Deciduousness in dry tropical forests results in substantial seasonal changes to canopy gap fractions. The characterization of such structural properties over large areas is necessary for understanding energy and nutrient distribution within forest ecosystems. However, a spatial extrapolation of measurements from relatively few, spatially-concentrated field observations can yield estimated values that have questionable accuracy and precision at regional scales. Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) recommends the Figure of Merit (FOM) as a possible metric to confirm models that simulate deforestation baselines for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD). The FOM ranges from 0% to 100%, where larger FOMs indicate more-accurate simulations. VCS requires that simulation models achieve a FOM greater than or equal to the percentage deforestation during the calibration period. This article analyses FOM's mathematical properties and illustrates FOM's empirical behavior by comparing various models that simulate deforestation and the resulting carbon disturbance in Bolivia during 2010-2014. Urban ecosystems are widely hypothesized to be more ecologically homogeneous than natural ecosystems. We argue that urban plant communities assemble from a complex mix of horticultural and regional species pools, and evaluate the homogenization hypothesis by comparing cultivated and spontaneously occurring urban vegetation to natural area vegetation across seven major U.S. cities. There was limited support for homogenization of urban diversity, as the cultivated and spontaneous yard flora had greater numbers of species than natural areas, and cultivated phylogenetic diversity was also greater. Genetic test results have important implications for close family members. Indeterminate negative results are the most common outcome of BRCA1/2 muta-tion testing. Little is known about family members' understanding of indeterminate negative BRCA1/2 test results. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to in-vestigate how daughters and sisters received and understood genetic test results as shared by their mothers or sisters. Participants included 81 women aged 40–74 with mothers or sisters previously diagnosed with breast cancer and who received inde-terminate negative BRCA1/2 test results. Participants had never been diagnosed with breast cancer nor received their own genetic testing or counseling. …

Illegal, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) often occurs in remote highly biodiverse areas, such as the Madre de Dios region of Peru. Mercury used in gold mining bioaccumulates in the environment and poses developmental, hormonal, and neurological threats to wildlife. The impact of ASGM on biodiversity remains largely unknown. We used geographic information science to create a spatial model of pollution risk from mining sites, in order to predict locations and species assemblages at risk. This study compares and analyzes the strategic position of bond markets in ASEAN-5 countries using the Strategic Position and Action Evaluation matrix approach as a diagnostic tool. The results reveal that the bond markets in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand are in an aggressive posture, whereas the bond market in the Philippines is in the conservative position and the Indonesian bond market is the one in a defensive posture. The current strategic position of each bond market, together with scores in each dimension, helps identify key prospects and challenges that could considerably affect strategic development of bond markets in the region.

This paper explores the relationship between ownership structure and the skewness in the stock return distribution among ASEAN-5 equity markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand during 2007–2015. This study adds to the existing literatures that ownership structure can explain skewness of the stock returns. The empirical results reveal that stock returns in ASEAN-5 markets present asymmetric distribution. Further, by employing firm-level data, the results show that ownership structure, cumulative daily stock returns, firm size, and market-to-book ratio significantly affect future skewness of the stock returns.

This paper studies how inflation affects the debt dynamics focusing on six ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Using projection data, we perform simulations of debt dynamics under various inflation policies. It results that Vietnam has the highest ability of inflating debt, while the Philippines is lastly ranked. Moreover, the optimal inflation rate for each member country and also the common policy rate for ASEAN integration are calculated under additional debt management motive. We found that if the ASEAN happened to use the common inflation policy rate, Malaysia and the Philippines would not be much affected …

This paper investigates patterns of business cycle synchronization and analyzes the underlying common factors in six ASEAN countries, that is, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Two important findings result. First, according to resulting regime probabilities calculated from the Markov-switching model, Singapore is not synchronized with other ASEAN members, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are highly correlated. Second, according to the principal component analysis, we find that the world’s import value growth, the output growth of China, and the capital flow of Singapore are most likely to account for 88% of variation in probabilities of the ASEAN …

