Relational Identities And Other-Than-Human Agency In Archaeology, Eleanor Harrison-Buck, Julia A. Hendon
Relational Identities And Other-Than-Human Agency In Archaeology, Eleanor Harrison-Buck, Julia A. Hendon
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
Relational Identities and Other-than-Human Agency in Archaeology explores the benefits and consequences of archaeological theorizing on and interpretation of the social agency of nonhumans as relational beings capable of producing change in the world. The volume cross-examines traditional understanding of agency and personhood, presenting a globally diverse set of case studies that cover a range of cultural, geographical, and historical contexts.
Agency (the ability to act) and personhood (the reciprocal qualities of relational beings) have traditionally been strictly assigned to humans. In case studies from Ghana to Australia to the British Isles and Mesoamerica, contributors to this volume demonstrate that …
Data Collection Technology In Social Work: Evaluating Barriers To Utilization, Cynthia Lynn Jewett
Data Collection Technology In Social Work: Evaluating Barriers To Utilization, Cynthia Lynn Jewett
Social Work Theses - Archive
This thesis explores Master of Social Work students’ Behavioral Intent (BI) to use Excel using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Technology Usage (UTAUT) as a theoretical framework. Excel was selected as a proxy measure of students’ overall readiness for data-intensive professional tasks, including fundraising, outcome tracking and reporting, and assorted administrative and research activities. A survey was adapted from the original UTAUT to measure students’ BI to use Excel, as well as four theorized constructs which were hypothesized to explain BI. The survey was then distributed to a sample of students. Fifty-eight complete responses were received and analyzed using …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of educational experiences of eight African American (AA) men on academic probation, while attending a predominantly White college institution in the Southeastern part of the United States. While over the past decade increased attention has been given to the collegiate experiences of AA men, there has been little attention given to AA men who continue to struggle academically and are at the greatest risk of failing. Method: This study utilizes Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and Intersectionality Theory. Results: Participants in this study reported experienced Misrecognition, Diminished Confidence and …
Predicting Perceived Wellness For Cisgender Women Utilizing The Social Determinants Of Health Model: Testing Group Differences Between Sexual Minorities And Heterosexual Respondents, Kristen Leigh Hohn
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this investigation was to bridge a gap in the literature about health disparities experienced across the intersection of multiple identities of women in the United States. Through the theoretical frameworks of the Structural Determinants of Health (SDH; Solar & Irwin, 2010) and Minority Stress Theory (Meyer, 2003), the researcher conducted a cross-sectional anonymous online survey to test the multifaceted SDH statistical model with the Perceived Wellness Survey (PWS) as an outcome indicator for perceived health for sexual minority and non-sexual minority women. A great collection of research reveals increased rates of mental health problems, rates of victimization, …

Exploring Predictors Of Information Exchange: A Behavioral Validation Of The Issie Scale, Ryan Thomas Gertner
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
A multitude of factors have been found to influence the prevalence of information exchange behaviors among team members. However, there are no scales that have measured individual motivational and cognitive differences and how these predict group processes and behaviors. This dissertation helps advance our understanding of how individual differences towards information sharing, information seeking, ideation, and elaboration in group settings can influence group processes. The Information Sharing, Seeking, Ideation, and Elaboration scale (ISSIE) was designed to measure these processes and serve as a predictor for those specific behaviors. This dissertation consisted of a two-part study, one survey and one in …

Beyond Bribery: An Exploration Into Lobbying And International Corporate Influence In The Middle East, Polly D. Roark
Beyond Bribery: An Exploration Into Lobbying And International Corporate Influence In The Middle East, Polly D. Roark
Political Science Theses - Archive
Qualitative evidence suggests that corporations lobby within countries with informal structures abroad. While political science research on Western lobbying is robust, it falls short in understanding how multinational businesses operate in countries that do not possess regulated lobbying arenas. Given this, my research findings help fill a theoretical gap in political science literature by identifying how multinationals lobby within informal (unregulated) structures the same as they do within formal (regulated) arenas, like the US and EU. I argue that US multinational companies who engage the American lobbying arena are more likely to lobby within informal structures to ensure strategic goals. …

Obscured Leisure: Crafting As Leisure For Stay-At-Home Mothers, Christina Laura Carney
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning handcrafting has for stay-at-home mothers, the reasons some mothers engage in handcrafting, and how the practice of handcrafting influences motherhood. Qualitative data on handcrafting were gathered from in-depth, in person interviews with nine stay-at-home mothers. The data highlights the struggles stay-at-home mothers face in their everyday lives and how handcrafting serves to help mothers manage motherhood expectations. Handcrafting is a form of obscured leisure because it provides the mothers in this study some escape from the pressures of mothering while also allowing the mothers to perform intensive motherhood to their …

Extraversion, Trust In Institutions And Support For Eu Membership, Ardit Arifi
Extraversion, Trust In Institutions And Support For Eu Membership, Ardit Arifi
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis contributes to the growing literature that calls upon psychology traits and belief
systems to explain people’s attitudes toward their country’s EU membership. By relying on trust in politicians and institutions as well as self-reported extraversion, it argues for a positive association of such traits with people’s support for EU membership. I test my hypothesis with a probability simple random sample that I helped to collect in Albania during summer 2017. I find evidence that people’s trust in country’s politicians, EU politicians, and EU judiciary predict more support for Albania’s EU membership. However, I was not able to find …

Modeling Sound In Ancient Maya Cities: Moving Towards A Synesthetic Experience Using Gis And 3d Simulation, Graham Goodwin
Modeling Sound In Ancient Maya Cities: Moving Towards A Synesthetic Experience Using Gis And 3d Simulation, Graham Goodwin
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Digital technologies enable modeling of the potential role of sound in past environments. While digital approaches have limitations in objectively rendering reality, they provide an expanded platform that potentially increases our understanding of experience in the past and enhances the investigation of ancient landscapes. Digital technologies enable new experiences in ways that are multi-sensual and move us closer toward reconstructing holistic views of past landscapes. Archaeologists have successfully employed 2D and 3D tools to measure vision and movement within cityscapes. However, built environments are often designed to invoke synesthetic experiences that also include sound and other senses. Geographic Information Systems …

Does Perceived Angular Declination Contribute To Perceived Optical Slant On Level Ground?, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin
Does Perceived Angular Declination Contribute To Perceived Optical Slant On Level Ground?, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin
Psychology Faculty Works
When one looks at a spot on level ground, the local optical slant (i.e., surface orientation relative to the line of sight) is geometrically equivalent to the angular declination (i.e., sagittal visual direction relative to horizontal). In theory, angular declination provides an unbiased proximal source of information for estimating optical slant on level ground. Two experiments were conducted to investigate whether human visual systems take advantage of this information. An aspect ratio task was used as an implicit measure for assessing perceived optical slant. Participants gave verbal estimates of the perceived aspect ratio of an L-shaped arrangement, formed by three …
