Poultry Farmers’ Information Needs And Extension Advices In Kilosa, Tanzania: Evidence From Mobile-Based Extension, Advisory And Learning System (Meals), Camilius Sanga
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Background: Poultry farmers need different information in order to improve their farming and contribute to the national economy. Information on poultry management is usually obtained from family members, friends, and neighbors with previous experience, extension officers, researchers, Television, radio, web and mobile based agriculture information systems. Promoting utilisation of vetted sources of information is envisaged to support poultry farmers in making informed decisions about management practices. This in turn will result into increased poultry productivity.
Objective: Many researches have been done to evaluate various information sources but few have been done to evaluate the mobile based extension, advisory …
Mission Critical? The Presence Of Information Literacy In Academic Library Mission Statements, Robert Perret
Mission Critical? The Presence Of Information Literacy In Academic Library Mission Statements, Robert Perret
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examines the mission and vision statements of the largest academic library in each of the United States to determine whether information literacy is included in these top-level guiding documents. It is found that only a quarter of these institutions include information literacy in these statements, which suggests this vital aspect of librarianship may be undervalued at an organizational level.

Introducing The Police Crime Database, Philip M. Stinson, Kathleen Y. Murray
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
There are no official statistics on crime committed by sworn law enforcement officers, and the public is generally without the ability to research the incidence and prevalence of police crime in their own communities. The Police Crime database is designed to fill that gap, and provides internet-based public access to summary information on 8,006 criminal arrest cases during years 2005-2012 involving 6,596 sworn officers who were charged with one or more crimes. The arrested officers were employed by 2,830 nonfederal law enforcement agencies located in 1,302 counties and independent cities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This …

Expanding The "Active Layer", Peter Ashmore, Sarah Peirce, Pauline Leduc
Expanding The "Active Layer", Peter Ashmore, Sarah Peirce, Pauline Leduc
Geography & Environment Publications
Church and Haschenburger (2017) make helpful distinctions around the issue of defining the active layer, with which we agree. We propose expanding discussion and definition of the ”active layer” in fluvial bedload transport to include the concept of the “morphological active layer”. This is particularly applicable to laterally unstable rivers (such as braided rivers) in which progressive morphological change over short time periods is the process by which much of the bedload transport occurs. The morphological active layer is also distinguished by variable lateral and longitudinal extent continuity over a range of flows and transport intensity. We suggest that the …

Road Diet V2.0 - Road Diet With Roundabouts, Michael Williams
Road Diet V2.0 - Road Diet With Roundabouts, Michael Williams
PSU Transportation Seminars
How can we go one step, or one lane, further than the standard road diet? Roundabouts allow a road diet to reduce the final number of lanes from three to two.
Questions arise when roundabouts are used with a road diet. What traffic volumes are supportable? Will the roundabouts fit within existing intersections? What does current guidance tell us about this approach?
Michael Williams will present his work on creating a sequel to FHWA’s Road Diet Informational Guide. This work is intended to provide a feasibility determination tool for the application of this approach to existing corridors. Data from Bird …

Studying Online Deviant Groups (Odgs): A Socio-Technical Approach Leveraging Social Network Analysis (Sna) & Social Cyber Forensics (Scf) Techniques, Samer Al-Khateeb
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s information technology age our thinking and behaviors are highly influenced by what we see on the Internet and our smartphones screens, e.g., watching a fake or photo-shopped image of a well-known individual makes some of us think it is true. But in many cases, it is not. The initial use of social media for benign purposes, e.g., to socialize with friends or browse pictures has increasingly transitioned to include malicious activities, e.g., cyber-terrorism and cyber-warfare. These nefarious uses of Online Social Networks (OSNs) pose a significant threat to society and are under-studied, thus requires research attention. Online Deviant …

Pursuing A Dream: The Lived Experiences Of Early Leavers And Their Return To Alternative High School, Patrick Morrissette
Pursuing A Dream: The Lived Experiences Of Early Leavers And Their Return To Alternative High School, Patrick Morrissette
The Qualitative Report
This article describes a phenomenological study that explored the experiences of early leavers who chose to return to high school in order to pursue their diploma. Eighteen students, including males and females, participated in individual tape recorded interviews, during which they described their experiences, yielding written protocols that were thematically analyzed. Results from this study revealed seven prominent themes that included the following (a) facing reality, (b) launching process, (c) determination, (d) overcoming barriers, (e) supportive influences, (f) proving self, and (g) learning context. Findings and implications for educators and future research are included.

