What to do when designing a repository for an institution that doesn’t already have a predefined structure or taxonomy by which to organize or make ‘browsable’ your collections? Conference attendees who come from complex institutions without clearly set “Departments” will be interested to hear how Providence St Joseph Health (PSJH) created an organizational structure and taxonomy during the implementation of their Digital Commons IR. By considering existing classification schemes (LC and NLM), internal naming practices, and consulting small stakeholder focus groups PSJH is making their publications easily browsable by both internal and potential external users.

Get It Right: Applying Rights Statements To Digital Collections, Sue Kunda, Laura Buchholz

Northwest IR User Group

The Orbis Cascade Alliance’s move to standardize metadata across institutions will greatly enhance our ability to share digital collections across the Alliance and beyond. Perhaps no other fields, though, cause more consternation and confusion than the pair of rights statements required by the Alliance and the Digital Public Library of America.

This presentation will describe the work done by the Alliance's Dublin Core Best Practices Working Group to help member institutions assign standardized rights statements. Examples and explanations of why certain choices were made for both the url and free text statement will also be provided.

On The Bravery And Courage Of Heroes: Considering Gender, Elaine L. Kinsella, Timothy D. Ritchie, Eric R. Igou

Heroism Science

Heroes are frequently described as both brave and courageous. Each adjective is often used interchangeably in public and academic discourse, despite historical and philosophical differences in their meaning. While research about heroes and heroism is burgeoning, little work has yet to provide a detailed analysis of specific hero features; indeed, there is a need for greater precision in our terminology and conceptual analyses of heroism. In the present article, we focus on two features of heroism, bravery and courage, and critically parse these terms and the pervasive gender stereotypes that are associated with each. We aim to spark critical discussions …

A Theological Perspective On Heroic Leadership In The Context Of Followership And Servant Leadership, Deborah Robertson Jul 2018

A Theological Perspective On Heroic Leadership In The Context Of Followership And Servant Leadership, Deborah Robertson

Heroism Science

This article aims to bring a theological perspective to the concept of heroic leadership, specifically from a theology of leadership grounded in Christian social teaching, and with a focus on leadership in the workplace. A rationale for bringing a theological perspective to the exploration of heroic leadership within heroism science is provided, and there is discussion on the importance of followership in any dialogue about leadership, as well as the significance of servant leadership. It is argued that a Christian theology of leadership aligns closely with much of what is portrayed by a renewed heroic leadership in the areas of …

Implementing A Campus-Wide Oer Publishing Platform At Uc Berkeley, Maria Gould Jul 2018

Implementing A Campus-Wide Oer Publishing Platform At Uc Berkeley, Maria Gould

Northwest IR User Group

In April 2018, the UC Berkeley Library launched a campus-wide OER publishing platform to provide faculty, staff, and students with a simple and centralized portal for creating and finding OERs and other online works. Originating out of a multi-pronged approach to support and encourage course content affordability measures on campus, the publishing platform came about to address a specific need: while the Library had been incentivizing OER use through grants to faculty, we realized that we lacked an easy way to help people create them. In this presentation, I will share details and insights from our process so that other …

ResearchGate’s recent legal woes regarding publishing giants like Elsevier and American Chemical Society have caught the attention of academic authors, giving open access champions a unique opportunity to engage with University researchers and scientists. This session will describe a workshop for authors’ rights training that incorporates ResearchGate into discussions of copyright (including the use of SHERPA/RoMEO), licensing and copyright transfer negotiation. The workshop also entails a discussion of the perks of participating in both ResearchGate and non-commercial repositories by exploring how the services complement one another.

Attendees of this presentation will come away with ideas for designing their own authors’ …

Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller Jul 2018

Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

People think the election of Obama led to post racial America. Our research seeks to understand how collective memory of generations affects political understandings of the election of President Obama and President Trump. Using Bonilla-Silva’s lens of racism without racist and Berlant’s theory of cruel optimism we argue that post racial ideas are optimistic and hinder how individuals remember Americas racial past. Through interviewing Generation X and Millennials we find personal relationships factor into how individuals recall political events more than candidate stances. Decoupling politics from person creates a phenomenon where individuals assume voting does not have social implications.

When You Are Falling, Dive: Launching A Thesis Digitization Project, David Isaak, Tiffany Chang, Claire Pask, Avril Carrillo, Angie Beiriger

Northwest IR User Group

At Reed College, every student must complete a year-long thesis project and deposit a print copy of their final thesis in the Library. Though a descriptive catalog record (title, author, advisor, and department) exists for each of these 17,000 theses, students and faculty have trouble discovering relevant theses and tracking the evolution of previous research projects. An electronic theses collection does exist, but participation is voluntary and deposit rates low. This spring, the Library embarked on a digital scholarship pilot project to determine what resources and workflows will be necessary to digitize new incoming theses as well as retrospectively digitizing …

"Efficient" Thesis & Dissertation Workflows With Limited Resources, Michele Gibney

Northwest IR User Group

The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.

