Hold-To-Light And Other Specialty Postcards, Zoe Orcutt
Hold-To-Light And Other Specialty Postcards, Zoe Orcutt
Student Projects from the Archives
The "Hold-to-Light" binder in the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection deals primarily with cards that contain some type of visual effect when viewed. The majority of the cards’ visual effects can be viewed when held up a light. For this, they are usually called HTL (hold-to-light) cards, or transparency cards. There were three specific processes used in printing these HTL Cards: Die-cutting, Transparency, and Slide-Transparency.

M. Storey-Bates Cards, Stacy Young, Emma Grosjean
Student Projects from the Archives
The M. Storey-Bates postcard binder in the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection includes 132 postcards that date from 1904-1918 and that feature a multitude of images. These images consist of photographs of Edwardian actors and actresses, cartoon illustrations, illustrations created from Dickens, paintings, and much more. All of the postcards that are included in the binder have been mailed to addresses in the United Kingdom, most certainly from other addresses in the UK. The majority of these postcards were mailed to Minnie Storey-Bates (1887-1959) from Ralph Duckworth (1885-1960). Their personal relationship included correspondence that consisted of mundane daily activities, check-ins, …

“None But The Brave Deserve The Fair?” An Analysis Of Lovers Postcards From The First World War, Randall Slonaker
“None But The Brave Deserve The Fair?” An Analysis Of Lovers Postcards From The First World War, Randall Slonaker
Student Projects from the Archives
Over ten percent of postcards in the Lovers Portraits Vol. 1 binder feature couples where the man is wearing a military uniform, with twenty-two of these cards depicting men in World War I era, United States military garb. The images and captions featured on these cards evoke familiar ideas of romance, courtship, and marital fidelity. Therefore, I have chosen to write a short synopsis that groups all of the World War One themed cards in this binder in one of three categories: courtship and pursuit, domesticity and marriage, and marital commitment and fidelity. I have positioned the images and captions …

“Feminists Leap Year Vol. 2:” The Portrayals Of Gender In Early 20th Century Postcards, Anthony Pankuch, Jessica Wilson
Student Projects from the Archives
The “Feminists Leap Year Vol. 2” binder of the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection contains postcards reflecting women in empowered, vulnerable, pitiful, and satirical situations. They appear in scenes of public activism, romance, and the once-mythologized American frontier. The postcards arranged by Dr. Campbell under the banner of “Feminist” reflect the stereotypes, themes, and gendered images that have remained attached to the feminist movement from its emergence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to its incarnation in the twenty-first century. Postcard images demonstrate the intersectionality of gender and feminism by juxtaposing postcards satirizing women as masculine or domestically …

Student Projects from the Archives
This examination of representative postcards from the Lovers Portrait Vol. 1 volume in the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection will use the postcards dating from the early twentieth century and the messages on them to illuminate facts about postcard production, postal history, family relationships, daily life, fashion strictures, and much more. With each card inspiring a piece of detective work that brings to light a nugget of information about a time gone by, this work also generally represents the kind of curiosities that the collection as a whole brings to light. It is hoped that it will serve as a …
Intentional Teaching In Kindergarten: Combining Academic Instruction And Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Amy Borkowski
Intentional Teaching In Kindergarten: Combining Academic Instruction And Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Amy Borkowski
Celebration of Research
This literature review explores the perceived dichotomy in kindergarten between child-centered, developmentally appropriate practices and teacher-directed, academic instruction. Long-held beliefs about child development have dominated the field of early childhood education for well over a century, but new research, legislative mandates, and academic standards have dramatically changed the landscape of education in the kindergarten year. Literature from scholarly journals and academic texts will be examined, revealing how kindergarten has changed over time, the impact that various factors have had on driving that change, and what educators should consider as they strive to provide intentional instruction in kindergarten.
Impact Of Athletics On Academic Performance At Nwc, Matthew Scott, Brant Vermeer
Impact Of Athletics On Academic Performance At Nwc, Matthew Scott, Brant Vermeer
Celebration of Research
In this paper, we study the impact of athletics on academic performance at Northwestern College. Using data from 2006-08 and 2013-17, we show average ACT score for athletes is lower compared to non-athletes. Additionally, athletes typically earn lower GPAs in their first year, even after controlling for past academic performance. This negative relationship between athletics and first-year GPA is most prevalent among students entering college with a low composite ACT score. The data show mandatory meetings with coaches for struggling students do not have a statistically significant impact on average team GPA, but this requirement may have a positive impact …

