Impact Of Energy Consumption On Poverty Reduction In Africa, Innocent Okwanya, Patricia O. Abah Jun 2018

Impact Of Energy Consumption On Poverty Reduction In Africa, Innocent Okwanya, Patricia O. Abah

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study investigates the impact of energy consumption on poverty reduction in a panel of 12 African countries over a period of 1981-2014. Using the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) method, the study shows that a long-run negative relationship exists between energy consumption and poverty level, which underscores the importance of energy in poverty reduction in the selected African countries. The result also indicates that other variables such as capital stock and political stability have significant effect on poverty implying that these factors play critical role in reducing poverty. Furthermore, the granger causality test shows that a short-run unidirectional …

Incorporating Diegetic Elements To Increase Engagement In Games For Engineering Education, Katherine Smith, Yuzhong Shen, Anthony W. Dean Jun 2018

Incorporating Diegetic Elements To Increase Engagement In Games For Engineering Education, Katherine Smith, Yuzhong Shen, Anthony W. Dean

VMASC Publications

One of the difficulties in developing educational games is maintaining player engagement. This engagement is critical for games to provide effective learning experiences. One way to increase engagement in games is to limit interruptions during game play. In educational games, this can be accomplished by incorporating learning or problem-solving elements diegetically. Diegetic elements are those that are part of the game scene. With this in mind, a series of games for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has been developed focusing on content in courses that are prerequisites to the engineering curriculum. These games cover topics in pre-calculus, calculus, …

VMASC Publications

In this paper, we propose a sentiment-based approach to investigate the temporal and spatiotemporal effects on tourists' emotions when visiting a city's tourist destinations. Our approach consists of four steps: data collection and preprocessing from social media; visitor origin identification; visit sentiment identification; and temporal and spatiotemporal analysis. The temporal and spatiotemporal dimensions include day of the year, season of the year, day of the week, location sentiment progression, enjoyment measure, and multi-location sentiment progression. We apply this approach to the city of Chicago using over eight million tweets. Results show that seasonal weather, as well as special days and …

“That's How She Talks”: Animating Text Message Evidence In The Sexual Assault Trial, Heather R. Hlavka, Sameena A. Mulla

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This ethnographic study of criminal sexual assault adjudication shows how prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witnesses animate text message evidence. In contrast to other forms of courtroom testimony, text messages function as multiauthored representations of recorded correspondence in the past. Attorneys and witnesses animate texts authored by or said to characterize persons represented at trial. By whom and how the texts are animated shapes trial processes. Through a detailed comparative case analysis of two Milwaukee, WI, sexual assault trials, this article attends to the process by which text messages are said to personify or characterize authors’ meaning and intent. This animation …

One out of every six American women has been the victim of a sexual assault in their lifetime. However, the DNA casework backlog continues to increase outpacing the nation's capacity since DNA evidence processing in sexual assault casework remains a bottleneck due to laborious and time‐consuming differential extraction of victim's and perpetrator's cells. Additionally, a significant amount (60–90%) of male DNA evidence may be lost with existing procedures. Here, a microfluidic method is developed that selectively captures sperm using a unique oligosaccharide sequence (Sialyl‐LewisX), a major carbohydrate ligand for sperm‐egg binding. This method is validated with forensic mock samples dating …

Abnormal Beta And Gamma Frequency Neural Oscillations Mediate Auditory Gating In Schizophrenia, Ann Tram Nguyen Jun 2018

Abnormal Beta And Gamma Frequency Neural Oscillations Mediate Auditory Gating In Schizophrenia, Ann Tram Nguyen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Sensory gating is a process in which the brain’s response to irrelevant and repetitive stimuli is inhibited. Poor P50 gating in those with schizophrenia is typically measured by the ratio or difference score of the event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes in response to a paired click paradigm. Failure to suppress the ERP in response to the second click is thought to reflect a faulty inhibitory system. Oscillatory activity during the inter-click interval in the beta (20-30 Hz) and gamma (30-50 Hz) frequency bands may reflect inhibitory processes initiated by the first click. Paired-auditory stimuli were presented to 131 participants with schizophrenia …

African Americans Navigating Through Relationships Towards Marriage: A Grounded Theory Study, Moosgar Yrveens Borieux Jun 2018

African Americans Navigating Through Relationships Towards Marriage: A Grounded Theory Study, Moosgar Yrveens Borieux

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore if and how early parent-participant relationships affect subsequent intimate relationships among African American couples. Given the clear gap between African Americans’ attitudes about marriage and the data that show them to be the least likely to be married among other racial or ethnic groups in the United States of America, a unique conceptualization [Life Course Developmental framework, Object Relations theory, Symbolic Interactionism perspective] was used to explore the role that early key figure-child social interactions potentially have in influencing young African Americans interactions with their significant others. To carry out the research …

From Homelessness Toward Self-Sufficiency: A Longitudinal Study Of Families, Elsie S. Lobo Jun 2018

From Homelessness Toward Self-Sufficiency: A Longitudinal Study Of Families, Elsie S. Lobo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Family homelessness is a serious concern in the United States. Recognizing this, increased efforts have been put into housing families through various rapid rehousing initiatives. Little is known, however, about effectively supporting families to transition from these temporary housing programs to sustainable self-sufficiency (Cunningham, Gillespie, & Anderson, 2015). This dissertation is a community-engaged study that examines the needs and experiences of families over time in the No Child Left Unsheltered (NCLU) program, operated by the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino (HACSB). It uses a mixed-methods, longitudinal design to capture the experiences and needs of families over a …

