Beaver Lake Projectile Point, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

CRHR: Archaeology

This is a Paleoindian Period Beaver Lake projectile point (approx. 10,500-9,500 B.P.) of Ft. Payne chert discovered in Perry County, Tennessee. It is associated with state site number 40PY312 and context of find is a shoreline bank on the Tennessee River near Linden, Tennessee. Site 40PY312 is also associated with hundreds of early stage reduction flakes of Ft. Payne chert. The point is important because of its Paleoindian cultural affiliation of which very little is known, and also by the fact it has been re-purposed from a projectile point to an end-scraper. Datives, Data And Dialect Syntax In American English, Jim Wood, Raffaella Zanuttini Jan 2018

Datives, Data And Dialect Syntax In American English, Jim Wood, Raffaella Zanuttini

Linguistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a detailed case study of a number of dative constructions that vary across speakers of American English. We show how geographical maps of acceptability judgments can be used to shed light on the syntactic structures underlying those judgments. Those structures can then be used to refine our understanding of syntax more generally, in this case relating to the features of argument-introducing heads. We provide novel support for the low applicative analysis of the Personal Dative construction, on the grounds that this analysis falls in line with a general, somewhat surprising conclusion about Southern American English: …

Y’En A Marre! Hip-Hop Culture And Social Mobilization In Post Colonial Senegal, Lucie Latuner

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

After over fifty years since decolonization, Senegal is seen as a success story in establishing democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. However, due to neocolonialism, Senegal is still far from independent, and its leaders are still working against the interests of their people. Emerging out of a history of anti-imperialist mobilization, young rappers continue a transnational struggle against imperialism in reference to the ideology of revolutionaries before them. These rappers and journalists, drawing on a sense of responsibility to a historical, multigenerational fight, unite to create the movement Y’en a Marre—a movement of civic mobilization to oppose their authoritarian government and fight …

Media Misrepresentation Of Academic Literature And Barriers To Verify Sources For Those Outside Of Higher Education: An Example From Last Week Tonight With John Oliver , Memo Cordova, Amber Sherman

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Academic librarians teach students to research using academic databases and peer-reviewed articles. Information literacy skills combat misinformation in a student’s academic career and beyond the classroom. However, once students leave campus and cross the border from student life to working life, they may not have access to peer-reviewed literature. Using a popular segment of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver about scientific studies, this article presents the importance of, and barriers to, students’ continued access to peer-reviewed research. How librarians might mitigate these obstacles are discussed.

Generational Differences In The Workplace: The Influence Of Debt On Work Values And Job Satisfaction, Anna Skrybka

ETD Archive

Organizations are consistently, and increasingly, dealing with the changing of generations in the workplace with the introduction of Generation Y, the upcoming decline of Generation X, and the retirement of Baby Boomers. Due to the changing workforce, the purpose of this current research was to observe how debt, work values, specifically intrinsic (helping others, being able to be creative) versus extrinsic (money, status), and job satisfaction are changing among the employees as well. However, there are few to no studies that have looked at how the inclusion of debt (mortgage loans, car loans, credit card debt, school loans) is influencing …

Dimensions Of Online/Offline Social Communication: An Extension Of The Hyperpersonal Model, Devin Joseph Kelly Jan 2018

Dimensions Of Online/Offline Social Communication: An Extension Of The Hyperpersonal Model, Devin Joseph Kelly

ETD Archive

With the rise of technology it becomes important to measure and analyze the communication patterns that are emerging from these changes. Technologies open up different communication patterns for individuals to use (Tomas & Carlson 2015; Walther, 1996; Wei & Leung, 1999). Thus, this study develops the “ASOHIO” perspective, which incorporates a range of new and old communication patterns, online communication, offline communication, synchronous communication, asynchronous communication, interpersonal communication, and hyperpersonal communication. This work also looks to extend the hyperpersonal model greatly by developing an actual multi-item scale to measure the construct at the individual level. Walther’s (1996) basic description of …

Recognition Memory Revisited: An Aging And Electrophysiological Investigation, Elliott C. Jardin

ETD Archive

This study provides a better understanding of contributing factors to age differences in human episodic memory. A recurrent finding in recognition memory is that older adults tend to have lower overall accuracy and tend to make fewer false-alarm errors in judging new items, relative miss errors (Coyne, Allen & Wickens, 1986; Danziger, 1980; Poon and Fozard 1980). Two possible causes for decline in these abilities include an age-related decrement in speed of processing (Salthouse 1991) and changes in information processing ability due to entropy (Allen, Kaufman, Smitch, & Propper 1998a; Mallik et al., in preparation). Additionally, age differences may be …

Undergraduate Research Posters 2018

Against all odds, Donald J. Trump shocked the world when he won the 2016 presidential election and became the 45th President of the United States. Few foresaw such a victory for the Republicans; it was widely believed among political scientists, election analysts, media pundits, and reportedly even Trump himself that victory would ultimately go to the Democratic party. So how and why did he win? We examine the multitude of factors that contributed to his electoral victory, including his iconic “Make America Great Again” campaign, how his policies resonated with voters (as well as his primary opponent’s policies), and shifts …

Social Care Students’ Learning In The Practice Placement In Ireland, Fiona Mcsweeney, David Williams

Articles

The practice placement is a central component of social care education, being seen as where students develop their practice skills, self-awareness and apply theoretical knowledge. This research reports on social care students’ experiences of their practice placements, in particular how learning was achieved and what helped learning. An interpretivist approach was used in line with the acceptance of the individuality of students’ experiences. A volunteer sample of seventeen students were interviewed individually at the end of their final year in college. The interview transcripts were thematically analysed. Four themes were identified: the need for a balance between autonomy and doing …

First Line Of Defense: Protecting Youth On Campus, Tina C. Carter, Alyssa King

Division of Community Engagement Resources

Many institutions recognize the need for a centralized process to address the safety of youth on campus. Legislation, publicized incidents, state and national laws, and research have pushed this topic to the forefront. In an effort to educate, mitigate risk, and create consistency, the implementation of university-wide youth protection policies has become a common practice. While each campus is different, foundational components to these policies can create a cultural shift and educate individuals on their role in reporting abuse and neglect. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) launched its youth protection policy, Safety and Protection of Minors, in July 2016. The …

Is Counseling Integral To Buprenorphine-Assisted Opioid Addiction Treatment? Examining Counseling Participation And Treatment Retention At A Richmond, Virginia Clinic, John R. Gyourko, Hilary Colin King

Social Work Student Works

Treatment providers in Virginia are required by law to offer counseling or referrals to all clients receiving medication-assisted opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2016; Medical Society of Virginia, 2018). Prescribing physicians widely regard counseling as a critical component of medication-assisted OUD treatment (Lin, Lofwall, Walsh, & Knudsen, 2019), and clients perceive counseling to be among the most important factors promoting recovery from opioid dependence (Hay, Huhn, Tompkins, & Dunn, 2019). Research investigating the efficacy of counseling as an OUD treatment component, however, has been equivocal to date (Brown, 2018; Dugosh et al., 2016). The current …

Teaching Service-Learners To Be Designers Of Social Change, Matthew James Vechinski

Focused Inquiry Publications

This presentation focuses on teaching undergraduates to regard themselves as designers in the context of interdisciplinary project-based learning. Central to design thinking is storytelling, using narrative to reflect on scenarios and to build empathy with stakeholders. It also involves recognizing community partners as collaborators, not just as passive recipients of benefits, in order to produce truly innovative, sustainable projects that fulfill real needs and bring about change.
