Living In A Gender-Binary World: Implications For A Revised Model Of Consumer Vulnerability, Kim Mckeage, Elizabeth Crosby, Terri Rittenburg Mar 2018

Living In A Gender-Binary World: Implications For A Revised Model Of Consumer Vulnerability, Kim Mckeage, Elizabeth Crosby, Terri Rittenburg

School of Business All Faculty Scholarship

Baker, Gentry, and Rittenburg’s (2005) model of consumer vulnerability outlines the personal, social, and structural characteristics that frame consumers’ experiences of vulnerability in the marketplace. Later applications and enhancements have expanded consumer vulnerability theory. While the theory has been applied in numerous settings, to date it has not been used to examine the ways that gender identity may intersect with market factors to produce vulnerability. Application in this setting also allows for the integration of various model enhancements, and the examination of vulnerability using a more complete formulation of the theory. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews and collages, along with …

The Walk-In Counselling Model Of Service Delivery: Who Benefits Most?, Manuel Riemer, Carol A. Stalker, Livia D. Dittmer, Cheryl-Anne Cait, Susan Horton, Narges Kermany, Jocelyn Booton

Psychology Faculty Publications

The walk-in counselling (WIC) model of service delivery has been found to reduce psychological distress more quickly than a traditional model of service delivery involving a wait list. A question remains, however, as to the relative benefit of the WIC model for different client groups. The present study uses graphical inspection and multilevel modeling to conduct moderator analyses comparing two agencies, one with a WIC clinic and the other with a traditional wait list approach, and their relative impact on psychological distress. Key findings regarding the differential benefits for different types of presenting problems as well as clients at different …

Residential Settings And Healthcare Use Of The Rural "Oldest-Old" Medicare Population, Nathan Paluso Mph, Zachariah T. Croll Mph, Deborah Thayer Mba, Jean A. Talbot Phd, Mph, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Long Term Services and Supports

The aging of the baby boom generation is projected to dramatically increase the population aged 65 and older in the coming decades. In particular, those aged 85 and older (the ‘oldest old’) are expanding at a faster rate than any other age group and by 2050 are expected to make up 4.5 percent of the population, compared to 1.9 percent in 2012. Faster growth in the percentage of older people (65+) in rural than in urban areas is likely to challenge the healthcare and long term services and supports (LTSS) capacity in many rural communities.

This study used Medicare Current …

Everyone Is Responsible For A Culture Of Safety, Linda Paradiso

Publications and Research

Whether you’re a direct-care nurse or a leader, you’re responsible for speaking up and taking action to keep patients safe. As front line workers, direct care nurses are error identifiers. The organizations where they work are responsible to create systems that are safe. Nurse leaders are responsible to develop environments that encourage speaking up and are free of punitive response. In a perfect world, discipline is based on the behavioral choice a person makes not the injury to the patient.

Tools And Principles For Effective Online Library Instruction: Andragogy And Undergraduates, Kathy Watts Mar 2018

Tools And Principles For Effective Online Library Instruction: Andragogy And Undergraduates, Kathy Watts

Library Faculty Scholarship

The library literature evaluating the efficacy of online tutorial methods and delivery tools is a valuable resource for librarians looking for information to inform their choices for developing asynchronous online instruction. This literature, however, examines a wide variety of delivery tools, methods, and student populations. As a result, it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions about any one tutorial tool or method. This article compares selected research and concludes that the consensus in the literature suggests that applying adult learning principles to library tutorials has a larger impact on effective online instruction than the individual tool.

Not For You, Not For Me, But For Us, A Case Study That Examines The Battersea Arts Centre's Co-Creation Models And How This Generates Symiosis Between Their Community And Organisational Resilience., Katharine Marchingo

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

There is much to learn from the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) who remains at

the forefront of international arts practice despite the temporary loss of capital

infrastructure due to a tragic fire. This resilience is in part due to BAC’s

organisational model and investment strategy; but these aspects are only as strong

as organisational culture and community support allow them to be, these are

much harder to design and more nuanced in application

(Jubb Personal Interview 23 March 2018).

