Politics Of International Recognition: The Case Of Aspirant States, Wais Mehrabi Jan 2018

Politics Of International Recognition: The Case Of Aspirant States, Wais Mehrabi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Separatist polities that have managed to break away from their parent states and meet the basic criteria for statehood seek other states’ formal recognition to achieve full statehood and membership of the international society. There is no established pattern to explain external recognition of statehood empirically and theoretically. Kosovo declared independence and attained widespread recognition while Somaliland, despite successful separation from Somalia, has not. What factors explain states’ recognition decisions, or the selective conferring of recognition? The existing literature indicates that national interests, domestic politics, systematic level factors, international legal and normative standards, regime type, and identity politics shape recognition …

Residential Proximity To Electronic Dance Music Nightclubs And Associations With Substance Use, Sexual Behaviors, And Related Problems, Mance E. Buttram, Maria E. Pagano, Steven P. Kurtz

CAHSS Faculty Articles

This study examines the association between proximity of place of residence to preferred nightclub and substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problems, among a sample of 498 young adult substance users in Miami who report regular nightclub participation. Hierarchal linear models and logistic regressions were constructed to examine the impact of residential proximity to preferred nightclub on risk behaviors. Compared with participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub, participants residing further away reported higher intensities of alcohol and cocaine use (p < .01), greater condomless vaginal sex frequencies (p < .001), and more substance dependence symptoms (p < .05). Conversely, participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub had higher likelihood of arrest history (p < .05) than participants residing further away. Results suggest that participants residing further from their preferred nightclubs may be more invested in the nightclub outing and, therefore, engage in more risk behaviors.

Sizing Up Worker Center Income (2008-2014): A Study Of Revenue Size, Stability, And Stream, Leslie C. Gates, Kati L. Griffith, Jonathan Kim, Zane Mokhiber, Joseph C. Bazler

Sociology Faculty Scholarship

Since the publication of Janice Fine’s path-breaking book, Worker Centers: Communities at the Edge o f the Dream in 2006, scholars and commentators on the left and the right of the political spectrum have grappled with how to characterize these emergent worker organizations on the US labor relations scene. This chapter deepens our understanding of the nature of worker centers by examining the funding trends that underlay the wide range of experimental organizing and advocacy strategies highlighted in other chapters of this volume. Undoubtedly, to emerge and survive, these organizations need money (Bobo and Pabellon 2016). But how financially stable …

Discerning Service: The Leader As Servant And The Ignatian Tradition, Luke Lavin Jan 2018

Discerning Service: The Leader As Servant And The Ignatian Tradition, Luke Lavin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Throughout his spiritual autobiography, Ignatius of Loyola humbly refers to himself as the pilgrim. Ironically, it is a group of pilgrims in Herman Hesse s The Journey to The East that inspires Robert Greenleaf s understanding of the servant as leader. In the late 16th century, Ignatius witnessed and was a product of the turbulent European Reformation the reason infusion of the Renaissance, and the expansive globalization of the Age of Exploration. Greenleaf, an executive for AT&T throughout the mid-twentieth century, witnessed the American countercultural movement of the nineteen sixties and the institutionalization of the American workplace. Both men provided …

My Father As A Lifelong Servant-Leader, Jonathan Potter Jan 2018

My Father As A Lifelong Servant-Leader, Jonathan Potter

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

My father, Ted Potter, is supposedly retired. He has had a long, interesting, and varied career, first as a teacher, then as a real estate agent, broker, appraiser, and consultant. Although my dad has not formally studied the literature of servant-leadership, I believe his life and work exemplify much of what Greenleaf and other scholars have conceptualized as characteristic of the servant-leader approach to interpersonal and organizational management and leadership. Over the course of a few days at the end of summer, as the leaves on the trees began turning on their fall flare, I engaged my dad in an …

The Anchor Of Servant-Leadership: Julius Nyerere And The Virtue Of Humility, Peter Mulinge

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The emergence of the concept of servant-leadership initiated a new era of moral emphasis in the field of leadership, which was and still is dominated by self-serving models of leadership. When Robert Greenleaf (1970) conceived servant-leadership as a philosophy and practical model of leadership, he highlighted the need for a better approach to leadership, one that embraces the notion of serving others as the number one priority. He visualized leaders who would take a more a holistic approach to work, promote a sense of community, and to share power in decision making (SanFacon & Spears 2011, p. 115). Fundamentally, servantleadership …

Servant-Leadership As Loving Leadership: Explorations For Catholic Health Ministry, Michael D. Cox

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Leading within Catholic health care is a growing struggle as the health care environment undergoes monumental change. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a significant force in shaping health care policy, lists its five primary focus areas on its website: Improvement Capability; Patient and Family Experience; Patient Safety; Quality, Cost and Value; and Triple Aim for Populations (IHI, n.d.). Successfully addressing each area provides unique challenges to leaders because each area demands significant changes to individual behavior and organizational structure. Added to this is the reality that any improvement in one area likely adds complexity to another area. For example, …

The Invisible Dimension Of Leadership And Culture: Part I, Paul Nakai, Dustin W. Seale

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The ultimate success of any venture and organization is determined by how it is perceived by those it employs as well as by those it serves. Much of the focus to maximize this effect has been localized to the behaviors, attitudes and feelings that seem to accompany this phenomenon. There have been numerous endeavors that train customer service skills, listening, coaching, positive attitudes, quality, etc. Each intervention has yielded insightful results, but have they been able to fulfill their maximal intention?

Actively Engaging With Patrons On Social Media, Kelley Cotter, Sara Baron

Library Faculty Scholarship

Using social media for outreach entails more than just creating engaging content— it also means actively engaging with patrons. In our experience, using social media well involves a heavy emphasis on two-way communication with patrons. We have built a social media presence that, above all, seeks to build relationships with our patrons. It provides a venue for building relationships with both those who already closely associate with the library and those who do not. Establishing and strengthening ties to the library makes patrons more likely to share their positive perceptions of us with friends, family, colleagues, and coworkers. Because word-ofmouth …

Some common themes within the history of food and literature include starvation, famine, gluttony, feasting, commensality, hospitality, religion, gender, and class, and indeed food also functions as a complex signifier of national, racial, and cultural identity. Despite the growing international scholarship of food in literature (Bevan 1988; Schofield 1989; Ellmann 1993; Applebaum 2006; Piatti-Farnell 2011; Gilbert and Porter 2015; Boyce and Fitzpatrick 2017; Piatti-Farnell and Lee Brien 2018), until recently, Ireland appeared “as only the smallest of dots on the map of high gastronomy” (Goldstein 2014, xi). Most international collections discuss the canonical Irish writings of James Joyce and of …
