Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Teach Media Literacy: A Response To “Fake News”, Todd S. Cherner, Kristal Curry Apr 2019

Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Teach Media Literacy: A Response To “Fake News”, Todd S. Cherner, Kristal Curry

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The call to integrate media literacy into public education is not new. However, with the rise of “fake news” and sensationalism along with technology’s ever-growing role in society, media literacy offers teachers and students a set of skills to analyze, critique, and respond to the information that appears before them in the digital texts they read, the television shows they watch, and their social media feeds. As multiple case studies have identified ways teachers are already blending media literacy into their instruction, this case study used a lesson plan assignment coupled with a survey to analyze how pre-service teachers enrolled …

Simulated Manual Interaction As The Conceptual Base For Reference And Predication: A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Integration Between Handling Gestures And Speech, Ryan D. Smith Apr 2019

Simulated Manual Interaction As The Conceptual Base For Reference And Predication: A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Integration Between Handling Gestures And Speech, Ryan D. Smith

Linguistics ETDs

Prior research on representational hand gestures has shown that an object’s affordances influence both the likelihood that it will be indexed in a representational gesture, and the form of the gesture used to refer to it. Objects which afford being held are associated with higher gesture rates than objects which do not afford being held. Further research has shown that the ways humans prototypically interact with an object also influence the reference technique used to refer to that object through a hand gesture. An object that people interact with manually will tend to be indexed through a gesture imitating the …

How Professional Physical Therapist Education Programs Develop Cultural Competence Within Their Students: An Exploratory Concurrent Mixed Methods Study, Dustin E. Domingo

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory concurrent mixed methods study was to describe experiences that shape the factors of cultural intelligence (CQ) as perceived by students of professional physical therapist education programs. In addition, it was the purpose of this study to determine whether any particular factor of cultural intelligence influenced one’s overall cultural competence according to the cultural competence continuum by Cross et al. (1989).

Methodology: Students in a professional physical therapist education program completed a questionnaire, which included Likert scale questions, open ended questions, and a 37-item self-assessment based on the expanded cultural intelligence scale by Van Dyne …

Winning With Highly At-Risk Student-Athletes, Ayana Mcwilliams

Title III Professional Development Reports

Throughout one’s coaching career, coaches will experience several complexities as it relates to the well-being of the student-athletes that we coach. In the coaching community, there are several conversations being had about a “New Breed” of student-athletes coming through the pipeline. The premise of this conversation is based on a new reality that student-athletes today require much more than skill based training and preparation. That coaches must serve in a greater capacity than just coaching, and must be equipped to serve in several other roles, such as a parental figure, counselor, motivator, amongst others.

While attending the Women’s Basketball Coaching …

El Reajuste De La Derecha Colombiana. El Éxito Electoral Del Uribismo, Laura Gamboa Gutierrez

Political Science Faculty Publications

Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli Apr 2019

Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli

Economics ETDs

This dissertation presents a collection of essays that study ways in which human mobility affects economic development in origin countries. It focuses on Latin America—a region historically connected to episodes of large-scale migration, recipient of significant remittance flows, and victim of sluggish economic growth. The first two chapters examine the effects of return migration from the United States on aggregate economic welfare and non-state violence in communities of origin in Mexico. The analysis is motivated by the historic reversal in the Mexico-U.S. migration flows in the early 2000s. The third chapter analyzes the interaction between remittances, migration, and secondary school …

Managing Madness: The Ethics Of Identifying And Treating Mental Illness, Mason Seely Apr 2019

Managing Madness: The Ethics Of Identifying And Treating Mental Illness, Mason Seely

Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award

This essay analyzes different contemporary models for defining mental illness and offers a new framework that promotes the use of normative values during the clinical diagnostic process. Although ethic centric models for identifying mental illness do currently exist, these accounts are limited. Specifically, these accounts acknowledge the relationship between mental illness labels and implied responsibility in making their argument to support a normative framework, yet do not explain what capacities are necessary for an agent to have full responsibility. Recognizing this shortcoming, this paper provides an enriched model for identifying mental illness by marrying a normative conception of psychiatric dysfunction …

Creating Low-Carbon Communities: Evaluating The Role Of Individual Agency And Systemic Inequality In San Jose, Ca, Erin Jessica Ronald Apr 2019

Creating Low-Carbon Communities: Evaluating The Role Of Individual Agency And Systemic Inequality In San Jose, Ca, Erin Jessica Ronald

Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award

Following a scholarly need to test compelling community level sociodemographic representations of environmental behaviors and outcomes, a sequential mixed method approach was used to evaluate the connections of human agency and systemic inequalities with carbon footprints. Statistical analyses of the 2016 SDG San Jose Dashboard data of city blocks and 2009 - 2013 ACS survey data were supplemented with interviews with eight climate action-oriented community engagement professionals in the South Bay. Boundary limiting socioeconomic conditions for systemic inequalities and human agency, dimensions of Gidden’s Structuration model, were specified. Partially supporting structural inequality theories, socioeconomic resources, primarily, and to a lesser …

Foundation For Measuring Community Sustainability, Pamela A. Mischen, George C. Homsy, Carl P. Lipo, Robert Holahan, Valerie Imbruce, Andreas Pape, Joe Graney, Ziang Zhang, Louisa M. Holmes, Manuel Reina

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

In order to understand the impact of individual communities on global sustainability, we need a community sustainability assessment system (CSAS). While many sustainability assessment systems exist, they prove inadequate to the task. This article presents the results of a systematic review of the literature on existing sustainability assessment systems; offers a definition of a sustainable community; provides a multi-scale, systems approach to thinking about community; and makes recommendations from the field of performance measurement for the construction of a CSAS.

La Gota Que Colma La Caguama: Cummulative Tensions Transformed Into The Defense Of Water, Anthony J. Meluso Apr 2019

La Gota Que Colma La Caguama: Cummulative Tensions Transformed Into The Defense Of Water, Anthony J. Meluso

Geography ETDs

Making water management decisions is often where dreams and visions about potential futures are constructed and contested (Swengedouw 2015). However, in a globalized world, it is not well understood how people can challenge dominant paradigms to shape desirable futures when they are also complicit in, and dependent on existing structures (Arts & Buizer 2009; Emery, Perks, & Bracken 2013: Kleinschmit, Böcher, & Giessen 2009). This project examines a brewery conflict in the Mexicali Valley that provides an example of how protesters were able to challenge dominant assumptions about water management in a complex, globalized environment. I draw on Laclau’s (2005) …

Charter Schools At An Impasse: Evaluating America’S Charter School System, Katie Pope Apr 2019

Charter Schools At An Impasse: Evaluating America’S Charter School System, Katie Pope

Featured Research

Through an analysis of resources from the State Departments of Education and state education codes, I argue that levels of state regulation of charter schools differ in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and New York. Specifically, I demonstrate that this regulation can be classified as low, moderate, or high, depending on the language of the state’s educational legislation. I also analyze the racial diversity of each state’s charter school and public school sectors, using race as a proxy for income levels. This data is used to assess the educational outcomes of the different sectors. It is evident that charter schools are …

Written And Oral Histories Of The Chicano Movement At New Mexico Highlands University, 1968-1970, Julianna C. Wiggins

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This thesis presents spoken, written, and drawn histories produced before the Chicano Movement at New Mexico Highlands University in November 1970 and the discourses which have followed in the movement’s wake fifty years later. This qualitative study explores the campus climate at NMHU using the student newspaper Highlands Candle. Its contents from 1968 until 1971 are contrasted with the multiple voices of a generation which adopted the term Chicano as a racial identifier into the NMHU vernacular. Social factors including the formation of student-of-color groups and the return of veterans from the Vietnam War appear to change the student …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Substance use disorders (SUDs) currently affect a significant number of people, directly and indirectly, in the United States. Low rates of treatment and high rates of relapse point to the need for an increased and diversified engagement of SUDs theoretically and clinically. This literature review explores current research on SUDs and attachment, SUDs and shame, and SUDs and the Expressive Therapies. The literature review provides relevant theoretical frameworks and current clinical applications for treatment of SUDs considering attachment and shame’s role in substance use from an Expressive Therapies perspective. The role of relationships and imagination in both the maintenance and …

Reduced-Impact Logging For Climate Change Mitigation (Ril-C) Can Halve Selective Logging Emissions From Tropical Forests, Anand Roopsind Apr 2019

Reduced-Impact Logging For Climate Change Mitigation (Ril-C) Can Halve Selective Logging Emissions From Tropical Forests, Anand Roopsind

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Selective logging causes at least half of the emissions from tropical forest degradation. Reduced-impact logging for climate (RIL-C) is proposed as a way to maintain timber production while minimizing forest damage. Here we synthesize data from 61 coordinated field-based surveys of logging impacts in seven countries across the tropics. We estimate that tropical selective logging emitted 834 Tg CO2 in 2015, 6% of total tropical greenhouse gas emissions. Felling, hauling, and skidding caused 59%, 31%, and 10% of these emissions, respectively. We suggest that RIL-C incentive programs consider a feasible target carbon impact factor of 2.3 Mg emitted per …