Migration From Mexico To The Us: The Impacts Of Nafta On Mexico And The United States And What To Do Going Forward, Ashley A. Elsasser

International Review of Business and Economics

Research indicates four main causes for migration from Mexico to the United States: Incredibly high crime rates, unemployment, poverty rates, and natural disasters. The first two are especially important in regards to trade between the two border sharing countries. Since agreeing to virtually total free trade, the United States has been able to take advantage of Mexico in such a way that has created further deterioration of the state. If the government of Mexico cannot resurrect the thousands of personal business that were effected do to NAFTA, the U.S. cannot expect for migration from Mexico to deteriorate or halt. By …

Individual And Society: Sociological Social Psychology, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

"Unlike the few other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses that present 3 distinct traditions (or "faces") ... Symbolic Interactionist (SI), Social Structure and Personality (SSP), and Group Processes and Structure (GPS) by topic alone, this text initially discusses these "faces" by research tradition, and emphasizes the different theoretical frameworks within which social psychological analyses are conducted. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between "face" of sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. And students gain an appreciably better understanding of the field of sociological social psychology; how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular …

The Convergence Of Psychology And Neurobiology In Flavor-Nutrient Learning, Kevin P. Myers Mar 2018

The Convergence Of Psychology And Neurobiology In Flavor-Nutrient Learning, Kevin P. Myers

Faculty Journal Articles

Flavor evaluation is influenced by learning from experience with foods. One main influence is flavor-nutrient learning (FNL), a Pavlovian process whereby a flavor acts as a conditioned stimulus (CS) that becomes associated with the postingestive effects of ingested nutrients (the US). As a result that flavor becomes preferred and intake typically increases. This learning powerfully influences food choice and meal patterning. This paper summarizes how research elucidating the physiological and neural substrates of FNL has progressed in parallel with work characterizing how FNL affects perception, motivation, and behavior. The picture that emerges from this work is of a robust system …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to analyze the differences between women and men and their selfies on the popular social media application Instagram. Past research and notions in popular culture show that women take more selfies than men do, and that they place more time and effort into their selfies than men do. The goal is to show that women may not solely do the action of taking and posting selfies and that the stereotype of taking and posting selfies being a feminine action should not be prevalent. We conducted a thorough visual content analysis of selfies on Instagram …

Co-Integration Between Savings And Investment In India And The Us: An Econometric Analysis Of Feldstein-Horioka Hypothesis, Narender Thakur Ph.D., Vishnu Das Gupta Mar 2018

Co-Integration Between Savings And Investment In India And The Us: An Econometric Analysis Of Feldstein-Horioka Hypothesis, Narender Thakur Ph.D., Vishnu Das Gupta

International Review of Business and Economics

This paper econometrically tests the Feldstein-Horioka hypotheses. It uses the domestic savings and domestic investments variables in India and the US in the period 1960- 2014. The Feldstein-Horioka hypotheses states that the cointegration relationship between domestic savings and domestic investments weakens in a country with higher foreign capital mobility and vice-versa. We find that the co-integration relation between the two time-series variables is weakened in the case of the US economy as compared to the Indian economy. These results have policy implications for India as it is opening itself up more to inward foreign investment.

Democratizing Innovation: How Consumer Electronics Is Revolutionizing Rocketscience, Abhith Pallegar

International Review of Business and Economics

The traditional flow of cutting-edge technologies observed over the last 100 years was from government supported defense space to its broader application in the civilian domain. We have seen technology flow into consumer products years after its introduction in defense applications. Most common examples of this movement were the invention and incubation of the Internet and Global Positioning System in prestigious national labs, which later trickled down to benefit millions. But there seems to be a shift in the tide of innovation where consumer market has been influential in developing a range of technologies which have flown the other way …
