Mapping And Risk Assessment Of Juniper Encroachment Into A Prairie Landscape, Kyle D. Kaskie Jan 2018

Mapping And Risk Assessment Of Juniper Encroachment Into A Prairie Landscape, Kyle D. Kaskie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Juniper encroachment is a considerable threat to the prairie ecosystems of the Great Plains because it has the potential to alter native grasslands by changing soil characteristics, limiting herbaceous biomass, and hindering native community regeneration. Accurate maps of juniper cover and predictions of areas at risk for future expansion are needed to support proactive management measures. Therefore, our objectives are to: (1) Develop a practical workflow for large-scale juniper mapping using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery and partial unmixing techniques, (2) Compare the classification accuracies from the resulting map based on different juniper density thresholds and different types …

Noise Mapping Of An Educational Environment: A Case Study Of South Dakota State University, Sujan Parajuli Jan 2018

Noise Mapping Of An Educational Environment: A Case Study Of South Dakota State University, Sujan Parajuli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sound is the subjective dimension of what we hear when vibrations reach our ears. Noise, or unwanted sound (mostly human caused), is an objective function of the pressure of those vibrations and is often measured using decibels (dB). Noise is a type of pollution that has both direct and indirect negative impacts on humans, with significant implications for public health plus social, economic, and environmental well-being. Mapping the acoustic landscape (i.e., soundscape) using noise and sound data provides important insights for evaluating, interpreting, understanding, and managing environmental noise. The objectives of this research are threefold; to map the spatial and …

Configural Processing And Social Judgments: Face Inversion Particularly Disrupts Inferences Of Human-Relevant Traits, John Paul Wilson, Steven G. Young, Nicholas O. Rule, Kurt Hugenberg Jan 2018

Configural Processing And Social Judgments: Face Inversion Particularly Disrupts Inferences Of Human-Relevant Traits, John Paul Wilson, Steven G. Young, Nicholas O. Rule, Kurt Hugenberg

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Perceivers tend to strongly agree about the basic trait information that they encode from faces. Although some research has found significant consistency for social inferences from faces viewed at multiple angles, disrupting configural processing can substantially alter the traits attributed to faces. Here, we reconciled these findings by examining how disruptions to configural processing (via face inversion) selectively impairs trait inferences from faces. Across four studies (including a pre-registered replication), we found that inverting faces disrupted inferences about particularly human-relevant traits (trustworthiness and humanness) more than it did for a trait relevant to both human and non-human animals (dominance). These …

Exploring A Possible Mechanism Underlying Stereotype Threat In Adhd, Alexandra Gabor Jan 2018

Exploring A Possible Mechanism Underlying Stereotype Threat In Adhd, Alexandra Gabor

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Previous research has shown that college students with ADHD often struggle academically. The present study explores a possible mechanism underlying stereotype threat in ADHD that may explain the cognitive challenges that those with ADHD face. I examined whether exposing college students with ADHD to positive or negative stereotypes about the disorder would change their self-perceptions and their performance expectations, thereby changing their working memory performance. I hypothesized that those exposed to negative stereotypes would report having more ADHD symptoms, expect to perform worse on tests of working memory, and thus would score lower on working memory measures compared to those …

The Effect Of Music Syntax Therapy On Speech Production In People With Aphasia, Brandi Kordes Jan 2018

The Effect Of Music Syntax Therapy On Speech Production In People With Aphasia, Brandi Kordes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Music is often thought to have medicinal or therapeutic properties across a wide variety of disciplines. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pairing linguistic phrases with the same structure, or syntax, of music affects the speech production of individuals with non-fluent aphasia. Prior to any intervention, four individuals with non-fluent aphasia were assessed to determine mean length of utterance and syntactic complexity in everyday (formulaic) phrases and less-frequently used (non-formulaic) phrases. They were also given a pre-test designed to measure their understanding of music syntax. They then received three one-hour sessions of linguistic syntax therapy and three …

Perception Of Emotion In Music In Adults With Cochlear Implants, Delainey Spragg Jan 2018

Perception Of Emotion In Music In Adults With Cochlear Implants, Delainey Spragg

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Music is an integral aspect of culture that is uniquely tied to our emotions. Previous studies have shown that hearing loss and cochlear implantation have deleterious effects on music and emotion perception, particularly cues related to pitch, melody, and mode. The purpose of this study is to examine acoustic cues that adults with cochlear implants and adults with normal hearing might use to perceive emotion in music (e.g., tempo and pitch range). One adult (ages 18-50 years) with a cochlear implant and 15 adults who have normal hearing were tested. The participants listened to a series of 40 melodies which …

