Inclusion And Assimilation: Including Change In The Workplace, Marisa Jean Miller
Inclusion And Assimilation: Including Change In The Workplace, Marisa Jean Miller
Dissertations and Theses
Organizational assimilation is an ongoing and dynamic relationship between organization and individual member, where employees learn the expected norms of the organization and feel that they are able to attempt to make a change to the organization. Organizational members rely on social interactions within the organization to acquire the necessary knowledge they need to perform their roles, as well as support to attempt changes within the organization. This study proposes that feelings of inclusion, or the perception that an employee both belongs to and is unique within an organization, may be an influential construct associated with organizational assimilation and beneficial …

The Buffering Effect Of Mindfulness Between The Stressors And Perceived Stress In Faith-Based University Students, Amber Glantz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of study was to research the buffering effect of mindfulness between the stressors and perceived stress in faith-based university students. Literature suggests that as mindfulness increases, stress decreases. This study attempts to provide information on college students’ perceived stress levels, stressors they face, and mindfulness awareness. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the association between perceived stress, stressors, and mindfulness levels. A sample of 91 students in the Spring of 2018 at a faith-based university in Texas were asked to participate in an online survey. Some findings were not congruent with the literature. The results of …
Gdp And Refugees: An Economic Argument For Accepting Refugees, Michael Jarman
Gdp And Refugees: An Economic Argument For Accepting Refugees, Michael Jarman
Marriott Student Review
This paper examines both the costs and benefits associated with accepting refugees and purports to show that accepting refugees is economically beneficial; increasing GDP in the long run. There is a substantial cost associated with accepting and sustaining refugees, both in providing necessities and in the impact that refugees have on local job markets. However, longitudinal data pulled from Denmark, Germany, and Turkey has shown that local markets do recover from the initial shock. Over time as refugees integrate into their host communities, they provide dividends in the form of increasing demand, greater mobility and wage increases for locals, and …

Lessons: This poem highlights the critical social realities African American's face daily. I wanted to be the voice for many people who feel like they are not and will never he heard.
Our Dream: This poem signifies the stereotypes labeled to African Americans. I wanted to embrace that aspect by creating a relevant and relatable component which is why I decided to use the phrase "I have a dream" from the late, the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Travel For Transformation: Embracing A Counter-Hegemonic Approach To Transformative Learning In Study Abroad, James A. Gambrell
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This article reviews literature from 2006-2016 on study abroad (and other forms of travel) to investigate frameworks that create the best plausible opportunities for transformative learning within study-abroad experiences. According to the literature reviewed, in order to be considered travel for transformation, the travel experience must respect the values and knowledge of the host culture, acknowledge the presence of differences in privilege among study-abroad participants, and utilize environmentally sustainable practices. In addition, the duration, purpose of travel, and degree of immersion plays a significant role in perspective transformation. A repeated benefit to study-abroad programs among the articles indicate that study …

Race And Participant Perceptions: A Case Study Of Canadian International Service Learning Students In El Salvador, Kenzie Pulsifer
Social Justice and Community Engagement
International service learning – ISL after this, has grown in volume and interest across the post-secondary educational landscape in the last two decades in the ‘North’. In attendance with this growth, has been an increasing concern regarding its capacity to be an effective and progressive set of learning and engagement practices. Most broadly, are the concerns with the neo-colonial character and legacy associated with current ISL presence in the South – the content of participant values and beliefs – how they perceive and practice their roles in these experiences. This research investigates most specifically, a concern associated with these North-South …

Moving Women Of Color From Reliable Voters To Candidates For Public Office, Christina Bejarano, Wendy Smooth
Moving Women Of Color From Reliable Voters To Candidates For Public Office, Christina Bejarano, Wendy Smooth
Latino Public Policy
In recent presidential elections, women, people of color, millennials, and new immigrants shaped the outcomes of those elections. Women of color standing at the nexus of two underrepresented groups in politics- racial minorities and women- demonstrated their commitments to democracy by maintaining their traditions as reliable voters, far exceeding expectations. In this project, we ask what is necessary to move these women of color from reliable voters to candidates for political office and locate our answer with women of color. They are doing much of the work to deepen democratic engagement in communities of color, namely mobilizing voters and political …
Interrupted Family Ties: How The Detention Or Deportation Of A Parent Transforms Family Life, Blanca Ramirez
Interrupted Family Ties: How The Detention Or Deportation Of A Parent Transforms Family Life, Blanca Ramirez
Latino Public Policy
Estimates suggests that between 2011 and 2013, at least half a million children experienced the deportation of a parent (Capps et al. 2015). While multiple studies document the numerous psychological and economic effects of this aggressive system of immigration enforcement, an understudied area in this literature is how families navigate family life throughout the process of a detention and/or deportation. By doing so, this study recognizes that families perform new roles including advocacy, emotional anchoring, and financial laboring in an attempt to maintain family well-being.
Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Community Leadership Program Based On The Experiences And Perceptions Of Alumni Participants, Sandi Wolff
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the perceptions of alumni who participated in a civic leadership program (LP) in a large, metropolitan city with over 1.7 million residents in its local community. The program, with a 42 year-long history, had no formal data on its participants, the program, or its efficacy. The research investigated the expectations, experience, and engagement of participants over its 42-year history. To examine these concepts, the study was motivated by three research questions: (1) What is the relationship between the participants’ program satisfaction and the program elements? (2) To what extent did the program meet expectations, based on participant …

