Monografie/Monographs

Cross Calibration And Validation Of Landsat 8 Oli And Sentinel 2a Msi, M. M. Farhad
Cross Calibration And Validation Of Landsat 8 Oli And Sentinel 2a Msi, M. M. Farhad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work describes a proposed radiometric cross calibration between the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel 2A Multispectral Instrument (MSI) sensors. The cross calibration procedure involves i) correction of the MSI data to account for spectral band differences with the OLI; and ii) correction of BRDF effects in the data from both sensors using a new model accounting for the view zenith/azimuth angles in addition to the solar zenith/view angles. Following application of the spectral and BRDF corrections, standard least-squares linear regression is used to determine the cross calibration gain and offset in each band. Uncertainties related to …
Personality In Politics, Rachael Fix
Personality In Politics, Rachael Fix
Honors Program Theses
Personality has always played a big part in politics. It is one of the first things voters take into account when they decide which politician to cast their votes for. While personality may certainly play into what kind of person decides to run for a public office, what about the voters? If personality impacts when candidates decide whether or not to run for office, it could also be that personality influences whom voters decide should take office. Perhaps certain personality traits could even be used as a predictor for whether or not someone will vote for a certain politician or …
President Trump's Transgender Military Ban: A Legal Analysis, Kailee Martens
President Trump's Transgender Military Ban: A Legal Analysis, Kailee Martens
Honors Program Theses
On August 25, 2017, President Trump announced a policy banning transgender individuals from military service. Transgender individuals had been banned from military service for most of history, but were given the right to serve in 2016 under Obama’s presidency. Trump’s ban was a reversal of this policy of inclusion. The ban on transgender military service has received both support and criticism. It has been challenged in the court system by transgender individuals currently serving in the military, though these cases have not yet reached the Supreme Court. In order to understand what the Supreme Court might decide in a case …

Characterizing Reflective Practice In Psychotherapists' Practice And Its Relationship With Experiential Avoidance, Alison R. Thomas
Characterizing Reflective Practice In Psychotherapists' Practice And Its Relationship With Experiential Avoidance, Alison R. Thomas
Psychology Department Dissertations
Reflective practice (RP) is an essential element of all professional work, including psychotherapy. However, RP can also cause feelings of anxiety and discomfort that may be barriers to engaging in RP. This research aimed to 1) describe the relationship between between RP and experiential avoidance in a sample of independent licensed and experiential psychotherapists, 2) explore among psychotherapists the previous finding among physicians that greater years of practice (YOP) and age predict lower levels of RP (Mamede & Schmidt, 2005), and 3) describe reported barriers to and supports of engaging in RP. An online survey was used to collect data …
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Public Policy On Spatial Concentration And Company Linkages In The Martitime Sector, Eoin G. Moynihan
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Public Policy On Spatial Concentration And Company Linkages In The Martitime Sector, Eoin G. Moynihan
PhDs
Industry clusters (Porter, 1990, 1998b) have been the focus of numerous studies, and public policy programmes in recent decades (Ketels, 2013b). The maritime sector in particular has seen a number of maritime cluster organisations established in recent years as policy tools for regional development. Cluster analysis has focused on identifying and mapping clusters, yet comparatively little research has been undertaken on the optimal structure for cluster organisations (or initiatives) as additionality policy tools, to achieve the aim of strengthening cluster linkages and boosting the innovation capacity of cluster firms.
Therefore this research addresses the following questions:
1. To what extent …

The Development And Validation Of The Physical Appearance Comparison Scale–3 (Pacs-3), Lauren M. Schaefer, Joel Kevin Thompson
The Development And Validation Of The Physical Appearance Comparison Scale–3 (Pacs-3), Lauren M. Schaefer, Joel Kevin Thompson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Appearance comparison processes are implicated in the development of body-image disturbance and disordered eating. The Physical Appearance Comparison Scale—Revised (PACS−R) assesses the simple frequency of appearance comparisons; however, research has suggested that other aspects of appearance comparisons (e.g., comparison direction) may moderate the association between comparisons and their negative outcomes. In the current study, the PACS−R was revised to examine aspects of comparisons with relevance to body-image and eating outcomes. Specifically, the measure was modified to examine (a) dimensions of physical appearance relevant to men and women (i.e., weight−shape, muscularity, and overall physical appearance), (b) comparisons with proximal and distal …

