Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards Jun 2018

Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Institutions that want to ensure the consistency of names across submissions to their Digital Commons repository, especially for self-submitted submissions, must develop their own methods for …

The Leadership Style Of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, Aubrey Immelman Jun 2018

The Leadership Style Of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This working paper presents a personality-based analysis of the likely leadership style of Chairman Kim Jong-un, supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in negotiations with U.S. president Donald Trump, inferred from the results of indirect personality assessments conducted 2013–2018 from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Kim’s primary personality patterns were found to be Outgoing/gregarious and Dominant/controlling, supplemented by secondary Accommodating/cooperative, Ambitious/confident, and Dauntless/adventurous features.

Outgoing individuals are dramatic attention‑getters who thrive on being the center of social events, go out of their way to be popular with others, and are confident in their social skills; …

Long-Term Impacts Of Parliamentary Gender Quotas In A Single-Party System: Symbolic Co-Option Or Delayed Integration?, Devin K. Joshi, Rakkee Kuttikadan Thimothy Jun 2018

Long-Term Impacts Of Parliamentary Gender Quotas In A Single-Party System: Symbolic Co-Option Or Delayed Integration?, Devin K. Joshi, Rakkee Kuttikadan Thimothy

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In recent years scholars have shifted their attention from the causes behind parliamentary gender quotas to their consequences for women’s descriptive, substantive, and symbolic representation. We contribute to this literature by focusing on long-term effects of gender quotas in the context of an authoritarian one-party system. Here we contest dominant theoretical explanations which posit that gender quotas in authoritarian states primarily serve the goals of symbolic co-option and window-dressing. Rather, we argue that while authoritarian adaptation may motivate the introduction of gender quotas, these quotas may result over time in what we call a delayed integration process featuring a gradual …

Analyzing Warrants And Worldviews In The Rhetoric Of Donald Trump And Hillary Clinton: Burke And Argumentation In The 2016 Presidential Election, Emma Frances Bloomfield, Gabriela Tscholl Jun 2018

Analyzing Warrants And Worldviews In The Rhetoric Of Donald Trump And Hillary Clinton: Burke And Argumentation In The 2016 Presidential Election, Emma Frances Bloomfield, Gabriela Tscholl

Communication Studies Faculty Research

Combining a dramatistic analysis with the Toulmin model productively contributes to a rhetorical understanding of the 2016 presidential election and locates Burke as an integral component of political communication criticism. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's rhetoric differed not only on policy arguments, but also on their rhetorical vision for America. Trump's campaign arguments privileged the agent and thus invoked identification with an idealist worldview, while Clinton's rhetoric privileged agency and thus invoked identification with a pragmatic one. Warrants and worldviews are interconnected parts of campaign rhetoric that contribute to both persuasion and identification.

The Nasa Glenn Research Center: An Economic Impact Study Fiscal Year 2017, Iryna Lendel, Jinhee Yun

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Economic impact is an analytical approach used to estimate the benefits generated by an entity for an affected region. This study uses an input-output (I-O) model to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn Research Center’s spending on the economies of Northeast Ohio (NEO) and Ohio. This analytical tool measures economic impact in terms of growth in output (sales), value added (output less intermediary goods), number of new and supported jobs, labor income, and tax revenues. For FY 2017 study, the Center used a methodology to measure NASA Glenn’s impact on the economies of Northeast Ohio and Ohio, as was used …

The Feasibility Of Augmenting A Fixed-Gap Bobbin Friction Stir Welding Tool With Cutters To Join Enclosed Castings, Adam Baxter Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

Bobbin Friction Stir Welding (BFSW) is a new application of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) that can be used to join materials together with little to no axial forces. This eliminates the need of a backplate or anvil needed to apply counter pressure against the tool. The applications of BFSW are growing every day. This new technology is helping the automotive industry and many other industries join materials more effectively and efficiently. This technology can be used to join materials with high strength to weight ratios to make cars lighter to increase fuel efficiency. This will also greatly reduce the cost …

