Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

During the last 17 years, since the adoption of the Palermo Protocol, authorities at international and national levels have investigated and prosecuted trafficking cases, and aided victims. Nevertheless, every day thousands of people around the world are sold, lured with false promises and exploited. In Mexico, 10,000 young girls and women are said to be trafficked into cities for sexual exploitation every year. Trafficked victims suffer a wide range of sexual exploitation, physical and psychological violence, human rights violations including their right to dignity, and cruel and inhumane treatment, creating vulnerability and isolation. Towards Practical Privacy-Preserving Analytics For Iot And Cloud Based Healthcare Systems, Sagar Sharma, Keke Chen, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Modern healthcare systems now rely on advanced computing methods and technologies, such as IoT devices and clouds, to collect and analyze personal health data at unprecedented scale and depth. Patients, doctors, healthcare providers, and researchers depend on analytical models derived from such data sources to remotely monitor patients, early-diagnose diseases, and find personalized treatments and medications. However, without appropriate privacy protection, conducting data analytics becomes a source of privacy nightmare. In this paper, we present the research challenges in developing practical privacy-preserving analytics in healthcare information systems. The "Double Standard" Of Nonproliferation: Regime Type And The U.S. Response To Nuclear Weapons Program, Alina Shymanska Mar 2018

The "Double Standard" Of Nonproliferation: Regime Type And The U.S. Response To Nuclear Weapons Program, Alina Shymanska

International Journal of Nuclear Security

There is no doubt that the NPT regime is far from being equal for all states involved. As the predominant hegemonic power since WWII, the United States plays a major role in deciding the fates of non-great power proliferators. This article tries to find the logical explanation of the phenomenon whereby some nuclear proliferators are absolved regardless of their active accumulation of nuclear arsenals while others are labeled as “rogue states” and ordered to disarm. The article suggests that a particular proliferator’s political regime could affect the way in which its state is approached by the U.S., known for its …

Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan Mar 2018

Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis examines the dynamics of cultural and social assimilation through the experiences of Czech immigrants into Nebraska. The Czechs' long struggle to maintain their ethnic identity has shaped their experiences with assimilation. After a review of assimilation theory, I conclude that the Czech experience with assimilation follows a “straight-line” assimilation model, a progression of assimilation that is complete by the third generation. Their relatively small size, settlement in rural areas, and a strong desire to maintain ethnic identity, as reflected in the formation of Czech language benevolent associations, gymnastic societies, and Czech language newspapers, led to “social” and “structural” …

Naturally Occurring Mentorship In A National Sample Of First-Generation College Goers: A Promising Portal For Academic And Developmental Success., Veronica Fruiht, Thomas Chan

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Attending college is increasingly important to compete in this global world; however, young people whose parents did not attend college are significantly less likely to enroll in and finish college. Formal programs to support first-generation college goers are common, but not scalable to provide support to all young people who need it. Instead, mentoring that naturally occurs on these students' journeys into and out of college may be a more practical avenue for supporting their success. This study investigated the role community members, relatives, and educators play in first-generation college goers' educational outcomes. Data from 4,181 participants of the National …

The Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR) was initiated in 2010 to chart the next phase of cultural development in Singapore. The final report, which was released in 2012, appears to propose a paradigm shift in focus for arts and cultural policy making in Singapore: from the desire to manage the arts and cultural sectors into profitable creative industries to the utilisation of the arts and culture as expedient tools for social cohesion and community building in Singapore. This shift has resulted in government programmes placing (renewed) importance and emphasis on “community arts” as a cultural activity. This chapter critically …

Organization Of Materials And Accessing The Library In Blackboard: A Learner-Centered Usability Study, Michelle Gibeault

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

If we put the students in charge, how would they organize their course materials? What would their preferences reflect about approaches to organization? In order to engage with these research questions, a usability study aligned with social constructivist pedagogy and participatory design is described and evaluated as an avenue for investigation. The study entailed a classroom activity in which an adapted card-sort (using Legos) challenged students to organize their course materials, including librarian-created research materials, for their Composition II course's Blackboard site.
