The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has become the subject of an increasing number of conferences, op-ed pieces, and articles. The debate emanates from two strands: at the geopolitical level, OBOR is seen as a manifestation of China's ambitions to become a global power threatening the existing power structure; at the geo-economic level, CPEC presents both opportunities and risks for Pakistan. This article examines the significant benefits of CPEC—including addition of 10,000MW to Pakistan's energy generation capacity, highway construction linking Gwadar with Kashgar, and regional economic integration—while addressing common apprehensions about debt burden and Chinese economic domination, arguing that such concerns …

Sufficient blood concentrations of folate and the products from its metabolism arenecessary for several cellular functions. The C677T MTHFR polymorphism, present in over halfof the U.S. population, reduces the efficiency of folate metabolism and has been linked to theonset of multiple psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. The intracellular parasiteToxoplasma gondii can infect the human brain and is associated with increased prevalence ofpsychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. In vitro studies have found that Toxoplasma gondiimay salvage unmetabolized folate from host cells. Since the C677T MTHFR polymorphism andinfection by Toxoplasma gondii both affect folate metabolism or availability, I used data fromthe third …

A loss of memory of past environmental degradation has resulted in shifted baselines, which may result in conservation and restoration goals that are less ambitious than if stakeholders had a full knowledge of ecosystem potential. However, the link between perception of baseline states and support for conservation planning has not been tested empirically. Here, we investigate how perceptions of change in coral reef ecosystems affect stakeholders' willingness to pay (WTP) for the establishment of protected areas. Coral reefs are experiencing rapid, global change that is observable by the public, and therefore provide an ideal ecosystem to test links between beliefs …
