Onthemap: Finding Labor Pools And Potential Customers With Longitudinal Data, David Schuler
South Dakota Demography Conference
This session will introduce Census Bureau’s OnTheMap application. The OnTheMap application is an interactive web-based tool that visualizes Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) data. Users may extract counts of jobs and workers and information about workers’ inflow and outflow patterns for areas as small as a census block. A live demonstration of how to use the application will be provided.

For our service learning project, our group decided to make dog treats and sell them to raise money for the local animal shelter. On the side of making dog treats, we also accepted blanket donations and cash donations. It was more difficult than anticipated to sell the dog treats but we eventually did it and raise around $70 for the animal shelter to use to keep the animals warm and healthy through the winter. There were challenges in the beginning trying to meet up with everybody and assign specific duties to group members but overall we were successful and learned …

The Census That Almost Wasn’T: The Contentious Politics Of Census 2021 In Great Britain, Patricia Ahmed
The Census That Almost Wasn’T: The Contentious Politics Of Census 2021 In Great Britain, Patricia Ahmed
South Dakota Demography Conference
There is a growing movement in Great Britain to abolish the census. This development was spearheaded by conservative politicians, who argued that the census was both prohibitively expensive (Maude 2014) and a violation of citizens’ privacy rights (Dorling 2013:6). Other Anti-Census activists argued that data could be gathered from various local agencies could be gathered and aggregated, in much more streamlined and cost effective process. Although key stakeholders in academia, local government, and civil society vigorously fought these proposals, the census's existence in the UK remains distinctively in doubt. Ultimately, a compromise was reached: the 2021 census will be given, …

Sdi And South Dakota: The Digital Transformation, Danielle Gutherie
South Dakota Demography Conference
The State of South Dakota has incorporated GIS in a wide range of agency applications over the years. The current implementation of GIS in the State ranges from geoprocessing by environmental scientist to providing complex data in an easy to understand format for the general public. Currently the demand for GIS functionality has precipitated the State’s SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) to rapidly grow in depth and breadth. This expansion, although not complete, has had a huge impact in the improvement of data entry, improved data validation, and a more open and transparent government.

Literature Review: Hydropower And Iceland's Environment, Olivia Villamagna
Literature Review: Hydropower And Iceland's Environment, Olivia Villamagna
Student Works
This paper seeks to answer the question: To what extent do hydropower plants affect the surrounding environment? Through a literature review and personal accounts found on blogs and website articles, there were many conclusions that came from this research. A review of the literature indicated that use of hydropower influences the ecology around the plant. The power plant’s redirection of the river's water flow and reservoir submergence cause many problems for the surrounding environments. Hydropower plants can change the landscape due to the fact that the water they use is no longer providing the right nutrients to the previously flourishing …
Iceland’S Renewable Energy Sources & Climate Change, Daniel Roberts, Michael Conway
Iceland’S Renewable Energy Sources & Climate Change, Daniel Roberts, Michael Conway
Student Works
Nearly all of Iceland’s energy comes from renewable resources, with the majority being hydroelectric energy, and the remainder being geothermal. For several months undergraduate student researchers from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, aided by faculty from the Office of Undergraduate Research, conducted secondary-source research on the effect climate change has on Iceland’s renewable resources currently, and progressing throughout the century. Additionally, research was conducted on how the Icelandic Government plans on responding to these eminent changes. Earth's rising temperatures are causing a shrinkage of Iceland’s glaciers, and changing the water runoff from their glaciers at an alarming rate. Iceland’s dams are currently …

What Do We Know About In-Service Police Training? Results Of A Failed Systematic Review, Laura Huey
What Do We Know About In-Service Police Training? Results Of A Failed Systematic Review, Laura Huey
Sociology Publications
To learn more about what the social scientific research literature can tell us about ‘what works’ in the field of in-service police training, the author attempted to conduct a systematic review of the recent published research on this topic (2000-2015). After initially narrowing the search results to 21 studies, the review had to be abandoned because there was an insufficient number of studies on any one topic or training technique. The author reflects on what this failed review means from the standpoint of the possible economic and social costs of potentially ineffective and inefficient in-service training.

Patient navigation has expanded as a promising approach to improve cancer care coordination and patient adherence. This paper addresses the need to identify the evidence on the economic impact of patient navigation in colorectal cancer, following the Health Economic Evaluation Publication Guidelines. Articles indexed in Medline, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Web of Science between January 2000 and March 2017 were analyzed. We conducted a systematic review of the literature using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The quality assessment of the included studies was based on the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) checklist. Inclusion criteria …

The teaching librarian conducts a class session on finding and creating images to illustrate the manuals and teaches differences between using copyrighted and non-copyrighted images. The students work on finding images in the public domain, creating their own images, and incorporating copyrighted images via Creative Commons licenses and the principle of fair use. A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger
A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger
Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research
This study determines the nuclear pragmatic limit where the direct physical negative consequences of nuclear weapons use are counter to national interests, by assuming all unknowns are conservatively optimistic. The only effect considered is nuclear winter (“nuclear autumn” in the low weapons limits) and the resultant effects on the aggressor nation. First, the ability of low nuclear weapon limits is probed for maintaining deterrence in the worst-case scenario of attacking the most-populous nation. Second, the ability of aggressor nations to feed themselves is assessed without trade and industry resultant from a nuclear attack causing “nuclear autumn” (10% global agricultural shortfall). …
