Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.

Familiarity With Homosexuality “Changes Hearts”: What Lay Members And Former Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Think About Lgbp Issues, John Garbero

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Recently, the United States has become increasingly accepting of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals and their relationships. However, some conservative religions are hesitant or even unwilling to condone or to accept non-traditional lifestyles in their congregations. One such religious institution is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (from here on known as the LDS Church, the Mormon Church, or the Church). A recent body of research has attempted to gain a general understanding of these religious groups and their teachings regrading homosexuality. While these contributions are significant, a more detailed understanding regarding the views of lay members of …

Social Context Modulates Tolerance For Pragmatic Violations In Binary But Not Graded Judgments, L. Sikos, M. Kim, Daniel J. Grodner Mar 2019

Social Context Modulates Tolerance For Pragmatic Violations In Binary But Not Graded Judgments, L. Sikos, M. Kim, Daniel J. Grodner

Psychology Faculty Works

A common method for investigating pragmatic processing and its development in children is to have participants make binary judgments of underinformative (UI) statements such as Some elephants are mammals. Rejection of such statements indicates that a (not-all) scalar implicature has been computed. Acceptance of UI statements is typically taken as evidence that the perceiver has not computed an implicature. Under this assumption, the results of binary judgment studies in children and adults suggest that computing an implicature may be cognitively costly. For instance, children under 7 years of age are systematically more likely to accept UI statements compared to adults. …

Citation Management Tools, Undergraduate Research Practices, And The Myth Of The Digital Native, Julia Glauberman Mar 2019

Citation Management Tools, Undergraduate Research Practices, And The Myth Of The Digital Native, Julia Glauberman

Library Scholarship

In an ideal world, citation management tools save researchers time by keeping content organized and automating rote tasks, a feat made possible by technological progress and a common set of workflows and habits of mind shared by all researchers. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. Instead, we live in a world where citation management tools are prone to error, and a wide gulf separates the practices of novice researchers from those of expert researchers. Promoting citation management tools uncritically, without considering how they fit into students’ research processes, may undermine librarians’ ability to effectively help students. This problem …

Global Capital And The Cross-Section Of International Equity Return Comovement, Thummim Cho, Argyris Tsiaras Mar 2019

Global Capital And The Cross-Section Of International Equity Return Comovement, Thummim Cho, Argyris Tsiaras

Economics: Faculty Publications

What makes a country’s stock market more correlated with the U.S. stock market than others? This paper documents and investigates theoretically a strong positive cross-sectional relationship between the share of an equity market held by foreign investors, U.S. investors in particular, and the return correlations of 40 equity markets with the U.S. market. We argue that frictions impeding the cross-border holding of equity are key determinants of cross-border positions and equity market return correlations across countries. We develop an asset pricing model that illustrates how heterogeneity in cross-border asset holding costs can generate the observed cross-sections of cross-border positions, return …

Evaluating Small-Scale Simulation Training For Teaching Firearm Safety To Children With Asd, Margaret E. Orner Mar 2019

Evaluating Small-Scale Simulation Training For Teaching Firearm Safety To Children With Asd, Margaret E. Orner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Every year children are unintentionally injured or killed due to finding an unattended firearm. Although research evaluating various approaches to teach safety skills shows that behavioral skills training and in situ training are effective, limited research exists evaluating small-scale simulation training in teaching safety skills to children. Furthermore, there is no research evaluating this approach with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study evaluated the effectiveness of small-scale simulation training in teaching firearm safety to 5- to 6-year-old children with ASD. Simulation training was effective for one participant and in situ training was necessary for one participant. However, in …

How Do Changing Financial Circumstances Relate To Financial Well-Being? Evidence From A National Survey, Sam Bufe, Sicong Sun, Stephen P. Roll, Olga Kondratjeva, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Social Policy Institute Research

This brief is the third and final brief in a series exploring the financial well-being of low- and moderate-income (LMI) households in the United States. The first brief in this series explored how financial well-being differed between LMI households and the general population.1 The second in the series examined how financial well-being changed over time in a sample of LMI respondents.2 This brief uses longitudinal survey data paired with administrative tax data to assess how different household experiences—including the use of alternative financial services, the experience of material and medical hardship, and improvements in physical and financial health—correspond …

Social Constructionism And Cultivation Theory In Development Of The Juvenile “Super-Predator”, Elizabeth R. Jackson-Cruz Mar 2019

Social Constructionism And Cultivation Theory In Development Of The Juvenile “Super-Predator”, Elizabeth R. Jackson-Cruz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The myth of the “super-predator” offender was adopted by newspaper media in the mid-1990s characterizing “violent”, urban, and minority juvenile offenders. The phrase originated from newspaper headlines of the 1980s and 1990s, but limited research has identified whether this con-struct predated DiIulio and Fox’s crime surge prediction. This study sampled juvenile crime news items from The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times (N=2,008) 1985-1995 with defined search criteria of juvenile actors, “violent” juvenile crime, and/or juvenile drug crime. A descriptive analysis of the data determined reporting trends sought for a “period effect” caused by the …

Pertenæcer: Eight-Week Mindfulness And Meditation Training And Practices For Latinx Immigrants In The United States., Criss Cuervo

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This paper argues the need for culturally-attuned mindfulness- and meditation-based programs designed to help Latinx immigrants facing acculturative stress in the United States. There are over 43.7 million immigrants living in the U.S (Pew Research Center, 2018); even though research does not show how many are suffering from acculturative stress, research does show that discrimination has been strongly linked to negative psychological consequences and acculturative stress (Torres, Driscoll, and Voell, 2012, p. 18). Research on discrimination from Perez, Fortuna, and Alegria and the Pew Hispanic Center (as cited in Torres, Driscoll, and Voell, 2012) share that on average 30 percent …

It appears that the explosive hazard was a small IED concealed or wrapped in plastic (which is common with IEDs). The only recorded injury was a severe foot injury that resulted in surgical amputation, from which it is reasonable to infer that the Victim stepped on a pressure initiated explosive device that he had missed during his search.

Market Impacts Of A Meat Tax, Regan Gilmore, Azzeddine Azzam Mar 2019

Market Impacts Of A Meat Tax, Regan Gilmore, Azzeddine Azzam

Cornhusker Economics

Over time, animal activists and environmentalists have made calls to put a tax on meat. What effect would that have? To find out, we estimated the impacts that a retail-level greenhouse gas (GHG) tax on meat would have on livestock and grain markets.

The research used a multi-market economic model that integrates the beef, pork, and poultry markets with the corn, distillers' grain, soybean, soymeal, and ethanol markets. For GHG taxes, we used those provided by Springman et al. based on a emission price (social cost) of $52 per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent estimated by EPA. Emissions by …

Assessing The Short-Term Stability Of Financial Well-Being In Low- To Moderate-Income Households, Sicong Sun, Stephen P. Roll, Olga Kondratjeva, Sam Bufe, Michal Grinstein-Weiss Mar 2019

Assessing The Short-Term Stability Of Financial Well-Being In Low- To Moderate-Income Households, Sicong Sun, Stephen P. Roll, Olga Kondratjeva, Sam Bufe, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Social Policy Institute Research

A growing body of research demonstrates that U.S. households experience a high degree of volatility in their finances. This volatility can take the form of large swings in month-to-month income, spells of unemployment, and incurring unexpected expenses.1 Beyond being difficult to predict, these income and expense shocks are costly as well, with one survey finding that the most expensive shock experienced by the median U.S. household cost roughly half of one month’s income.2This financial volatility disproportionately affects low- to moderate-income (LMI) households;3 a population that often lacks the resources to manage this volatility. For example, research from the Survey of …
