No. 14: The Impact Of Proximity To Wet Markets And Supermarkets On Household Dietary Diversity In Nanjing City, China, Taiyang Zhong, Zhenzhong Si, Jonathan Crush, Zhiying Zu, Xianjin Huang, Steffanie Scott, Shuangshuang Tang, Xiang Zhang

Hungry Cities Partnership

Existing studies suggest that despite the proliferation of supermarkets, traditional wet markets have persisted in many countries and have been playing an important role in people’s daily food access. Yet, studies investigating the issue of food access and its influences on food security have mainly focused on food deserts and the proximity to supermarkets, with limited focus on wet markets and other food outlets. This study investigates the influence of the proximity to wet markets and supermarkets on urban household dietary diversity in Nanjing. Based on the data collected through a citywide survey in 2015 and the map data of …

Disability At Work: Libraries, Built To Exclude, Jessica Schomberg Feb 2018

Disability At Work: Libraries, Built To Exclude, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

My goal in writing this chapter is to use critical disability theory grounded in my lived experience to offer some possibilities for improving the working conditions of library employees with disabilities. I begin by providing an overview of some mainstream and critical perspectives on disability. Next, I offer my own insights into being a disabled librarian by taking an intersectional approach to the construction of power. I conclude the chapter by suggesting some ways to bring theory and practice together to make the workplace more inclusive of people. Throughout the chapter, I share some of my experiences as a person …

Information Literacy For Music Graduate Students: A Framework Application, Michael J. Duffy Iv

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

The syllabus for a graduate-level bibliographic research course in music at Western Michigan University (WMU) provides an opportunity to link Frames of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, as reflected in the WMU Libraries’ recently developed Information Literacy Core Competencies (ILCCs), to graduate instruction in music. I have had multiple opportunities to teach this graduate-level bibliographic research course, Introduction to Research in Music. Microfinance And The Decision To Invest In Children’S Education, P.V. Viswanath Feb 2018

Microfinance And The Decision To Invest In Children’S Education, P.V. Viswanath

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

Although one of the primary objectives of microfinance has been the reduction of poverty through the provision of credit for income-generating purposes, evidence of its impact on poverty has been mixed. Even if there is no direct impact of microfinance, there may be an indirect positive impact through the effect of microcredit availability on families’ decisions to invest in their children’s education. In this paper, I describe a study undertaken to gauge the impact of microcredit availability on education expenditures for children of clients of a South Indian microfinance institution. I first look at some determinants of the demand for …

Development Of Body Emotion Perception In Infancy_ From Discrimination To Recognition.Pdf, Alison Heck, Alyson Chroust, Hannah White, Rachel Jubran, Ramesh Bhatt Feb 2018

Development Of Body Emotion Perception In Infancy_ From Discrimination To Recognition.Pdf, Alison Heck, Alyson Chroust, Hannah White, Rachel Jubran, Ramesh Bhatt

Psychology Faculty Works

Research suggests that infants progress from discrimination to recognition of emotions in faces during the first half year of life. It is whether the perception of emotions from bodies develops in a similar manner. In the current study, when presented with happy and angry body videos and voices, 5-month-olds looked longer at the matching video when they were presented upright but not when they were inverted. In contrast, 3.5-month-olds failed to match even with upright videos. Thus, 5-month-olds but not 3.5-month-olds exhibited evidence of recognition of emotions from bodies by demonstrating intermodal matching. In a subsequent experiment, younger infants did …

Women Agricultural Landowners—Past Time To Put Them “On The Radar”, Peggy Petrzelka, Ann Sorensen, Jennifer Filipiak Feb 2018

Women Agricultural Landowners—Past Time To Put Them “On The Radar”, Peggy Petrzelka, Ann Sorensen, Jennifer Filipiak

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

While women own 25% of the acres rented out for farming, little has been done in terms of federal policy that focuses on these women. In this policy analysis, we detail how (1) lack of data on these women landowners and (2) the invisibility of these women to federal natural resource and agricultural agency staff contribute to women nonoperating landowners (WNOLs) not being on the federal policy radar. We discuss how the persistence of these factors continues to marginalize WNOLs in federal agricultural policy, despite the mandate of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies to be serving underserved populations such …

Open By Default? Concept-Mapping Our Way To Open Access Consensus, Emily Carlisle, Lillian S. Rigling, Joanne Paterson, Courtney L. Waugh Feb 2018

Open By Default? Concept-Mapping Our Way To Open Access Consensus, Emily Carlisle, Lillian S. Rigling, Joanne Paterson, Courtney L. Waugh

Western Libraries Presentations

By its nature design thinking combines creative and critical thinking that is imperative to organizing ideas and improving situations. Design thinking allows libraries to take an iterative approach to exploring a complex problem-space, and generate consensus around a potential solution, all while providing artifacts and documentation of the process. In libraries, design thinking is most commonly employed in the design of spaces or services. However, inspired by Open Access Week, we engaged these strategies to collaboratively deconstruct Western Libraries’ current policies related to open access.

We invited staff and librarians from Western Libraries and our affiliates to explore how we …

Alliances For 2018 Colombia’S Presidential Elections Can You Trust The Candidates?, Juan Luis Suárez, Yadira Lizama Mué Feb 2018

Alliances For 2018 Colombia’S Presidential Elections Can You Trust The Candidates?, Juan Luis Suárez, Yadira Lizama Mué

CulturePlex Lab DataPoints

Semana’s most recent poll puts Gustavo Petro clearly in the lead for voting intentions (23.4%), followed closely by Fajardo (21.6%) and with Vargas Lleras (14.8%) a distant third. De la Calle (10.6%) is fourth, and Marta Lucía Ramírez (7.8%), fifth. Many commentators try to figure out how these results will facilitate alliances after the March vote to Congress, and in the second round of the Presidential election. To test possible scenarios, we have analyzed Twitter conversations from January through the lens of relationships between candidates. That is, we are interested in who talks to whom, not only because elections are …
