Management Of Residual Explosive Remnants Of War In Cambodia Report, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

In post-conflict countries, there will always be some risk from residual ERW threats when construction is undertaken, as witnessed by ongoing efforts to manage risk from UXO in Europe. Investing in Infrastructure (3i)6 is a development project funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and managed by Palladium International, to provide support for the development of small-scale infrastructure in Cambodia. It is a private-public partnership that seeks to incentivise the Cambodian private sector in the provision of such infrastructure, through the provision of “output-based grants, currently for the provision of electricity and drinking water networks.

Δ-9-Thc Effect On The Dopamine Transporter, Brooke E. Nielsen Jun 2018

Δ-9-Thc Effect On The Dopamine Transporter, Brooke E. Nielsen

Student Theses

Understanding the mechanism behind drugs of abuse is one of the key elements to understanding why addiction is so prevalent in society. The goal of this research was to determine the effect that a popular cannabinoid, Δ -9-tetrahydrocannabinol has on the regulation of dopamine neurotransmitter in the synapses. It was hypothesized that the addictive high users experience from using Δ-9-THC had a direct effect on lowering the dopamine transporter protein on cell surface causing a buildup of dopamine in the synapse. The results of the study show that the higher concentration of Δ-9-THC that the cells were exposed to caused …

International Trade, Trade Policy, And The Wto, Wei Jin Jun 2018

International Trade, Trade Policy, And The Wto, Wei Jin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation comprises three papers that study the welfare impact of GATT/WTO, the effects of preference bias on trade flows and welfare, and the optimal trade policy with strategic interactions under a Ricardian model. The first chapter provides a comprehensive evaluation of the welfare impact of GATT/WTO in its entire history of 1950-2015 for 180 countries. The analysis embeds non-parametric matching methods in structural quantitative simulations. The results indicate substantial (but highly heterogeneous) welfare gains created by GATT/WTO at the global level and across more than six decades of its history. An extensive set of robustness checks with respect to …

Macroeconomic Implications Of Trade Diversification In Nigeria, Lukman O. Oyelami, Philip O. Alege Jun 2018

Macroeconomic Implications Of Trade Diversification In Nigeria, Lukman O. Oyelami, Philip O. Alege

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study seeks to examine the effects of trade diversification on macroeconomic performance in Nigeria. To achieve this, the study employs bound test of ARDL to determine the existence of cointegration between trade diversification and key macroeconomic variables. We further estimate the short-run and long-run effects of Intensive and Extensive trade diversification on Economic growth and exchange rate movements. The results from bound tests confirm co-integration between trade diversification and economic growth on one hand and trade diversification and exchange rate movements on the other hand. Similarly, the results from our estimations show that trade diversification can propel economic growth …

Estimating And Forecasting The Impact Of Inflation On Economic Growth In Nigeria Using Threshold Analysis, David O.K. Okoroafor, Sesan O. Adeniji, Timilehin Olasehinde Jun 2018

Estimating And Forecasting The Impact Of Inflation On Economic Growth In Nigeria Using Threshold Analysis, David O.K. Okoroafor, Sesan O. Adeniji, Timilehin Olasehinde

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examined the causal relationship between inflation and economic growth as well as estimating threshold and forecasting of inflation in Nigeria for the period of 1961 – 2016. The study employed Granger causality test, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL), Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and a multivariate time series Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models. Granger causality test result showed that inflation does not granger cause economic growth and neither does economic growth granger cause inflation during the period of study. Using broad money supply to GDP as control variable, an inflation threshold of 14% -15% both in the short run and …

A Reassessment Of Money Demand In Nigeria, Moses K. Tule, Usman M. Okpanachi, Patrick Ogiji Jun 2018

A Reassessment Of Money Demand In Nigeria, Moses K. Tule, Usman M. Okpanachi, Patrick Ogiji

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper re-examines broad money (M2) demand and its stability in Nigeria using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing procedure. First, the results indicate that a stable long-run relationship exists between M2 and its determinants including GDP, stock prices, foreign interest rates and real exchange rate. Furthermore, stock prices showed a significant and positive effect on the long-run broad money demand, which in some ways reflect increased ‘financialization’3 and integration of the Nigerian economy into the global economic system. Overall, the findings of this study lend credence to the continued relevance of the broad money aggregate, M2, as a …