Based on prospective student data from 2006-08 and 2013-17, this study identifies the impact that the Juffer Fieldhouse had on the enrollment decisions of prospective student-athletes. I show that the opening of this new indoor facility is associated with a 8.54% increase in the probability of enrollment for prospective students with an athletic interest compared to non-athletes. Furthermore, student athletes who expressed interest in sports directly supported by the …
What Parenting Style Should We Use? A Study On The Relationship Styles In Academics And Career Outlook, Amber Schubert
What Parenting Style Should We Use? A Study On The Relationship Styles In Academics And Career Outlook, Amber Schubert
Celebration of Research
The current study investigated the relationship between parenting styles, academic achievement and career outlook. A sample of 133 participants took part in this study. Parenting styles were measured by the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1991). GPA was used to asses an individual’s academic performance. A questionnaire written by the researcher was used to test the parent’s involvement in academics and their career outlooks. Four hypotheses were used in this study. First, it was hypothesized that students who experienced authoritative parenting styles would show higher academic achievement in college than when other parenting styles from at least one parent were experienced. …

Why Me? Connections Between Socioeconomic Status, Religiosity, Perceived Personal Control, And Views Of Suffering, Alex Currier, Emily Starr, Dr. Melanie Nyhof, Dr. Meghan Page
Why Me? Connections Between Socioeconomic Status, Religiosity, Perceived Personal Control, And Views Of Suffering, Alex Currier, Emily Starr, Dr. Melanie Nyhof, Dr. Meghan Page
Celebration of Research
When tragedy strikes, how do individuals make sense of suffering? If God is good, why do bad things happen to good people? Do people differ in how they understand suffering based on socioeconomic status and on religiosity and the way in which they view God? Research indicates that individuals of lower socioeconomic status tend to be more religious that those higher in economic status (Wimberley, 2016). However low SES individuals also tend to perceive themselves as having less control over their lives and God as having more control (Schieman, 2010). High SES individuals report feeling that they have more control …
How Do Visuals Affect Challenging Behaviors In The Preschool Classroom?, Shadley Grimes, Sara Waring-Tiedeman
How Do Visuals Affect Challenging Behaviors In The Preschool Classroom?, Shadley Grimes, Sara Waring-Tiedeman
Celebration of Research
Children with autism (ASD) are being included increasingly in the general education setting for preschool. This brings with it unique challenges as these children often are significantly discrepant from their peers in their communication abilities, both receptively and expressively. Beyond communication, ASD affects the child’s joint attention skills, necessary for observational learning and sharing social experiences, each of which are significant elements in a typical preschool setting. These delays lead the child to frustration, which can be expressed in aggression, disruption, and other challenging behaviors. These behaviors negatively affect the student’s ability to participate in preschool activities, make friends, and …
Just Making Small Talk?: A Fresh Look Inside Mundane Conversation, Alex Currier
Just Making Small Talk?: A Fresh Look Inside Mundane Conversation, Alex Currier
Celebration of Research
What is small talk, and why is it important for human relationships? Small talk is sometimes perceived as marginal to actual conversations: perfunctory, mundane, and inconsequential. Based on six weeks of observation at a local breakfast joint, this study reveals how “small talk” took on a much deeper importance to a group of elderly men who gathered for coffee each day. I found that small talk, though produced in brief, often chopped up segments, was the main focus in conversations. And while discussion around small talk seldom becomes intimate or reciprocated, discussions are unique in the fact that interruptions and …
What Makes A Good Student?, James Warren, Jennifer S. Feenstra Dr., Sydney Batz, Jordanna Kruse
What Makes A Good Student?, James Warren, Jennifer S. Feenstra Dr., Sydney Batz, Jordanna Kruse
Celebration of Research
Abstract
Academic achievement in college students has been predicted in previous studies from the application of self-regulation study strategies, academic self-efficacy, study skills, need for achievement, and procrastination. As part of a larger study looking at the effect of a study skill intervention, 49 college aged students were assessed for the variables listed above. A statistically significant correlation was found between self-regulation and self-efficacy. Using a multiple regression, the variables together predicted students’ GPAs, however, it was only study skills that was a statistically significant predictor. In zero-order correlations, self-regulation and self-efficacy were significantly correlated. More research should be done …
Intuitions About God And Satan: The Relationship Of Mentalizing And Imagination With The Experience Of Supernatural Good And Evil, Paige Boote, Ethan Husbands, Taelor Lamansky, Rebekah Muilenburg, Hannah Paauw, Bailey Swain
Celebration of Research
Believers in relational deities conceptualize god(s) as agents with mental states. The ability to imagine other minds may be one of the cognitive foundations of religious belief. Research on this relationship is mixed, however. This study tests this relationship across experiences of supernatural good and evil rather than abstract beliefs.
Previous research has demonstrated that mentalizing significantly predicted prayer type (Edman et al., 2015; 2017). However, a multi-site replication study failed to replicate the initial results, indicating that perhaps mode of prayer is more complexly related to mentalizing than initially hypothesized. Edman (2015; 2018) extended this research by including measures …
Partition Of A Team, Elizabeth Ellis
Partition Of A Team, Elizabeth Ellis
Celebration of Research
This research looks at the Northwestern College’s varsity baseball team’s partition. Within the team are two sub-sets, the 15 pitching only players and the rest of the team. Through the interaction and conversation of the players, the structure of practices and attention of the coaches, the two sub-sets team displayed an individualistic mindset of being separate from the other. This research is furthered by Simmel’s concept of Multiple Group-Affiliations. There can be multiple loyalties to sub-groups within the main group, illustrating the loyalties between the pitching group, field players and the rest of the team. Also based on Durkheim’s concept …

