Rethinking Map Literacy And An Analysis Of Quantitative Map Literacy, Ming Xie Jun 2019

Rethinking Map Literacy And An Analysis Of Quantitative Map Literacy, Ming Xie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Maps are increasingly being used in traditional and virtual media, and civic discourse on political, social, and environmental issues, among others, is more and more becoming influenced by them. The often-used expression of a “picture tells a 1000 words” has never been so apt in our progressively more visual world. Despite this increased role and importance of maps, map literacy, as a field of research, remains rather underdeveloped. This is especially so for thematic maps, the very type of map that is finding increasing currency in discourse. As part of this under-developed nature of map literacy, the quantitative skills used …

The Challenges Of Digital Legacy Management On The Value Of Digital Objects To Older Australians, Derani Nathasha Dissanayake Jun 2019

The Challenges Of Digital Legacy Management On The Value Of Digital Objects To Older Australians, Derani Nathasha Dissanayake

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

People spend a considerable amount of time and money in collecting digital objects. Nine out of ten Australians have a social media account but 83% of them have not discussed with their family members what should happen to their social media accounts when they die (Steen, D’Alessandro, Graves, Perkins, Genders, Barbera, Shi, McGrath & Davis, 2017). Only 3% of Australians who had a Will included social media accounts in their Wills. People collect digital objects yet little attention is paid to their preservation. 71% of Australians are unaware of what happens to their digital assets when they die (Ibid, 2017). …

The Religious Impact: Understanding The Influence Of Religiosity On Attitudes Toward Policy Issues, Angela Farizo Mccarthy Jun 2019

The Religious Impact: Understanding The Influence Of Religiosity On Attitudes Toward Policy Issues, Angela Farizo Mccarthy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to shed light on the influence of religion on Americans’ attitudes toward policy concerns. How do denominational affiliation, religious participation, and religious beliefs influence one’s views on social and/or economic policies? I consider the impact of religious belonging, religious behaving, and religious believing—also known as the “3B’s” – on public opinion toward contemporary issues in the United States. In this comprehensive analysis, I discover the importance of including the religious dimensions in models of public policy attitudes. The first part of this project is to outline the current state of the literature and present …

Sex-Specific Personalities In The Purple Marsh Crab, Jillian Sterman, Jessica Barton, Panagiota Delmedico, Samantha Sweeney Jun 2019

Sex-Specific Personalities In The Purple Marsh Crab, Jillian Sterman, Jessica Barton, Panagiota Delmedico, Samantha Sweeney

DePaul Discoveries

Animals are considered to possess personalities when individuals differ in behavior, and these differences are consistent between situations. Several studies have identified personalities in diverse groups but less is known about personality variation between the sexes. In this study, we examined variation in two key personality traits (boldness, activity) in female and male purple marsh crabs (Sesarma reticulatum) using a semi-field approach. Specifically, we measured boldness and activity on two consecutive days using the same behavioral assays during each time point. Consistency (personality) was determined using Kendall’s coefficient of concordance based on Spearman correlation coefficients for each behavior. …

A Playful Life Cycle Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Children's Toys, Madeline R. Robertson, Christie Klimas Jun 2019

A Playful Life Cycle Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Children's Toys, Madeline R. Robertson, Christie Klimas

DePaul Discoveries

Toys aid in children’s progression through developmental stages, yet toy production has an environmental impact. This study is the first comparative life cycle assessment of three children’s toys. A life cycle assessment quantifies the impact of an item in comparable impact categories (i.e. global warming potential in kg CO2 equivalents). In this study, we use open LCA to compare toy impact from production to use. The results indicate that the plastic polybutylene carried the highest impact in terms of global warming potential for our predominantly plastic toy. The addition of a battery to the plush dog increased the toy’s eutrophication …

A Life Cycle Assessment Of Jewelry, Jessica Fernandez, Christie Klimas Jun 2019

A Life Cycle Assessment Of Jewelry, Jessica Fernandez, Christie Klimas

DePaul Discoveries

Jewelry is unique in that it is not a necessity, yet it holds sentimental and material value to the owner. Jewelry sales in the US have increased throughout time, meaning the demand for gold has almost always been increasing, as well. With more than half of the gold mined going towards the production of jewelry, it is the product with the highest demand of the resource. However, mining for the metals to produce a piece of jewelry, specifically gold, has negative consequences on both the environment and the people working in or living near mines. This study is a life …

Predicting Gambling Situations: The Roles Of Impulsivity, Substance Use, And Post-Traumatic Stress, Joshua B. Grubbs, Heather Chapman Jun 2019

