The Relationship Between The Strong Black Woman Archetype And Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help In Intimate Partner Violence Relationships Among African American Women, Monica S. Young
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious issue that can affect not only women’s lives, but also their health (Wong & Mellor, 2014). Research has shown that the psychological effects of IPV can significantly influence women’s attitudes towards help-seeking, but, for Black women, the effects of racial discrimination can further complicate this. Research has also highlighted the underutilization of professional mental health services as an area of great concern in the African American communities. It is believed that some of the reluctance on the part of African American women to seek services for themselves is deeply rooted in the historical …
Is The Montessori Method A Solution To Improve Public Education? Comparing Two Pedagogical Models In Urban Schools, Iwona Beata Franczak
Is The Montessori Method A Solution To Improve Public Education? Comparing Two Pedagogical Models In Urban Schools, Iwona Beata Franczak
Theses and Dissertations
Education is one of the most important social institutions that can improve quality of life. While our schools, ostensibly, provide for equal education for all, they differ in their curricula and resources that ultimately impact the quality of learning experiences. Distinguished educational organizations emphasize the need to implement our curricula with constructivist pedagogy. Montessori is a holistic educational model that embraces this approach. While studies show that Montessori methods provide positive outcomes for students, these studies are largely limited to performance of students attending private schools. The purpose of this work is to examine the effectiveness of public conventional and …
Attentional Deployment, Cognitive Control, And Reappraisal In Schizophrenia, Kyle Robert Mitchell
Attentional Deployment, Cognitive Control, And Reappraisal In Schizophrenia, Kyle Robert Mitchell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent studies posit that deficits in emotion regulation may lead to increased negative emotional experience in schizophrenia. While individuals with schizophrenia evidence a number of abnormalities in emotion regulation, it is unclear whether these deficits are discrete or related; furthermore, the mechanisms underlying these deficits are not clear. Cognitive control has been posited as an important mechanism supporting emotion regulation. The current study examined the relationship between attentional deployment and both lexical and self-reported indices of reappraisal, as well as the mediating role of cognitive control on this relationship in a sample of 22 individuals with psychotic disorders. A novel …

Msw Interns At Public Libraries: Fostering Collaboration For Change, Sarah C. Johnson
Publications and Research
While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians continues to grow, literature about the utilization of student social workers partnering with libraries is non-existent. Currently 40,000 students are enrolled in M.S.W. programs through the United States and nearly all are required to complete approximately 900 hours "in the field." Such students provide untapped skills, knowledge, and values that can help take diversity in public libraries to the next level.
Social Media's Influence On Pre-Trial Publicity, Kelly Kondroski
Social Media's Influence On Pre-Trial Publicity, Kelly Kondroski
Student Theses
In an age where more and more people are turning to social media for news information it can only be concluded that those same people are vulnerable to some type of exposure to pretrial publicity. Research has supported the idea that pretrial publicity creates premature judgments of guilt towards the accused and the more exposure a person has on a case the more strongly their opinions of guilt tend to be. Social media has quickly become a platform that users turn to receive news information, including details about cases that are in process of going to trial. Because its high …

The Influence Of A Personal Values Intervention On Cold Pressor-Induced Distress Tolerance, Brooke M. Smith, Jennifer L. Villatte, Clarissa W. Ong, Grayson M. Butcher, Michael P. Twohig, Michael E. Levin, Steven C. Hayes
Psychology Faculty Publications
Research has demonstrated that values and acceptance interventions can increase distress tolerance, but the individual contribution of each remains unclear. The current study examined the isolated effect of a values intervention on immersion time in a cold pressor. Participants randomized to Values (n = 18) and Control (n = 14) conditions completed two cold pressor tasks, separated by a 30-minute values or control intervention. Immersion time increased 51.06 seconds for participants in the Values condition and decreased by 10.79 seconds for those in the Control condition. Increases in self-reported pain and distress predicted decreases in immersion time for Control, but …
What's New Pussyhat? Men, Feminism, And Social Identity, Rachel Lee Crist
What's New Pussyhat? Men, Feminism, And Social Identity, Rachel Lee Crist
Dissertations and Theses
Current understandings of feminism do not seek to dissuade men from feminism as a movement; moreover, men's inclusion in the feminist movement is seen as paramount to achieving equality and dismantling all forms of hegemonic power. Past research has shown that identification with a social movement is a strong predictor for participation in social change, more so than belonging to a disadvantaged social category. Despite this, there is nascent literature on how men define, identify as, and practice feminism. This study draws from a thematic analysis of three focus groups of self-identified males to investigate their self-identification as feminist. Using …