Changes In Attitude Towards Science Among College Students In A General Education Life Science Course, Michelle Burrows
Changes In Attitude Towards Science Among College Students In A General Education Life Science Course, Michelle Burrows
Student Research Symposium
General education science courses are often required in higher education in fulfillment of a general science requirement for a degree program. However, students may have negative attitudes toward science when they do not perceive a connection with their degree, career goals, or their everyday life. Students' negative attitudes toward learning science can decrease their desire to further their science knowledge (Gogolin & Swartz, 1992). Because a basic understanding of science is important to function and make informed decisions in society, it is imperative that we recognize ways to improve students' attitudes toward science. Students enrolled in a breadth level life …

An emerging method of integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in elementary settings is through the use of coding robot tasks. These coding robot tasks have the potential to enhance elementary students' mathematics learning and computational thinking (CT) skills. Research documenting how CT skills develop in young children is limited. The purpose of this case study is to examine one student's progression of mathematics and CT skills as they engage in tasks with a coding robot. This investigation documents the progression of a 5-year-old kindergarten student who attends a small, private elementary school. The student and a peer participated …
Hydraulic Fracturing, Mandilyn Hatch, Shannon Burnham
Hydraulic Fracturing, Mandilyn Hatch, Shannon Burnham
Student Research Symposium
Hydraulic fracturing or also know as fracking, the removal of natural gas and oil from shale rock, took off in the 1990s, but the anti-fracking movement didn't start taking notice until 2005. Fracking began to take place in the the south and the middle of the United States, because those areas are not known for have environmental activists. Anti-fracking groups main goal was to convince the public that fracking, caused health problems, contaminated drinking water, and increased seismic activity. Where as pro-fracking groups claim that it creates jobs, and boosts the economy for the locals in the area. Our main …

Antisocial Behaviors In Everyday Life Of A College Student, Ari Romo, Tiana Rowley
Student Research Symposium
Some Scholars have posited that antisocial behaviors associated with maladaptive lifestyles. Previous experiments identify correlations between prosocial traits and antisocial characteristics using statistical methods of data from a variety of personality tests and surveys. We know prosocial and antisocial behaviors have traits that affect everyday relationships, but there is limited research on how certain characteristics (e.g. psychopathy, heroism, impulsivity, rule breaking, etc.) in antisocial behaviors influence an individual's everyday work and school environment. By conducting an experimental design based off of a series of personality questionnaires and surveys pertinent to possible influencing factors of antisocial behaviors (such as psychopathy) on …

For this literature review, nine different studies have been reviewed to answer the research question over a variety of settings. In the nine different studies that were reviewed the animals used were either dogs, horses, or guinea pigs. These studies were used to determine which of these animals were more effective in a therapeutic setting, and more effective in the improvement of the symptoms in …
A Place For Everyone: Assessing Recreational Opportunities For Children In Urban, Suburban, And Rural Communities Across The United States, Emily Cook
Student Research Symposium
Despite an increased need to remain physically active, data suggest that fitness levels decrease across childhood and adolescence (Cooper, 2010). While anecdotal reports often blame this phenomenon on a normalized increase in meal portion size and adolescents' inclination toward screen time (e.g., gaming, media, entertainment), researchers are beginning to investigate the community and family level barriers that may limit or prevent structured and unstructured physical activity among children and adolescents. In line with these efforts, the present research was designed to address the potential link of community infrastructure and youth well-being across a range of communities in the United States. …
Effects Of Discussion Strategies And Learner Interactions On Performance In Online Mathematics Courses: An Application Of Learning Analytics, Ji-Eun Lee
Student Research Symposium
In higher education, a widely used online instructional method to enhance learners' engagement, presence, and achievement is asynchronous online discussions. Yet studies demonstrating their effectiveness, especially in high-failure rate courses like mathematics, remain elusive. The objectives of the study are to investigate 1) what online discussion strategies are associated with positive student performance, 2) to what extent do different structures designed into online discussions impact the kinds of learner interactions, and 3) what types of learner interactions are associated with positive student performance. In particular, by applying a set of text mining and data mining techniques (e.g., Classification and Regression …

I Can't Breathe; The Effects Of Hydraulic Fracturing On Public Health, Lily Fullmer, Sophie Hancey
Student Research Symposium
This research analyzes public health risks associated with hydraulic fracturing and the public perception of these risks specifically in Denton, Texas. Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is an expensive and environmentally harmful project that might not be worth it with the potential of air or water pollution at every site. The United States Energy Information Agency released an assessment in 2012 that the Marcellus Shale contains 141 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making it one of the largest reserves in the world (Brasier et al., 2017). More specifically, Denton County in Texas is one of the core counties …