Predicting Gambling Situations: The Roles Of Impulsivity, Substance Use, And Post-Traumatic Stress, Joshua B. Grubbs, Heather Chapman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Gambling disorder and symptoms of post-traumatic stress are highly comorbid. Numerous studies suggest that the presence of one (either disordered gambling or post-traumatic stress) substantially increases the odds of later developing the other. However, little is known about the etiological links between these two domains or the nuances of the comorbidity. Past research has suggested that symptoms of post-traumatic stress might be related to unique motivations for and beliefs about gambling. The present work sought to examine whether or not symptoms of post-traumatic stress might also be related to specific situational vulnerabilities to gambling behaviors. Using a large cross-sectional sample …

Party Blight In Rural Missouri: Causes And Consequences Of Local Organizational Decline, Joseph Anthony Jun 2019

Party Blight In Rural Missouri: Causes And Consequences Of Local Organizational Decline, Joseph Anthony

Dissertations

Political parties are fundamental institutions to representative democracies, and they have been an integral part of the American political fabric since the early 1800s. Changes in the political landscape have pressed social scientists to engage in a now long-running academic debate as to whether political parties are in a state of reform and adaptation in the modern campaign environment, or if they are in an overall state of decline. While there has been considerable attention given to national and state party organizations, very little is known about how local party organizations are faring in the modern campaign environment. This dissertation …

Politique, Onomastique Et Doublage Audiovisuel : De Quoi L’Anthroponyme Est-Il Le Nom ?, Frédérique Brisset Jun 2019

Politique, Onomastique Et Doublage Audiovisuel : De Quoi L’Anthroponyme Est-Il Le Nom ?, Frédérique Brisset

Al-Kīmiyā

Within lexicology, onomastics considers proper names, which are supposed to be unique lexical markers. One of their characteristics, according to linguists, is their untranslatability. Nevertheless, translation provides relevant tools for onomastics researchers. Comparative approaches, as they question the concept of the signifiers' referents for the target readers or listeners, ask for reflections on the essential meaning of proper names, their translation often revealing connotations well beyond the original marker. Thus, political anthroponyms prove very interesting: etymologically, politics imply a territorial setting. In movies, which picture a realistic world, a make-believe, the setting can be difficult to grasp if films are …

Percezione E Ruolo Delle Lingue Straniere E Dell’Arabo Standard In Alcune Commedie Di Ziad Rahbani, Giuseppe Emanuele Ventura Jun 2019

Percezione E Ruolo Delle Lingue Straniere E Dell’Arabo Standard In Alcune Commedie Di Ziad Rahbani, Giuseppe Emanuele Ventura

Al-Kīmiyā

This paper aims at analysing various passages from some of the most famous comedies by Lebanese playwright Ziad Rahbani, characterized by the use of different languages, language varieties and Modern Standard Arabic mixed with Lebanese Arabic. All of these extracts have been transcribed and translated into Italian, so that a linguistic analysis and review about peculiar leitmotivs of Ziad's comedies can be outlined. Furthermore, this analysis has turned out to be useful in order to highlight the value, the importance and the effects of the above-mentioned elements within the comedies. It proves the relationship between the use of language and …

D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald Jun 2019

D’Imaginaire En Imaginaire, James Archibald

Al-Kīmiyā

The American novelist Sinclair Lewis published It Can't Happen Here in 1935; this work of political fiction was then translated into French by Raymond Queneau and appeared two years later under the title Impossible ici. The source text reveals an imagined American here whereas the imagined xenophobic and racist world translated as ici served as a reminder of the reality of pre-war Europe. Readers of target-oriented translations benefit from translators' life experiences. Those same readers, who are often fond of foreignized translations, can also regret the intentional dissimulation of the source language-culture, because they love alterity as well. In …

Effective language teaching does not only depend on language proficiency but also on other specific characteristics of effective teachers whether native or non-native. Firstly, the article tackles the personal qualities of the teachers, which include motivation, intelligence, especially offering feedback and being adaptable; and self-care by taking care of themselves and overcoming burnout. Secondly, it refers to the professional qualifications of the teachers, which encompass professional development and self-reflection, knowledge of subject-matter, classroom management skills, and student-centered teaching. It also …

إعادة الترجمة أو الثبات الممنوع, Nour Nasrani Jun 2019

إعادة الترجمة أو الثبات الممنوع, Nour Nasrani

Al-Kīmiyā

This article deals with retranslation, its causes and characteristics. The analysis is illustrated by an English text taken from the "Prophet" (a book by Gibran Kahlil Gibran) translated into Arabic several times. Five different translations will be studied. This book was chosen because the writer approved the first translation. Why was it retranslated then? Some of the translators, in their introduction, justified their new approach and all of them agreed that the older versions were not faithful to Gibran's spirit and had some major errors. The article further discusses the different versions in Arabic while trying to define the concept …

Nouveauté Et Productivité Lexicale : Le Cas Des « Phrasal Verbs », Emilie Riguel

Al-Kīmiyā

Phrasal verbs are probably the most common and representative constructions of all the multi-word expressions in English. Indeed, suffice it to see the large number of existing phrasal verbs, not to mention that new ones are constantly coined, which shows they are a very productive and perpetually evolving class. This article aims to draw up a brief typology of neological phrasal verbs and to provide examples of the most relevant contemporary phrasal verbs in terms of lexical innovation.

