Le recueil d’essais que voici réunit des textes inédits et publiés dans des ouvrages collectifs, des conférences, des interventions lors de colloques.
“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft
“No Rhyme Or Reason:” Surveying Legislative Records Retention Practices In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Nahali R. Croft
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Because the records of individual Members of the House of Representatives are considered personal property, what happens to those records once a Member leaves office is up to him or her. Legislative records, particularly files and reports used to develop policy and draft bills, have historical value and are one of the types of files most used in current Congressional collections, as they point toward legislative intent. The House Records Management Manual for Members suggests that offices permanently maintain these types of files. This study reveals to what extent House offices are preserving records that provide future researchers with legislative …
The Library Of Virginia, Local Records, And The Civil War, Eddie Woodward
The Library Of Virginia, Local Records, And The Civil War, Eddie Woodward
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Virginia’s city and county court records are not only the resources used to write and interpret history, but they have a history in and of themselves--if they survived. Unfortunately, because of records' legal and administrative importance, they are prime targets during a war; destroying these materials not only erases history, but can also cause a great amount of disruption, confusion, and anxiety among residents. This was the case in 1861, after Virginia seceded from the Union and its state capital also became the national capital of the Confederate States of America. As the courthouses were seen as the head or …

Involvement Of Social Media Profiles In The Hiring Process, Theresa Lant, Ashley Mejias
Student and Faculty Research Days
In recent years, social media has become a popular tool in the recruitment and selection process for employers. Many companies see it as a more cost efficient screening process than traditional background checks and interviews. However, its’ use comes with a greater risk for the company and potential applicants in terms of privacy violation and discrimination. This article will examine the rising popularity of the use of social media in the recruitment and selection process. In addition, it will explore the role social media plays in the hiring process from the viewpoint of employees in their respective companies versus undergraduate …
An Analysis Of The Changing Modus Operandi Of Terrorist Attacks In Europe, Hasan Arslan, Elizabeth Molloy
An Analysis Of The Changing Modus Operandi Of Terrorist Attacks In Europe, Hasan Arslan, Elizabeth Molloy
Student and Faculty Research Days
There is a sharp increase in both the number of incidents and the deaths caused by different types of attacks in Europe recently. The assailants claimed these attacks either on behalf of Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) or as "lone wolves" with no direct affiliation to the ISIL. However, there has been some change in the way some of the attacks were carried out. Also, there was a shift in their target selection. Security experts and authorities have indicated significant factors contributing to this development. This paper examines the apparent alarming trend in the change of terrorist modus …
Predictive Modeling Of The Non-Profit Sector In The Us, Francisco J. Quevedo, Andrea K. Quevedo-Prince
Predictive Modeling Of The Non-Profit Sector In The Us, Francisco J. Quevedo, Andrea K. Quevedo-Prince
Student and Faculty Research Days
The Non-Profit Sector contributes almost $1 trillion to the US economy, representing 5.4% of GDP, and generating over 12 million jobs in 2017. Yi (2010) suggests that a better understanding of the factors that affect fundraising should be of great interest to policy makers, and fundraisers. However, the workings of the sector are subject of much debate. Matsunaga, Yamauchi and Okuyama (2010) relate its size to the Theory of Government Failure. Sokolowski (2013) proposes that government funding does have a positive effect on revenues. Curry, Rodin and Carlson (2012) suggested they swing with GDP, but, Berman, Brooks …

Copyright protection attaches automatically to original works you create, whether a poem, photograph, painting, song, video, or essay. Copyright limits what others can do with your creative work and protects your original work from, for example, being compiled or reused and sold for profit. If you hold the copyright—and didn’t, say, create the original work in an employment context where it may be subject to being a work for hire—you may want to allow others to use your work for particular purposes. You could individually negotiate a license granting rights to each person, which would undoubtedly take more and more …