Modelling Volatility Persistence And Asymmetry Of Naira-Dollar Exchange Rate, Mutiu A. Oyinlola Jun 2018

Modelling Volatility Persistence And Asymmetry Of Naira-Dollar Exchange Rate, Mutiu A. Oyinlola

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper modelled the volatility persistence and asymmetry of naira-dollar exchange rate in interbank and Bureau de Change (BDC) using monthly data between January 2004 and November 2017. The study employed Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity [GARCH (1,1)], Threshold GARCH [TGARCH (1,1)] and Exponential GARCH [EGARCH (1,1)]. The results of Bai-Perron (2003) structural break identified two significant breaks in each market. Interestingly, the breaks, particularly for the interbank exchange rate(December, 2014 and January, 2015), seem to have coincided with the period of depreciation in the country’s exchange rate which could be linked to the precipitous movement in the international crude oil …

Being Vicariously Criminal: Sherlock Holmes' Dualistic Nature As A Placebo For Degeneracy, Elizabeth Fisher Jun 2018

Being Vicariously Criminal: Sherlock Holmes' Dualistic Nature As A Placebo For Degeneracy, Elizabeth Fisher

Masters Theses

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a fear of degeneracy, or breakdown of social, cultural and moral understandings, was spreading through late-Victorian England. With the rise of a growing middle class in late-Victorian England, and the increased opportunities for self-improvement, the distinct class lines that separated the upper class from the middle and lower classes in society started to break down. As the class boundaries that had been in place for so long were dissolving, the criminal activities that had previously been relegated to the lower classes were spreading across those increasingly blurred class lines. The concept of …

Collections As Data: Implications For Enclosure, Thomas G. Padilla Jun 2018

Collections As Data: Implications For Enclosure, Thomas G. Padilla

Library Faculty Research

In recent years a growing amount of interest has been dedicated to collections as data. A collections as data paradigm seeks to foster an expanded set of research, pedagogical, and artistic potential predicated on the computational use of cultural heritage collections. Collections as data raises the question of what it might mean to treat digitized and born digital collections as data rather than simple surrogates of physical objects or static representations of digital experience.

Programming In Restrictive Housing: Considerations For Improving Outcome Evaluations, H. Daniel Butler, Starr Solomon, Ryan E. Spohn Jun 2018

Programming In Restrictive Housing: Considerations For Improving Outcome Evaluations, H. Daniel Butler, Starr Solomon, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

A number of studies have identified “what works” in regard to the successful implementation of correctional programming over the past several decades. Few studies, however, have examined the complexities associated with programming in restrictive housing. Using data from a Midwestern department of corrections, we examined whether the provision of programming in restrictive housing achieved desired outcomes (e.g., reductions in inmate misconduct). The findings revealed the amount of time served in restrictive housing and confinement in different types of restrictive housing may influence estimations of a treatment effect. As a growing number of states seek to reform the use of restrictive …

Life Starts At Home: Exploring How Housing Impacts Participation For People With Disabilities, Rtc: Rural, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Modern perspectives of disability focus on the impact of the environment on the participation and independence of people with disabilities. The interaction between a person and their surroundings can either support or inhibit their functional needs to live independently and participate in the community (World Health Organization). RTC:Rural research on housing and ecology indicates that increasing the availability of accessible and usable housing is a significant step toward building greater community participation and independent living for all. Accessibility and usability issues within the home can present barriers to daily living that negatively impact an individual’s ability to participate in their …

Informing Social Impact: Enabling Everyday Changemakers Through Research, Marissa Getts Jun 2018

Informing Social Impact: Enabling Everyday Changemakers Through Research, Marissa Getts

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Despite a lack of expertise regarding social impact, laypeople make many important decisions about social good by starting or supporting organizations or social businesses, voting for or against legislation and policymakers, or spending their money and time on volunteering or service trips. Unfortunately, many people base their interventions or analysis of interventions for any given social issue on overly simplistic understanding or incorrect information regarding social impact. This keeps them from developing interventions with positive, sustainable impact. Ballard Brief is a publication based on a framework intended to inform the layperson about social issues and interventions.

