and advanced research skills but has neglected affective factors. An exploratory review of research literature on isolation and doctoral students suggests that feelings of isolation can have negative consequences for students’ progress on the dissertation. The review identifies themes, areas of support, and suggestions for future research.
Method. Library and information science, psychology, education, and interdisciplinary databases were searched for papers addressing issues of isolation experienced by United States doctoral students during the dissertation phase.
Analysis. Thematic analysis …

Kosova Nën Administrimin Ndërkombëtar Dhe Levizjet Drejt Statusit Final, Vanesa Kabashi Mar 2019

Kosova Nën Administrimin Ndërkombëtar Dhe Levizjet Drejt Statusit Final, Vanesa Kabashi

Theses and Dissertations

Producer Services: A Hub For Stem And An Engine For Job Growth, Eric Thompson, Uyen Tran Mar 2019

Producer Services: A Hub For Stem And An Engine For Job Growth, Eric Thompson, Uyen Tran

Business in Nebraska

The producer services sector, which includes professional and technical services such as accounting, engineering, computer programming, advertising and consulting, is the fastest growing, high-wage segment of the U.S. economy. Producer services employment grew by 15 percent nationwide from 2008 through 2017 but only by 5 percent in Nebraska. Nebraska growth lagged the nation in part because the state has smaller metropolitan areas. Producer service businesses tend to congregate in larger cities. To grasp more opportunities in this growing, high wage sector, Nebraska needs to train more workers in STEM occupations, encourage the development of small businesses in the sector, and …

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring At Scotts Bluff National Monument, 2018 Data Report, Isabel W. Ashton

United States National Park Service: Publications

Abstract

This report presents the results of vegetation monitoring efforts in 2018 at Scotts Bluff National Monument (SCBL) by the Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN) and Fire Ecology Program (NGPFire). This was the eighth year of combined monitoring efforts.

Crew members from NGPN visited eight long-term monitoring plots to collect data on the plant communities at SCBL. This work is part of a long-term monitoring effort designed to provide a better understanding of the condition of the vegetation community and how it changes over time. NGPN staff measured species richness, herb-layer height, native and non-native species abundance, …

Why Being Bored Might Not Be A Bad Thing After All, Guihyun Park, Beng-Chong Lim, Hui Si Oh Mar 2019

Why Being Bored Might Not Be A Bad Thing After All, Guihyun Park, Beng-Chong Lim, Hui Si Oh

Student Publications

Boredom is likely one of the most prevalent, yet least understood, emotions. It is easy to find examples of how boredom can engender other negative emotional states that often lead to somewhat negative—albeit unintended—outcomes (e.g., risky or delinquent behaviors). But does boredom invariably lead to negative consequences? Could being bored also have less obvious effects, such as increased creativity? We explore the consequences of being bored using three experimental studies that manipulate boredom and identify the benefits for creativity of being bored. In Study 1, we found that boredom helped boost individual productivity on an idea-generation task. In Study 2, …

Is Mexican Migration To The United States An Issue Of Economic Inequality?, Rene Zenteno Mar 2019

Is Mexican Migration To The United States An Issue Of Economic Inequality?, Rene Zenteno

Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research

This document presents an analytical overview of the following three questions: how does inequality affect migration? how much do we know about this link, particularly for the case of migration from Mexico to the United States? and can public policy play a role towards decreasing incentives to move north through inequality alleviation in Mexico? The first section includes a brief discussion of past and recent patterns in Mexican migration to the United States. Since inequality has been mainly addressed as an economic issue in the study of migration, the second part of the paper provides a general examination of different …

Perceptions About Sexual Offenses: Misconceptions, Punitiveness, And Public Sentiment, Laura L. King Mar 2019

Perceptions About Sexual Offenses: Misconceptions, Punitiveness, And Public Sentiment, Laura L. King

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Decades of research on public opinion about crime reveal varying, yet relatively punitive attitudes that are often riddled with misconceptions. Sparked by the increased media and legislative attention devoted to sex offenders beginning in the 1990s, researchers began to more closely examine public opinion about sexual offenses. Findings suggest the public adheres to several misconceptions about sexual offenses and supports harsh sanctions for offenders. However, further research is warranted to more closely examine the relationships among these variables. Thus, the goal of the present study was to survey Pennsylvania residents to examine the degree to which misconceptions about sexual offenses …

The Economics Of Social Data: An Introduction, Dirk Bergemann, Alessandro Bonatti Mar 2019

The Economics Of Social Data: An Introduction, Dirk Bergemann, Alessandro Bonatti

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Large internet platforms collect data from individual users in almost every interaction on the internet. Whenever an individual browses a news website, searches for a medical term or for a travel recommendation, or simply checks the weather forecast on an app, that individual generates data. A central feature of the data collected from the individuals is its social aspect. Namely, the data captured from an individual user is not only informative about this specific individual, but also about users in some metric similar to the individual. Thus, the individual data is really social data. The social nature of the data …

How Children Talk About Events: Implications For Eliciting And Analyzing Eyewitness Reports, Sonja P. Brubacher, Carole Peterson, David La Rooy, Jason Dickinson, Debra Ann Poole Mar 2019

How Children Talk About Events: Implications For Eliciting And Analyzing Eyewitness Reports, Sonja P. Brubacher, Carole Peterson, David La Rooy, Jason Dickinson, Debra Ann Poole

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Legal and social service professionals often question whether various features of young witnesses’ responses during interviews are characteristic of children's event reports or whether these features are concerning findings that reflect degraded memory, outside influence, or other phenomena. To assist helping professionals and researchers who collect data through interviews, we aggregated findings from child eyewitness studies and revisited transcript sets to construct fifteen principles that capture how children talk about events. These principles address children's earliest event narratives, how children report information as interviews unfold and typical features of their narratives, threats to the accuracy of answers, the influence of …

Extraordinary Acts To “Show Up”: Conceptualizing Resilience Of Lgbtq Youth, Kenta Asakura Mar 2019

Extraordinary Acts To “Show Up”: Conceptualizing Resilience Of Lgbtq Youth, Kenta Asakura

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Sexual and gender diversity is an overlooked subject in resilience research. This study seeks to advance the conceptualization of resilience among lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. Informed by social ecological theory of resilience, grounded theory analysis of interviews with service providers (n = 16) and LGBTQ youth (n = 19) yielded the following categories: (a) facing adversities across contexts, and (b) “doing well” while still in pain. LGBTQ youth face both general and LGBTQ-specific adversities. LGBTQ youth, even in a so-called “post-gay” era, remain challenged to navigate marginalization to maintain their well-being. Participants endorsed a context-dependent understanding …

A Systematic Review Of Interventions For Implementation Fidelity For Academic Interventions, Emily Morgan Beecher

Theses and Dissertations

To address students’ academic and behavioral needs, schools are held accountable for implementing effective evidence–based interventions. An important relationship exists between implementation fidelity and the effectiveness of interventions. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and evaluate the evidence of interventions to improve the implementation fidelity of academic interventions and to evaluate the quality of the existing research with a focus on the quality of the research on the most successful interventions. A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. Each study was coded based on a quality of evidence coding protocol and the findings were then …