The goals starting in 2017 were as follows

  1. Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
  2. Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR
  3. Digitize all print copies in …

Finding The Right Equation For Success: An Exploratory Study On The Effects Of A Growth Mindset Intervention On College Students In Remedial Math, Tyrone A. Fleurizard, Patrick R. Young Jul 2018

Finding The Right Equation For Success: An Exploratory Study On The Effects Of A Growth Mindset Intervention On College Students In Remedial Math, Tyrone A. Fleurizard, Patrick R. Young

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

More and more students enter college in need of math remediation. Students in remedial math courses tend to report low self-efficacy, which negatively affects academic performance. To help low-achieving students succeed, researchers such as Dweck (2006) find that fostering a growth mindset increases self-efficacy and academic performance. The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of a growth mindset intervention on the self-efficacy and performance of students in remedial math. It was hypothesized that students who participated in the growth mindset intervention would report higher levels of self-efficacy and test scores than the students who did not. …

Turkish Eu Accession: The Influence Of The Far Right, Gregory Stryker Jul 2018

Turkish Eu Accession: The Influence Of The Far Right, Gregory Stryker

International Relations Summer Fellows

Samuel Huntington’s concept of ‘a clash of civilizations’ is used more frequently by some in the EU to explain the question of why the EU is seemingly stalling Turkey from becoming a full member state of the EU. Scholars offer many other possible reasons to explain the attempts from the EU to delay or even prevent Turkish accession based around arguments of identity, economics, or human rights, among others. This paper takes a different approach from other scholarly works by examining the domestic politics in the countries that have delayed Turkey from progressing with the accession negotiations. I argue that …

Who Wins And Who Loses? How Gentrification Caused By Public Transportation Is Felt Differently Across Race, Rosina Shipman Jul 2018

Who Wins And Who Loses? How Gentrification Caused By Public Transportation Is Felt Differently Across Race, Rosina Shipman

Politics Summer Fellows

When does a public good become harmful? And who does it harm? To tackle these questions I take a detailed look at how public transportation affects housing prices. Public transportation is a common good utilized by people of all different socioeconomic levels, but scholars have found that the presence of a new public transportation stop can be a catalyst for gentrification, raising housing prices and displacing previous residents. While this positive relationship between housing prices and public transportation is well documented, there is a lack of literature on how gentrification, caused by public transportation, affects neighborhood-housing prices across race. In …

Gloom And Doom In Europe: After The Trump-Disrupted Nato Summit, Erika Simpson Finds Our European Allies Disheartened And Fearful, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

In her analysis following the disrupted NATO Summit under President Trump, Erika Simpson reflects on Europe's somber mood and strategic uncertainties. Attendees at a post-summit conference in Italy expressed frustration and concern over Trump's demands for increased defense spending from European allies. Simpson, the sole Canadian present, emphasized Canada's NATO contributions despite feeling overlooked in defense discussions focused on Europe's eastern and southern flanks. European officials, grappling with fears of Russian aggression and challenges like cyberwarfare and migrant crises, discussed plans to bolster military capabilities amid economic constraints and political upheavals within the EU. Simpson highlights Canada's steadfast NATO commitments …

The World Of Women: Resources, Kellian Clink Jul 2018

The World Of Women: Resources, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

Women are absent from most standard encyclopedias in academic libraries such as the Europa World Year Book or the States’ Man Yearbook. To provide excellent service to our Gender and Women’s Studies scholars, librarians need to provide alternative sources of country information. Below are directories, country studies, and a listing of some significant websites with authoritative, timely, and substantial information about women around the world.

Some of the resources scoured to find these included the LibGuide: https://guides.library.oregonstate.edu/wgss280, the University of Wisconsin’s Women’s Knowledge Digital Library. In addition, intentional searching for websites and 30 years’ experience helping GWS scholars contributed to …

The Intersections Of Good Intentions, Criminality, And Anti-Carceral Feminist Logic: A Qualitative Study That Explores Sex Trades Content In Social Work Education, Meg Rose Panichelli Jul 2018

The Intersections Of Good Intentions, Criminality, And Anti-Carceral Feminist Logic: A Qualitative Study That Explores Sex Trades Content In Social Work Education, Meg Rose Panichelli

Dissertations and Theses

This study uses anti-carceral feminist logic to explore the cultural meanings, criminal implications, and neoliberal influence that shape the landscape of social work education about the sex trades in the United States and transnationally. "What are social work instructors teaching students about the sex trades in coursework?" is the question that directs the study, which uses a feminist qualitative methodology inclusive of intersectional feminist epistemology as well as direct content analysis. To answer this question, I analyzed 20 social work course syllabi from sex trade related courses across the contiguous United States and interviewed 20 social work instructors from 14 …

Understanding The American Subaltern: An Exploration Of Complex Literary Characters Through Socio-Cultural Lenses, Sophie Gioffre Jul 2018

Understanding The American Subaltern: An Exploration Of Complex Literary Characters Through Socio-Cultural Lenses, Sophie Gioffre

