Important Factors In Midwestern Public Librarians’ Views On Intellectual Freedom And Collection Development: Part 2, Shannon M. Oltmann

Information Science Faculty Publications

This research examined the beliefs and actions of US midwestern librarians concerning intellectual freedom and collection development. The results are presented in two complementary articles; the first article provided some background and the results pertaining to intellectual freedom, whereas the second article focuses on the results for collection development questions and concludes with a broader discussion. While the first article focused on intellectual freedom beliefs, the second focuses more on actions that are thought to be influenced by those beliefs. The data were obtained through a survey with a 21.37% response rate. In general, respondents—particularly those with master of library …

The Role Of Early Maladaptive Schemas In The Development Of Depression, Anxiety And Academic Burnout, Caroline Gloria D’Souza Apr 2019

The Role Of Early Maladaptive Schemas In The Development Of Depression, Anxiety And Academic Burnout, Caroline Gloria D’Souza

Psychology Theses

While a number of studies have focused on the morbidity of psychiatric populations, little research has sought to understand the role of stress and psychological health of young people. In the United Arab Emirates, the conceptualization of mental health is still developing. Personal factors resulting from unmet childhood needs that, in turn, affect the extent to which individuals experience elevated levels of stress, burnout and mental health concerns in later life may be a worthwhile avenue to explore. The present study aimed to explore the contribution of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS), derived from the Schema Therapy Model, in the later …

Evaluating The Effect Of Exposure To Challenging Fat Talk Scenarios On Body Disparaging Conversations, Wafa Jamilur Rehman Apr 2019

Evaluating The Effect Of Exposure To Challenging Fat Talk Scenarios On Body Disparaging Conversations, Wafa Jamilur Rehman

Psychology Theses

Disparaging conversations about body shape and weight has become increasingly common among peers. Fat-talk engagement and its predictors are still unclear. The study examined women’s reactions to fat-talk versus feminist-theory inspired challenging fat-talk scenarios via experimental vignettes. Ninety-two undergraduate female students from United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) completed baseline questionnaires that assessed their levels of body dissatisfaction (Eating Disorder Inventory-2- Body Dissatisfaction subscale), fat talk engagement (Negative Body Talk Scale) and mood (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule). One week later, they were randomized to view one of the two scenarios, followed by assessment of their fat talk engagement (Negative Body …

Wages, Experience And Training Of Women, Richard Blundell, Monica Costa Dias, David Goll, Costas Meghir Apr 2019

Wages, Experience And Training Of Women, Richard Blundell, Monica Costa Dias, David Goll, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We investigate the role of training in reducing the gender wage gap using the UK- BHPS which contains detailed records of training. Using policy changes over an 18 year period we identify the impact of training and work experience on wages, earnings and employment. Based on a lifecycle model and using reforms as a source of exogenous variation we evaluate the role of formal training and experience in defining the evolution of wages and employment careers, conditional on education. Training is potentially important in compensating for the effects of children, especially for women who left education after completing high school.

Library Scholarship

During this presentation, we will describe some projects we have been working on: 1. Alma/Rosetta Integration: We are migrating to Alma along with 64 other SUNY campuses in July 2019. As part of this migration, we are planning to integrate Rosetta with Alma. We will discuss our progress with this project and any challenges we encountered. 2. Kitodo/Rosetta Integration: Kitodo is software designed to control and monitor all stages of digitization projects. It is primarily used by German Libraries and has not yet been installed in the US. We are hoping to set up Kitodo so that we can improve …

Wages, Experience And Training Of Women Over The Lifecycle, Richard Blundell, Monica Costa Dias, David Goll, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We investigate the role of training in reducing the gender wage gap using the UK-BHPS. Based on a lifecycle model and using tax and welfare bene t reforms as a source of exogenous variation we evaluate the role of formal training and experience in defining the evolution of wages and employment careers, conditional on education. Training is potentially important in compensating for the effects of children, especially for women who left education after completing high school, but does not fundamentally change the wage gap resulting from labor market interruptions following child birth.

Pretrial Publicity And Juror Decisionmaking: Effects Of Inadmissible Evidence And Coverage Of Its Exclusion From Trial, Rebecca Rhein Apr 2019

Pretrial Publicity And Juror Decisionmaking: Effects Of Inadmissible Evidence And Coverage Of Its Exclusion From Trial, Rebecca Rhein

Honors Theses

The courts have long been concerned that exposure to media coverage regarding a case making its way through the judicial process (i.e., pretrial publicity [PTP]) may influence jurors’ decisionmaking in court. Indeed, empirical research over the past two decades has shown that PTP can influence juror decisions. PTP often contains descriptions of evidence or factors that are ultimately deemed inadmissible at trial (e.g., confession evidence), but no research to date has examined what occurs when confessions are reported to the public but later deemed inadmissible. We examined these issues using a 2 (Interrogation Quality: High vs. Low) x3 (Exclusion: Technicality …

Exposure To Suicidal Behavior Predicts A Suicide Attempt, Depending On Past Psychiatric Diagnosis, Emily A. Kline Apr 2019

Exposure To Suicidal Behavior Predicts A Suicide Attempt, Depending On Past Psychiatric Diagnosis, Emily A. Kline

Theses and Dissertations

We hypothesized that adolescents with a psychiatric diagnosis that were exposed to a suicide attempt and/or suicide death are at risk for future suicide attempts. Exposure to suicidal behavior did not predict future suicide attempts, however the interaction between having a psychiatric diagnosis and exposure significantly predicted future suicide attempts.