Effect Of Androgen Deprivation Therapy On Sexual Function And Bother In Men With Prostate Cancer: A Controlled Comparison, Kristine A. Donovan, Brian D. Gonzalez, Ashley M. Nelson, Mayer N. Fishman, Babu Zachariah, Paul B. Jacobsen
Psychology Faculty Publications
Objectives: The adverse sexual effects of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) on men with prostate cancer have been well described. Less well known is the relative degree of sexual dysfunction and bother associated with ADT compared to other primary treatment modalities such as radical prostatectomy. We sought to describe the trajectory and relative magnitude of changes in sexual function and bother in men on ADT and to examine demographic and clinical predictors of ADT's adverse sexual effects.
Methods: Prostate cancer patients treated with ADT (n = 60) completed assessments of sexual function and sexual bother 3 times during a 1‐year period …

Institute on Aging Publications
Adult foster homes (AFH) are small, residential settings that are licensed to provide assistance to older persons or adults with disabilities. These settings may offer a home-like setting in which residents’ independence, personal choice, and decision-making are promoted. Homes may be licensed for one to five residents and must be staffed 24-hours daily to respond to residents’ scheduled and unscheduled needs or requests. Adult foster homes offer a variety of services, including daily meals, housekeeping and laundry, assistance with personal care needs, medication administration, monitoring of health conditions, communication with residents’ health care providers, and social and recreational activities.

Facebook: Changing The Face Of Communication Research, Paul A. Soukup
Communication
The ubiquitous social networking site, Facebook, registered over one billion active users in 2012 and continues to grow (Facebook, 2018a). Not surprisingly, communication researchers around the world noticed this phenomenal shift in communication practice, a practice aided by a combination of digital communication tools—easy to access communication networks, low cost bandwidth, smartphones, application features, and so on. These developments transformed the understanding of “social networks,” turning them from face-to-face interactions among small groups into world spanning digital connections, from networks of business or professional associations supported by analogue or “old” communication practices (such as letter writing, telephone calls, or conference …

Soap Opera», Molto Più Che Intrattenimento: Storia E Sviluppo Di Ungenere Di Culto, Paul A. Soukup
Communication
Marital Factors Associated With Weight-Related Behavior In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jenna Ellison
Marital Factors Associated With Weight-Related Behavior In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jenna Ellison
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is a major health concern in the United States. Whereas bariatric surgery is effective, 10-40% of post-operative patients struggle to reach or maintain their goal weight (Elder & Wolfe, 2007). The current study investigated the within-person relations between marital quality and weight-related behaviors using a daily diary design. Length of relationship, time since surgery, and participant sex were explored as moderators. Participants were 94 post-operative bariatric surgery patients. Eligible participants completed an online baseline questionnaire, followed by a one-week online daily diary in which they responded to questions about the quality of their marriage, whether they engaged in physical …
Economic Integration In North America: Changes In Us Trade Policy And The Effects On Texas Regional Exports To Mexico, Jorge Eduardo Mendoza
Economic Integration In North America: Changes In Us Trade Policy And The Effects On Texas Regional Exports To Mexico, Jorge Eduardo Mendoza
Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research
Texas is the leading US state exporter to Mexico, trading oil products, automobile components and electronics. The USMCA will impose a restructuring of the North American supply chains to meet the new input content requirements. In order to evaluate the impact of the changes in tariffs arising from the new rules of origin requirements, an econometric model with different tariff scenarios was estimated. The estimations indicate that the distance to Texas and the size of the economies of the states of Mexico are factors that impact Texas exports to Mexico. Tariffs under the USMCA would have a minor but positive …

Fostering Organizational Integrity Through Departmental Program Reviews, James T. Petre, David S. Heineman, Angela G. La Valley
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Conducting a departmental program review can be a stressful and arduous process. At the same time, the final report can provide valuable insights. The challenges and benefits of program reviews have been well noted by scholars. We seek to add to this conversation by arguing that program reviews can prove beneficial by fostering and maintaining organizational integrity. In our essay, we review relevant literature on program reviews, provide an explanation of organizational integrity, present a narrative of our program review process, and explain how this process fostered organizational integrity.

