Assessing Learning Orientation To Maximize Academic Achievement, Megan Rodgers Apr 2019

Assessing Learning Orientation To Maximize Academic Achievement, Megan Rodgers

Research Days

The Student Behavior Checklist (SBC) is a tool which helps teachers monitor how students approach learning by measuring the constructs of learned helplessness and mastery orientation. Learned helplessness is a passive behavior that is characterized by an inability to learn, often displayed in students who are frequently subjected to stressful events. Individuals who develop learned helplessness attribute failures to personal inadequacy, which lead to negative attitudes towards tasks, becoming overwhelmed with frustration, and developing less effective strategies after failure. A concept of behavior in contrast to learned helplessness is mastery orientation. Mastery orientated students believe that they effort they put …

When The Job You Were Hired For Changes: Realigning Job Descriptions With Job Priorities, Christina Hillman, Mia Breitkopf

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

In this poster, two librarians at two different institutions will present results of job audits they completed, based on the Academic Library Value: The Impact Starter Kit by Megan Oakleaf (2017). Collaborating across institutions, these early-career librarians were able to work through the job audit process together, and engage in open discussions that might have been impossible with a different colleague at their home institutions.

These librarians each decided to complete a job audit because they saw a need to recast their job descriptions. Each holds a position that was newly created at the time they were hired, in order …

Digital Archives In The Discovery Layer: A Collaboration Between Archivists And Technical Services Librarians, Christina A. Beis, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services increases the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at a medium-sized institution had been using Archive-It to collect websites for a few years, but the information was isolated in a separate platform and wasn’t effectively marketed to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the website collections into the discovery layer. Metadata was added at the seed level and indexed on a single, user-friendly platform. Attendees will learn about implementing digital archive collections and explore how they can increase their visibility through marketing.

The Effect Of A Changing Marriage Age On Marriage Continuity, Sarah Gargan Apr 2019

The Effect Of A Changing Marriage Age On Marriage Continuity, Sarah Gargan

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

Marriage stability has a wide range of determinants, such as education, marital history, and demographic characteristics. Age at marriage, however, has repeatedly been cited as one of the most important influences. Since the 1950s, divorce rates and the mean age at marriage for both men and women have seen a great deal of change. Past studies suggest that an early age at marriage is associated with a higher risk of divorce. Studies also propose that this relationship only holds up to a certain point. Changes to marriage age and divorce rates can have unforeseen interactions with cohabitation, fertility, educational attainment, …

The Forgotten Expedition Of The Michigan Polar Bears, Laura Anthon, Jamie Breyfogle, Timothy Embertson, Natalie Weg

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

The Michigan Polar Bear expedition saw Allied forces leading a controversial excursion into Northern Russia during the concluding years of World War I. Despite thousands of soldiers being sent to interfere with the Russian Civil War, the Polar Bear Expedition has been lost from collective memory. We publicly inquired about the expedition, then combined this research with a found scholarly consensus about the lack of cognizance relating to the events. This revealed a disconnect, which led us to inquire as to the nature and origin of its historical omission. Our primary sources of research focused on the oral histories of …

A Cultural Analysis Of Twenty One Pilots, Annah Duffey

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

Twenty One Pilots, a popular band in the United States, has become a subject of intrigue in popular culture, since it challenges lyrical and musical themes through genre variation and themes of internal complexities requiring intricate listening among consumers.Through close analysis of photos, songs, music videos, and media interviews, this three-part paper and website project sought to uncover messages the band has promoted and perhaps, unintentionally advertised to its listeners. Semiotic analysis showed that the band positions itself as unusual by placing popular symbols within alternative symbol systems. Discourse analysis of the band’s song “Neon Gravestones” showed that the band …

Revealing The Hidden Humanities: Strategies For Academic Libraries To Improve Access And Awareness, Jody Condit Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

While research in the sciences and social sciences has become increasingly visible to search engines, research in the humanities has remained relatively hidden. There are discipline-specific challenges to scholarly communication in the humanities. Visualizations from two studies illustrate how humanities scholarship currently has limited discoverability and access. These results suggest that academic libraries are well-positioned to increase the visibility of humanities scholarship if they can leverage relationships. This poster presents opportunities for collaboration across library areas and strategies for revealing research in the humanities. Ideas for further exploration are identified and attendees will be invited to share their insights.

Sheryl Sandberg: A Look At Women In The C-Suite, Leah Asen Apr 2019

Sheryl Sandberg: A Look At Women In The C-Suite, Leah Asen

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

This study set out to understand the ways that society discursively constructs female leaders in the workforce. Although women currently make up a little under half the workforce, very few women are at top-level positions in hierarchical businesses. This project used semiotic analysis, discourse analysis, and intersectional analysis to deconstruct texts centering Sheryl Sandberg. By deconstructing multiple texts, this study uncovers explicit and implicit messages that persist in the conversation about women in the workplace. This study found that while women are welcome in the workplace today there are still deep-rooted cultural oppressions at work that must be addressed and …

Rural Brain Drain, Katheryn Irwin Apr 2019

Rural Brain Drain, Katheryn Irwin

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

This project focuses on the phenomenon of college graduates migrating to big cities, and thus creating a loss of human capital in small towns. This phenomenon is also known as rural “brain drain.” I expect to find that small towns engage in a variety of activities and development plans in order to create more opportunities and jobs for college graduates, and to gain back human capital. This phenomenon holds great significance as more and more young academics and professionals are moving to big cities and metropolitan areas than ever before.
