Exploring Multiple Dimensions Of Young Women’S Fertility Preferences In Malawi, Ashley Larsen Gibby, Nancy Luke Jun 2019

Exploring Multiple Dimensions Of Young Women’S Fertility Preferences In Malawi, Ashley Larsen Gibby, Nancy Luke

Faculty Publications

Introduction Standard survey measures of fertility preferences, such as the desire for and preferred timing of future births, do not capture the complexity of individuals’ preferences. New research focuses on additional dimensions of emotions and expectations surrounding childbearing. Few quantitative studies, however, consider the influence of all three dimensions of fertility preferences concurrently.

Methods Using longitudinal survey data from the Tsogolo la Thanzi project (2009–2012) in Malawi, this study employed logistic regression analysis to investigate the influence of young women’s emotions, expectations, and a standard measure of fertility preferences on pregnancy and modern contraceptive use.

Results Young women experienced high …

Based on focus groups we conducted with fifty-four community members at five different Southern California–based community archives, this paper examines how community archives users conceive of records as agents, embodied with the voices of past lives, and capable of facilitating meaning for those who access, activate, and interpret them. In our findings, users of community archives not only surfaced the notion of records as dynamic, …

Modelling Weighted Signed Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini Jun 2019

Modelling Weighted Signed Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini

Conference papers

In this paper we introduce a new modelling approach to analyse weighted signed networks by assuming that their generative process consists of two models: the interaction model which describes the overall connectivity structure of the relations in the network without taking into account neither the weight nor the sign of the dyadic relations; and the conditional weighted signed network model describes how the edge signed weights form given the interaction structure. We then show how this modelling approach can facilitate the interpretation of the overall network process. Finally, we adopt a Bayesian inferential approach to illustrate the new methodology by …

The Long Run Economic Effects Of The Dustbowl Migration, Julie Hollenbaugh, Joseph Price Jun 2019

The Long Run Economic Effects Of The Dustbowl Migration, Julie Hollenbaugh, Joseph Price

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this project we explore the long-run economic effects of the dustbowl migration on children in families that moved out of the Oklahoma dustbowl region in the 1930’s relative to children in families that stayed in the region. My primary contribution to this ongoing analysis was the creation of a data set that links individuals across the 1930 and 1940 federal censuses. This allows us to determine which children moved away from the dustbowl region and which stayed, and compare characteristics across the two groups.

“Come Hell And High Water”: The Role Of Archivists, Historical Myths, And Activism In Communities Facing Repeated Extreme Flooding Events, Jay-Marie Bravent, Kari A. Greenwalt, Shawn Gladden

Library Presentations

While the names Harvey, Sandy, and Katrina ring loudly in the ears of many today – can we still learn valuable lessons in the archives from Diane, Camille, and Agnes? Climate change increasingly contributes to not only more frequent and more violent tropical cyclogenesis, but repeated extreme flooding events caused by unnamed weather systems, supercells, dam failures, and surges from rising oceans. These events have opened questions of survival for communities across the United States, and recent examples show that some communities indeed face pressure to abandon their long-standing ground and forego rebuilding.

In a 2013 article titled “Come Hell …

To Tell Or Not To Tell: Student Responses To Negative Behavior In Elementary School, Brent D. Harger

Sociology Faculty Publications

In this article I examine the factors that influence fifth grade student decisions regarding whether or not to report negative interactions to adults. Data from observations and interviews with students and adults show that there are many factors influencing the reluctance to tell on others. Among them is a school context in which verbal attacks are downplayed and telling is seen as ineffective and stigmatized. This context prevents bystanders from reporting what they have observed and places those with a lack of social support at a significant disadvantage when dealing with negative behavior.

Getting Beyond “Both Sides”: Fyc Instructors & Librarians Working Together To Cultivate Critical Information Literacy With Popular Sources, Loring Pfeiffer, Julia Voss, Nicole Branch

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Last fall, our team of two FYC instructors and one librarian implemented curriculum designed to develop students’ critical information-literacy skills in relation to popular sources. Preliminary results of our work suggest that students’ work with popular sources falls short of CWPA and ACRL goals. In our workshop-style presentation, we ask how other conference attendees instruct students in the assessment and use of popular sources and discuss the pedagogical strategies that we plan to use as we iterate on our work.

"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Natural recovery is inhibition or moderation of problematic substance use without employing the use of formal addiction services. A neuroanthropological approach to natural recovery highlights the importance of both social and biological aspects of achieving this "self" led process of change. Throughout this project I take a critical anthropological approach to natural recovery, which explores a more holistic conception and historically situated view of current natural recovery theory. This research project employs a neuroanthropological perspective to assess how college students perform natural recovery. Using ethnographic methods, which highlight the social and physical experience of moderation, I discuss how students negotiate …

This study used the California Health Interview Survey 2009–2014 data sets for African American children aged 5–11 years (n = 1,049). The dependent variable was body mass index (BMI) while the …