A Framework For The Performance Analysis And Tuning Of Virtual Private Networks, Fridrich Shane Perez Jun 2018

A Framework For The Performance Analysis And Tuning Of Virtual Private Networks, Fridrich Shane Perez

Theses and Dissertations

With the rising trend of personal devices like laptops and smartphones being used in businesses and significant enterprises, the concern for preserving security arises. In addition to preserving security measures in outside devices, the network speed and performance capable by these devices need to be balanced with the security aspect to avoid slowing down virtual private network (VPN) activity. Performance tests have been done in the past to evaluate available software, hardware, and network security protocol options that will best benefit an entity according to its specific needs. With a variety of comparable frameworks available currently, it is a matter …

Stack The Deck: An Intervention For Regulating Verbal Participation In Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Katherine Ensign Montgomery Jun 2018

Stack The Deck: An Intervention For Regulating Verbal Participation In Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Katherine Ensign Montgomery

Theses and Dissertations

Some students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) struggle with social reciprocity, or the ability to engage in chains of back-and-forth conversation, interfering with other students' ability to respond to a question that is posed by the teacher in classrooms. The participants were 11 fifth grade students with autism spectrum disorder. We used a simple differential reinforcement intervention within a token system in direct instruction sessions for math to help balance the participation in a class of children with ASD as well as lower the number of talk-outs made by all students. Using a single-subject design, data were analyzed for changes …

The Impact Of Bully Victimization And Substance Use On Suicidal Behavior In Sexual Minority Youth, Ashley Christine Estoup Jun 2018

The Impact Of Bully Victimization And Substance Use On Suicidal Behavior In Sexual Minority Youth, Ashley Christine Estoup

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Bully victimization has been shown to be associated with a variety of problems in adolescence. Adolescent bully victims endorse higher rates of substance use, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. One possible explanation is that adolescents who are bullied use substances to cope with victimization and turn to suicidal behaviors when this coping mechanism proves ineffective. Sexual orientation is one variable that is believed to moderate these relationships. Non-heterosexual youth are more likely to be victimized by peers, engage in substance use, and experience suicidality. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between bully victimization, substance use, suicidality, …

Social Media Use And Its Impact On Relationships And Emotions, Spencer Palmer Christensen Jun 2018

Social Media Use And Its Impact On Relationships And Emotions, Spencer Palmer Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

A large majority of the people throughout the world own a smartphone and access social media on a daily basis. Because of this digital attachment, the author sought to understand to what extent this use has impacted the users' emotional well-being and offline interpersonal relationships. A sample size of 627 participants completed a mixed-methods survey consisting of Likert scale and short answer questions regarding social media use, emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships. Results revealed that the more time an individual spent on social media the more likely they were to experience a negative impact on their overall emotional well-being and …

Collaborations Between Academic Libraries And Other Campus Departments: An Annotated Bibliography, 2007-2017, Michael E. Mounce, Kristina E. Claunch

The Southeastern Librarian

For librarians today, reaching and meeting the needs of students and faculty can be both challenging and rewarding. Libraries face budget cuts, rapidly evolving and diverse technology, and a continued misconception of the image of the library and its purpose. However, librarians must persevere through these and other difficulties to provide useful resources and services and to ensure students and faculty know these tools are available. Different avenues for attaining this goal are available for research in the literature; however, the focus for this annotated bibliography is the avenue of collaboration. The Association of College & Research Libraries (2011) stated …

Faculty Expectations Of A University Library And Writing Center In Preventing Plagiarism

The Southeastern Librarian

Like many educational institutions, the University of South Alabama has seen a recent uptick in academic misconduct, especially plagiarism. To better understand and work toward solving this issue, the University’s Library and Writing Center conducted a survey of faculty across disciplines. The survey elicits part-time and full-time faculty perspectives on the Library and Writing Center’s roles in providing information literacy instruction and preventing plagiarism. Libraries and writing centers are uniquely situated to assist with preventing plagiarism. For example, academic libraries adhere to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, the tenets of which emphasize information literacy and understanding …
