Real-World Research: A Qualitative Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of The Library's Role In Service-Learning, Anne Marie Gruber Oct 2018

Real-World Research: A Qualitative Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of The Library's Role In Service-Learning, Anne Marie Gruber

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Service-learning, a growing pedagogy in higher education, provides opportunities for students to contribute to communities and to reflect upon experiences ranging from direct service to advocacy. Librarians have an important but underutilized role in supporting service-learning as they contribute to institutional missions and the public purposes of academia. However, there is a gap in the literature related to faculty perceptions of information literacy instruction and skills related to service-learning. The researcher used semi-structured in-depth interviews, investigating these perceptions among 12 faculty across 10 disciplines. Findings support the role of library instruction in service-learning, with a focus on helping students engage …

A Business Librarian Finds Inspiration In Pico, Jim Kelly Oct 2018

A Business Librarian Finds Inspiration In Pico, Jim Kelly

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Not quite a year ago I found myself in a familiar situation. A one-shot instruction session was fast approaching. It was for a professor and class project that I knew from prior semesters: a marketing research class in which student teams work on specific business questions or problems put forth by local clients (small businesses, non-profit groups, campus organizations, etc.). The semester-long project involves a mixture of both primary and secondary market research. My role in these sessions is to introduce the students to some key library resources and search techniques to help them find secondary research to inform their …

A Zero-Inflated Box-Cox Normal Unipolar Item Response Model For Measuring Constructs Of Psychopathology, Brooke E. Magnus, Yang Liu Oct 2018

A Zero-Inflated Box-Cox Normal Unipolar Item Response Model For Measuring Constructs Of Psychopathology, Brooke E. Magnus, Yang Liu

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This research introduces a latent class item response theory (IRT) approach for modeling item response data from zero-inflated, positively skewed, and arguably unipolar constructs of psychopathology. As motivating data, the authors use 4,925 responses to the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a nine Likert-type item depression screener that inquires about a variety of depressive symptoms. First, Lucke’s log-logistic unipolar item response model is extended to accommodate polytomous responses. Then, a nontrivial proportion of individuals who do not endorse any of the symptoms are accounted for by including a nonpathological class that represents those who may be absent on or at some …

Comparing Procedures On The Acquisition And Generalization Of Tacts For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Norma R. Schnell, Jason C. Vladescu, Tiffany Kodak, Casey L. Nottingham Oct 2018

Comparing Procedures On The Acquisition And Generalization Of Tacts For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Norma R. Schnell, Jason C. Vladescu, Tiffany Kodak, Casey L. Nottingham

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Generalization is a critical outcome for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who display new skills in a limited range of contexts. In the absence of proper planning, generalization may not be observed. The purpose of the current study was to directly compare serial to concurrent multiple exemplar training using total training time per exemplar, mean total training time, and exposures to mastery across three children diagnosed with ASD. Additionally, we assessed the efficiency of presenting secondary targets in the antecedent and consequence portions of learning trials and evaluated generalization to tacts not associated with direct teaching. Results suggested that …

Parkland Students And Fictive Kin Relationships, Aliana Galloza, Nadleen Judeh, Karla Rodriguez

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life

This slide presentation is the result of an ethnography assignment for Anthropology 103. With the hypothesis that that friendships made in elementary and high school years are stronger than friendships made in community college, the group conducted interviews and surveys to test whether friendships with family-like bonds develop among students at Parkland College. Found that college age students are finding friendships in a variety of settings and are actively building close friendships as they continue their education.

A Study Of Parkland Student Social Life, Mitchell Flanagin, Matthew Griffith, Lily Lincoln, Michelle Morrison, Daniel Wyckoff

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life

This slide presentation is the result of an ethnography assignment for Anthropology 103. The group conducted two random surveys and several in-person interviews and found that the majority of students questioned participate in student activities sometime or often, but that only a very small percentage reported making good friends at Parkland. Other findings indicated that over half the students surveyed were actively seeking friendships, but only about one third were actively involved in clubs. All surveyed indicated that technology has impacted how we socialize.

Small Steps On The Long Journey To Equality: A Timeline Of Post-Legislation Civil Rights Struggles In Portland, Leanne Claire Serbulo Oct 2018

Small Steps On The Long Journey To Equality: A Timeline Of Post-Legislation Civil Rights Struggles In Portland, Leanne Claire Serbulo

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Leanne Serbulo presented a timeline of civil rights struggles in Portland, Oregon, at a public history roundtable at the Oregon Historical Society commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. In this record of her presentation, Serbulo documents milestones in dismantling racial discrimination between 1949 and 1990. For this timeline, Serbulo researched Metropolitan Human Relations Commission (MHRC) records held at the Portland City Archives and traces how the commission navigated the process of improving race relations in the city and Multnomah County. As Serbulo argues, “civil rights legislation was simply the first step in a long and unfinished …

Ready For The Robot: Bovines In The Integrated Circuit, Scout Calvert Oct 2018

Ready For The Robot: Bovines In The Integrated Circuit, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Situating cows as co-laborers in global technology sectors, “Ready for the Robot” explores the predicament of cows working as robot operators, information workers, and data producers. The data cows produce shape the conditions in which they work, including their own bodies, as statistical evaluations of cattle abstract profitable traits and warp their connection to breed. Milking robots are posited as providing freedom to dairy cows, but this is far from guaranteed. Rather, cow bodies are programmed to fit the limitations of the robot and the routines of the automated farm, coding that breaches categories of breed. Drawing on Donna Haraway’s …

Measurement And Modeling Of The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz, Steven L. Namikas Oct 2018

Measurement And Modeling Of The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz, Steven L. Namikas

Faculty Publications

The spatiotemporal dynamics of surface moisture exert a significant influence on the operation of aeolian transport systems at many beaches. However, we currently lack the detailed understanding of variability in surface moisture required to incorporate it into aeolian models. This problem is addressed here through direct measurements and simulation modeling of beach surface moisture over a twelve-day period, and through quantification of the relative contributions of evaporation, condensation and groundwater inputs to surface moisture. It was found that the beach surface can be characterized spatially in terms of three moisture zones: a consistently dry zone (40%). The relative influence of …

Recent legislation and regulation governing Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA), and settlement agreements between states and the U.S. Department of Justice are clarifying federal intent and paving the way to supporting opportunities for people with disabilities to have meaningful jobs in their communities. With an increasing emphasis on integrated employment and an Employment First philosophy, the nation is poised for transformation that could put Americans with disabilities on a path out of poverty and towards self-sufficiency. However, there remains a significant gap in employment rates between people with and without …

Bonding Images: Photography And Film As Acts Of Perpetration, Christophe Busch Oct 2018

Bonding Images: Photography And Film As Acts Of Perpetration, Christophe Busch

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Historical and contemporary cases of collective violence show an incremental use of photography and film to capture and disseminate violent acts. Recording cruelty during conflict seems to be a highly ritualised practice that urges the question what communicative and psychological functions these acts have? Why and how does perpetrator photography shape a binding moral world that divides 'us' versus 'them'? These visualising acts are commonly seen as proof of power that desensitises the perpetrators and dehumanises the victims. This contribution focuses on the imagery of the Holocaust, looks into the functions that capturing and sharing cruelty has on the evolution …
