Paths To Enlightenment: Constructing Buddhist Identities In Mainland China And The United States, Di Di Jan 2018

Paths To Enlightenment: Constructing Buddhist Identities In Mainland China And The United States, Di Di

Sociology

How do national contexts influence the construction of religious identity in faith communities? In this article, I examine the construction of Buddhist identities in two similar ethnic Chinese Mahayana Buddhist temples but in distinct national contexts, one in mainland China and the other in the United States. While both are Chinese Mahayana Buddhist temples, they have distinctive temple-level cultures: a strict culture in China and a permissive culture in the United States. Individual-level cultural frameworks also differ. In mainland China, the Buddhists learn their religion dutifully while their U.S. counterparts critically explore religion inside and outside their temples. Relying on …

The Indian Information Technology Sector: The New Caste Inequality Frontier, Marilyn Fernandez Jan 2018

The Indian Information Technology Sector: The New Caste Inequality Frontier, Marilyn Fernandez

Sociology

My conversations with IT professionals, and Indians I met in social settings, about the current state of 'caste' in India and in Indian IT sector often went like this:1 'Why are we talking about caste in this modern age? Aren't we perpetuating caste distinctions by continuing to talk about it? Isn't it time to get rid of reservations as IT has done? Look at the progress the IT sector has brought to the country! It is "merit, pure merit" that matters, and not caste or any other background'. Such were the assessments, often angry and even dismissive, of many …

Relative Roles Of Race Versus Socioeconomic Position In Studies Of Health Inequalities: A Matter Of Interpretation, Amani Nuru-Jeter, Elizabeth Michaels, Marilyn D. Thomas, Alexis Reeves, Roland Thorpe, Thomas A. Laveist Jan 2018

Relative Roles Of Race Versus Socioeconomic Position In Studies Of Health Inequalities: A Matter Of Interpretation, Amani Nuru-Jeter, Elizabeth Michaels, Marilyn D. Thomas, Alexis Reeves, Roland Thorpe, Thomas A. Laveist

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

An abundance of research has documented health inequalities by race and socioeconomic position (SEP) in the United States. However, conceptual and methodological challenges complicate the interpretation of study findings, thereby limiting progress in understanding health inequalities and in achieving health equity. Fundamental to these challenges is a lack of clarity about what race is and the implications of that ambiguity for scientific inquiry. Additionally, there is wide variability in how SEP is conceptualized and measured, resulting in a lack of comparability across studies and significant misclassification of risk. The objectives of this review are to synthesize the literature regarding common …

Lincoln And The Constitution: From The Civil War To The War On Terror, Mark E. Neely Jr. Jan 2018

Lincoln And The Constitution: From The Civil War To The War On Terror, Mark E. Neely Jr.

The Chautauqua Journal

On December 6, 2001, less than three months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Attorney General John Ashcroft, testifying before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, gave a warning: “To those who scare peace-loving people with phantoms of lost liberty, my message is this: Your tactics only aid terrorists—for they erode our national unity and diminish our resolve. They give ammunition to America’s enemies.” Such tough talk was not unprecedented in American history by any means. In fact, one can draw a straight line from President Abraham Lincoln to John Ashcroft on that score. Lincoln offered his sternest warning to the …

Reflections Of A White Southerner In The Freedom Struggle, Bob Zellner Jan 2018

Reflections Of A White Southerner In The Freedom Struggle, Bob Zellner

The Chautauqua Journal

Eastern Kentucky University's Chautauqua Lecture Series theme, “Living with Others: Challenges and Promises,” certainly resonates with my life, my experiences and my work for human rights. I have found that a proactive approach to living with others provides a strong antidote to close-mindedness, hate and violence. Living with others peacefully, harmoniously and joyfully broadens and liberates one’s life. This sharply contrasts with my Southern upbringing during the forties and fifties, when white supremacy and male chauvinism led many southerners to be narrow minded and reactionary. Juxtaposing challenge with promise, as the Chautauqua theme does, is also compatible with my philosophy …