Advisor: Dr. Paul Toro
Major: Psychology (Clinical)
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Each year in America, between 20,000 and 30,000 youths reach an age, typically 18 years, when they must exit the foster care system due to age restrictions, in a process referred to as aging out (U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). These youths disproportionately experience a host of negative outcomes, including high rates of homelessness and precarious housing, high levels of psychological distress and victimization, increased risk of substance abuse, lower …
Preterm Birth And Infant Mortality Among African American And Caucasian Women: A Critique Of The Systematic Devaluing Of African American Women And Infants, Catherine E. Cooper
Preterm Birth And Infant Mortality Among African American And Caucasian Women: A Critique Of The Systematic Devaluing Of African American Women And Infants, Catherine E. Cooper
The Graduate Review
Health disparities are a persistent reality for minority groups in the United States with serious, and sometimes lethal, consequences. The disparate rates of preterm births and infant mortality between African-American and Caucasian women is a well-documented but largely unaddressed occurrence falling into this category. The complex systems that contribute to the perpetuation of this health disparity are explored with particular attention to the intersection of race, culture and socioeconomic status. The influence of personal health beliefs and often-over-emphasized role of behavior are also investigated in an effort to examine why there has been an inadequate response to this problem in …
Determinants Of Health Disparities Among African And Caucasian Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Renal Cell Carcinoma, And End-Stage Renal Disease, Kathleen Cosgrove
Determinants Of Health Disparities Among African And Caucasian Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Renal Cell Carcinoma, And End-Stage Renal Disease, Kathleen Cosgrove
The Graduate Review
Many studies have confirmed the disparity that black patients have an increased prevalence of severely impaired kidney function compared to whites. Without dialysis, or a kidney transplant, chronic kidney disease will progress to a fatal prognosis of end-stage kidney failure. The most common type of kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma, occurs most often in adult males, age 50-70. Diabetes and hypertension are two of the most determinant factors of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States, which most often develops following a chronic kidney disease (CKD) diagnosis. The poor are most susceptible to disease due to high risk community …
Mindfulness Practitioners Clarify The Concept Of “Re-Perceiving”: A Qualitative Interview Study, Josephine Madonna
Mindfulness Practitioners Clarify The Concept Of “Re-Perceiving”: A Qualitative Interview Study, Josephine Madonna
The Graduate Review
Mindfulness, cultivated through various types of meditative practices, is a way of being which intentionally focuses on non-judgmental, present-moment experience. In Western psychology, self is typically reified, i.e., treated as a fixed entity. In contrast, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) – the evidence-based program that teaches such meditative practices – implicitly de-reifies “the self.” MBSR encourages practitioners (and psychologists) to reframe self as fluid: as a process of perceptual transitions experienced moment by moment. This shift in perception has been termed reperceiving by MBSR scholars. This project explores whether individual meditators report this shift. Semi-structured interviews (N = 20) were …
Utilizing Animal Metaphors In Child Psychotherapy: An Integrative Approach For Therapists, Tricia J. Gordon
Utilizing Animal Metaphors In Child Psychotherapy: An Integrative Approach For Therapists, Tricia J. Gordon
The Graduate Review
Despite a plethora of therapeutic approaches utilized when working with children, there is still a need for empirically based, child-centered, developmentally appropriate methodologies. This research aims to provide a greater understanding of the use of action-based metaphors when working with clients in early to middle childhood, while integrating various treatment modalities. While there are a countless number of metaphorical possibilities, there is a lack of research with a focus on the specific use of animal metaphors in child therapy. This child-friendly integrative approach proposes that therapists adjust their current working model to see the client as a whole, while integrating …

Analyzing And Interpreting Data From Piaac’S Problem Solving In Technology Rich Environments (Pstre) Assessment And Library Use Survey: Quantitative Results, Jill Castek, Gloria Jacobs, Cindy Gibbon, Tyler Frank, Amy Honisett, Judy Anderson
Data
This document contains an explanation of the quantitative analysis conducted using data from a researcher-designed library use survey and PIAAC's PSTRE survey accessed through OECD's Education and Skills Online portal. Data were collected in two phases and are presented using descriptive statistics and through a latent class analysis. The latent class analysis allowed for the examination of the relationship between library activities, library website use, and PSTRE scores. Results indicated that library website use is strong predictor of higher PSTRE scores and competency in digital problem solving.