The Qualitative Report
In this book review of Research for Designers: A Guide to Methods and Practice, I provide a summary of the book’s content and a brief description of each chapter. I also discuss the book’s structure, organization, strengths, and weaknesses. “I Am Just Like Everyone Else, Except For A Nine-Digit Number”: A Thematic Analysis Of The Experiences Of Dreamers, Joanna Méndez-Pounds Ph.D., Denise A. Nicholas, Natali Gonzalez, Jason B. Whiting
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative thematic analysis study explored the experiences of DREAMers, undocumented students raised in the US awaiting the passage of the DREAM Act. We used a phenomenologically-informed textual analysis which resulted in a summary essence of the experience of DREAMers, describing how even though DREAMers are like other contributing members of society “except for a nine-digit number,” certain characteristics make their experience unique. Two websites containing experiences of individuals identifying as DREAMers as they wait for the passage of the DREAM Act, were analyzed to draw out specific themes that represented DREAMers’ experiences. Results revealed the following themes, Uncertainty about …
Dissociative Identity Disorder: An In-Depth Look, Brittany Horchner
Dissociative Identity Disorder: An In-Depth Look, Brittany Horchner
The Kabod
Dissociative Identity Disorder is a mental health disorder where there are two or more distinct people within one individual. These distinct people or personalities are also called alters. An alter is a fully distinct person, that carries on a whole different personality than the original person. That means that if a person has two distinct people within them one could be very smart and introverted, but the other one may not have as high of IQ and might be extraverted. The personalities of each alter are different and very distinct from one another. The alternative personality or personalities would also …

Theoretical Implementation Of A Police Officer Suicide Prevention Program, Abby Lokkesmoe
The Kabod
Since 1990, the Los Angeles Police Department has lost 52 of its valuable officers: 30 of these were killed in the line of duty, and a stunning 22 (42.31%) took their own lives. While the reasons why these officers ended their lives prematurely vary, the implications of their deaths remain the same; it is of paramount importance to take action to address this problem. This department has made efforts in recent years to decrease the number of police officer suicides, but the officers who have taken their own lives since then are a testament to the failure of those efforts. …

Elliptic Curves, Samuel Estep
The Kabod
Elliptic curves have found widespread use in number theory and applications thereof, such as cryptography. In this paper we will first examine the basic theory of elliptic curves and then look specifically at how they can be used to construct cryptographic systems more efficient than their counterparts, and how they can be used to generate proofs for or against primality.

Interspecies Political Agency In The Total Liberation Movement, Michael P. Allen, Erica Von Essen
Interspecies Political Agency In The Total Liberation Movement, Michael P. Allen, Erica Von Essen
Between the Species
In this paper, we examine the possibility of interspecies political agency at the level of social movements. We ask to what extent animals and humans can be co-participants in one another’s liberation from oppression. To do so, we assess arguments for and against including animals in the ‘total liberation package’, taken as the liberation from oppressive societal structures. These are not pragmatic-political arguments, but conceptual-philosophical arguments that have been put before animal liberationists attempting to ‘piggy-back’ on human liberation movements. In discrediting these philosophical arguments, we argue that animals have capacities for self-liberation that humans can facilitate and that animals, …

Natural history. Teaching. Writing. All have form, all have function. But just as no architecture is risk-free, no architecture is neutral. In this personal essay, I explore the surprising connections that develop when university students engage with natural history as way of knowing the ground underfoot.