Living With American Indians And American Indian History, John P. Bowes Jan 2018

Living With American Indians And American Indian History, John P. Bowes

The Chautauqua Journal

The following essay developed out of a lecture given on November 17, 2011 as part of the Chautauqua Lecture Series at Eastern Kentucky University. November 2011, like every November since 1994, was designated by proclamation as Native American Heritage Month. Working with the theme for the Chautauqua series, “Living with Others: Challenges and Promises,” the lecture focused on an idea relevant to the series and the month—the place of American Indians in the national historical narrative and its meaning for the place and perception of American Indian individuals and nations in the contemporary United States. This essay will build on …

Walking A Mile In Your Shoes, Matthew P. Winslow Jan 2018

Walking A Mile In Your Shoes, Matthew P. Winslow

The Chautauqua Journal

At first glance, Americans seem obsessed with other people. From magazines like People to television shows like Access Hollywood, we seem to have an insatiable appetite for the details of other people’s lives. Reality television differs from scripted television because it gives us the illusion that we are peering into the real life of other people. Much contemporary news coverage has a voyeuristic feel to it. We learn the details of the lives of people like Jerry Sandusky (child sexual abuser), Snookie (celebrity) and Whitney Houston (pop star) whether these details are relevant to an original story or not. …

Whither Education In Kentucky: The Challenges And Promises For The 21st Century, William E. Ellis Jan 2018

Whither Education In Kentucky: The Challenges And Promises For The 21st Century, William E. Ellis

The Chautauqua Journal

From its founding in 1792, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, compared with the states north of the Ohio River, followed a typically southern style of education. Before the Civil War a slave oligarchy controlled the political destiny of the state. After the Civil War, ironically because two-thirds of Kentuckians who fought in that war were on the Union side, the state became even more southern in many ways. Racism and segregation prevailed until the mid-1950s when the state began making rapid and successful strides to integrate its public and private schools. Equity and equality have always been stumbling blocks for education …

The Wolf And The Philosopher, Mark Rowlands Jan 2018

The Wolf And The Philosopher, Mark Rowlands

The Chautauqua Journal

Some years ago, I wrote a book called The Philosopher and the Wolf. It should really have been called The Wolf and the Philosopher. The wolf is the star, the philosopher an insignificant extra bumbling around in the background. The book is about many things, but fundamentally, I suppose, it is about growing up. I’ve recently finished a sequel of sorts. It’s called Running with the Pack and it’s a book about growing old. There is, I suspect, a natural trilogy to be written here, but I hope I don’t have to write the final part for some …

Is There A Gps For Lost In Translation?, Carole Garrison Jan 2018

Is There A Gps For Lost In Translation?, Carole Garrison

The Chautauqua Journal

Building human community is a greater task today as we reach a billion more people on our planet than just 12 years ago; then the earth was home to 6 billion people, according to the United Nations, and back in the 1960s, the earth’s population measured only half that number—3 billion. The concept, community, is over-broad and thus problematic. It covers both groups and individuals bound by similar and dissimilar interests. It can contain ideas across a broad array of cultural entities in life. A “Community” is a construct, an abstraction. Even as a member, we cannot see a whole …

Immigration And Domestic Violence Services: One Size Fits All?, Mary Kate Taggart

Master’s Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore how immigration-related factors affect provision of domestic violence services. These factors include the survivors’ integration into the American society and their English language proficiency. This thesis used secondary data from Multi-State Study of Meeting Domestic Violence Survivors' Needs Through Non-Residential Services and Supports. The data was analyzed using SPSS. After conducting Chi-square and OLS multiple regression statistical tests, some hypotheses were supported while others were not. Overall, this …

Fake Realities: Assassination And Race In Popular Culture, Kevin Marinella Jan 2018

Fake Realities: Assassination And Race In Popular Culture, Kevin Marinella

Master’s Theses and Projects

Since the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks the United States had been involved in conflicts across the globe. These conflict have given rise to the use of target killing, commonly known as assassination as a way to eliminate enemies of the United States. A majority of those killed are of Middle-Eastern descent and/or are followers of Islam. Elements of American popular culture since 9/11 have portrayed assassination, with the antagonists generally being of Middle-Eastern or Muslim descent while the protagonist being a white American or from a country allied with the United States who is involved in the conflict. By …

