Tribal Margins: Dalit Belonging And State Recognition In The Western Himalayas, Steven Christopher Johnson Aug 2018

Tribal Margins: Dalit Belonging And State Recognition In The Western Himalayas, Steven Christopher Johnson

Dissertations - ALL

Tribal Margins analyzes the project of tribal fashioning in the Western Himalayas against the backdrop of affirmative action politics. Specifically, it unpacks the discursive loop between government-administered ethnological paradigms for positive discrimination and its effects on ethnic belonging and spirituality.

These dynamics are located among the Gaddis of Himachal Pradesh, a heterogeneous tribal/Dalit community traditionally associated with transhumant pastoralism on both sides of the Dhauladhar Mountains. The 2002 awarding of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to only high-caste Kangra Gaddis has instigated a range of tribalizing strategies from Dalit groups who identity as Gaddi and are partially assimilated into tribal life. …

The Us-Japan Alliance And China's Rise: Alliance Strategy And Reassurance, Deterrence, And Compellence, Erik David French Aug 2018

The Us-Japan Alliance And China's Rise: Alliance Strategy And Reassurance, Deterrence, And Compellence, Erik David French

Dissertations - ALL

Do changes in US alliance strategy toward Japan affect the US’ ability to succeed in reassuring, deterring, and compelling a rising China? This study contends that when the US pursues a distancing strategy toward from Japan, Japan adopts hedging strategies that may undercut US reassurance, deterrence, and compelling China. When the US pursues increased coordination with Japan, however, Japan increases its support for US policy toward China. Stronger Japanese support for US policy, in turn, strengthens the US’ ability to reassure, deter, and compel China. In making this argument, this study speaks to ongoing policy debates over the US-Japan alliance …

The Detection Of Adhd And Malingering In Young Adults, Heather Potts Aug 2018

The Detection Of Adhd And Malingering In Young Adults, Heather Potts

Dissertations - ALL

Over the past 20 years, an increasing number of adults and college students have self-referred for ADHD evaluations. With the rise in adult ADHD evaluations, there has been increased concern that a proportion of these adults may be malingering the symptoms of ADHD to receive external incentives such as academic accommodations and stimulant medications. Research supports the use of well-validated measures to classify malingering in non-ADHD populations, yet all available validity tests have insufficient research to support their usage to detect this population. The present study investigated the ability of the Multidimensional ADHD Rating Scale (MARS) and two published validity …

How Military Service Influences The Transition To Adulthood Among Post-911 Young Adult Female Veterans With Service Related Disabilities, Gary Shaheen Aug 2018

How Military Service Influences The Transition To Adulthood Among Post-911 Young Adult Female Veterans With Service Related Disabilities, Gary Shaheen

Dissertations - ALL

Over 280,000 female servicemembers have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and a significant number of them are experiencing hidden and/or visible wounds of war. Recent reports indicate that female servicemembers have service-connected disability ratings higher than that of their male counterparts. Female servicemembers often find themselves negotiating roles that are at once ‘inside’ as well as ‘outside’ of a hierarchical, proscribed military institution whose rituals, norms, and hierarchies privilege males in positions of power. Their transition to adulthood as young veterans with service-related disabilities, within a present-day civilian society that can be more ambiguous and discontinuous than in …

The Associations Between Parental Involvement And Science Achievement Via Children's Perceived Academic Competence And Academic Effort, Yue Zhang Aug 2018

The Associations Between Parental Involvement And Science Achievement Via Children's Perceived Academic Competence And Academic Effort, Yue Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

The primary goal of this study was to examine the way in which parental involvement, specifically parents’ educational expectations and parent-child communication, are related directly to children’s science achievement, and indirectly, through their perceived academic competence and academic effort across gender and race/ethnicity groups using data from the Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY). The ecological model, social cultural contexts of parental academic socialization, the parental involvement framework, and social cognitive theory served as the theoretical frameworks for the study. The sample included 3,116 seventh graders (1,621 male and 1,495 female students) and their parents. Structural regression analysis was performed, …

Curvilinear Association Between Language Disfluency And Fmr1 Cgg Repeat Size Across The Normal, Intermediate, And Premutation Range, Jessica Klusek, Ann Porter, Leonard Abbeduto, Tatyana Adayev, Flora Tassone, Marsha R. Mailick, Anne Glicksman, Bridgette L. Tonnsen, Jane E. Roberts Aug 2018

Curvilinear Association Between Language Disfluency And Fmr1 Cgg Repeat Size Across The Normal, Intermediate, And Premutation Range, Jessica Klusek, Ann Porter, Leonard Abbeduto, Tatyana Adayev, Flora Tassone, Marsha R. Mailick, Anne Glicksman, Bridgette L. Tonnsen, Jane E. Roberts

Faculty Publications

Historically, investigations of FMR1 have focused almost exclusively on the clinical effects of CGG expansion within the categories of the premutation (55–200 CGG repeats) and fragile X syndrome (>200 CGG repeats). However, emerging evidence suggests that CGG-dependent phenotypes may occur across allele sizes traditionally considered within the “normal” range. This study adopted an individual-differences approach to determine the association between language production ability and CGG repeat length across the full range of normal, intermediate, and premutation alleles. Participants included 61 adult women with CGG repeats within the premutation (n = 37), intermediate (i.e., 41–54 repeats; n = 2), …

Race, Xenophobia, And Punitiveness Among The American Public, Joseph O. Baker, David Cañarte, L. Edward Day Aug 2018

Race, Xenophobia, And Punitiveness Among The American Public, Joseph O. Baker, David Cañarte, L. Edward Day

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

We outline four connections between xenophobia and punitiveness toward criminals in a national sample of Americans. First, among self-identified whites xenophobia is more predictive of punitiveness than specific forms of racial animus. Second, xenophobia and punitiveness are strongly connected among whites, but are only moderately and weakly related among black and Hispanic Americans, respectively. Third, among whites substantial proportions of the variance between sociodemographic, political, and religious predictors of punitiveness are mediated by levels of xenophobia. Finally, xenophobia is the strongest overall predictor of punitiveness among whites. Overall, xenophobia is an essential aspect of understanding public punitiveness, particularly among whites.