Telecommunications Regulation In The Uae: The Interconnectedness Of Better Governance And Regulatory Performance, Mahra Abdullah Ali Alghawi Apr 2019

Telecommunications Regulation In The Uae: The Interconnectedness Of Better Governance And Regulatory Performance, Mahra Abdullah Ali Alghawi

Political Science Theses

This research focuses on the Telecommunications Regulation in the UAE and studies the interrelationship of ‘better public governance’ and ‘performance’ of telecommunications regulation in the UAE. The work is a reexamination of the thesis that “Countries with better (governance) institutions have better telecom regulators”, and, “Private regulated firms achieve the same public interest goals as state-owned firms”. The study analyzes public governance in the UAE using six internationally recognized criteria: ‘voice accountability’, ‘political stability’, ‘government effectiveness’, ‘regulatory quality’, ‘rule of law’ and ‘control of corruption’. It analyzes the quality of regulatory governance by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the …

Toward Inclusive Description: Reparations Through Community-Driven Metadata, Jillian M. Ewalt Apr 2019

Toward Inclusive Description: Reparations Through Community-Driven Metadata, Jillian M. Ewalt

Marian Library Faculty Publications

This case study covers the process and policies involved in creating accurate and inclusive metadata for a historically marginalized community. The Japanese American Digitization Project was a consortial, collaborative digitization project with the goal of unifying and providing online access to tens of thousands of archival materials documenting the Japanese American experience. Traditionally, the Japanese American experience, particularly the internment during World War II, has been laden with euphemistic language. This article outlines community-driven metadata development, implementing an inclusive controlled vocabulary, and thinking about archival metadata as a process that can contribute to reparations.

Social Egalitarianism: How Does Marginalization Affect An Individual’S Support For Welfare Recipients?, Brodie W. Edgerton Apr 2019

Social Egalitarianism: How Does Marginalization Affect An Individual’S Support For Welfare Recipients?, Brodie W. Edgerton

Student Publications

This work examines how identification in a historically marginalized group in the United States affects individuals' opinions towards welfare recipients. Using three marginalized groups: African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, and Women, this study compares how each group views welfare recipients while discussing how people in general view welfare recipients. This study finds that there are some statistical differences between the opinions of welfare recipients between certain groups, but not amongst other groups, indicating the importance of society on American politics in the present day.

Refugee Resettlement And Integration In Germany: Analysis Of Media Discourse, Dylan T. O'Neil Apr 2019

Refugee Resettlement And Integration In Germany: Analysis Of Media Discourse, Dylan T. O'Neil

Student Publications

Refugees are among the most discussed and debated topics worldwide; the massive movement of refugees and asylum seekers facing the world today is the largest since the end of the second world war. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates the total number of refugees in the world to be almost twenty-six million people, while asylum seekers account for around three million. The concept of a refugee is formally defined by the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees, which creates a legal status, and states that a refugee is a person who “faces well-founded fear of being …

The “F” Word?: An Analysis Of The State Of Feminism In The United States Today, Marisa E. Balanda Apr 2019

The “F” Word?: An Analysis Of The State Of Feminism In The United States Today, Marisa E. Balanda

Student Publications

Feminism is the attempt to reduce or eliminate patriarchy, or male rule by birthright. While this struggle for gender equality may seem straightforward, there are different “strains” of feminism that advocate different approaches to achieving feminist goals. The prevailing literature surrounding the state of modern feminism is vast —- often varying by the author’s political values, age relative to the early women’s rights movements, and beliefs about whether or not sex-based equality has been achieved. This paper, developed primarily from scholarly literature about modern feminism, will integrate findings from interviews with six women (three who are current students at Gettysburg …

Emory University’S Changing Atlanta Exhibit: Documenting Local History Through Archives, W. Michael Camp

Georgia Library Quarterly

This article discusses the Changing Atlanta exhibit recently on display at Emory University to demonstrate how exhibits can spur greater public engagement with archives and archival materials. The exhibit used archival collections to illuminate the stories of individuals and groups who participated in the city of Atlanta’s expansion in the second half of the twentieth century. This article discusses the historical content of the exhibit itself alongside the opportunities for outreach generated by the exhibit.