What A Difference A Course Makes: Early College Experience Fosters Flexible And Transcendent Self-Identities, Hannah Faccio Jan 2018

What A Difference A Course Makes: Early College Experience Fosters Flexible And Transcendent Self-Identities, Hannah Faccio

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The college experience is often referenced as a period of ‘finding yourself.’ The concept of self-identity is considered malleable and often formed during time spent at a university or college. One way universities provide opportunity for changes in identity is by offering liberal arts core curriculum courses that allow for the broader thinking of the self, the world, and of one’s experiences. Examples of these courses include Honors and First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses. These courses offer exposure to new topics, ideas, and cultures, which can help students better understand themselves and their place in the world. I hypothesized these courses …

The Social Relationships Of Captive African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Juveniles, Julia Machado Jan 2018

The Social Relationships Of Captive African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Juveniles, Julia Machado

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In situ female African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) live in a fission- fusion society comprised of “core groups” in which adult females associate with their dependent offspring (Archie, Moss, & Alberts, 2006). Most of the animals in a core group are related (Archie et al., 2006), but kinship is not the only contributor to elephant sociality.Pre-reproductive females (allomothers) often assist in the care of calves and juveniles (Lee, 1987). The concept of inclusive fitness (Riedman, 1982) is the favored hypothesis for the evolution of allomothering. Zoological settings, with varied social groupings, provide the perfect opportunity to test this hypothesis (Schulte, …

Effects Of Gesture On Recollection And Description Of Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Mary Kate Richards Jan 2018

Effects Of Gesture On Recollection And Description Of Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Mary Kate Richards

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study examined whether gesture impacts recollection of auditory and visual stimuli. In two experiments, adults were presented with visual images or auditory recordings describing dynamic scenes. After participating in a distraction task, the adults were asked to recall the stimuli they saw or heard in the scenes. In the first experiment, half of the participants were able to gesture naturally when recalling; the others were prohibited from gesturing. Because of the first study’s results, a second study was designed to test how gesture is impacted in different conversational types. In the second study, all participants were able to gesture …

Thriving Beyond Surviving: An Examination Of The Role Support Groups Play In Enhancing Later Cognitive And Social Development Of Pediatric Cancer Patients, Mary Maccarthy Jan 2018

Thriving Beyond Surviving: An Examination Of The Role Support Groups Play In Enhancing Later Cognitive And Social Development Of Pediatric Cancer Patients, Mary Maccarthy

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Adult survivors of pediatric cancer are at risk of developing “late effects” which are deficiencies in physical, cognitive, and/or social functioning that are usually due to long-term cancer treatment and hospitalization at a young age. These late effects can significantly impact survivors’ well-being and prevent them from leading successful, independent lives. The aim of our research was to investigate whether participation in cancer-related support groups could lessen the impact of late effects. Specifically, we examined whether the degree of engagement with cancer-related support groups was related to the level of cognitive and social functioning in adult pediatric cancer survivors. Through …

Environmental Organizations’ Litigation Communication In The Polarized U.S. Political Landscape, Rachel Anderle Jan 2018

Environmental Organizations’ Litigation Communication In The Polarized U.S. Political Landscape, Rachel Anderle

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study analyzes environmental litigation communication in an increasingly polarized political context. Specifically, this project analyzes environmental organizations’ communication strategies and messages related to their litigation efforts in order to better understand how environmental nonprofits frame environmental litigation within the current U. S. political landscape. Multiple data sources (e.g., website content, tweets, and interviews) triangulate the study by providing varying strategic perspectives on organizations’ environmental litigation communication efforts. Results show that nonprofit organizations like the National Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club use a variety of frames that portray litigation as a righteous action used to hold those in power …

Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting Of Confederate Currency And The Impact It Had On Inflation, Raymond Rector Jan 2018

Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting Of Confederate Currency And The Impact It Had On Inflation, Raymond Rector

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis, "Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting of Confederate Currency and The Impact It Had On Inflation" takes an in depth look at the history of counterfeiting the currency of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War by entrepreneurs who saw the introduction of a new currency as an opportunity to profit. The thesis begins by providing background information on several major counterfeiters and their actions before and during the Civil War, as well as other sources of counterfeit bills not normally considered by scholars. The thesis also looks at the effects that this illegitimate increase in the money supply …