Defining Digital Problem Solving, Jill Castek, Gloria Jacobs, Cindy Gibbon, Tyler Frank, Amy Honisett, Judy Anderson
Digital Problem Solving Toolkit
This document introduces the definition of digital problem solving that emerged from a three year long research project. Digital problem solving is described as being related to, but unique from, digital literacies and basic digital skills. Specifically, digital problem solving involves the use of the skills, strategies, and approaches (including mindsets) needed to navigate online in everyday contexts, including the library, and use novel resources, tools, and interfaces in efficient and flexible ways to accomplish personal and professional goals. Authors describe how the definition of digital problem solving was developed and applications within libraries, Adult Education, and Lifelong Learning.

A Pre-Registered Multi-Replication Examination Of The Independent And Interdependent Effects Of Big Five Traits And Facets In Predicting Physical Activity Via A Cybernetic Framework, Phuong Vo
Wayne State University Dissertations
Personality traits are important and reliable predictors of health outcomes and health-related behaviors, yet examining only main effects does not allow an examination of possible synergistic effects of traits (and their related lower-order facets) on health behaviors (Hampson & Friedman, 2008). Guided by Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T; DeYoung, 2015), the present study examined three samples of U.S. adults recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (total N = 2879) to test main and moderated effects of broad Big Five traits and trait facets on physical activity while accounting relevant background factors such as age, sex, education, income, body mass index, health …
Early Results Demonstrate The Importance Of Early Treatment Of Hiv And The Feasibility And Acceptability Of Community-Based Antiretroviral Treatment Delivery For Female Sex Workers In Tanzania, Project Soar
HIV and AIDS
Project SOAR in collaboration with the National AIDS Control Program of the government of Tanzania, National Institute of Medical Research, and Jhpiego’s Sauti Program, is conducting implementation science research to investigate the delivery of community-based antiretroviral treatment (ART) services to female sex workers (FSWs) in Tanzania. This brief summarizes key findings from a baseline survey administered to a cohort of FSWs enrolled in the study, qualitative interviews with FSWs conducted three months after the start of the community-based ART services, and routine monitoring data. Early findings support the feasibility and acceptability of Sauti’s community-based antiretroviral treatment model—important first steps in …
Masculinity And Men’S Bodies In Fairy Tales: Youth, Violence, And Transformation, Jeana Jorgensen
Masculinity And Men’S Bodies In Fairy Tales: Youth, Violence, And Transformation, Jeana Jorgensen
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The study of masculinity in fairy tales lags behind the study of femininity, a lack this article addresses by reviewing the intersections of masculinity studies and feminist theory and using a dataset based on canonical fairy-tale collections to empirically tease out representations of men's bodies in fairy tales. Crucial findings include the significance of youth, physical stature, violence, and transformations in depictions of men's bodies in fairy tales, which contribute to a construction of hegemonic masculinity as fragile yet the unmarked norm.

Stop And Frisk Among College-Educated Police Officers In Suburban Western Pennsylvania: An Exploratory Study, John F. Swank
Stop And Frisk Among College-Educated Police Officers In Suburban Western Pennsylvania: An Exploratory Study, John F. Swank
School of Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
Stop-and-frisk has become a significant issue of debate in recent years with both the constitutionality and effectiveness of the practice coming into question. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has especially come under scrutiny for their stop-and-frisk program in recent years with researchers finding that minorities and the disadvantaged were being targeted by the NYPD during stop-and-frisk encounters. The majority of the research had focused on New York City, and thus there was little data on the use of stop-and-frisk in other jurisdictions. Moreover, there were few studies that examined officer characteristics, such as college education, agency size, etc., …
Correctional Academic Education: A Qualitative Inquiry Of Quality, Value, And Effectiveness, Michelle Currier
Correctional Academic Education: A Qualitative Inquiry Of Quality, Value, And Effectiveness, Michelle Currier
School of Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to capture and describe the lived experiences of correctional academic teachers who provide educational services in facilities in the northeastern region of the United States through qualitative phenomenological inquiry. This study strove to provide a deeper understanding of correctional teachers’ perceptions concerning the mission, value, efficacy, and importance of the work that they perform, as well as the resulting approaches they take, in their academic classrooms. Through phenomenological data analysis, the study assessed teachers’ perceptions of the rehabilitative ideal, as well as the role of correctional education program offerings within a rehabilitative framework.