The Initial Planning Process Of An International Service-Learning Pilot Initiative Under Development, Denise P. Krohn
Theses & Dissertations
This research explored the initial planning process of an international service-learning (ISL) initiative under development that involved a collaboration among a south-central Texas private university, a ministry of Catholic Sisters in Peru, a U.S. non-profit organization, and a Peruvian optometry school. Three collaborators were founded by the same religious order. An overlapping in mission and values influenced the context. By delving into the expectations of higher education and its pedagogical practices, ISL’s history and conceptualizations, and concepts of program planning and designing related to the fields of ISL and adult learning, this study presented significant program development aspects. Furthermore, the …

Talent Management Strategy As A Catalyst At Singapore Management University (Smu) Libraries, Gulcin Cribb, Rajendra Munoo

With almost no natural resources, Singapore’s knowledge-based economy is dependent on its talent. The government has been advocating the critical importance of on-going upskilling of its citizens to become a smart nation in an increasingly Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world. Its recent SkillsFuture agenda was launched in 2016 to provide Singaporeans with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life. Universities are expected to support this initiative and provide industry specific education to build a competitive workforce that is based on a tripartite collaboration between government, industry and universities. Singapore Management University (SMU) too, has responded and …

Dare You 'Outsource' Your Library Freshmen Orientation To Student Facilitators? Why We Are Roaring About It At Singapore Management University Libraries, Redzuan Abdullah
Research Collection Library
Libraries are constantly seeking opportunities to evolve their library orientations in order to be more engaging and collaborative with students. In the lead-up to new term, SMU Libraries collaborated with the Office of Student Life (OSL), to pilot a peer-to-peer learning experience where student leaders conducted and facilitated the library orientation programme, which introduces new students to the physical and digital libraries. The trigger for this was the Provost’s Freshmen Experience Taskforce that mandated a review for a more coordinated orientation programme with the different offices and events for freshmen. The library was part of this taskforce that had traditionally …

Technology That Enables, Services That Empower, Yuyun Wirawati Ishak
Research Collection Library
Before 2016, the Library offered two different information desks: one for general/circulation enquiry and one for reference enquiry. The problem at that time was quite glaring: we were to open a new library branch, and if we replicated the information desks, we would have ended up with 4 different information desks, causing constraints in human resources and logistics. The solution seemed obvious: to merge the information desks into a single desk, hence cutting down the needs for staffing. The implementation, however, was not that straightforward. Staff who used to manage circulation enquiry were not comfortable with reference enquiry, and vice versa. …

Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Librarian Research
The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudinal, normative, and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior was employed to demonstrate how these factors influence behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge. This research used a survey method to examine to what extent those attitudinal, normative, resource factors influence psychologists’ behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge, and therefore engage in data sharing behaviors. A national survey (n = 341) across the field of psychology showed that perceived benefit and perceived risk had significant positive and negative relationships …
Help Or Hindrance? Outside Group Advertising Expenditures In House Races, Anne E. Baker
Help Or Hindrance? Outside Group Advertising Expenditures In House Races, Anne E. Baker
Political Science
Super PACs, 501(c)4 social welfare organizations, and 501(c)6 professional associations are now major spenders in House elections. What remains unclear is how the strategic expenditure choices of these respective outside interest groups impact the competitive position of non-incumbent candidates running for the House – specifically do their advertising expenditures undermine or augment the expenditures made by the campaign. Using the Wesleyan Media Project datasets of 2012 and 2014 in combination with campaign finance data in a series of models, I find early television advertising expenditures by the aforementioned 501(c) dark money organizations diminish the effectiveness of non-incumbents’ campaign expenditures – …