“Field” Research: Letting Corporate Communication Professionals’ Stories Inform Curriculum Development, Mary Stairs Vaughn, Jimmy Davis, Jeremy Fyke, Nathan Webb
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
We interviewed 25 corporate communication professionals to learn the competencies they see as necessary for entering and succeeding in their field. We then used what we learned to inform course-level and program-level changes to our corporate communication major. Our results detail: (1) the range of tactical, strategic, and dispositional competencies the interviewees identified as necessary for a career in corporate communication, (2) three categories of strategies for transitioning into the field, and (3) the subsequent curricular and course-level changes that resulted from our interviews. Our study concludes that students need broad training for a wide-ranging and rapidly-changing field, and they …

Building Bridges On Local Soil: Locality And Community-Engaged Research And Pedagogy, Craig T. Maier
Building Bridges On Local Soil: Locality And Community-Engaged Research And Pedagogy, Craig T. Maier
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Over a decade ago, Oster-Aaland, Sellnow, Nelson, and Pearson (2004), following up an earlier survey published in JACA (Sellnow and Oster, 1999), found that communityengaged research and pedagogy had become an established part of the communication curriculum. As a special issue of Peer Review has suggested (Carey, 2017), interest in service learning has only grown, and the increasing emphasis on civic engagement and community development has clear implications for the communication discipline. Courses and projects that address pressing or emerging social problems not only raise students’ ethical awareness but also allow students to build research and professional skills that build …
Building Bridges Between Communication Studies And Community: A Praxis-Approach, Jill K. Burk
Building Bridges Between Communication Studies And Community: A Praxis-Approach, Jill K. Burk
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
In an effort to demonstrate the field’s usefulness and essentiality to our world, communication studies’ praxis orientation needs to be clearly pursued and publicized. Implementing service-learning into the communication studies classroom could achieve this goal. Through extending the scholarship of Britt (2012) and Pollack (1999), this article proposes that communication educators ground and articulate their service-learning pedagogy from three different paradigmatic lenses; the experiential paradigm, the social change paradigm, and the citizenship paradigm. Moreover, communication administrators ought to understand the different paradigmatic foundations, which drive service-learning enactment, in an effort to not privilege one perspective over another. The service-learning literature …
Accepting The Challenge: A Case Study In Pedagogical Inquiry, Sarah C. Worley
Accepting The Challenge: A Case Study In Pedagogical Inquiry, Sarah C. Worley
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Higher education has been criticized for not fulfilling its democratic purpose—that is, to prepare students for citizenship, not just careers. Longo and Gibson (2016) argue that “as access to higher education has increased, many colleges and universities ironically have become more detached from their public missions,” leading to the increasing separation between learning and social purpose (p. 61). Many schools and departments have already begun the hard work of reevaluation and critical reflection in response to such criticism and are helping to reinvent American higher education (Hartley & Hollander, 2005). Three such examples are communication programs featured as case studies …
University High Impact Practices: Bridges That Support The Path To Student’S Professional Identity, Naomi Bell O’Neil
University High Impact Practices: Bridges That Support The Path To Student’S Professional Identity, Naomi Bell O’Neil
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Success for universities is often measured by student graduation rates and career placement. Most graduates are at a developmental stage of achieving their psychosocial identity where they have a sense of self and their own will, but Erikson (1968) purported that identity continues to evolve through post-adolescent years—“beyond identity” (p. 135). This essay proposes that graduates’ development of professional identities is instrumental for successful careers in the marketplace. University high-impact practices contributes to the evolution of professional identity and cultivates students’ connection with marketplace professionals. Communication and behavior play concurrent roles in the development of many facets of identity, which …
Administering Community-Engaged Pedagogies: Toward An Anticipatory Approach To Problems, Todd Kelshaw
Administering Community-Engaged Pedagogies: Toward An Anticipatory Approach To Problems, Todd Kelshaw
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Community-engaged pedagogies are optimism-borne. But problems inevitably arise, and administrators/practitioners might react in ways that hamper projects’ potentials. This essay addresses the nature of problems to be expected during community-engaged work; the need for an “anticipatory” administrative approach; and how a communication-centric orientation affords particular capacities. Notably, communication-disciplinary community engagement administrators are particularly poised to manage problems in anticipatory ways.
