Barriers To Addressing Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (Hand): Community-Based Service Provider Perspectives, Renato M. Liboro, Francisco Ibanez-Carrasco, Sean B. Rourke, Andrew Easton, Claudia Medina, Daniel Pugh, Allan Rae, Lori E. Ross, Paul A. Shuper

Psychology Faculty Research

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) is an emergent public health issue in developed countries. Consequently, people living with HIV who experience HAND will increasingly require support from community-based HIV service providers. The objective of our qualitative study was to identify barriers service providers face in addressing HAND among people living with HIV. Thirty-three providers from 22 AIDS service organizations across Ontario, Canada, were interviewed. Using thematic analysis, three types of barriers were identified: (a) personal/professional, (b) service access, and (c) systemic. This paper draws attention to HAND-related obstacles that service providers encounter in their work and presents options to overcome them.

Recent Advances In Activity-Based Travel Demand Models For Greater Flexibility, Kihong Kim Feb 2018

Recent Advances In Activity-Based Travel Demand Models For Greater Flexibility, Kihong Kim

Dissertations and Theses

Most existing activity-based travel demand models are implemented in a tour-based microsimulation framework. Due to the significant computational and data storage benefits, the demand microsimulation allows a greater amount of flexibility in terms of demographic market segmentation, temporal scale, and spatial resolution, and thus the models can represent a wider range of travel behavior aspects associated with various policies and scenarios. This dissertation proposes three innovative methodologies, one for each of the three key dimensions, to fulfill the greater level of details toward a more mature state of activity-based travel demand models.

Results From A Multi-Site Survey Of Course-Embedded/Peer-To-Peer Writing Support Programs, Scott Whiddon, Julia Bleakney, Russell Carpenter, Kevin Dvorak, Paula Rosinski

CAHSS Faculty Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

Although course-embedded programs (such as writing fellows, writing center fellows, or writing associates) have been examined at single institutions in terms of training, faculty support, and assessment, writing center researchers have rarely studied these programs across multiple sites. Our panel provides results from a large-scale multi-institution survey of students, faculty, and staffers in classes with course-embedded writing support programs, at four SWCA institutions that differ in terms of size and mission. This project and research results showcase the perceived value and impact of course-embedded, peer-to-peer writing support.

Jews: The Makers Of Early Modern Berlin, Conlan Vance

2018 Symposium

From Frederick William’s decree in 1671 to allow fifty Jewish families to settle in Brandenburg-Prussia to these families and their descendants becoming immersed in the economy of Berlin through their use in courts but more so through their trading, specifically, the ways in which they traded and how they used these to free themselves from some of the constraints of German Christian society. Thusly, this will be shown by looking at Jews in Brandenburg-Prussia in the later 17th century, Jews in …

An Old Tool With Enduring Value: Using Excel To Prepare Data For Analysis, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Microsoft Excel was first released on the Windows platform 30 years ago and has since become widely used. Although new tools for manipulating, analyzing, and visualizing data are constantly emerging, Excel remains a potent tool—and not just because of newer features. Simple functions such as TRIM, MID, SUBSTITUTE, FIND, ROUNDDOWN, and VLOOKUP can be used to manipulate data sets in powerful ways.

This workshop applies selected functions to realistic library data sets. Demonstrations include:

  • deriving time-series categories from date and time stamps
  • pre-coding survey comments based on keywords
  • dealing with messy data points such as …

Public Awareness Of Scientific Consensus On Climate Change Is Rising, Lawrence C. Hamilton Feb 2018

Public Awareness Of Scientific Consensus On Climate Change Is Rising, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Carsey Publications

In this fact sheet, author Lawrence Hamilton discusses public awareness of scientific consensus on climate change, drawing on 16 nationwide or single-state surveys. An overwhelming majority of scientists who study the Earth’s climate agree that human activities are causing rapid change; Hamilton finds the U.S. public becoming more aware of this consensus. About 2/3 of respondents in recent polls (up from half in 2010) recognize that most scientists agree that human activities are causing climate change.

A Modified Balcik Last Mile Distribution Model For Relief Operations Using Open Road Networks, Lance L. Putong, Marlene M. De Leon Feb 2018

A Modified Balcik Last Mile Distribution Model For Relief Operations Using Open Road Networks, Lance L. Putong, Marlene M. De Leon

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

The last mile in disaster relief distribution chain is the delivery of goods from a central warehouse to the evacuation centers assigned for a given area. Its effectiveness relies on the proper allocation of each kind of relief good amongst the demand areas on a given frequency. Because these operations involve a limited supply of relief goods, vehicles, and time, it is important to optimize these operations to satisfy as much demand as possible. The study aims to create a linear programming model which provides a set of recommendations on how the current disaster relief supply chain may be carried …

The Practical Utility And Suitability Of Email Interviews In Qualitative Research, Janice E. Hawkins

The Qualitative Report

Interviews with key informants are the most common means of data collection in qualitative descriptive research. Researchers have historically preferred face-to-face interviews but advances in technology have resulted in more options, including email exchanges, to conduct interviews. This article examines the practical utility and suitability of the email interview in qualitative research. The author will share personal experiences from a recent qualitative study involving email interviews of nurse educators. The purpose of the study was to describe the experiences of nurse educators in developing and implementing concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs. Interviews of nurse educators describing their experiences of developing and …

Temporary Places : The Balkan Refugee Route, Eric Martin

Sponsored Events -- List

Disasters, terrorist activities, wars, and other factors trigger large streams of people fleeing crisis and seeking refuge. These flows reached record levels in Europe from 2015 to 2017, when many refugees took "the Balkan route," through Greece, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia, to reach north-western Europe. A massive response, one of the largest humanitarian actions in Europe since the Balkan Wars in the 1990s, included volunteers and organizations from the public and nonprofit-sector. Due to complexities and national variations in policy making, this crisis response consisted of five different, though somewhat overlapping phases, in which the "place" …