Neurocognitive And Psychosocial Effects Of Repeated Concussions In Children And Adolescents, Shina Halavi Jun 2018

Neurocognitive And Psychosocial Effects Of Repeated Concussions In Children And Adolescents, Shina Halavi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the United States, an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) annually. About 75% of these TBIs are mild, which are referred to as “concussions.” This study assessed the neurocognitive and psychosocial effects of repeated concussions in children and adolescents and their interactions with age and gender. It also assessed the correlation between psychosocial functioning and neurocognitive functioning. Given the paucity of research on the effects of concussion in the developing brain, the current study characterized the neurocognitive and psychosocial effects of concussion in young populations. The overarching hypothesis stated that repeated concussions would induce more …

Risk Markers Associated With Caregiver Elder Abuse: A Meta-Analytic Study, Annie Johansson Jun 2018

Risk Markers Associated With Caregiver Elder Abuse: A Meta-Analytic Study, Annie Johansson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Elder abuse is a significant public health problem affecting approximately 10% of the US population, with international prevalence rates ranging from 3% to 30% (e.g. Burnes et al., 2015; Melchiorre, Penhale, & Lamura, 2014; Roepke-Buehler & Dong, 2015; Selwood, Cooper, & Livingston, 2007). A quantitative meta-analysis was performed to assess risk markers associated with caregivers who abuse the elderly. This dissertation will identify background information specific to this study, discuss specific objectives of the study, and explain the rationale for why this study is being done. Two theoretical frameworks will be discussed and linked with caregiver elder abuse: Bronfenbrenner’s ecological …

Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4-Revised In Asian Americans, Dean Lim Jun 2018

Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4-Revised In Asian Americans, Dean Lim

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prior research has indicated that the prevalence of eating disorders, which are recognized as one of most lethal psychological disorders with an approximately 20% mortality rate, are increasing among Asian Americans with rates comparable to those of the general population in the United States. However, research has also suggested that Asian Americans may not be fully reporting symptoms related to eating disorders because of sociocultural stigma and the desire to uphold cultural values, such as interdependence, harmony within the community, humility, and emotional restraint. The SATAQ-4R is a widely-used measure of sociocultural influences on body image and eating disturbance, which …

Using A Model To Design Activity-Based Educational Experiences To Improve Cultural Competency Among Graduate Students, Yeon Bai, Kathleen D. Bauer Jun 2018

Using A Model To Design Activity-Based Educational Experiences To Improve Cultural Competency Among Graduate Students, Yeon Bai, Kathleen D. Bauer

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

To improve the cultural competency of 34 students participating in graduate nutrition counseling classes, the Campinha-Bacote Model of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Health Care Services was used to design, implement, and evaluate counseling classes. Each assignment and activity addressed one or more of the five constructs of the model, i.e., knowledge, skill, desire, encounters, and awareness. A repeated measure ANOVA evaluated pre- and post-test cultural competence scores (Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among Healthcare Professionals). The overall cultural competence score significantly improved (p < 0.001) from “culturally aware” (68.7 at pre-test) to “culturally competent” (78.7 at post-test). Students significantly improved (p < 0.001) in four constructs of the model including awareness, knowledge, skill, and encounter. Factor analysis indicated that course activities accounted for 83.2% and course assignments accounted for 74.6% of the total variance of cultural competence. An activity-based counseling course encouraging self-evaluation and reflection and addressing Model constructs significantly improved the cultural competence of students. As class activities and assignments aligned well with the Campinha-Bacote Model constructs, the findings of this study can help guide health educators to design effective cultural competence training and education programs.

University Ambassador Tour Structure: Applied With The College Of Agriculture, Food And Environmental Sciences, Haley Rose Warner Jun 2018

University Ambassador Tour Structure: Applied With The College Of Agriculture, Food And Environmental Sciences, Haley Rose Warner

Agricultural Education and Communication

College campus tours are an extremely important process to making a selection for where students will attend college. In fact, it has been concluded that campus tours are the most influential part of a students’ college decision (Cohen, 2009). A campus tour allows students to experience aesthetics of the campus environment, community of campus and personal interactions (Okerson, 2016). Although students who participate in a campus tour are twice as likely to attend the university they visited, students do not always choose the university they toured, but do leave with a better understanding about the institution and what they offer …

Deconstructing Negative Stereotypes, Myths And Microaggressions About Black Women: Reconstructing Black Women’S Narrative, Identity And The Empowering Nature Of Ethnic Identity, Patricia Luckoo

Dissertations

This research study retraces the lives of Black women in America through a microscope that emphasize the historical formulation of Black women's identity and how the distorted figures of stereotypes have emerged and manifested into contemporary microaggressions. The work explores two central inquiries: The first, quantitative study, examines slavery as the malignant marker that has shaped Black women's identity, socioeconomic status, educational progress and political frameworks. The study theorizes that microaggressions towards Black women pose serious harm to their overall psychological sense of self-efficacy and empowerment. However, ethnic identity has within it the resource to combat microaggressive attitudes. The second, …
