An Inferential Method For Determining Which Of Two Independent Variables Is Most Important When There Is Curvature, Rand Wilcox
An Inferential Method For Determining Which Of Two Independent Variables Is Most Important When There Is Curvature, Rand Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Consider three random variables Y, X1 and X2, where the typical value of Y, given X1 and X2, is given by some unknown function m(X1, X2). A goal is to determine which of the two independent variables is most important when both variables are included in the model. Let τ1 denote the strength of the association associated with Y and X1, when X2 is included in the model, and let τ2 be defined in an analogous manner. If it is assumed …

Sample Size For Non-Inferiority Tests For One Proportion: A Simulation Study, Özlem Güllü, Mustafa Agah Tekindal
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The objective of non-inferiority trials is to demonstrate the efficiency of a novel treatment whether it is acceptably less or more efficient than a control or active (existing) treatment. They are employed in situations where, when compared to the active treatment, the novel treatment is to be advantageous with higher rates of reliability, compatibility, cost-efficiency, etc. Odds ratio is the most significant measure used in investigating the size of efficiency of treatments relative to one another. The purpose of the study is to calculate and evaluate the sample size under different scenarios based on three different test statistics in non-inferiority …

Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen
Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
At the present time, U.S. regional economic development policies tend to be focused on sectors, infrastructure, human capital, innovation capability, or to be problem oriented, and only a few programs can be described as being place-based. In this paper, we are looking at major federal regional development programs to deduce their combined implicit place-based goals and objectives. Because the U.S. seems to be relatively unique among OECD countries in its scant use of place-based policies, we compare the United States to, in particular, Canada to gain further insights into the reasons for and potential effects of such policy differences.
Western Washington Elk-Hunting: Analyzing Willingness To Pay And Economic Benefits, Alex Donka
Western Washington Elk-Hunting: Analyzing Willingness To Pay And Economic Benefits, Alex Donka
Honors Projects
This study will attempt to establish an estimate of willingness to pay for elk hunted in Western Washington, with the intent of informing policymakers on the potential economic benefit of elk hunting in the state. The research uses travel cost analysis to estimate variable cost associated with hunting, and controls for macroeconomic fluctuations in hunting demand as well as quality metrics for the specific GMUs in question. The study found that expected willingness to pay for an elk hunting trip in 2013-2015 was approximately $140, which is a lower-bound estimation of expenditures and hunter utility. The study’s findings support the …
Book Review: Courtrooms And Classrooms: A Legal History Of College Access, 1860-1960, Mark A. Addison
Book Review: Courtrooms And Classrooms: A Legal History Of College Access, 1860-1960, Mark A. Addison
Journal of College Access
Issues of college access are increasingly met with resolutions within social and economic contexts. Models such as cost of production output, and race and socioeconomic-conscious strategies form the basis of such analyses (Jenkins & Rodriguez, 2013; Henriksen, 1995; Treager Huber, 2010; Schmidt, 2012). We can expect retooling and reinventing of such models with increasing college costs and changes in student demographics.

Injection Partners, Hcv, And Hiv Status Among Rural Persons Who Inject Drugs In Puerto Rico, Patrick Habecker, Roberto Abadie, Melissa L. Welch-Lazoritz, Juan Carlos Reyes, Bilal Khan, Kirk Dombrowski
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Background—The prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV among persons who inject drugs (PWID) and the ability of these diseases to spread through injection networks are well documented in urban areas. However, less is known about injection behaviors in rural areas.
Objectives—This study focuses on the association between the number of self-reported injection partners with the PWID’s self-reported HCV and HIV status. Injection networks provide paths for infection and information to flow, and are important to consider when developing prevention and intervention strategies.
Methods—Respondent driven sampling was used to conduct 315 interviews with PWID in rural Puerto Rico during 2015. …
Addressing Women And Minorities On Social Media By The 2016 U.S. Presidential Candidates, Mandi Bates Bailey, Steven P. Nawara
Addressing Women And Minorities On Social Media By The 2016 U.S. Presidential Candidates, Mandi Bates Bailey, Steven P. Nawara
Political Science Department Faculty Articles
Donald Trump’s bombastic statements regarding women and minorities were a constant theme in the 2016 presidential election and attracted attention from both the mainstream media and his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Given the increasing use of social networking sites among political actors and the public, as well as the focus given to women and minorities in the 2016 election, we utilize a content analysis of presidential candidates’ social media activity in the months preceding the election in order to better understand how the candidates addressed women and minorities. We ultimately find that Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton out-posted Trump in both positive …
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
U.S. manufacturing experienced a precipitous and historically unprecedented decline in employment in the 2000s. Many economists and other analysts—pointing to decades of statistics showing that manufacturing real (inflation-adjusted) output growth has largely kept pace with private sector real output growth, that productivity growth has been much higher, and that the sector’s share of aggregate employment has been declining—argue that manufacturing’s job losses are largely the result of productivity growth (assumed to reflect automation) and are part of a long-term trend. Since the 1980s, however, the apparently robust growth in manufacturing real output and productivity have been driven by a relatively …