This thesis is comprised …

Exploring Millennials’ Motives In Media Class Preferences: Advertising Implications, Alexandra Hutto, W. Wossen Kassaye

International Review of Business and Economics

Millennials have become a preoccupation for marketers, especially as they enter their peak earning and spending life stages. This exploratory study represents a touchstone to the motivations, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors members of the millennial cohort, those born between 1980-2000, exhibited toward three major media classes (print, broadcast, and Internet). Forty-one millennials participated in a series of synchronous online focus groups administered through a learning management system (LMS), or focus group chats (FGCs) for short. This study compares millennials’ views toward traditional media (namely, television and newspapers) against the Internet with an emphasis on perceived advantages and disadvantages of each …

An Empirical Study Of Elasticity Of Employment Generated In Micro, Small And Medium Manufacturing Enterprises (Manufacturing Msmes) In India, Nihar Ranjan Jena, Lina R. Thatte

International Review of Business and Economics

World over SMEs are playing a major role in the sphere of socio-economic enhancement of lives of millions. In India, the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) contribute 8 per cent to the country’s GDP, 45 per cent to the manufactured output and 40 per cent to the country’s exports. They provide employment to 101 million people through 45 million enterprises. As an employment generator, MSMEs are the second largest employment opportunity provider only behind the agriculture sector. The MSMEs also act as a catalyst for social change by helping reduce the income inequality among various social classes as also …

Exploring The Technological Frontier To Fuel Future Growth: Charting India’S Trajectory For Coming Decades, Abhith Pallegar

International Review of Business and Economics

The paper aims to discuss the world of fast-paced technology from a Darwinian standpoint and examines the technological choices made by countries and the impact of such choices on their economic growth. The paper explores how a country’s economic growth is dependent on the strategic technological choices they make. By clubbing together the fate of countries and companies, we intend to simplify the narrative and explore a few key aspects such as the diminishing relevance of competitive behavior and ways of adapting to and adopting new technologies to become an evolutionary driver in a technology-centric world. Foreign Aid Effectiveness In Ghana, Yaya Sissoko, Niloufer Sohrabji Jun 2018

Foreign Aid Effectiveness In Ghana, Yaya Sissoko, Niloufer Sohrabji

International Review of Business and Economics

Ghana has been the recipient of large levels of aid since the 1980s. This coincides with significant improvements in the country including increased growth and poverty reduction. We analyze the role of foreign aid in Ghana’s success. Using annual data from 1961 to 2012, we employ an error correction model to estimate the long-run relationship between aid and conditional aid in Ghana’s economic growth. We find that conditional aid has a positive and statistically significant impact on growth. Through an examination of Ghana over three phases with varying aid and conditionality, we conclude that Ghana’s success with conditional aid is …

Beyond Fragility: Syria And The Challenges Of Reconstruction In Fierce States, Steven Heydemann Jun 2018

Beyond Fragility: Syria And The Challenges Of Reconstruction In Fierce States, Steven Heydemann

Middle East Studies: Faculty Publications

Beginning as early as 2012, the Bashar Assad regime in Syria has worked to put in place the legal and regulatory authorities to implement an ambitious vision of reconstruction as a process of authoritarian stabilization. With its military victory close at hand, the regime’s intent is to use reconstruction to reimpose its authority, tighten its control over Syria’s society and economy, and fundamentally alter Syria’s demography to achieve what Assad himself has characterized as a “healthier and more homogenous society.”

The odds that it will achieve these aims are high. Contrary to views of the Assad regimeas too severely weakened …

Perspectives On Aging Among Graduate Social Work Students: Using Photographs As An Online Pedagogical Activity, Jill M. Chonody

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The United States is experiencing an aging of the population, and by 2030, 20% of Americans will be 65 years or older (Federal Interagency Forum, 2010). However, for many helping professions, including social work, medicine, and nursing, student interest in gerontological practice is quite low. One international study found that only 5.4% of the more than 1,000 social work students who were surveyed indicated that working with older people was their primary area of interest (Chonody & Wang, 2014). Finding ways to improve student interest and break down biases against older adults is essential to improve student interest, and incorporating …

The ritual of tailgating is a staple of college football Saturdays, particularly for fans of teams in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Fan traditions help infuse pregame gatherings around the stadiums with team spirit, as fans frequently theme their food and drink to represent their chosen team. New social media platforms—particularly photo-sharing platforms such as Instagram—have taken tailgates to the virtual space. Through interviews with participants who partake in the phenomenon, this study sought to ascertain what fans of SEC teams gain from the process of social media participation. Utilizing the critical framework of symbolic interactionism, this exploratory study examines meaning …
