Positive Aspects Of Parenting A Deaf Child: Categories Of Potential Positive Influences, Amy Szarkowski, Patrick Brice

Hearing parents were interviewed regarding the positive aspects of parenting their deaf children. The parent/child dyads were also observed in interactions and parents were asked to record in a journal their reflections about parenting a deaf child. This information was organized into categories that influenced the degree to which parents reported having positive experiences. A total of 42 categories were derived from the data obtained in the interviews, which were further arranged by the researchers in to relevant clusters. The clusters allow readers to better conceptualize the influences on parents that impact their ability to have a positive parenting experience. …

Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Video-Mediated Communication With Deaf Individuals: Implications For Telepsychotherapy, Michael John Gournaris, Irene W. Leigh

Telecommunications and videoconference systems are increasingly replacing face-to-face communication (F2F). Video-mediated communication (VMC) offers the benefit of virtual F2F communication over long distances. The purpose of this study was to compare communication performance and perceptions for deaf individuals in F2F and VMC situations using a Map Task. Deaf participants were instructed by a deaf instructor using American Sign Language to mark routes. There were no significant differences in the length of sessions, almost all communication breakdown events, map task deviations, and overall outcomes. The results suggest that effective communication can occur in VMC situations. Research is needed to gauge the …

Treating deaf children with severe emotional and behavior problems, especially in residential and alternative school treatment settings, is a demanding undertaking. Finding and retaining skilled mental health paraprofessionals are continual challenges faced by mental health service providers. These challenges are even greater when the children served are deaf, and when staff members are expected to be multilingual, be knowledgeable about deaf culture, and be able to treat children with a multitude of severe mental health disturbances. In this article I use a discursive approach and the concept of the ‘category entitlement’ to analyse the ways that contributors to a public Internet discussion of the value of the public library make cases for different user characteristics and behaviour as ‘worthy’ or ‘problematic’, and use these characteristics to discuss and debate the kinds of individuals and the kinds of behaviour that properly belong to each category. Integrated Perspective Of Low Self-Control And Lifestyle-Exposure: Gender Differences In Victimization Risk Among South Korean Youth, Hyounggon Kwak

This dissertation examined the link between low self-control, risky lifestyles, and victimization, using data from 1,057 South Korean adolescents included in the Study on Childhood Delinquency. Specifically, this study explores a full mediation model to test whether risky lifestyles (unstructured activity, association with deviant peers, and delinquency) account for the effect of low self-control on victimization. The results indicated that low self-control only had an indirect effect on victimization primarily through unstructured time and one’s own delinquency. A Longitudinal Examination Of African American Adolescent Females Detained For Status Offense, Dexter R. Voisin

Introduction: Behaviors like truancy, running away, curfew violation, and alcohol possession fall under the status offense category and can have serious consequences for adolescents. The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency and Prevention Act prohibited detaining status offenders. We explored the degree to which African American adolescent girls were being detained for status offenses and the connections to their behavioral health risks and re-confinement. Methods: 188 African American girls (aged 13–17), recruited from detention facilities, were surveyed at baseline and 3-month follow-ups. Logistic regression models estimated the likelihood of longitudinal re-confinement, controlling for sexual and behavioral health risk factors. Results: One third …

Over eleven hundred libraries across the United States and its territories participate in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) by providing public access to free government resources. In the last decade, there has been a significant shift as many government publications are being published only electronically. At the same time, several older physical collections are being digitized and made available online. This shift has caused many FDLP libraries to weed their older physical government document collections and increase their electronic holdings.

This study used webometric analysis to assess the most successful strategies for engaging Instagram users in academic special collections. Data were collected from five academic special collections Instagram accounts to analyze their activity during the month of April 2018. Data considered in the study include average number of likes per post, average number of hashtags per post, and most common hashtags and content. The results of this analysis may serve as a recommendation for best practices for academic special collections interested in, or already using Instagram as a platform, to engage students and other Instagram users in their collections.
