Opening Up Open Access Institutional Repositories To Demonstrate Value: Two Universities’ Pilots On Including Metadata-Only Records, Karen Bjork, Rebel Cummings-Sauls, Ryan Otto
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Introduction: Institutional repository managers are continuously looking for new ways to demonstrate the value of their repositories. One way to do this is to create a more inclusive repository that provides reliable information about the research output produced by faculty affiliated with the institution.
Description of Program: This article details two pilot projects that evaluated how their repositories could track faculty research output through the inclusion of metadata-only (no full-text) records. The purpose of each pilot project was to determine the feasibility and provide an assessment of the long-term impact on the repository’s mission statement, staffing, and collection development policies. …

The subject librarian for Louisiana State University’s School of Library & Information Science designed a short survey that included open-ended questions to explore the self-efficacy of graduating MLIS students. The librarian asked a graduating MLIS student to participate in the study as a co-investigator. The survey results were imported into Dedoose, a web-based application, which allowed the co-investigators to collaborate at a distance for qualitative coding and analysis. Although teams of researchers often create the initial codebook collaboratively, the co-investigators in this study each created individual codebooks using inductive coding, which draws themes from data. After the co-investigators completed their …
Art Therapists’ Perceptions Of What Happens When They Create Art Alongside Their Clients In The Practice Of Group Therapy, Laura Teoli
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Although case studies and personal accounts since the founding of the art therapy field discussed creating art alongside clients as a valuable practice, few systematic studies have explored this method. This collaborative art-based dissertation explored art therapists’ perceptions of two research questions: (1) What happens when art therapists create art alongside their clients in their group art therapy practices? and (2) What is gained and what is lost when they engage in this practice? Four group art therapists (3 females, 1 male) with 5 to 31 (median 8.5) years of experience contributed as co-researchers. They participated in 6 hours of …

Public Transportation And New Mobility, Chris Pangilinan
Public Transportation And New Mobility, Chris Pangilinan
PSU Transportation Seminars
New mobility options such as bike share, scooters, and transportation network companies (e.g. Uber) are proliferating across the United States and beyond. Early research has shown that while the private automobile continues to be the main competition for transit, new mobility options may also be siphoning off some riders. In this seminar, we will explore what the role of public transportation should be in this era of rapidly expanding private transportation options. We will also examine how private transportation could be harnessed to help public transportation succeed and allow for cities to meet their mobility goals.

Leveraging Visual Literacy To Engage And Orient First-Year College Students In The Library, Melissa Clark
Librarian and Staff Presentations
Too often incoming students leave library orientation sessions feeling overwhelmed and overstressed, which results in the library becoming one more intimidating obstacle to them. However, this does not need to be the case. Visual literacy and visual culture can be leveraged to engage students and improve library orientation sessions.

The Importance Of Open Access, Jennifer Thomson
Bucknell: Occupied
Jennifer Thomson, assistant professor of History at Bucknell University, interviews Jill Hallam-Miller, Dan Heuer, and Tammy Troup, Bucknell librarians, Scholarly Communications committee members, and Open Access advocates. The group contrasts the current closed model of scholarly publishing with the aims of Open Access. The discussion revolves around specific cases, describes the use of Open Educational Resources on college campuses, and includes comments about the recent decision by the University of California library to boycott Elsevier. The conversation concludes with a discussion about Open Access as a value at Bucknell University.

On The Conditional And Unconditional Type I Error Rates And Power Of Tests In Linear Models With Heteroscedastic Errors, Patrick J. Rosopa, Alice M. Brawley, Theresa P. Atkinson, Stephen A. Robertson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Preliminary tests for homoscedasticity may be unnecessary in general linear models. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, results suggest that when testing for differences between independent slopes, the unconditional use of weighted least squares regression and HC4 regression performed the best across a wide range of conditions.

Data Snapshot: Hispanic Population Of Child-Bearing Age Grows, But Births Diminish, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
The U.S. population grew by just 0.62 percent last year, the smallest rate of increase in eighty years. Future growth now depends on minority population gains, because the white population is no longer growing. Hispanics are the largest minority group and now account for the majority of U.S. population gain.

Φ-Divergence Loss-Based Artificial Neural Network, R. L. Salamwade, D. M. Sakate, S. K. Mathur
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can fit non-linear functions and recognize patterns better than several standard techniques. Performance of ANNs is measured by using loss functions. Phi-divergence estimator is generalization of maximum likelihood estimator and it possesses all its properties. A neural network is proposed which is trained using phi-divergence loss.
Using Class Pass Intervention (Cpi) To Decrease Disruptive Behavior In Children, Andrea N. Zuniga
Using Class Pass Intervention (Cpi) To Decrease Disruptive Behavior In Children, Andrea N. Zuniga
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Finding of previous research has shown that disruptive behavior can impair students’ academic success (Pierce, Reid, & Epstein, 2004), as well as increase teacher’s stress level (Westling, 2010). Class Pass Intervention (CPI) is a Tier 2 intervention designed to decrease disruptive behavior and increase academic engagement, however, thus far research on the effects of CPI has been limited to typically developing elementary and high school students with escape and attention-maintained problem behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to replicate and extend previous research on the effects of CPI on problem behavior and academic engagement however with students whose …

Women’S Orgasm Gap As A Function Of Precarious Manhood, Jessica A. Jordan
Women’S Orgasm Gap As A Function Of Precarious Manhood, Jessica A. Jordan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The disparity in frequency of orgasms between men and heterosexual women has been linked qualitatively to women purposefully not communicating their sexual needs in order to preserve their partner’s masculinity. In two studies I experimentally evaluated this relationship, sampling heterosexual undergraduate women. In study 1 (N = 246) I demonstrated that women who imagined not having an orgasm rated an imaginary partner as more insecure in his manhood, relative to women who imagined having an orgasm or going on a dinner date. These perceptions of insecurity mediated the relationship between not having an orgasm and reporting anxiety about hurting their …
Making Sense At The Margins: Describing Narratives On Food Insecurity Through Hip-Hop, Lemuel Scott
Making Sense At The Margins: Describing Narratives On Food Insecurity Through Hip-Hop, Lemuel Scott
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neoliberalism is the contemporary political and economic thought that promotes ideas of private property, individualism, and market logic as key to advancing humanity. Scholars generally link neoliberalism to poverty from a broad perspective, but few have explored how it specifically impacts food insecurity. Globally, many people impacted by poverty also experience food insecurity. Hip-hop is important to resistance and fostering my critical worldview. Existing literature primarily describes hip-hop as a critical tool giving expression to people living at the margins. However, there is a need for hip-hop to be used more often as resistance by artists doing research. First, this …