We determined and compared the degree of implementation of humanistic sustainability human resource management (HRM) practices. We analyzed which among the firm demographics, such as the number of years of operation, size, and type of ownership, is its significant predictor. Based on the Motivations of Humanistic “Sustain Ability” framework where the HRM practices were rooted, we used the descriptive, correlational, and causal research designs to analyze the 137 samples responses of various companies who participated in the survey. Central America is characterized by an asymmetric forest transition in which net deforestation is a product of both forest loss and patches of forest resurgence. Forest loss is also associated with rights violations. We explore the extent to which extractive industry and infrastructure investments create pressure on forest resources, community rights and livelihoods. Drivers of this investment are identified, in particular: constitutional, legislative and regulatory reforms; energy policies; new financial flows; and ideas of development emphasizing the centrality of infrastructure in combining geographical integration and economic growth. Large-scale access and energy infrastructure projects, together with expanding investments in natural resource extraction, pose significant challenges to biodiversity conservation, forest cover, and the defence of forest peoples' rights and livelihoods across the wider Amazon region. Following a period in which safeguards and forest dwellers' territorial rights were strengthened under more permissive political opportunity structures, the current period has been characterized by efforts to weaken these protections and to facilitate large-scale private investment in previously protected lands. The US government's incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II denied over 120,000 people basic rights and civil liberties. Limits on owning cameras inflicted unique hardship as people were unable to photographically document their lives as they had before the war. My research focuses on photographs that people managed to take and acquire in the camps, investigating the role of snapshot photography in remembering and understanding World War II experiences of incarceration. Limiting climate warming to <2°C requires increased mitigation efforts, including land stewardship, whose potential in the United States is poorly understood. We quantified the potential of natural climate solutions (NCS)-21 conservation, restoration, and improved land management interventions on natural and agricultural lands-to increase carbon storage and avoid greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. We found a maximum potential of 1.2 (0.9 to 1.6) Pg CO2e year−1, the equivalent of 21% of current net annual emissions of the United States. At current carbon market prices (USD 10 per Mg CO2e), 299 Tg CO2e year−1 could be achieved. NCS would also provide air and water filtration, flood control, soil health, wildlife habitat, and climate resilience benefits.

Successfully landing and then negotiating for your first position is an exciting and challenging task. In this article, we use a narrative review to present the literature on gender and negotiation with a focus on academic psychology work contexts. We highlight important differences between factors that are within the individual’s control versus factors at the institutional or societal level. Drawing directly from the research literature, we make several recommendations for women trying to manage negotiation in contexts that are likely biased against them at the institutional and cultural level. Teen dating violence (TDV) is a serious public health concern that can cause long-term problems in its victims. The present study used data collected in a study funded by the CDC to explore whether self-control operates as a mediator between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and TDV perpetration. The survey was distributed to random samples of 6th and 9th graders from 14 public schools in Michigan (N = 1236). Preliminary correlation tests revealed a strong negative relationship between self-control and TDV perpetration as well as a positive relationship between ACE and TDV perpetration. Zero tolerance policies in schools have led to substantial financial, personal, and social costs. These policies are widely criticized for being discriminatory, particularly among youth from minority backgrounds. The ways we have responded to behaviors in school has changed dramatically over the years. Today, harsh discipline measures result in lengthy out of school suspensions for minor infractions. This literature review examines the school-to-prison pipeline is and how zero tolerance policies have contributed to this social justice issue. Strategies designed to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline are also discussed.

Despite being a large and fast-growing ethnic group in the United States, only a small amount of research has focused on intergroup attitudes and prejudice held by Latinos towards other groups. Suppression is a useful everyday skill leading to the clinically important outcome of forgetting. Suppression-induced forgetting, investigated with the think/no-think (TNT) paradigm, is typically demonstrated on direct tests of memory, even though indirect tests are often more ecologically valid. We report results from two TNT experiments terminating in indirect tests—tests that seem not to measure memory. For a subset of the participants in Experiment 1, latencies to rate word valence were delayed by flankers previously learned but not by flankers previously learned and then suppressed on 16 occasions. In this introductory article, we present the special issue and outline our research agenda on extractive development, social mobilization, and policy impact in Latin America. We propose a shift in analytical focus from the study of resistance to studying the policy and institutional impacts of mobilization. We outline possible outcomes of interest and conditions contributing to the attainment of policy and institutional change.