English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows

This project involves the analysis of three novels — Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Ann Petry’s The Street, and Toni Morrison’s Sula — featuring main characters who are forced to navigate realistic socio-economic environments rooted in racist, sexist, and classist systems of oppression in the United States of America. Through the process of completing close-readings of the novels, conducting extensive secondary research on historical contexts, and examining other scholarly criticisms and interpretations of these novels, I develop new insights into the main characters’ plights. To transfer this conceptual understanding into a more personal and empathetic …

The Influence Of Induced Anxiety On The P3 Event Related Brain Potentials Of Athletes And Novices In A Go/Nogo Task, Conley Waters, Keri Weed Jul 2018

The Influence Of Induced Anxiety On The P3 Event Related Brain Potentials Of Athletes And Novices In A Go/Nogo Task, Conley Waters, Keri Weed

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

An elite athlete employs complex skills during competition that have been learned and perfected over long periods of training. Skills that include kicking, throwing, and hitting are complicated and require heightened motor control, focus, and attention. Attention allocation and motor control may be evaluated by the P3 wave, a neurophysiological measure of cognitive control. The Go/NoGo task is often used to elicit a P3 wave by averaging electroencephalogram readings from frequent stimuli that require a response (Go) and infrequent stimuli that require response inhibition (NoGo). Anxiety may also affect performance, both on the athletic field and in the research laboratory. …

A Foucaultian Discourse Analysis Of Person-Centered Practice Using A Genealogical Framework Of Intellectual Disability, Nick Winges-Yanez Jul 2018

A Foucaultian Discourse Analysis Of Person-Centered Practice Using A Genealogical Framework Of Intellectual Disability, Nick Winges-Yanez

Dissertations and Theses

A genealogical framework highlights the important role sexuality has played in constructing the current label of intellectual disability (ID). The genealogical framework is meant to replace the social, medical, and/or rights-based model(s) that have dominated social work and social services working in the disability field. With this framework, or perspective, I use a Foucaultian discourse analysis to read through seminal texts regarding person-centered practice.

Person-centered practice is the foremost intervention used in social work, and other disciplines, to work with people labeled with intellectual disability. My research questions focus on what is revealed about ID in PCP through a genealogical …

Decolonial Gestures Of Andean Bilingual College Students Promoting Quechua: Community-Based Participatory Research With Photovoice, Yuliana H. Kenfield Jul 2018

Decolonial Gestures Of Andean Bilingual College Students Promoting Quechua: Community-Based Participatory Research With Photovoice, Yuliana H. Kenfield

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Andean college students in Cusco, Peru, struggle to overcome discrimination against bilingualism during their pursuit of higher education. To examine this situation and possibilities for change, I employed a participatory method, photovoice (Wang & Burris, 1994) within a community-based participatory research framework, to facilitate Quechua-Spanish bilingual college students’ exploration of Quechuan practices in their university. Participatory research methodology promoted critical dialogues to challenge ideologies that have obstructed the revitalization, maintenance, development of the Quechua language in higher education. Although university policies in Cusco formally promote inclusion of indigenous knowledge and practices, bilingual Spanish-Quechua practices on campus have remained largely symbolic. …

The Effects Of Abuse For African Americans Using Critical Autobiographical Analysis, Shelby Carmichael Jul 2018

The Effects Of Abuse For African Americans Using Critical Autobiographical Analysis, Shelby Carmichael

Psychology Summer Fellows

This analysis looks into the effects of sexual and physical abuse on the social outcomes and behavior of black children into adulthood. Incorporating current research findings on the effects of abuse on childhood development, an autobiographical analysis is conducted through the lens of critical theory to see the direct impact abuse has on an individual’s behavior and their social outcomes. Specifically this analysis will investigate the factors of socio-economic background, race, culture, community response to admitting abuse, access to therapeutic resources, externalized behavior, internalized behavior, and adulthood outcomes for African American abuse victims. This research contributes to the sparse literature …

Wide Educational Disparities In Young Adult Cardiovascular Health, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Robert A. Hummer, Benjamin W. Domingue, Kathleen Mullan Harris Jul 2018

Wide Educational Disparities In Young Adult Cardiovascular Health, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Robert A. Hummer, Benjamin W. Domingue, Kathleen Mullan Harris

Sociology Faculty Research

Widening educational differences in overall health and recent stagnation in cardiovascular disease mortality rates highlight the critical need to describe and understand educational disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH) among U.S. young adults. We use two data sets representative of the U.S. population to examine educational disparities in CVH among young adults (24–34) coming of age in the 21st century: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2010; N= 689) and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (2007–2008; N=11,200). We employ descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results show that fewer than one in four young adults had …

On The Same Page: A Formal Process For Training Multiple Interviewers, Carolyn Sattin-Bajaj

The Qualitative Report

The increased utilization of qualitative methodologies as part of mixed-method health and social science research has highlighted the need for training procedures for every stage of qualitative data collection and analysis. Yet, few group training models exist for collecting reliable, valid qualitative interview data. This article presents a multi-stage, collaborative interview training process for a large team of research assistants. The training program combines insights and techniques used in both structured and semi-structured interviewing. It also includes ongoing instruction and feedback prior to and during data collection in an effort to ensure consistency and reliability. In the article, I describe …