When There Are No Therapists: A Psychoeducational Group For People Who Have Experienced Social Disasters, Joshua Miller, Xiying Wang Jan 2018

When There Are No Therapists: A Psychoeducational Group For People Who Have Experienced Social Disasters, Joshua Miller, Xiying Wang

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

A social disaster is when categories of people are politically or socially targeted by virtue of their social identities and suffer ongoing targeting and oppression. Survivors of social disasters often experience similar traumatic symptoms as those of survivors of natural disasters but, unlike most other types of disasters, the threats that caused the trauma and the conditions that undermine survivor’s identity, safety, trust, and sense of control continue to exist. This article shares a model of a psychoeducational group developed and field tested by the authors and used with a group of people targeted because of their queer identities.

The Origin Of Dark Mats At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408) Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, Sean Stcherbinine Jan 2018

The Origin Of Dark Mats At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408) Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, Sean Stcherbinine

All Master's Theses

The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site is a precontact archaeological site located in the upland forest soils of Mount Rainier National Park. Site stratigraphy is complicated, consisting of tephra deposits from mostly known origins that are intercalated with dark sediments of unknown origin, referred to here as dark mats. Precontact occupation has been split previously into two components based on the ambiguous depositional history of the dark mats, notably their unknown parent material, depositional environment, and relationship with adjacent tephra strata. Stratigraphic samples from excavation units, features, and one off-site excavation unit was used to investigate these data gaps. Grain …

Sexual Violence On Campus: No Evidence That Studies Are Biased Due To Self-Selection, Marina N. Rosenthal, Jennifer J. Freyd Jan 2018

Sexual Violence On Campus: No Evidence That Studies Are Biased Due To Self-Selection, Marina N. Rosenthal, Jennifer J. Freyd

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Numerous research studies suggest that at least one in five female college students is sexually assaulted while enrolled. However, many studies exploring sexual violence prevalence on campus use methodology permitting students to self-select into the study based on interest in the topic (i.e., students receive an email offering them the opportunity to participate in a study on sexual violence). Self-selection may bias these prevalence estimates of campus sexual violence. To explore this issue, we surveyed two samples of college women on their experiences of sexual assault. We recruited Sample 1 in a typical way: by emailing a randomly selected subset …

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Refugees frequently experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress and depression, which impede their acculturation in the new host country where they are resettling. There are few longitudinal studies investigating predictors of mental health and acculturation during the early postmigration period. We conducted a longitudinal study of 298 Iraqi refugees, assessing them upon arrival to the U.S. and 1 year after migration. Premigration trauma was associated with increased PTSD and depressive symptoms at baseline, and with decreased acculturation 1 year later. Resilience was associated with depressive symptoms at 1-year follow-up, but not with other resettlement outcomes (PTSD symptoms, English-language skills, or acculturation). …

Are Indigenous Peoples Better Off Under Evo Morales? Towards Understanding The Effects Of Decolonization Policy On Social Inclusion In Bolivia, Cailin Campbell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This undergraduate thesis examines how to measure the influence of the Evo Morales administration’s decolonization policies on the social inclusion of indigenous peoples in Bolivia. Given the ongoing colonial legacy of exclusion of indigenous peoples in Bolivia, the Morales administration has created a national agenda to decolonize the state and improve conditions for the marginalized, oppressed, and excluded indigenous peoples. In examining the nacionalización de los hidrocarburos, the ley de la reconducción comunitaria y reforma agraria, the plan nacional de desarrollo, the ley de la educación, the ley de deslinde, the ley de marco de …

Effects Of Yoga On The Motor Skills Of A Ten-Year-Old Male With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amber Schmitt Jan 2018

Effects Of Yoga On The Motor Skills Of A Ten-Year-Old Male With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amber Schmitt

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD} is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is typically diagnosed in childhood due to the presence of atypical development, social interactions, and repetitive stereotypical patterns of behavior. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a yoga intervention on a ten-year-old male diagnosed with ASD. It was hypothesized that the yoga intervention on select instructed poses would increase both pose duration and pose performance and that the results would generalize to longer pose duration and better pose performance on non-instructed poses. Pre-intervention assessments of motor functioning were administered, including the Movement ABC, BOT-2, TGMD, …