May Hobeika Haddad, Rawan Ghaly

Al-Kīmiyā

As the translation process is a mental one, subject to cognitive processes, the article aims to study the effect of the attention as a cognitive factor in the translation process. After defining the concept of attention and its forms, the study proposes, in the first stage, a design that would explain how the translator manages his attention resources. The article presents in a second stage, an empirical study which aimed to explore the effect of distraction in the translated output and thus in making mistakes. The study adopted a mixed research methodology, quantitative and qualitative. The results showed an increase …

There Are Multiple And Geographically Distinct Opioid Crises In The U.S., Shannon M. Monnat Jun 2019

There Are Multiple And Geographically Distinct Opioid Crises In The U.S., Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Rates of fatal drug overdose increased 250% in the U.S. between 1999 and 2017, due in large part to a massive surge in overdoses involving opioids. However, there is substantial geographic variation in fatal opioid overdoses, and prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl are differentially responsible for high overdose rates across different parts of the U.S. This research brief summarizes the findings from a study just published in the American Journal of Public Health. The study shows that there are at least four geographically distinct opioid overdose crises in the U.S.

Social Learning In The Digital Age: The Impact Of Technoference On Mother-Child Attachment And Social Skills, Danielle N. Zayia Jun 2019

Social Learning In The Digital Age: The Impact Of Technoference On Mother-Child Attachment And Social Skills, Danielle N. Zayia

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown links between parenting practice and children’s social development. However, there is little research examining the role of parental technology use or technoference, which is the disruption caused by technology. In this study, parental technology use, child attachment style, maternal insularity, and children’s development of social skills were examined. Rating scales examining theses variables were completed by 80 mothers-child dyads between the ages of 18 and 50 with children between 6 and 10 years old. Confirmatory factor and measurement invariance analyses were conducted to examine and confirm the psychometric properties of each scale used in this study. Linear …

A Blueprint Or Change: How Punk Music In Belfast Affects Activism Today, Hannah Williams, Jacob Hickman Jun 2019

A Blueprint Or Change: How Punk Music In Belfast Affects Activism Today, Hannah Williams, Jacob Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Though art can be found in all walks of life, it lends itself particularly well to the expression of political frustration. During the deeply rooted religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant communities in Northern Ireland, commonly referred to as the Troubles, many artists and musicians used their creativity to speak out against the violence of the conflict. Born into a society of religious division and hatred, youths of the 1970s and 1980s often turned to the local punk music movement in order to bridge and speak out against the religious divide. Many believe this was critical to eventual peace in …

Analyzing A Corpus Of President Trump’S Public Statements To Reveal Possible Media Bias, Kevin Zalewski, William Eggington Jun 2019

Analyzing A Corpus Of President Trump’S Public Statements To Reveal Possible Media Bias, Kevin Zalewski, William Eggington

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In recent years, America has become extremely politically divided. As political polarization has increased, so has distrust of the media, especially during President Trump’s current term of office. The Media Insights Project reports that “just 17 percent of Americans give the news media high marks for being ‘very accurate.’” In this partisan political landscape, it can be difficult to know where to turn for unbiased, unspun news coverage. Where can a person learn what the president has said on a given topic without some type of filter coloring the information? This possible bias is a problem that corpus linguistics can …

Moral Transformation Of Religious Conflict: Believers & Bonfire In Belfast, Northern Ireland, Brinnan Schill, Jacob Hickman Jun 2019

Moral Transformation Of Religious Conflict: Believers & Bonfire In Belfast, Northern Ireland, Brinnan Schill, Jacob Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to investigate the cultural and historical implications of contemporary religious changes among two case studies of millenarian movements, drawing specifically on ethnographic field research already conducted in a Hmong village in Northern Thailand, and continuing research on conflict transformation among the Protestant and Catholic communities of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Drawing from both written and visual ethnographic methodology, the aim of this project is to use the unique qualities of a visually supplemented narrative to illustrate and explicate how people within these millenarian movements interpret religious conflict as an “enchanted” (Gell 1994) narrative of persecution, …

How To Get The Attention Of Government Officials: A Test Of The Effectiveness Of Social Proof Treatments, Aubriana Wolferts, Darren Hawkins Jun 2019

How To Get The Attention Of Government Officials: A Test Of The Effectiveness Of Social Proof Treatments, Aubriana Wolferts, Darren Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Social proof treatments—informing people about the behavior of their peers—have generally been shown effective in influencing subjects to engage in behavior due to a psychological desire to conform.1 Social proofs are more effective when they describe what peers typically do rather than what peers generally approve of, and when the social proof is more salient and closely related to the desired behavior.2
