Critical Peace Pedagogies At The American Center For Civil And Human Rights And The Canadian Museum For Human Rights: A Comparative Case Study, Ion Vlad
Doctoral Dissertations
The struggle for racial equity in the United States and Canada is ongoing. Troubled historical legacies in both countries have present-day implications. African Americans and Indigenous Canadians are still two of the most marginalized populations from the standpoint of socioeconomics and political representation (Giroux, 2013; Vickers, 2012). In order to redress these problems, human rights and peace education have to pose structural questions and expose systemic unbalances. In the recent past, neoliberalism has had a major influence on the organization and content of American and Canadian formal education, obscuring some of these structural questions (Ravitch, 2013). In this context, human …
Measuring Agricultural Drought And Uncertainty In Future Drought Projections, Junyu Lu
Measuring Agricultural Drought And Uncertainty In Future Drought Projections, Junyu Lu
Theses and Dissertations
Drought is a devastating, recurring, and widespread natural hazard that affects natural habitats, ecosystems, and economic and social sectors. Within the agricultural sector, droughts can reduce soil-water availability, affect water and soil quality, contribute to crop failures and pasture losses, and severely reduce crop yield. Effective drought quantification and early warning are critical for drought risk adaptation. Moreover, future drought risks could be exacerbated due to climate change. Modeling how climate change might influence future drought risks is of great importance in natural resources and water resources planning management. This dissertation has three parts. 1) The first part compares and …
Why Is No One Getting A Weave Of An Afro: Examining Culture, Economy, And Domestic Human Hair Consumption By African American Women, Brittani Young
Why Is No One Getting A Weave Of An Afro: Examining Culture, Economy, And Domestic Human Hair Consumption By African American Women, Brittani Young
Theses and Dissertations
The market for human hair, in the form of wigs and hair weaves, has grown exponentially, with African American women comprising a significant portion of consumers in the United States. Similar to other markets, the structure and patterns of hair consumption by African American women is the result of a variety of historical and geographical factors. In this thesis I investigate the role of African American women in the global human hair trade, and consider the implications of contemporary discourses around ‘good’ and ‘black’ hair in order to better understand trade in human hair. In particular, I use a combination …
Consistency Of Health Behaviors And Relations To Bmi In First Year College Students, Laura Nicholson
Consistency Of Health Behaviors And Relations To Bmi In First Year College Students, Laura Nicholson
Master's Theses
Existing research suggests that individuals with erratic schedules (e.g., shift workers) may be at greater risk for weight gain. This may be due, in part, to the inconsistent timing of health behaviors, such as sleep. Little is known, however about the relevance of the consistent timing of health behaviors among other populations, including college students who are risk for weight gain. The current study examined the consistency of three health behaviors (i.e. sleep, eating occurrences, and physical activity) and relations with body weight among first year college students at a large Midwestern university. Daily diary methods were used to collect …
Police Beats And City Streets: An Examination Of Black American And Latinx Youth Interactions With And Perceptions Of Police, Ogechi Onyeka
Police Beats And City Streets: An Examination Of Black American And Latinx Youth Interactions With And Perceptions Of Police, Ogechi Onyeka
Master's Theses
Existing research on issues of race and police suggest that Black Americans and Latinx youth tend to have more negative experiences with, and views of, police than individuals from other ethnoracial groups. This finding is even more robust among Black American and Latinx youth, notably those living in low-income and high crime communities. The victimization and constant burden such perceptions of police and police interactions have on Black American youth can potentially cause psychological damage. When coupled with repeated exposure to social, economic, and racially-related stressors, the former may result in greater adverse psychological outcomes. However, resilience factors such as …
Reflections On Life: Replication And Extension, Karen Osowski
Reflections On Life: Replication And Extension, Karen Osowski
Master's Theses
This study used an experimental methodology to examine positive affect and gratitude as mediators of the beneficial impact of an intervention in which older adults savor "life lessons" they have learned in growing older on measures of psychological well-being (i.e., positive attitudes toward aging, life satisfaction, anxiety, state self-esteem, and state hope). In the following pages, I first review the background literature on gerontology and quality of life as well as describe, in detail, the original experiment (Smith & Bryant, 2018) that formed the foundation of the proposed research. Next, I describe several extensions of this earlier study that are …
It's About Time: Length Of Incarceration, Gang Membership, And Recidivism Among Illinois Prison Releasees, Henry Douglas Otto
It's About Time: Length Of Incarceration, Gang Membership, And Recidivism Among Illinois Prison Releasees, Henry Douglas Otto
Master's Theses
This study explored the effect of time spent incarcerated on recidivism among a sample of individuals released from IDOC facilities from 2011 to 2014 (N = 72,716). Gang members were compared to non-gang members in order to evaluate the potentially heterogeneous nature of the effect of length of stay on recidivism within the competing frameworks of deterrence theory and social learning theory. The samples were further split into separate analyses based on the current felony class, and length of stay was operationalized as incarceration in months and split into quartiles based on the distribution of each felony class sample. The …
Voices From The Margins: Service Providers Perspectives On Empowering Refugee Women, Deidra Ann Coleman
Voices From The Margins: Service Providers Perspectives On Empowering Refugee Women, Deidra Ann Coleman
Master's Theses
Refugee women face considerable challenges while fleeing their countries, and attempting to adjust to their new lives in their host country. As a result of being both a woman, and a member of a marginalized group, refugee women tend to suffer disproportionately during displacement and and resettlement (UNHCR, 2015). They are more likely to be discriminated due their gender and ethnicity, and to lack the necessary community supports and resources needed to overcome barriers they encounter. In response to the refugee crisis, service organizations have emphasized empowerment as a key way to improve the lives of refugee women. While there …
Examining Recidivism And Correlates Of Yasi Scores Among Youth Released From Idjj, Claire Fischer
Examining Recidivism And Correlates Of Yasi Scores Among Youth Released From Idjj, Claire Fischer
Master's Theses
There are two main purposes of this research: 1) to provide the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) with an updated picture of recidivism and 2) to determine how YASI risk/needs/protective domains and risk scores relate to post-release recidivism. To date, the research that is available regarding youth recidivism is fraught with methodological concerns (i.e., inconsistency in measurement). Moreover, there have been no systematic analyses of the YASI in Illinois since its implementation within the IDJJ. Thus, the present research will attempt to fill in the gaps by assessing rates of juvenile recidivism, the degree to which needs identified by …