Reconsidering Policy Barriers For Justice-Involved College Students, Bradley D. Custer
Reconsidering Policy Barriers For Justice-Involved College Students, Bradley D. Custer
Journal of College Access
Student affairs professionals are concerned about the access and success of diverse groups of students in U.S. higher education, but systematic barriers continue to confront one understudied population of college students. Justice-involved people–those who have experienced the criminal justice system–face unique challenges on our campuses but are often ignored in discussions of access, retention, and success. To raise awareness about the barriers these student face, this paper offers a descriptive examination of the federal, state, and institutional policies that target justice-involved college students, including policies related to admissions, financial aid, campus housing, student employment, student athletics, and others. Analysis suggests …

Preparing Students Experiencing Homelessness For College: Considerations For Counselors And Other Supportive Personnel, Stacey A. Havlik, Carrie Sanders, Emma Wilson
Journal of College Access
This article describes the unique college and career preparation challenges faced by students experiencing homelessness (SEH), framed using a Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) lens. The experience of homelessness presents barriers for secondary students, which can impact their college self-efficacy, outcome expectations of attending and succeeding in college, and goal setting towards college. In this conceptual paper, background on homelessness and research related to the college planning process of SEH is provided, as well as implications for school and career counselors, as well as other educators.

Exercising Research Skills: An Information Literacy Boot Camp For Religious Studies Graduate Assistants, Stephanie Shreffler, Heidi Gauder
Exercising Research Skills: An Information Literacy Boot Camp For Religious Studies Graduate Assistants, Stephanie Shreffler, Heidi Gauder
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
Instructional librarians at the University of Dayton collaborated with a religious studies graduate program to offer a three-day information literacy workshop, or “boot camp,” to the program's graduate research assistants. The graduate program had found that the assistants' research skills did not meet the expectations of their faculty mentors, and the workshop sought to address these deficiencies. With input from the religious studies faculty, the workshop focused on catalog and database searching, Boolean logic, primary sources, and the Chicago citation style. The librarians incorporated active learning exercises into each workshop session. Assessment of the workshop suggested that the assistants gained …

Domestic Economic Freedom And Regional Integration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brevin Anderson
Domestic Economic Freedom And Regional Integration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brevin Anderson
Honors Projects
This paper examines the relationship between policies facilitating domestic economic freedom in Sub-Saharan African states and the degree of regional integration of those states into their respective regional economic communities. It conducts a linear regression analysis with data from the Economic Freedom of the World Report 2017 and the AFRICA Regional Integration Index to conduct a quantitative study of Sub-Saharan African states. The regression finds strong evidence that domestic economic freedom is a significant contributing factor, between 5% and 15% causality, to a state’s degree of regional integration. The paper hypothesizes that private sector political and economic activity is the …

A Cry And An Outcry: Oplakvane (Complaining) As A Term For Communication Practice, Nadezhda Sotirova
Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications
This study examined the term oplakvane in Bulgarian discourse. It refers to a communication practice – similar to complaining – and a range of associated cultural meanings for ways to construct a socio-economic and political reality. Data for this study included naturally occurring talk recorded during social events, interview responses from 50 participants, and a range of media postings from newspapers and online sources. These were examined through the lens of ethnography of communication and studies of terms for talk. By examining the term's context, potency, use, messages, meanings, and enactments, a larger cultural landscape is made available, illustrating how …

The Dispute Over The Commons: Seed And Food Sovereignty As Decommodification In Chiapas, Mexico, Carol Frances HernáNdez RodríGuez
Dissertations and Theses
Seeds have become one of the most contested resources in our society. Control over seeds has intensified under neoliberalism, and today four large multinational corporations control approximately 70 percent of the global seed market. In response to this concentration of corporate power, an international social movement has emerged around the concept of seed sovereignty, which reclaims seeds and biodiversity as commons and public goods. This study examines the relationship between the global dynamics of commodification and enclosure of seeds, and the seed sovereignty countermovement for decommodification. I approach this analysis through an ethnographic case study of one local seed sovereignty …

Validation Of Twitter Opinion Trends With National Polling Aggregates: Hillary Clinton Vs Donald Trump, Alexandre Bovet, Flaviano Morone, Hernán A. Makse
Publications and Research
Measuring and forecasting opinion trends from real-time social media is a long-standing goal of bigdata analytics. Despite the large amount of work addressing this question, there has been no clear validation of online social media opinion trend with traditional surveys. Here we develop a method to infer the opinion of Twitter users by using a combination of statistical physics of complex networks and machine learning based on hashtags co-occurrence to build an in-domain training set of the order of a million tweets. We validate our method in the context of 2016 US Presidential Election by comparing the Twitter opinion trend …