Military Sexual Assault: A Comparative Case Study Of Sexual Assault Policies In The United States, Israel, And Norway, Sarah Cummings Jan 2018

Military Sexual Assault: A Comparative Case Study Of Sexual Assault Policies In The United States, Israel, And Norway, Sarah Cummings

Master’s Theses and Projects

Military Sexual Trauma (MST), or the sexual assault or harassment of individuals serving in the military by others who are also serving, has recently been recognized as a significant problem in the United States, especially for women service members. Despite its recognized prevalence, current policies across military branches in the United States have not created transparent provisions for service members to receive preventative trainings and adequate sanctions for offenders. Also, reporting methods in the U.S. military are not at a level that is reflective of a transparent MSA policy. With the use of current Israeli and Norwegian military sexual assault …

Illegal Gambling And Its Operation Via The Darknet And Bitcoin: An Application Of Routine Activity Theory, Sinyong Choi Jan 2018

Illegal Gambling And Its Operation Via The Darknet And Bitcoin: An Application Of Routine Activity Theory, Sinyong Choi

Master’s Theses and Projects

For many years the Darknet and Bitcoins have been widely utilized by people who wish to anonymously perform illegal activities in cyberspace. Having already been restricted in many countries, the gambling websites utilizing Bitcoin payments and the Darknet allow online users to freely engage in illegal gambling activities with the absence of a formal capable guardian. Although it is an urgent priority that law enforcement find a solution to the pressing issue, there are a few empirical studies focusing on such illegal gambling website. Due to the scarcity of studies in this area, the current study attempts to examine the …

Tv Policy Dynamics: Examining Effects Of Advertising On Arrests In Cities, Johnathan B. Norton Jan 2018

Tv Policy Dynamics: Examining Effects Of Advertising On Arrests In Cities, Johnathan B. Norton

Master’s Theses and Projects

Through the work done by Shaw & McKay (1942), Bursik (1989), Messner & Sampson (1991), and Sampson & Wilson (1995), social disorganization and focus on inner-city crime became a major point of interest for researchers. The idea of social disorganization looks at the weakening of social institutions, both formal and informal, that eventually lead to crime and the study of crime patterns in urban areas. This framework has been used to study crime and pinpoint areas where decisions from governmental officials and local communities have eroded the collective efficacy of neighborhoods, leading to crime. In 2003, the FCC made changes …

The Oppressive Nexus Of Socioeconomic Status And Gender In Egyptian Society: A Marxist Exposition, Stephanie Attar Jan 2018

The Oppressive Nexus Of Socioeconomic Status And Gender In Egyptian Society: A Marxist Exposition, Stephanie Attar

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy

The main purpose of this paper is to argue that women from lower socioeconomic status (SES) position are, on the whole, subjected to higher rates of exploitation within the household. This is done by exploring the implications and flaws within traditional neoclassical economic models of the household, and offering a Marxian model of domestic production as an alternative. I argue that incidence of lower SES exacerbates the rate of exploitation by lowering women’s bargaining power within the household. Two forms of bargaining power are posited to be particularly important: (1) the bargaining process over the distribution of resources within the …

Usa: Afghanistan Exit Options, Lishan Desta Jan 2018

Usa: Afghanistan Exit Options, Lishan Desta

Faculty Publications and Presentations

After sixteen years of military and political engagement in Afghanistan, the U.S. is not any closer to its goal of achieving a stable democratic Afghanistan. Efforts to stabilize Afghanistan have been thwarted by the insurgency led by the Taliban, the group the U.S. has toppled sixteen years ago. Today, even U.S. senior generals do not see victory in Afghanistan, but a stalemate.

This paper maintains that what the U.S. basically has in Afghanistan is not a Taliban or a Pakistan problem, but a conceptual error problem. Because of this error, the U.S. is in a vicious cycle that keeps conflating …