The Neurobiological Correlates Of Savoring, Ian James Kahrilas
Master's Theses
Personality traits pertaining to positive emotion may be a key factor in deriving vitality from our lives. Positive affectivity refers to one's disposition to experience intense and frequent episodes of positive affect, while savoring capacity refer to one's ability to regulate positive affect. Both traits have been positively associated with happiness, self-esteem, prosocial behaviors, improved health outcomes, as well as attenuated depressive symptomatology and neuroticism. The late positive potential (LPP) is an electroencephalography (EEG) component that is theorized to index a visual cortical/amygdala pathway that is involved in evaluating the affective salience of stimuli. LPP is sensitive to the emotional …

Policymaking And Paid Family Leave: Revitalizing The Family Medical Leave Act Of 1993, Jasmeer Basi
Doctoral Dissertations
The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) applies to all public agencies, public schools, private elementary schools, and companies with 50 or more employees. It is designed to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by allowing them to take unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons. Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. However, the FMLA has proven to be ineffective in meeting the …

Mental Health Interventions For Homeless Young Children Through An Attachment Theory Lens : A Review And Analysis Of The Literature, Kimberly Mckittrick
Mental Health Interventions For Homeless Young Children Through An Attachment Theory Lens : A Review And Analysis Of The Literature, Kimberly Mckittrick
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis is a review and analysis of the literature on mental health interventions that may be effective for treating homeless young children living in emergency shelters or transitional housing. It begins with a discussion of family homelessness in the United States, and continues with a review of the literature on relationships among maternal mental health, children’s mental health, and homelessness. While homelessness is associated with increased maternal mental illness, the association between homelessness and children’s wellbeing appears to be mediated by the mother-child attachment relationship. Therefore, a discussion of attachment theory, attachment in homeless and impoverished children, and the …

The main goal of the paper is to assess the awareness and understanding of the so-called shared mobility among the representatives of car sharing operators and cities in one of the first studies on this issue undertaken in Poland. We asked two groups of stakeholders in Poland – car sharing operators (7 companies) and cities (19 entities) – about the current state and the future of shared mobility. Research was conducted using web questionnaires between January and April 2018. The main observations are as follows. Firstly, public transport is one of the main areas determining citizens’ quality of life, and …