An Explanatory Study On The Non-Parametric Multivariate T2 Control Chart, Abdolrasoul Mostajeran, Nasrolah Iranpanah, Rassoul Noorossana
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Most control charts require the assumption of normal distribution for observations. When distribution is not normal, one can use non-parametric control charts such as sign control chart. A deficiency of such control charts could be the loss of information due to replacing an observation with its sign or rank. Furthermore, because the chart statistics of T2 are correlated, the T2 chart is not a desire performance. Non-parametric bootstrap algorithm could help to calculate control chart parameters using the original observations while no assumption regarding the distribution is needed. In this paper, first, a bootstrap multivariate control chart is …

Group And Organizational Safety Norms Set The Stage For Good Post-Fall Huddles, Joseph A. Allen, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Victoria Kennel, Katherine J. Jones
Psychology Faculty Publications
We explored group and organizational safety norms as antecedents to meeting leader behaviors and achievement of desired outcomes in a special after-action review case—a post-fall huddle. A longitudinal survey design was used to investigate the relationship between organizational/group safety norms, huddle leader behavior, and huddle meeting effectiveness. The sample included health care workers in critical access hospitals (N = 206) who completed a baseline safety norm assessment and an assessment of post-fall huddle experiences 3 to 6 months later. Findings indicate that organizational and group safety norms relate to perceived huddle meeting effectiveness through appropriate huddle leader behavior in a …

Evaluating Differences In Drink Refusal Training And Posttreatment Outcomes In Women In Individual Alcohol Treatment, Rosa Munoz
Psychology ETDs
This study sought to establish the topography of drink refusal behaviors clients engage in while undergoing manual-guided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). Prior research has demonstrated that clients who receive specific skills training on how to assertively refuse drinks are less likely to relapse. Behavioral coding has been used previously to explore in-session behaviors by both client and therapist. Using this methodology, a coding manual (Drink Refusal and Motivation-Alcohol; DRAM-A) was developed for the present study. We sought to explore the relationship between differential types of drink refusal behaviors uttered by clients receiving treatment for AUD …

Background: Women's status and empowerment influence health, nutrition, and socioeconomic status of women and their children. Despite its benefits, however, research on women's empowerment in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is limited in scope and geography. Empowerment is variably defined and data for comparison across regions is often limited. The objective of the current study was to identify domains of empowerment from a widely available data source, Demographic and Health Surveys, across multiple regions in SSA.
Methods: Demographic and Health Surveys from nineteen countries representing four African regions were used for the analysis. A total of 26 indicators across different dimensions (economic, …
The Effects Of Lds Pubic Affairs Campaigns On The Perception Of Mormonism From 2001-2015, Abby Eyre, John Waltz
The Effects Of Lds Pubic Affairs Campaigns On The Perception Of Mormonism From 2001-2015, Abby Eyre, John Waltz
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The French have found Mormons fascinating since 1860. Jules Verne depicted Mormons as utopian menaces in his 1863 novel Paris in the 20th Century1, French cartoonists illustrated polygamous and mixed-race Mormon couples as satire, and French outcasts occupied Nauvoo after the great Mormon exodus west. In the time since the early days of the American church, little changed regarding the perception of Mormons until the internet allowed real-time flow of information. My own experience as a missionary and as an intern in France piqued my interest in how French people viewed Mormons. I met people who had never …

Optimum Stratification In Bivariate Auxiliary Variables Under Neyman Allocation, Faizan Danish, S.E.H. Rizvi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In several situations complete data set of the study variable is unknown that becomes a stumbling block in various stratification techniques in order to obtain stratification points on two way stratification method. In this paper a technique has been proposed under Neyman allocation when the stratification is done oj the two auxiliary variable having one estimation variable under consideration. Due to complexities created by minimal equations approximate optimum strata boundaries has been obtained. Empirical study has been done to illustrate the proposed method when the auxiliary variables have standard Cauchy and power distributions.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and related intolerance celebrated in the city of Durban in 2001 was not the first international forum addressing the topic of racism in different countries of the world. However, it marked a pivotal before and after in the arena of racial politics in some countries of Latin America. With a special focus on indigenous communities and peoples of African descent, this international platform brought together governments, civil society organizations, and stakeholders alike urging them to recognize the pervasiveness of racism and racial discrimination in their countries. In the specific case of Peru, …