Nature As An Impermanent Canvas: An Intergenerational Nature-Based Art Community Engagement Project, Joy Geha Apr 2019

Nature As An Impermanent Canvas: An Intergenerational Nature-Based Art Community Engagement Project, Joy Geha

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The longing for permanence, including an attachment to objects, is a perpetual desire in human beings. In the artistic world, the longing for permanence is reflected in the desire to conserve artworks forever. This has left humans in an existential dilemma of interpersonal and transpersonal conflicts with the world beyond them. A one-day community workshop in nature-based expressive arts was offered to explore the idea of transience and impermanence through creative existential and transpersonal notions. The workshop involved time indoors and outdoors, and activities included self-check-ins and checkouts, a sensory awareness and mindful walking exercise as mover and witness, and …

Social Justice Through The Lens Of The Cross: A Case For A Biblical Foundation Of Social Work, Allison P. Kasch Apr 2019

Social Justice Through The Lens Of The Cross: A Case For A Biblical Foundation Of Social Work, Allison P. Kasch

Senior Honors Theses

Social work values social justice, as the profession promotes the well-being of society and the rights each person holds. Although social justice is a core value of social work, it is necessary to address the value’s foundation, and questioning the “why” behind social justice calls for a deeper understanding of social work. Using the “Inside-Out” apologetic approach demonstrates how the secular grounding of social work neglects to provide the foundation required to make claims on the necessity of social justice. A Christian foundation, however, offers the grounding needed to support the values and mission of social work, and it is …

Good And Bad Deaths: How Coalitions Transformed Framing Processes In The Movement For Physician Assisted Suicide, Keith D. Wilkins Apr 2019

Good And Bad Deaths: How Coalitions Transformed Framing Processes In The Movement For Physician Assisted Suicide, Keith D. Wilkins

Sociology ETDs

Research on physician assisted suicide (PAS) has largely been neglected by sociological scholarship which has focused primarily on how demographic features affect support of this contentious issue. PAS represents a unique case to contribute to sociological knowledge on coalitions and framing, which has yet to fully understand how movement frames change over time and what factors makes coalition activity worth the effort. The current study addresses these gaps in the literature by studying how activist organizations that support (right-to-die) or resist (right-to-life) PAS, frame the issue. Specifically, this study aims to answer two research questions: (1) How do PAS social …

The Effects Of Qr Code Prompts Posted To A Solar Charging Bench On Website Visibility, Sage Campbell

Honors Theses

This study will investigate the effects of graphic prompts with integrated quick response (QR) codes posted to a solar charging bench. The hypothesis is that posted prompts and the bench itself will increase website traffic and visibility of sustainable actions at Western Michigan University. Website traffic will be monitored using Google Analytics software which will allow for tracking of website visits specifically from scanning the QR code. Thus, data from bench installation and from bench installation with prompts will be compared with baseline data from before installation of the bench and before installation graphic prompts. Data that supports the hypothesis, …

Perspectives Of Behavioral Health Providers In School Based Health Clinics (Sbhc) About Behavioral Health Services And Low-Income Adolescent Males’ Academic Achievement, Suzanne Gagnon Apr 2019

Perspectives Of Behavioral Health Providers In School Based Health Clinics (Sbhc) About Behavioral Health Services And Low-Income Adolescent Males’ Academic Achievement, Suzanne Gagnon

Nursing ETDs

ABSTRACT

Low-income adolescent males are subject to both health and educational inequities. Male adolescents are the least likely of all pediatric age and gender groups to access either primary care or behavioral health services. This same population is most likely to not complete high school or college. Health and educational outcomes are both affected by social determinants. School-based Health Centers (SBHCs) are known for providing access to primary care and behavioral health services for low-income and vulnerable populations. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to identify themes from one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews with behavioral health providers, who provide …

A Growth Mindset Intervention Improves Interest But Not Academic Performance In The Field Of Computer Science, Jeni L. Burnette, Crystal L. Hoyt, V. Michelle Russell, Barry Lawson, Carol S. Dweck, Eli Finkel

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We investigated whether a growth mindset intervention could be leveraged to promote performance and interest in computer science, through what mechanisms it might do so, and whether effects were stronger for women than for men. In particular, we explored whether the growth mindset intervention improved academic performance and career interest by increasing intrinsic value. We developed and tested a scalable, online, 4-session growth mindset intervention at 7 universities, across 16 introductory computer science classes (N = 491). The intervention did not have a significant total effect on academic performance, although it indirectly improved grades via value. Additionally, the intervention, …