Assessing The Relevance Of Cloud Computing For Micro, Small And Medium Enterprises In The Northern Region Of India, Devesh Kumar, Harsh Vardhan Samalia, Piyush Verma
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Micro Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in developing economies like India face many challenges in the form of limited capital, lack of skilled manpower, and low ICT usage. Due to these constraints, MSMEs are not able to reap various benefits which modern ICT solutions offer. In such a scenario, cloud computing can be an appropriate option for such MSMEs which are looking for improving their internal processes, enhancing communication with clients and business partners, and extending their market reach through modern ICT solutions with minimum investment and efforts. Cloud computing is an innovative technique of providing the required information and …

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
The aim of the article is to analyze the possibility of the usage of tax incentives in the NewConnect market development process, which should increase access to non-bank financing by companies, and thus increasing their investment potential. The following research hypotheses were positively verified in the article: (i) tax incentives can be an important factor favouring the development of the capital market for SMEs, (ii) tax incentives are already used in different capital markets for SMSs and support their development, (iii) the application of the tax incentives for SMEs capital market would not constitute significant reduction in the state budget’s …
The Impact Of Control Preferences Fit Between Employees And Their Supervisors On Employee Job Satisfaction, Anna Olga Kuźmińska, Daniel Pazura
The Impact Of Control Preferences Fit Between Employees And Their Supervisors On Employee Job Satisfaction, Anna Olga Kuźmińska, Daniel Pazura
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Control preferences differentiate people with regard to their inclination towards a certain division of control in an interdependent situation. Social situations that block one’s capability to exert a preferred type of control can be evaluated as unpleasant and provoke their abandonment. We hypothesized that incompatibility of control preferences between leaders and followers would result in diminished job satisfaction among the followers. Such incompatibility could stem from either discrepancy between leader-follower control preferences (e.g. a discrepant preference for collaboration) or too great a similarity (e.g. a similarly strong preference for domination). In our study, 203 participants rated their own control preferences …
Evangelizing Neoliberalism Through Megachurches In Latin America And The United States, William O. Collazo
Evangelizing Neoliberalism Through Megachurches In Latin America And The United States, William O. Collazo
Dissertations and Theses
The most prominent and influential feature of worldwide Evangelicalism, is the megachurch. In Latin America megachurches have proliferated and grown in political influence when they first came into contact with neoliberalism during Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile. As Latin America's poor first migrated out of rural areas into Latin American cities, then north, to the United States, they have brought with them their religion. Increasingly, this religion is Protestant, evangelical, and for many, it is Pentecostalism. Misunderstood by the early literature on Pentecostalism, is the strain of neoliberalism that has become infused in the religion's most powerful institution - the megachurch. …

This paper examines the effect of financial liberalization on growth volatility of macroeconomics variable using dynamic panel model for nineteen Asia-Pacific countries for period of 1976–2015. Our results showed that the benefit of financial liberalization in Asia-Pacific region caused by the low volatility of the macroeconomic growth only occur in the group of developed countries, and not occur in the group of developing countries. This proved that the existence of financial liberalization provides no full beneficial effects in Asia-Pacific region.

There is persistent debate between theoretical and empirical findings on the impact of redenomination on economic performance. Hence, this study aims to analyze the impacts of inflation, economic growth, reducing reducing digit (zero number), and stages of redenomination to changes in transaction prices and the number of the transactions using experimental methods. The result showed redenomination could decrease the transaction prices and transaction value. The best conditions to applied redenomination policy was directly in low inflation and high growth.

Mansplaining Vietnam: Male Veterans And America's Popular Image Of The Vietnam War, Gregory A. Daddis
Mansplaining Vietnam: Male Veterans And America's Popular Image Of The Vietnam War, Gregory A. Daddis
History Faculty Articles and Research
Of the more than 3 million Americans who deployed to Southeast Asia during the United States' involvement in the Vietnamese civil war, only some 7,500 were women. Thus, it seems reasonable that memoirs, novels, and film would privilege the male experience when remembering the Vietnam War. Yet in the aftermath of South Vietnam's collapse, Americans' memory of the war narrowed even further, equating the conflict as a whole to the male combat veteran's story. This synthetic literary review examines some of the more lasting works sustaining the popular narrative of Vietnam, one that was constructed, in substantial part, by veterans …
